🙂 4/5 - A throw back to an earlier time, when family gathered, conversed, savored a meal

I can understand the appeal of this establishment to the younger urban crowd whose lives are busy, hectic and multi-tasked where food is ordered on the phone or eaten on the run and rarely appreciated. 15 Fox Place is a throw back to an earlier time, when family gathered, conversed, savored a meal and enjoyed each others company. Here you are welcomed into someone's home. Nothing is staged, the decorations are family heirlooms, everything is as it was. You recognize the pictures on the wall as the staff's younger self and you are embraced, not as patrons in a restaurant, but as welcomed family. The house was the family home of the owners, now converted into a restaurant, and is a collection of small rooms, vestibules, and alcoves, stuffed with tables and chairs and memories. It is crowded, confined and makeshift just like you remember your Grandma's. It is a treasure that sweeps you into the arms of a family you never knew you had. We were a group of 15 celebrating a milestone birthday, seated on a second floor landing, three tables of four and one of three. Conversation between tables was difficult because of the confinement, yet the staff encouraged us to mingle and to explore the home. And the food; the food is almost secondary. It is served in courses, family style. Portions are small but purposely so to help pace yourself over the total amount of food served. Honestly, this is not the Italian family meal I remember as a child where a huge main course, and salad, followed by dessert was the fare. Here, a euphony of small dishes such as stuffed eggplant, lemon pasta, roasted peppers, Manicotti, polenta with sausage and 'gravy' are served in sequence but slowly timed to allow you to savor the moment. After a seemingly endless stream of small dishes, the main course arrives but it is itself a small dish, rolled chicken stuffed cooked in wine. All this is followed by deserts of chocolate lava cake, zeppole filled with cheese, and Italian cookies. The patriarch and original owner of the home then offers homemade Limoncello to all. The food was good, sometimes great but never exceptional. But taken as a whole, the food, the ambiance, the enjoyment conversing with friends and family, the welcoming of the staff and owners made these three hours a wonderful experience. Many guests Uber to this residential neighborhood, but if you drive, street parking is more readily available then some other areas of Jersey City. The restaurant is BYOB and the staff will chill and serve your wine. Considering it is BYOB, cost for the evening is not cheap, but I would definitely recommend 15 Fox Place for your special occasions.
