Good spot for lunch, and apres, at Ajax base
Great lunch with a great view. After skiing ajax all morning, sitting on the terrace with clear skies and a hearty meal is good way to start your afternoon. The waitstaff are generally pleasant though very busy. When seated we were told 60min limit, they try to turn the tables quickly. The food was very good, french onion soup, steak sandwich, salad, were all very tasty. The cocktails and wine selection are good and the service is fine…a little distracted because of so much going on but not negligent. When done with lunch, it’s a ten step walk to the Gondola.

Great place for lunch on the sundeck on a sunny day and great vibe at dinner. Have the Wagyu pasta and the mixed platter with the pate.

We are locals and went for a late lunch, always sit at the bar and this is (was) my go to for French Onion soup. Well this visit was very disappointing! The soup definitely was lacking in every aspect, no depth of flavors and the burger was okay, normally the fries are spectacular but seamed to be the left over of the batch. Service was good; just don’t know if I’d chance it again for the price! Scratch that off local spot.

We visited twice, once for drinks at the bar (get the lavender martini) and again for lunch outside. Both were great visits. They have an excellent wine list with unique offerings you don't find at a lot of places. The cauliflower gratin is a must do as is the wagyu sandwich and wagyu bolognese. Our server Raymond was great and treated us to birthday sorbets. Overall a great experience!

Ajax Tavern is one of the most well known places in Aspen. And it’s well loved for a reason - great food, drinks and service all in a casual atmosphere make it the perfect spot for dinner while you’re in Aspen.

We arrived at 11:30am and were seated, but waited for 30 minutes and finally had to search down a waiter. We had Luca who was not engaged at all. Messed up our order and did not check in with us. Raymond took over and was an amazing waiter and took over for Luca. Food is just okay. Very overpriced. Service is slow and inattentive.

Lunch was delicious. The servings are definitely generous and if you choose yo share it’s $5! I’ve never seen this before but when In Aspen! Staff was amazing and really enjoyed the vibes and our food.
Be the first to ReplyVeuve Clicquot in the Snow
Stopped here for apres ski, Clicquot in the snow. Enyouyed my glass of yellow label and hubby had an IPA from Aspen brewery. Watched skiers ending their day. Didn’t love the weird club music though, but maybe that’s an Aspen thing?

The place is lovely. Absolutely good food. Great service. The hostess were very friendly. The sommelier offered us a tour or Cabernet Sauvignon to help us choosing the wine we want. Terrific! Thanks for everyone who made our night singular.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Food
Sadly, we had poor - very overpriced food. I have been coming here for 40 years. There are so many better places to have lunch. I don't recommend this restaurant. If you want a drink and sit outside to people watch- great. But I don't recommend the food. It was bland, flavors underwhelming. I suggest the White House - its far superior.

Be the first to ReplyMarvelous location for people-watching
To engage in the art of people-watching, there is no better spot in Aspen than the Ajax Tavern. Located in the luxurious Little Nell hotel at 685 East Durant Avenue, at the base of Aspen Mountain and next to the Silver Queen Gondola, it features a mountainside patio that allows for a casual view of anybody and everybody who visit this tourist mecca. Open from 11:30 to 9 daily, Ajax Tavern offers an all-day menu of delicious appetizers, sandwiches, seafood and desserts under the expert guidance of chef Oscar Ibarra and sous chef Edwin Salgado. Specialties are truffle fries, French onion soup, fresh oysters, shrimp and crab, lamb bolognese and the Ajax Wagyu double cheeseburger. My wife and I started with a half-dozen shrimp from the seafood bar, French onion soup, Kale and Quinoa Caesar salad with reggiano, anchovy, croutons and chicken and a charcuterie with country pate, duck prosciutto, mortadella, salumi, house pickles and preserves. For a main course, my wife chose scallops with hominy risotto, corn sauce pork belly and crispy leeks. I couldn't resist the Ajax Wagyu double cheeseburger with American cheese, onion aioli, frites and truffle fries. For dessert, we shared portions of roasted strawberry creme brulee and double chocolate cake with raspberry and oat milk ganache. Was that Clint Eastwood walking over to the chair lift?

The food and service were great. My husband and I had different salads & we both thought they were delicious. I would have rated it higher but even though we were outside it was difficult to hear our friends. The tables are very close together.

Terrible service. The host on Sunday May 30th was awful. He wasn't able to answer simple questions and didn't understand English. I honestly don't know what he was doing there, because he sure wasn't working. It was so bad, that we decided to go somewhere else. We ended up with an amazing meal and great service just down the street. Also the restaurant on top of the mountain looked great, no need to eat at a lower end place like this one.

The best lunch and atmosphere at the base of Aspen/Ajax…weekends during winter are best with the DJ spinning and Veuve flowing …the French onion soup is noteworthy.
Be the first to ReplyMust-do lunch/après spot in Aspen
On a recent trip to Aspen, my wife and I stopped for lunch at Ajax Tavern, even though a lunch we had there last year left a bit to be desired. Our previous visit had been during the 2021 season when things were still a bit unusual due to Covid restrictions, and the restaurant’s outdoor seating was covered in a tent that ruined the vibe and views. This year, however, Ajax Tavern was back to its original form, with its bustling outdoor patio seating right at the base of the mountain – a perfect place to see and be seen for lunch or drinks.
The restaurant takes guests on a first-come, first-served basis for lunch, and when we went on a Friday afternoon, it was busy, but there was no wait for a table. There was a bit of a line to get in because they were a bit slow in checking vaccine cards (which are required by this restaurant to dine).
I was a little surprised at first that they don’t seem to have any heaters by the outdoor tables, but when it was sunny, it seemed to reflect off of the mountain and create more than enough heat even on a relatively cold day. When the sun went behind the clouds, however, it got a bit cold. It’s helpful to dress in layers to eat outside here.
Once we sat down, our server came over quickly to greet us and take our order. She was friendly and attentive. My wife and I each ordered the double cheeseburger with truffle fries, along with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot to split. The sommelier came out quickly with our bottle of champagne, and we had pleasant conversation as he got it opened and poured for us. Soon after, our burgers and fries arrived, and they are nothing fancy, but excellent. This combination – burgers, truffle fries, and champagne, is a must for us when we dine at Ajax Tavern.
The vibe was nice on the afternoon we were there – just lively and fun, with people enjoying lunch and drinks on a sunny day right at the foot of the mountain, many of whom had just come from skiing, and others like us who were just there to spectate. We didn’t feel rushed in any way, so we stayed for a while enjoying our champagne and taking in the view.
I definitely recommend getting lunch at Ajax Tavern on a trip to Aspen. It’s a well-known, classic spot with the best location you could want. I know there’s also an indoor section where they also serve dinner. However, since nothing served here is overly gourmet, and it’s more about the location and ambiance, I think it would fall flat if you couldn’t be outside on the patio. Come for lunch or après, sit outside, and enjoy.
Great food, service, and LOCATION
Our family visited Ajax Tavern the Tuesday after Christmas for dinner. We had made a reservation on Resy a few weeks earlier, and were seated immediately upon arrival. The service was friendly and prompt, and our food was delicious. Our kids were all able to find something they loved on the menu, and I am still dreaming about the burger and truffle fries. (I even took the leftover fries home and put them in a skillet scramble with eggs and bacon the next morning! So good!) We can't wait to visit again when we are in the area. I would love to go for lunch when you can see the skiers coming down.

After a 5 hour, cold, ski day, I was delighted with the Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup I got at the Ajax Tavern, right at the base of Aspen Mountain. Great wine list as well. Perfect location.

We had dinner during an off season Monday night. We lived the food reconditions and the service. Very nice and cozy place, it gets busy during season.

Ajax Tavern is a very nice place to enjoy a lunch with a view. The outside dining area near the gondola provided a tranquil setting for us. Large pots of flowers were still blooming and placed around the perimeter.
The waitress was pleasant and efficient and the food was good. The view may have been better.
Dinner for 4 after gondola ride
Our waiter, Raymond, was excellent and our service was wonderful. The food was pretty good. Steak sandwich was $35 with and extra $9 for truffle fries. Drink menu was really good. We enjoyed our dinner. We had the only reservation available for 2 hours, but the restaurant was about 25% full. That could have been a staffing ratio. Worth a visit! Convenient at the bottom of the gondola.

The view at the base of the mountain exceeds the food; however, the food was fine. Steak sandwich and burger hit the spot and the fries were very good. Friendly service.
Be the first to ReplyGreat team and Management
I went there for lunch during a very busy day. Regardless of the fact, my waitress was very accommodating and attentive. At times where she couldn't be, Jorge the manager would step in and help. Jorge was very hospitable, caring and easy going. From my observations at lunch, I believe he has great leadership skills and this is reflected in his team. Thank you Jorge and your staff for everything!! You all made my lunch great. Will be returning soon!!!!

My daughter and I arrived for the music festival. We wanted a nice dinner to celebrate our arrival. The staff was great. The food was delicious. However, we had ordered the Friday special Schnitzel with Sauce Robert. Upon receiving our dish, we began to eat. We realized that the kitchen had forgotten the Sauce Robert! When the wait staff arrived to check on us, we had eaten half our meal (not wanting to dine on cold veal). Although the staff apologized, nothing was done to remedy the situation. We, however, did recommend to my daughter's colleague. That were seated and then were ignored for 20 min. So they left. Restaurants should never judge diners by itisir appearance. You never know when a critic is sitting at a table even if on vacation.
