When we were shown the lunch menu, there was NO mention of any change in dishes. Hence we proceeded to order the Singapore Restaurant Week prix fixe menu. Towards the end of the meal, we realized that we have not been served the Chawan & enquired with staff. Staff simply replied "changed to cold tofu (you had earlier)." Similarly, nothing was mentioned when dessert was served, except that it's "torched sponge cake with whipped cream & some normal chocolate (cream) underneath". The sponge cake was dry & looked like an attempt to plate some "leftovers" from the fridge/pantry. This is definitely different from what's stated on the menu, ie, "Binchotan Charcoal Grilled Butter Cake with Smoked Cream". Quite shocked by Akanoya's lack of integrity. It doesn't swallow well when we ordered A but was delivered B. No notification of the replacement, no attempts to apologize or seek our understanding upon serving etc. ***** The staff who served our claypot rice mentioned that we can ask for unlimited refills of the claypot rice. When we asked for our first refill, a staff simply took 1 of our bowl away, came back with a bowl of plain white rice, & walked away without saying anything. Feeling puzzled, we asked another staff about the claypot rice. The second staff explained that it was getting late for the chef, so they have stopped preparing claypot rice. He also said that if we had come earlier, we could have as much as we wanted. Excuse me, it was your staff who informed us that we could ask for refill, just a while ago. Even a casual family restaurant staff would have alerted us that their kitchen was closing soon & if we had any last orders. But nobody alerted us in this case & definitely no apologies made when we were served the bowl of plain white rice. We are also not gluttons & did not plan to ask for multiple refills! ***** As if the experience was not bad enough already, here's the conversation (in brief) when we were getting our bill: staff: "It's your first time here right? I'm sorry for the bad experience. I'll feedback to the team & see what we can do about it. If you come back for dinner, it will be better." me: "i don't think we'll be coming back anytime soon" staff: "I understand. This is considered a fine dining so it's not like you can come everyday ..." us: "it's not about the money! Today's experience is so bad, why would we even want to return?!" Quote from their homepage, "Since its inaugural opening in 2008, Akanoya Robatayaki has served many well-known celebrities and ministers who are now regulars to the restaurant." Is there some sort of customer discrimination at Akanoya? Lunch experience won't be as nice as Dinner because Lunch is of a lower revenue? Only celebrities or ministers can afford to dine here often? Because we are not them, you can simply change our dishes & not provide an equal service standard? We left the restaurant feeling terrible & insulted. Probably the worst lunch ever
