Tasting mneu had excellent dishes, some oversalted, which was unnecessary for sashimi. Service was attentive, but we expected more discussion with the staff about the food.
Be the first to ReplyMy review is somewhere between a 3 and a 4.
.. My husband and I came here for a special splurge valentine's day dinner. The service and the knowledge of the chefs and the servers is impeccable. They were very friendly and attentive, and a lot of their fish is aged with a special aging process that sets them apart from other sushi restaurants. The food was good, but unfortunately not super memorable. One of their most instagrammable dishes is the milktoast with fatty tuna and caviar, topped with gold flakes. It's a beautiful dish but I wasn't wowed by the taste. It is more for show than for flavor, especially with the over-the-top element of caviar and gold flakes. The cocktail and drink menu was pretty extensive -- and very expensive! Cocktails for $22-25 is crazy, even for SF! The vibe was kind of weird and sterile, I guess that's what you get for a super fancy restaurant in what's basically the FiDi. The clientele all seemed a little too comfortable with their privilege, a mix of bougie techie IDGAF kinda vibe. If the place wasn't so astronomically expensive, maybe I would be a little more forgiving on my rating, but I just can't justify the price tag for the experience. That said, the food was good and the chefs know what they're doing.
Be the first to Replyan amazing decadent meal in the city.
.. you'll leave feeling STUFFED after all the dishes and nigiri. they also had kohada which you rarely see in the states. great for a special night out

AKIKOS may have moved locations, but the food and service haven't changed a bit. The restaurant over delivers on both fronts. If you're looking for an incredible omakase experience, look no further than AKIKOS. Our menu consisted of: 1) Osechi - tako, herring roe, blackbeans 2) Sashimi - akami, shirako, makogarel 3) Robusută - lobster, leek, caviar 4) Chawanmushi - egg custard, duck liver, king crab & lobster gravy 5) Cioppino - cod, tomato & clam sauce 6) Shokupan - milk bread, toro, golden kaluga caviar 7) Sunomono - mirugai, pear, raspberries, muscat, cucumber 8) Zuke - soy cured bluefin tuna 9) Kawahagi - trigger fish 10) Ji-Kinmedai - goldeneye red snapper 11) Aori Ika - bigfin reef squid 12) Uni - sea urchin 13) Buri - matured yellowtail 14) Kohada - gizzard shad 15) Kamasu - young barracuda 16) Toro - bluefin belly 17) Anago - wild sea eel 18) Dessert - White sesame We also ordered an additional serving of Hotate (scallop) nigiri.

I came here on a Thursday afternoon to celebrate my friend's birthday and try their omakase menu. My first impression is that the restaurant's interior is beautiful. I loved the atmosphere and the staff was extremely welcoming. We had reservations so we got seated immediately at the bar. We then got offered either still or sparkling water and a hot towel for the hands. The menu consisted of 13 items for $150. The standouts to me were Robusuta, Chawanmushi and Kurodai. The nigiri's were all pretty good, but the pieces were on the smaller size compared to other omakase spots I've been to. Note that you can order more pieces after the set menu is finished for additional cost. At the end, we were served with a white sesame ice cream for dessert which I didn't find to be too special. Overall, I did enjoy this place (food, service, ambiance) but I do think the price is a bit steep for what you are getting.
Be the first to ReplyOmakase for lunch was perfection.
Pricey but worth every penny. The omakase experience seems divisive; it's a thoughtfully plated, curated meal during which you relinquish control... and it was phenomenal.
Be the first to ReplyAfter clarifying which Akiko's we booked, we headed over to
After clarifying which Akiko's we booked, we headed over to Folsom and entered a very spacious dining space with very tall ceilings and a pristine looking dining room. We came for a weekday birthday lunch, and we were seated at the chefs' counter, where we enjoyed the view of our chef plating each course of the $150 omakase. Apparently, it is omakase only. In front of us lay a warm, damp cloth and Aesop hand sanitizer. We started with Taiheikai sake, which surprisingly came in a wine glass. Makogarei - flounder, seasonal vegetables Great! served with skinned, sweet tomatoes and topped with greens Robusuta - lobster, leek, caviar Great! Lobster was cooked perfectly and sweet. Chawanmushi - egg custard, snow crab, lobster Good! Silky custard with shredded crab and lobster bits in savory broth. Shokupan - milk toast, toro, golden kaluga caviar Excellent! Perfect presentation of toasted shokupan with what looked like very precisely shaped toro, with a generous serving of caviar, topped with salt flakes and gold flakes, although I usually find gold leaf to be quite useless, but it does look nice here. Sunomono - surf clams, scallops, cucumber Good! I was most interested in the plate which looks just like a crumpled paper napkin. The sweet, tender scallops stood out the most on this plate. Before our nigiri courses, we received a small, wet, black, finger towel, which looked like it was in the shape of an Omega. Zuke - soy cured bluefin tuna Great! thick and meaty texture Kuromutsu - blue fish Great! smooth texture with a fatty taste Sawara - Spanish mackerel Great! sweet and meaty, torched to golden brown Shin Ika - young cuttlefish Good! smooth feel Sujiko - salmon roe Good! briny, bright orange, the only nigiri served in a golden spoon Kurodai - sea bream Great! sweet and meaty Toro - bluefin belly Good! Not the best toro and could be fattier, but still delicious. From the raw menu, we ordered 2 types of uni, which was fun to try side by side. $13 Nama Uni - short spine sea urchin, $13 Ooita Uni - organic long spine sea urchin Excellent! Both were delicious and served in golden spoons. The ooita was slightly creamier and sweeter. Matcha Ice Cream - sesame crumble Good! Matcha and black sesame are always nice together. Once again, topped with gold flakes. Great nigiri with quality fish and rice. I was pleased to have been served by a female sushi chef, who provided excellent service. It is not often that you see a woman behind the counter.
Be the first to ReplyThis has been on my sushi list for some time.
There are a lot of really nice sushi spots in SF, so was hoping this place would be in that top tier. The price point, around 180 is definitely in that top tier. First off...they got our preferences wrong. We did omakase and told our waiter that my friend can't do shrimp, but any other shellfish was fine. We ended up not getting ANY shellfish (either of us). The fish as well, just wasn't at that level that we're accustomed to for the best spots in the city (juni, wako, etc). The quality reminded me of hinata, but hinata has a MUCH friendlier price point. Also, I'm not sure if omakase saved us any money here fwiw. You should just order a la carte and just pick the pieces you want. Won't be back, and won't recommend this to anyone
Be the first to ReplyQuite an experience from the usual.
Received lovely experience here with knowledgeable and attentive staff. From when I walked through the doors and when I left I was treated like a true guest! I highly recommend a seat at the sushi bar so we can see all the action and also talk with the chefs. They know the fish very well and can tell you the differences. All the dishes I had were unique from each other and the flavors really came out.

Since they moved locations and opened up near us, we decided to check it out for dinner. They did very well with the presentation of many of their dishes. The dishes that stood out to me were the chawanmushi and shokupan. The goldeneye red snapper nigiri was also delicious amongst the nigiris. The server was good with recommending sake that suit our palate and pair well with the fish. Overall, a pretty decent omakase. I'd recommend trying it out if you live close by.

Been wanting to try this place every since they opened! The neighborhood is known to be quite the food dessert and everyone was super excited when this super splashy sushi place popped up. It has a modern and very high end vibe, and it all just looks so aesthetic!Service was great and we definitely get enough food. It's omakase only but they start with a few small plates and then end with nigiri. They definitely took a lot of care and putting together some decorative pieces so it was very michelin and more western style fine dining vibe. It's not just your traditional omakase. Points for creativity for sure. All the sashimi was really good but the wagyu dumpling was absolutely delicious - so savory and delicious. The tuna with caviar on top of this toast was also so bomb and never had anything like it before - very unique. For the nigiri, the two tuna pieces were the best! The other pieces were good and some were a bit of a miss. I thought the crab would be one of my favorites but didn't like the taste of it too much. I think overall nice experience but it was a bit too pricey. I think if they cut back a little and trimmed down on some of the extra gimmicks for the food to help the price, then it be more reasonable.

Like other reviews said, it's more of a $$$$$ than $$$$ place. We spent a little over 1k for just the two of us on dinner omakase and sake pairings, but with that said WOW. We've had a lot of omakase in many cities, and this is probably our favorite. We were blown away by the quality of ingredients, unique combination of flavors, and quality of service. Many of the otsumami were a delight- unexpected flavors, a variety of textures, a more modern approach to sushi in general. The milk toast was to die for and we absolutely loved the wagyu dumpling. We didn't particularly care for the yellowtail with tomatoes, but our waiter was so sweet and they happily swapped it out for something we loved. And omg the nigiri. The highest quality fish we've had in a long time, and meticulously cut and seared. The quantity of food was also great, we were absolutely stuffed before the final nigiri even came out, which is rare for tasting menus (for us at least). We also really appreciated the excellent service. SF fine dining has a habit of being too slow, too fast, or too in-your-face, but the service here was perfect. Water glasses/sake always full, dishes always perfectly timed and at the right temp, and servers were informative and attentive. We'll for sure be back!
Be the first to Replyfor $250/person, it's 3stars.
the whole thing is worth about $150. only 4-5 pcs of nigiri. Just another place that doubled the price on the "COVID" excuse.

Revisited for lunch this time and I'm happy to say lightning did strike twice for me here. The courses before the nigiri are okay - some pretty good, some just too light in flavor, but the nigiri was phenomenal yet again. There were many pieces that tasted absolutely perfect, I think even more than the last time I was there. The beverage pairing wasn't as perfect as the last time but it was good enough that I'll still trust their judgement next time. Knocking one star off only because they overcharged me for one supplement I ordered 3 of and they counted as 4, and also and if you're seated at the corner it can be a little difficult getting the chef's attention, but in spite of these couple of hiccups I still love this place and will definitely be back. As others have mentioned here, and I even said it in my last review, they probably could get a Michelin star. I think they'd just need to focus on stronger flavors in the first courses (or even just reduce the number of starter courses, as they already have two great ones and it would leave more room for the excellent nigiri) and fix those occasional hiccups in service.

I've been a few times to their old location on Bush and this was the first time at their new location. It was always beyond excellent and this was beyond that. It's omakase only and it's not cheap ($250pp). This was a very special date - I was taking a special lady from Denver out for dinner. And the first date in SF with her or anyone in 27 years (I'm a widower). The experience delivered across the board. Very serene. Lots of polished wood making a 4 sided counter area with the sushi making mostly happening inside the quad. We were not rushed at all. I'd describe the food but I would fail. It's a mix of starters chefs creations followed by more familiar nigiri. Although I'd hesitate to say familiar. The fish is very unique. Aged to perfection and pristine. I will go again but this is not an everyday experience. A Glass of champagne, a cocktail, some sake and the food + tip was $800+. Worth every penny. And for the bonus, my date absolutely loved the experience and is now my lady friend.

Was so excited to try their Omakase and it did not disappoint! Made a reservation for 3 for a table ( I believe for parties of 3+, you will be seated at a table), but the experience was still really really nice. The interior and decor is so luxe, service was good, and food was high quality and super fresh! At other Omakase restaurants, oftentimes I find myself thinking one dish I could have done without or didn't really want to finish, but every single item on the menu here was amazing and I would rate at least an 8.5/10. There wasn't one thing I ate that I felt wasn't to my liking or I could have skipped next time. Some standouts:Otsumami:- Noresore was a great start to our meal - super fresh and I really enjoyed the texture!- Sashimi was really good and each fish was dressed to perfection- Shokupan!! The presentation is just so beautiful and I was most excited for this coming into the dinner, and I wasn't disappointed at all.The Zuke (soy cured bluefin tuna) and Ishigakidai (knife jaw) nigiris were my absolute fav!! So so good! I will say for the Uni, the one that's part of the Nigiri list isn't from Japan (ours was from Canada) so it's not as sweet as you would expect - you'll have to additionally order if you want Hokkaido Uni :(And last but not least, THE DESSERT OH MY GOSH SO SO GOOD. We had their black sesame ice cream and it exceeded any expectations we had of their dessert... me and my girlfriends were in love!! One of the best things on the menu FOR SURE!! Overall, do I think it's worth $250/person? Hmm, hard to say since it is a steep price... but do I think it's worth at least a visit and try? For sure yes! I'll still be coming back with my sister so she can try as well and in the future, for special occasions :)
Be the first to Replywow wow! Chef Ray has outdone himself once again.
I have been a regular at the old flagship location since 2007. And I absolutely adored it. But this new location is a step up by a mile. The whole experience was unforgettable... the ambiance, the quality of fish and the wine & sake list were simply to die for. I cannot wait to come back ... and fingers crossed #Michelin is coming your way. The whole team is so deserving of recognition

Service and food were top notch. Unlike other omakase experiences they don't jump straight into the nigiri and instead deliver several impressive starters. The shokupan and and egg custard were standouts. The dry aging imparted some unique flavors and elevated the traditional nigiri. Akikos is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and we will be looking forward to the a la carte offering.

I came up to The City for a couple of business meetings and was pleasantly surprised to realize AKIKOS moved right around the corner from the SF office. I made a reservation for 2, but my +1 had to cancel so I arrived early hoping to be seated at the bar early. My takeaways:1) The service from arriving to exiting was top-notch. The team was flexible, personable, engaging, and attentive.2) The food was a joy to experience and taste, and also to watch being prepared. I had a lot of fun, I also enjoyed the people watching. 3) I want to return with a larger party to experience their semi-private 8-person round table for dinner. I can imagine having a lot of fun there with a small group.

After seeing the experience my husband had here on a business trip, I had to come. A wee wait before we could travel again...and the omakase experience ravels the top sushi restaurants in New York. Each dish exceeded my high expectations and they did not disappoint. We can't wait to come back and we are excited to see their new location. Exceptional experience and at the counter, the serving chef was super helpful. The staff were all friendly.
Be the first to ReplyVery underwhelming.
Showing up was a bit of a shock, it was TINY. We gave it the benefit of the doubt thinking it was in China Town, it could be the best authentic sushi I have had. Some places like this are better than some five-star places. The facility only held MAYBE 15 people. Yet the service was terrible. We sat there watching them take numerous to-go orders and it was apparent that was their priority. We had to go up to the bar several times to get served. Remind at this time there were maybe 8 people there. The sushi wasn't the best I have had nor the worst.
Be the first to ReplyTop tier service.
Absolutely nothing to complain about. Great food and amazing staff. Do not come if you do not plan on tipping! A1
