and sweet server. I was alone but they seated me right away Very crowded area
Be the first to ReplyThey did us wrong! My fiancรฉ and I came here on a date.
There are so many other good place in japantown, but we wanted to give this a try. We waited over 40 mins to get our drinks. The only reason we got our waters is because I asked for them with another server. It took another long wait for someone to tell us they had messed up our order and they were making it. At this point we were about and hour in with nothing but the waters I had asked for. We decided to still give it a try and take the food to go and have a better time at home. Big mistake!! It took another 30 mins to get our food and not even the full order, the last roll took another 30 mjns. I should've left, but at this point I had already paid. The restaurant was not even that busy. Sucks because we are neighbors and could bring family, friend and have dates more often here. The food was eh also. Definitely not coming back.

Akira is a hidden gem that I was hoping to gatekeep as long as possible. As a self-proclaimed food snob, Akira is hands down my favorite restaurant in all of SF. They use only the freshest ingredients which would normally cost you an arm and a leg at other places. Chef Minh is the sweetest, and really makes his customers feel at home and taken care of. The wait staff are all fast, responsive, and amazing. This restaurant has exceptional service. I've tried a bit of everything on the menu, and while everything is solid, these are some of my favorites:- Shokado bento: very traditional and authentic set menu item (fish of the day is always grilled to perfection and I get to eat a bit of everything, always satisfies my cravings)- Chirashi bowl: imo the best value Chirashi bowl you will find in SF. Fish is unique and fresh- our chef had us try interesting cuts such as the fin muscle of halibut and it was to die for.- Omakase: just do it and trust me on this one. So worth.

Updating my review as we've become regulars at Akira for dine in. We enjoy being able to avoid the Japantown mall crowd and get high quality Japanese food. My new favorite is the shokado bento box. It's the best bento box I've found in the Japantown area (at this price point). I love the variety included in the bento box, and consistent quality. It includes fresh sashimi, cooked fish, a cold tofu stew, tempura, and some pickled vegetables. My wife also really enjoys the udon here. The udon noodles are nice and bouncy, the broth is subtle sweet and savory flavor that's unique without being too salty.

Great sushi! Best kept secret in San Fransisco. Will definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyNice food, quiet place and good service.
The portion of the food is big enough for one adult.

Came here on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm and we were seated immediately! The server was really kind and considerate/generally the service was great. We ordered the agedashi tofu, the negi toro roll, and two special rolls. The agedashi tofu was delicious and came with a few tempura veggies as well. The negi toro roll was likewise good! The two special rolls were alright, the fish was definitely fresh but they weren't anything crazy special. They offered us fresh wasabi which was super delicious, and the ginger was good as well. Overall, a great place to get some quick bites of sushi in a nice environment! Would stop by here again if I'm in the area.
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a Saturday evening and were seated immediately.
The service was great and gave wonderful recommendations for our first time coming here. We got the kakuni pork belly, pumpkin tempura roll, seared salmon belly roll, and the creme brรปlรฉe. - The pork belly and sauce were sooo delicious, only wish the serving size was a bit bigger. - Both rolls were so good and really loved the unique pumpkin tempura roll rather than the more common shrimp tempura rolls. The fish was fresh and hit the spot for our sushi cravings. - The ginger creme brรปlรฉe had very subtle ginger flavoring, so would've liked it to be more prominent given the name. It was a solid creme brรปlรฉe though. Overall, Amira has great food and service! The downside is that the portion sizes are small and for that size is on the pricier side.
Be the first to ReplyI've come here a few times and it's always good.
This time I had the sushi combo and agedashi tofu. The agedashi tofu was really nice. Right out of the fryer, so hot and crunchy but still had the gelatinous texture. The broth had good flavor and they topped it with grated daikon and ginger, which is always good (restaurants without that topping may be mark of non-authenticity). Also, they added a few pieces of tempura, which I thought was a nice touch, both unique and thoughtful. The fish had good flavor and the proportion of fish to rice was perfect (for me). Maybe my only critique was the rice. It was slightly hard but not at all bad and I prefer my sushi rice more seasoned (but I realize that's my preference and maybe not shared by true sushi chefs). The other very minor suggestion (and we're getting pretty picky) is the agedashi tofu broth could have had more smoky bonito flavor. Overall, great place. Their care shines through their dishes.
Be the first to ReplyWe really wanted to eat sushi and decided on this
We really wanted to eat sushi and decided on this restaurant after seeing the ratings on Yelp. The food was pretty delicious and good value for the price they offered in their menu. The location of this restaurant is pretty random, kind of a hole in the wall, but definitely a must visit! The service was okay, they did take some time to come collect our order or get the bill, but overall very kind people. We got some crab rolls and chicken karage, both were super flavorful!

Be the first to ReplyMy favorite sushi place in San Francisco!! It's a cute
My favorite sushi place in San Francisco!! It's a cute small-sized restaurant with well-made fresh items and quality service. I never fail to have a good time here. Here are the rankings of what I ordered:1. Oysters (small, fresh, worth it)2. Seared Salmon Belly Roll (pretty neck and neck with the oysters; salmon rolls are my favorite wherever I go)3. Udon (always have to have udon with my sushi to make sure I'm full and filled with warm soup)4. California Hand-roll (fresh crab but imo could use a little more mayo)5. Pink Dragon (wasn't a fan because it was bland and flavorless)I wasn't a fan of sitting outside on a slope for Valentine's Day but that wasn't their fault, it was just busy and I was hungry so took the open seating. It usually a 5 star experience but I didn't love their Pink Dragon or seating arrangements outside of low quality tables. Still my favorite though!!
Be the first to ReplyFound this gem when we were looking for sushi restaurants
Found this gem when we were looking for sushi restaurants open late at night and we weren't disappointed in the least. We've been back five times now and love everything about it. The servers and sushi chefs are always so nice and friendly and the food is always excellent. The prices are a little bit more, but the experience is definitely worth it. Will definitely be coming back in the future.

Be the first to ReplyComing back is even better the 2nd time.
Decided to try their sushi and chicken karaage and both are amazing. I talked to the owner and he told me that they make their own soy sauce...I knew it tasted very unique compared to your store brought soy sauce. He explained to me how they make it and there is a lot of love and ingredients that they use. The chicken karaage is perfectly fried and the flavor is very nice with the lemon squeezed on top.I can't wait to comeback again to eat more of their delicious food.

Found this place by accident about a year ago and now it's quickly become a must go to whenever we are in SF for work. The place is small cute and unassuming with deliciously fresh sashimi. ย Every dish we have had there does not disappoint. We actually are so excited for the food that no pictures have even had a chance to be taken!
Be the first to ReplyWow wow wow the waitress was really really rude.
On our first arrival we felt cold but haven't said anything, the waitress came over and kept saying she will turn on the heater, " just give me a few minutes " she said. Guess what? We didn't have our heater turned on till the end of our meal. She also missed our order as well. She even took away our plates and utensils without saying anything thinking that we ordered too little and judged us pretty harshly with her unwelcoming facial expressions. Wow.Phenomenally horrible.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is really good, the miso soup and seaweed salad
This place is really good, the miso soup and seaweed salad is out of this world and their rolls are awesome! The special rolls can be hit and miss but the ones that hit really hit. The hamachi Kama was to die for, highly recommend getting it if you come here. Both indoor and outdoor seating are very nice and the bathrooms were super clean and pleasant. Only draw back on this place is service is a little slow, seems like they only have one or two waiters working at a time it's possible the chefs are a little slow too but good food takes time.
Be the first to ReplyWent here about 2 weeks ago and haven't stopped thinking
Went here about 2 weeks ago and haven't stopped thinking about it. The sushi was solid but the experience was also phenomenal. So as you can tell, I'm already going to recommend that you try it out! And pricing wise, it's super fair for the amount of food you get/the norm around the area. FOOD: there's a really solid list of vegetarian options which I loved. Didn't feel like I could *only* get the avocado roll (although it is a fav). The veg tempura was really good, but I feel like it needed more sauce of some sort. Like a spicy Mayo drizzle just to bring more flavor. My friend that has the pink dragon felt the same way. They are good about bringing out sriracha/spicy Mayo on the side so it all turned out okay! Would be nice to already have it on the rolls though. SERVICE: AMAZING service. We had a fairly large group which I know can be a lot to handle when you're trying to take orders but everyone is talking. Our waitress did a phenomenal job and was so kind to us. Brought us some edamame on the house as well an extra sake for the sake bombs we had ordered. It's small things like that makes me love this place even if that's a one time only. Shows that they really do care about their customers. AMBIANCE: super chill ambiance! I didn't get to see the inside as our group was 10+ people so it was required we sat outside. They did have a nice wood structure on the street with tables inside so everyone could sit and your everyone was near a heater. Great for any type of event/circumstance.
