Good Food, but Not Michelin Quality
We recently went to Alta to have dinner with another couple. We tried several items on the menu. Most were very good. The cocktails left a lot to be desired. The martini flight was horrible. Whoever dreamed up the martini formulations should reevaluate the recipes. They were so bad that we sent them back. They also did not have a decent botanical gin to make a simple gin and tonic. The very limited draught beer selections were good. On to the food: --Deviled eggs: very good, but you only get 2 eggs for $12. --Cornbread: very good --Blackeyed pea fritters: good --Fried chicken: we ordered the 6-piece platter for the table figuring that we would get an assortment of parts, but they only serve wings, drumsticks, and the smallest chicken thighs I've ever seen. No breasts. When I pointed this out to the waiter, he said that's just the way they do it. At $29, this was not value received. --Shrimp & grits: Good, but the grits were the texture of cream of wheat. The shrimp were sweet and perfectly cooked. --Coleslaw: Very good, tangy. The waitstaff is fantastic. We were fortunate to have Jeremy as our waiter. The main room of the restaurant is extremely loud. The noise level in the second indoor dining room was manageable. They also offer outdoor seating. Valet parking is $10, but they simply park your car on the street, which you could do yourself.

Love, love, L-O-V-E Alta! If you the get chance to go and experience it for yourself, GO! We sat outside on the back patio for lunch, which is beautiful. It was the perfect temperature. Nazareth, the host, was so warm and welcoming. He was delightful! Rashad was behind the bar when we were there for lunch on Saturday. His jalapeno watermelon seasonal lemonade was on pointe! So tasty! Imani, our server, took wonderful care of us. And, of course, Chef Keith is a community treasure! What a gem! We were a party of 8 and we had the Cornbread with Honey Butter; Deviled Eggs; Spicy Purple Sweet Potato Soup, Toasted, Coconut, Fried Banana; Jerk-Spiced Grilled Plaintain Tacos, Mango-Habanero Sauce as starters. For entrees we had House Smoked Brisket with Apple BBQ Sauce; Fried Fish Sandwich with Spicy Tartar Sauce, Slaw, Pickles; Vegan California Gombo with Market Veggies with Smoked Tofu; and Smoked and Fried Tofu with Spicy Tartar Sauce. For sides we ordered Red Beans and Rice; Collard Greens with Smoked Oil and Vinegar; and Mac and Cheese. Everything was amazingly good! I think the soup stole the show though. If that looks interesting to you, I highly recommend!! Don't skip on the collard greens. They are vegan! Also, be sure to check out the wine shop next door. They feature women and minority winemakers. Can't wait to go back!!!

I really wanted to love this place and put a big star next to it on my list of places to eat on my current trip to LA. The entire meal ended up being a disaster. There were only a few tables occupied so I thought I would be able to get my food quickly. I thought wrong. I started with the black eyed pea fritters, which did come quickly but were just like they sounded. Mashed up peas that were breaded and fried. Very forgettable and at $11 for six small fritters they were extremely expensive. Things went further south from there. The staff was pushing a tandoori chicken special of the day. I guess they had a pop up recently and some chicken was left over. I decided to order it. 40 minutes later my chicken arrived. I have no idea why a half chicken should take that long, but it was a ridiculous amount of time to wait for lunch. I was hoping that at least it would be worth the wait, but was wrong again as it arrived very very dry and their definition of tandoori is bordering on a cultural misunderstanding. The entire time I waited for it I got a lot of โit should be out in a minuteโ comments from the staff. They actually offered to bring me a box before my food had even arrived. I didnโt come for take out. I came to enjoy a meal there. I am in the restaurant business and can tell you that if anyone had to wait 40 minutes for food at any of my restaurants I would immediately go into the mode of making things right. We were way past โsorry about the waitโ territory. I would have started comping items and offering to make something that would arrive faster. When someone comes into a restaurant and drops $70 on lunch they need to leave thinking it was one of the best lunches theyโve ever had. Unfortunately for me it was one of the worst. I was hoping to go back for dinner if I liked it but I wonโt be returning here again.

I visited here during my first trip to LA. I was excited because this was a restaurant featured in Issa Rae's Insecure. However, coming from the South East, their "elevated" a la carte soul food menu was an expensive & overrated experience. Greens had a bit too much vinegar but were seasoned well. The fish was spicy & fried too hard. The Mac had bread crumbs on top...if you know, you know.. The cornbread was the best part of the meal. I didn't care for the fact that I was seated at a counter right in front of the grill, and left with my clothes & hair smelling like smoke from whatever they burned while I was seated. ๐๐พ

Went to this place for the very first time, nice decor and ambiance. I ordered the shrimp and grits $24, I eat sparely, but this portion was ridiculously small (appetizer size) I also ordered a glass of wine $18, it was half a glass at best . I'm still hungry considering going to jack in the box.

From walking in the door with the ambiance, to being seated, and to the young beautiful sommeliรจre who had an extensive background on each of the wines. She asked us what we were thinking of eating so she could give us the perfect pairing with our appetizer and main courses. This comfort food was beyond delectable, including the desserts. The best part was it was amazing high end kind-of-place but had budget prices for such greatness! Thank you Jaela, Rashad, and especially to our lovely, beautiful, attentive, and patient waitress, Vanessa. Thank you all for such a great dining experience for my first time. I will be back soon.

The decor and atmosphere are nice. The cocktails are delicious, if pricey. But the food provided neither quality nor quantity. I canโt recommend this place, unless youโre specifically looking for a gentrified hipster parody of soul food

Great stop for a drink. Beautiful decor, awesome staff. Outdoor patio is super cute too. Bottle shop attached. Support this Black-owned business!!!
Be the first to ReplyGood Restaurant in West Adams
My family and I had lunch here recently during a visit to Los Angeles. The restaurant has a long bar and a number of booth seating indoors, and a spacious outdoor patio in the rear. The shrimp and grits that my wife and I had were excellent, and the waitstaff suitably attentive.
Be the first to ReplyHorrific! Donโt Believe the Hype
Looking for soul food? Avoid this place at all costs. We were wooed by the good press this place had received so while we were in town visiting from Dallas, TX our group of five gave it a try. We were completely disappointed. First, the bar problem. As we waited at the bar for our early evening table, they had already run out of the beers on tap and only had one offering. The mixed drink selection is meager and drinks such as martinis and cosmos that should be served in appropriate glasses are served in tiny doll sized glasses priced at $16. Tequila shots are overpriced as is the beer.
On to dinner. As we were seated, the hostess immediately told us we had a 90 minute timeline to finish our meal and get out; not exactly a warm, inviting slice of hospitality. Next, our waiter, who really was cordial, informed us we had to order appetizers and entrees at the same time since the kitchen was short staffed and this kept them from having to put in multiple tickets. We did as instructed and ordered the cornbread he recommended for an appetizer and our entrees. Out came the cornbread which became a crumbly mess as it was cut and was nothing more than doctored up Jiffy out of the box. A few minutes later, all of our entrees were delivered and all of them were lukewarm which told me the food was probably being kept under heat lamps or given a quick microwaving before serving.
Now for the specifics. Candied yams, NOT! They were two thick slices of tasteless sweet potatoes in a soupy looking brown, watery sauce sprinkled with chewy pecan clumps. Fried chicken, was lukewarm with a hot flavoring on it intended to be the spice; another fail. Collard greens were doused in vinegar and inedible. Red beans and rice had undercooked beans that were still hard. Oxtails came with cold rice. Two paltry black eyed pea fritters were cold and tasteless. The mac and cheese was the only tolerable side dish. Dessert didn't fare any better. We ordered a piece of Seven Up cake to share just in case it was as bad as the dinner. And, they failed that test too. The cake was underbaked and gooey throughout.
I don't care what star has eaten here, the reputation is overblown as are the prices and any good reviews they've gotten. To top it off, they added a 3% "covid protocol surcharge" to our bill. What the heck was that about??? I didn't see any effort to take additional steps to clean and sanitize tables and service equipment or safely serve our meals. Only one staffer was wearing a mask, no one sanitized tables and chairs between seatings, inside ventilation wasn't particularly good, no sanitizing wipes or bottles available, etc., so it was difficult to understand why patrons had to pay for something that was non-existent at this restaurant. The cost of doing business during a pandemic is what a restaurant has to subsume, unfortunately, but we didn't see evidence that they were making efforts to "keep their servers and patrons safe" as the receipt stated as an explanation for the additional charge.
Anyone who really knows what soul food is should steer clear of this place. Over priced, over rated, over hyped. Never again!
Great food
Food is fantastic, portions are huge so consider sharing with your dining partner/s.
The deviled eggs, corn bread, fried chicken were amazing.
Cocktails are good but take a bit too long so be prepared to wait.
good food, great space, and awesome cocktails
Food is really good, but not healthy, I would eat here all the time but for my waste line, highlights are the corn bread, black pea fritters, and chicken.
Be the first to ReplyPricy, with highs and lows
Heralded since opening for Southern hospitality and upscale Comfort Food that makes guests feel at home in LAโs urban jungle, it was with the partial-lifting of pandemic precautions that six friends sat down at Alta West Adams, a strict 90-minute limit making things feel slightly less โwarmโ considering the fact that the Hollywood Restaurant was less than a quarter filled from noon until 1:30 on Saturday.
A joint project from Chefs Keith Corbin and Daniel Patterson, Locolโs failure seeing the Bay Area Chef tap a talented native of Watts to make โhonest California Soul Food,โ it is through indoor seating and a bar that diners access Altaโs shaded backyard patio complete with foliage, heaters and QR-code menus.
On-concept in everything from Drinks to Cuisine, with prices one might expect in West Hollywood, it is from Starters that guests are invited to begin their meal, Altaโs Cornbread big enough to share but crumbly around the edges while Pimento Dip and deep-fried Black Eyed Peas pack plenty of heat and fare far better.
Also adding Brunch-special Pancakes, the Cornmeal Batter here well-utilized for oversized discs that are buoyant and buttery, sides tally $7-9 with excellent Mac & Cheese at least 8x the size of a laughable quarter Sweet Potato beneath two ground Pecans.
Also adding Collards, a porky sapor invigorating tender Greens and complex aromatics, fans of BBQ will find Corbinโs Brisket lacking Bark but upgraded by sweet BBQ Sauce while $31 Oxtails with Rice and $24 Shrimp and Grits each justify their cost with bold flavors and textbook execution.
Defiantly charging $4.50 a piece for Fried Chicken lacking Breasts, apparently skillet-made but more akin to what one might get from an air-fryer, Dessert poses a different set of challenges, outsourced 7-Up Cake moist and enjoyable in comparison to what is essentially a Pineapple Upside Down Muffin and neither nearly so good as the light and layered Banana Pudding.
YUM!
Ate here on a recent visit to LA. My daughter & daughter in law took me for a birthday dinner. It was absolutely a wonderful culinary experience. We ordered quite a few different items. Everything was delicious. Our drinks were great. Our server was wonderful & answered all questions. A delightful experience.

Nothing really stood out. The flavors were bland and underwhelming. Maybe it gets better at dinner time, but I was not impressed by the brunch meal we had.
Be the first to ReplyA Surprise Delight at ALTA WestAdams
So mid-city Los Angeles continues to grow more interesting with each new business that is an asset to the community. Atla West Adams is a bright light in a corridor that hasnโt quite transitioned just yet. Though the warm & fuzzy feeling when you step inside is on par with any restaurant in a swanky neighborhood. FOOD IS EXCELLENT! A ton on GF options that just made me happy. I am always cautious not to post about food being GLUTEN FREE until at least 24 Hours later when Iโve confirmed that I did not get sick nor have any type of reaction.
So far my favorite dishes included Shrimp & Grits, Black Eyed Peas Fritters, Angel Eggs & Collards w/ Smoked Oil.
DE-LISH!!! I mean truly a dance to my tastebuds.
This place is friendly, menu is healthy-delicate-SOUL & the mission behind the employee base makes me want to make ALTA the place I visit frequently. GF Friendly / Vegan Friendly / People - Friendly.
I was so excited and my eyes so delighted the truth is I forgot to take pictures of each dish. So I promise to go back this weekend and snap some photos of each dish. Though tasting is believing! You will thank me later.

Delicious soul food with exceptional service and atmosphere. We loved the oxtails and rice, the shrimp and grits, and the cornbread with honey butter. Weโll be back when we visit LA again.

It's a new, lighter take on traditional soul food without sacrificing wonderful flavor. Not so much a neighborhood restaurant; it attracts destination diners resulting in a racially diverse experience that's rare to see.
