Be the first to ReplyTL;DR - Michelin Guide restaurant with unique food
TL;DR - Michelin Guide restaurant with unique food selections a la carte with reasonable prices. Dishes are refined and the chicken liver toast, bone marrow, and marrow burger are a must! Overall my #2 restaurant behind COTE nyc and Kinship DC! Food: refined dishes that are creative and Michelin star quality! I really enjoyed the soft shell crab. Fried to perfection accompanied with a unique green sauce that cut through the fatty fried crab. The only dish I didn't like was the duck confit. It was a bit dry on the outside and it was covered with fresh and dry herbs and spices that ended up being overpowering, and there was nothing to balance the greasiness of the duck confit. We didn't finish it. Service: solid service with a nice server who gave us recommendations for how to customize our selection and give the meal some balance. He gave us the dishes in the order he thought was best while taking into account each dish's unique qualities (like a fruit salad after the fried pig ear). Ambiance: simple decor with medium level of chatter buzzing about. Decor was a bit too simple, and I wish the place wasn't so grey and concrete, but hey the food slapped.

My husband picked this spot for date night some months back and we really enjoyed the meal and our night! It's one of the few LA restaurants that gave me that NYC vibe. What we ate: Chicken liver toast Hamachi tostada Crispy pig ears Crispy rice Sweetbreads Burger Dessert - sticky toffee cake of sorts Everything was delicious but I think the burger, sweetbreads, and chicken liver toast were the winners. They've got a nice wine menu as well and I had a glass of natural wine with dinner. Unfortunately, I think they are permanently closing their restaurant this summer..

How does this place still have 4 stars? I've been here three times. Twice before COVID, once after. It used to be great, but the place has gone tremendously downhill since COVID. I was so excited to go back, but it was truly the worst experience. Idk what was worse: the food or the service. JK, the food was definitely bad enough to take the cake on this one. I went with my boyfriend and 4 friends so we ordered a lot from the menu and got a pretty good sampling of everything... and absolutely none of it was good. In fact, it was hardly even what I would describe as edible and we actually didn't eat most of it, so it was a complete waste of money and food. Absolutely a let down and mildly infuriating (or wildly infuriating, I'm just trying to be level-headed). The chef seems to have some odd obsession with lime. I don't hate lime by any means, but there can certainly be too much of a good thing and this was WAY too much. The bone marrow had practically ZERO marrow and was all just a bunch of chimichurri on top of a bone. Absolute let down. The sweetbreads were bad, the duck was SO DRY and over cooked. Truly every dish was worse than the last Now for the service, our waiter was rude and for some reason didn't like the way we were ordering? Because we were three couples, and each couple wanted something different (and some had dietary restrictions), we were ordering multiple things per couple, but he didn't like that -- apparently we were supposed to order multiple things for the whole table and share them amongst ourselves. I don't really see what difference it makes since we definitely ordered plenty (so he didn't need to worry about not getting a big tip... but I'll get to the tipping in a bit). So what difference does it make to him if we split all the dishes among the whole table or just between the couples? Please make it make sense. (And to clarify, we paid the tab all on one card, so it couldn't have been an issue about complicating the bill either.) Anyways on to the tip... There is an automatic service charge (I believe it was 18%? Could've been a full 20%) and it was made loud and clear that this was NOT a tip. So let me get this straight, you want me to pay a ton of money for absolutely inedible food, then you're gonna charge me 18-20% on top of that, then you expect me to tip another 20% for rude service? Why not just charge the amount you wanted to charge for the dishes then? Is it because you know this is absurd? Anyways the experience was all around terrible and put me in a foul mood and I will never return to this place again. Which is so sad, because the food here really used to be divine.

Five stars, the wait staff is knowledgeable about every dish. I will be returning here. The ambiance is low lit and relaxing but the tables are tiny. Ended up getting a seat towards the end of the night and ate the star item. Enjoyed it. A lot of café put into every plate.

Went for my anniversary a month ago and had an awesome experience. Their pig ear and bone marrow dishes were amazing. We rave about wanting them til this day! We were also surprised by how delicious the liver toast was. I also recommend the skirt steak if available. Jacob was a great server! We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyI just read an article today that animal will be closing.
That devastates me to my very core. Animal was one of the best restaurants that LA had to offer. The food was phenomenal. The staff was wonderful. And the ambience was cozy and welcoming. I hope everybody has a chance to book a reservation before they close to experience one of LA's finest restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyAnimal has unique and delicious food, consistently.
It's one of my favorite spots for when I'm feeling like I want to splurge. It only loses one star because I really don't appreciate their policy of adding a 17% service surcharge onto every bill that is not a tip. It basically means that once you add tip, your bill is always an extra 40% on top of the subtotal. I'm all for service workers getting benefits and healthcare, but Animal charges premium prices for very small dishes and is always packed -- they should be able to take care of their staff with that revenue without having to pass the extra surcharge to customers.

4++ this restaurant, since it's opening has been doing a lot of things that I would credit how the LA food scene was shaped. Lots of fun, creative dishes that doesn't mind taking risks. It's small-ish, but the vibe is fun and lively, which is partially helped by the fact it's located in the heart of the hustle bustle area of Fairfax. The service is great as well. Came here a while, back with my roommate at the time and her sister and her sister's friend. We ordered a bunch of different things and feasted. I really wanted to try the foie gras loco moco and was very pleased with it. The heirloom tomatoes was also super delish. So much fun getting to try all the different items. Ideal size group would be 4-6 to get to order a lot of different things.
Be the first to ReplyAlways a delight to enjoy the best food.
The pork slider is a must! On a brioche bun and the pork is tender and full of flavor. Don't miss out on fresh, delicious goodness. Come try it for yourself.

It's not super crowded. Customer service was great. Food is like always- great. We ordered bone marrow, pigs ear, hamachi tostada, pork belly sliders, chicken liver toast, the carpaccio, and finished the dinner off with the mandarin orange tres leches. All super tasty and done well.

It was a relaxed ambiance by the bar area. The bartender was kind and friendly. My boyfriend and I ordered two glasses of wine each and we shared the bone marrow. The roasted bone marrow is paired with chimichurri and grilled bread. It was very tasty. FYI - the restaurant does not have a sign outside but it is across the street from Jon and Vinny's (one of their other restaurants). They charge an 18% service fee that is not considered gratuity. They expect another 15-20% to be added for gratuity. We were a bit surprised by this and felt it was ridiculous. Probably won't be back for a while for this reason.
Be the first to ReplyFood and service were great.
Didn't love the open room - extremely loud. Food was good but didn't love/understand the hype for the burger. The pate was phenomenal and bone marrow A!
Be the first to ReplyNeighborhood gem.
Each dish ordered was lovely and incredibly flavorful. Himachi crudo with fresh herbs was delicate and delicious. Roast beef in a lovely au jus. The carrots with labneh and hazelnuts were incredible. We will be back. I eat cannibal It's incredible. You bring out the animal in me. Roastin', toastin', you're the one I'm boastin'Eat me, eat you, incredibly delicious tooGourmet, flambe, serve you up an entreeIntake, home bake, you're the icing on the cake.
Be the first to ReplyWow, hands down one of my favorite restaurants in LA.
The flavors and ingredients are so unconventional, yet delicious.

I can't remember the last time I was here, maybe over a decade. It used to be the hottest restaurant and I remember everything being so good. I just went back recently on a Monday. I walked in without a reservation, and as the night went on, the restaurant had more people, but wasn't full. The hamachai and chicken liver were good but the bone marrow was flavorless. Ordering the bone marrow is basically ordering bread. The quail was whatever but the grits under it had a sweet and hearty flavor. My friend and I shared a bottle of Gamay, which was great. Finally, the check came and they have a service charge of 18%, then tell you that isn't the tip, so I tipped on time of that but I think that's ridiculous, so I probably won't go back for another decade or more.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a meal! The perfect way to end the week.
Tip: if you want to avoid having to find a parking spot since space is beyond limited, there's a small lot behind Dave's Hot Chicken. We learned this the hard way when every spot we found in the residential area turned out to be not available due to it being permit parking. We got there early, but ended up making it just in time for our reservation since we ended up wasting 10 mins looking for parking. It was fairly when we got there for our 7pm reservation. It quickly got full within about 30 mins. Our orders were:Chicken liver toastbbq pork belly sandwichPiri piri chicken wingsPig earsDuckTres lechesMarjolaine torteThat is exactly the order of the food coming out. I don't know who in the kitchen decided on the order, but you did good. That toast perfectly opened our palate. The rest of the dishes came out and were quickly devoured after we cut the serving in half. No plate looked like it had a trace of the dish by the time it left our table. The service was just as excellent. We were well taken care of and our glasses were always refilled with water without having to ask. I could've refilled it myself, but they were that attentive.Thank you Team Animal for a phenomenal meal!
Be the first to Replythere is nothing like it.
people need to thank these guys for making the LA restaurant scene what it is.

I went to see my daughter when she visited Palm Springs and LA as the entertainment committee while her boyfriend played business golf. This restaurant was recommended and I thought oh Lordy, another trendy place. Well that just goes to show that sometimes you need to take a leap. Lovely spot. Trendy, you bet. When I was a child we had three choices for Sunday supper. Fried chicken, fried quail or pot roast. I have had quail in various places but nothing touched my mamas. This one was like going back in time. Fried perfectly and served on polenta. I felt like I was home again. The rest of the menu as pretty adventurous but that quail was just the dang best I have ever had in a restaurant. And I didn't have to pick out the birdshot like at home! Lol. Excellent!
Be the first to ReplyThis is my second visit to Animal.
It was absolutely great. The bbq pork belly sandwich was fantastic. I've never had yams that were anything other than boring, but their boniato yam dish was outstanding. The Dolma Fried Rice was really good; never expected Animal would serve a fried rice dish, but it was terrific. Yummy hazelnut torte with coffee ice cream for dessert.Service was excellent. We had a third person join us unannounced, and they gladly re-seated us to a 4-top.No signage so it's tough to find but don't give up....it's totally worth it! (FYI it's just a few doors up from Canter's Deli on the same side of the street)
Be the first to ReplyEverything we had was so amazing from start to finish.
The one thing I wasn't happy with was the service. It seemed like they didn't want to really wait on me. When my bf arrived they seemed to be a bit more attentive. Our server seemed to not really want to be bothered. But the food made up for the lack of great service.

Not sure if they still have the foie gras loco moco, but that was pretty damn good. The gravy and the foie gras complemented each other perfectly. I would give this 5 stars, but I know the price has gone up and not sure if they still have foie gras now that it's banned in CA.

I came for my birthday brunch pre-COVID and enjoyed my experience! I'm a fan of Jon and Vinny's other restaurants, and Animal has always been on my radar for a fancier event. I came with my parents, and we're all fans of many of the interesting ingredients they use here. We went with a variety of dishes including the Chicken Liver Toast, Cornmeal Waffle, Bone Marrow, Boner Burger, Smoked Whitefish Salad, and Pig Ear. The dishes are definitely on the heavy side but the flavors are all bold and delicious. My favorite dishes were the Chicken Liver Toast and Bone Marrow. Service was great - they gave me a complimentary Cinnamon Roll at the end for my birthday, so thoughtful! I wouldn't be back regularly just because the menu options aren't what I typically crave, but Animal certainly excels at this niche cuisine.

5/5- Rounding up for great serviceCame here for a treat-yo-self dinner with my friend on a Sunday night around 6:30pm. The place was pretty packed but we got a table right away. Service was super friendly and enthusiastic. Everything came out at a great pace and was beautifully presented. The price is a bit steep but worth it for the quality. Parking in the area wasn't too bad and we found street parking a block or so away. For our meal my friend and I go the following:1) Chicken Liver Mousse Toast w/ Balsamic Shallot Jam: Our started and my absolute favorite item of the night. The liver wasn't gritty but still had such a rich flavor. The ratio of the liver to the thick crusty grilled bread was perfect. The balsamic shallot jam masked any livery stench and filled my nostrils with a rich deep sweetness. I'm drooling just thinking about it (5/5)2) Veal Tongue, West Indian Gherkin, Steelhead Roe, Black Mustard, Horseradish Cream: The plate was an artistic masterpiece. It's just so mesmerizing to look at I felt bad eating it. The taste was a bit all over the place since the mustard, gherkin, and horseradish all have their own unique tastes that do pair well with beef but clash a little with one another. Especially the gherkin which I found a bit too sweet. However I loved the ikura which had almost a smokey flavor to it. It almost tasted like there was bacon with the veal tongue (3.75/5)3) Hamachi Tostada: Friend's dish. I didn't try it but she enjoyed it though it was a bit pricey for the portion4) Rabbit Larb w/ New Zealand Spinach and Crispy Shallots: This was a fantastic take on larb! I've never had new zealand spinach but there's an addictive texture and strong flavor that makes it the perfect base for this dish. The rabbit meat is always a great substitute for chicken. It has a stronger flavor while maintaining a pretty similar texture. The dish was packed with spicy and tangy flavors. I loved it (4.5/5)Overall, I really enjoyed my meal here. There were so many things to choose from I had a hard time deciding. I will definitely have to make another trip here for another round of mousse toast and to try some of their other offerings!---The Re-Return: Chicken Liver Mousse Toast (& maybe some rabbit larb)---
