Wonderful dinner in Rome!
We loved our dinner and just had a wonderful time on our last night in Rome. We had to book 30 days in advance, and now we know why! The food and the charming ambiance are magical! The wine selection is lovely!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed after looking forward to eating here
Sadly, this was a big disappointment. A very hard reservation to get, our hotel got us in for dinner booking it as soon as they reopened from the holiday break. It was always a busy place, being 60 years old, but more so since Stanley Tucci featured it in his Searching for Italy Rome episode. This was the only restaurant where the waiters made me feel like they were doing me a favor serving us. My wife and I both had the Americana. I should have ordered the Cacio Pepe, but since I had eaten it elsewhere the night before, I wanted a switch. It was not a good choice for my taste, but my wife thought it was better the night before at another well known restaurant. I had no taste reference so I would not ding them for my opinion.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious lunch next to Pantheon
We had a most enjoyable lunch at this restaurant which is located just a stone's throw away from the Pantheon. To start off with, we had the mouth-watering Roman style artichoke with buffalo mozzarella. There is just something about the way Roman's prepare artichokes, you will not find better anywhere else. This was followed with classic pasta dishes of spaghetti cacio e pepe (peccorino cheese and black pepper) and rigatoni all'amatriciana (tomato sauce, peccorino cheese, pork cheeks and black pepper). Add a glass of wine and you have the great lunch.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing! Must try!
Absolutely excellent produce treated with love and care by the chefs - entree was lamb liver etc followed by roman grilled lamb - stunning - paired with chicory tips side - world class! The best meal in Roma! Highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyBook early for this excellent restaurant
I had a very enjoyable meal here, the spaghetti al gricia was delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices are a little high but what an amazing location, just steps from the Pantheon. Booking is essential, ideally a month or so before you plan to visit.
Be the first to ReplyThe best carbonara I've ever tasted
We'd seen this restaurant on TV when Stanley Tucci visited and booked dinner there for our trip to Rome. It did not disappoint! The carbonara was delicious, really the best either of us had ever had. I had the saltimbocca which was absolutely lovely and my husband had the lamb which was also really tasty. The service was perfect and the atmosphere very relaxed. We had no room left for desert unfortunately, but did manage to polish off two very nice bottles of chianti and left the restaurant feeling more than happy! Would really recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the Highlights of Our Time in Rome
This was one of the highlights of our time in Rome. A small family owned restaurant, it has been run by the Gargioli family since 1961 and serves authentic Roman classics. Alongside the carbonara and polpettine, you’ll see the traditional earthy dishes like tripe and lamb’s heart and chicken’s liver and lungs. In summer, the outside tables are the best seats, with a side view of the Pantheon. At night, with the Pantheon lit up, it really is a special place to eat. However we had not pre-booked so we had to wait for a table and were seated inside in booth style seating. The interior which has a very modest, folksy sort of decor which relies heavily on wood panelling. I started with the Filetto di aringa (herrings with beans, balsamic and red onion), followed by Saltimbocca alla Romana (veal with ham and sage, cooked in white wine). Both were absolutely delicious. Having failed to do pre-book, I’d definitely recommend booking and would recommend an outside table. Overall though, I’d happily sit wherever they put me because the food was that good. Note: Closed on Sundays

Be the first to ReplyAs good as Roman Cuisine gets
I feel honored to write a review for this restaurant. It is that good. One month before, we went on their website & made a reservation for 21:00. Do not even think you can just walk up to the door at opening time & get a table and this was off-season. I ordered a Sicilian, Nero d’Avola red wine with the oxtail & chicory. My wife had the spaghetti alla Grica with broccoli. We shared tiramisu and barrique grappa. The servers were very good & meal was reasonable.
Be the first to ReplyA lovely - though not unique - meal in Rome
This is absolutely a great place to eat. The real question is really regarding whether it lives up to the hype and/or is worth the trouble of booking. The answer is yes-ish. I would put this in the top 10-15% of restaurant experiences I've had in my 6+ trips to Rome. The location is wonderful for any tourist as it is so close to the Pantheon that you won't have to go to any trouble to find it. If you've never been to Rome or are staying in this area, it is worth it. I have, however, been to Rome on multiple occasions and favor staying in Trastevere. As such, the value of getting back to this area for my 9p reservation wasn't entirely worth it overall. Regarding booking, complaints in other reviews about this are ridiculous. The website is absolutely clear and I believe they take reservations about two weeks in advance - this is well within reason and makes sense in my mind for a high-demand location. It was easy to complete the reservation and a confirmation e-mail was sent. As far as timeliness, it was perfect. We were about 15 min early, checked in, then waited in Piazza della Rotunda until the designated time. One of the lovely points about Da Armando is that it is not jam packed with tables or people, thus allowing one to enjoy the experience. The pasta was very good, though nothing life-changing. The saltimbocca all Romana was out of this world, and possibly the most tender I have ever had in my life. I found the servers to all be helpful and friendly (keeping in mind I don't expect banal American-style friendliness from Roman servers). Overall, I would absolutely eat here again, but would most likely only do so if I was staying in this area, specifically had plans in this area, or was with someone who wanted to try it.
