🤢 2/5 - Talented chef but many disappointments

We really wanted to like this place, and thought the service was polite and the chef has great skill. But we did not enjoy ourselves and when customers are paying such prices and walk away without having enjoyed themselves it is a real shame.
The layout of the restaurant has inauspicious fengshui. As one example, the counter area is dark and foreboding. It feels like the guest is entering and eating inside a dragon’s mouth. There is too much activity around the counter and in front and behind all guests to really feel comfortable. When food arrives, every party gets served at the same time and gets the same explanation from their server simultaneously — many people talking all at the same time — which makes it really noisy and difficult to hear. The layout intimates chef’s insistence that everyone watch his masterful performance, which is a rather egocentric approach to hospitality.
For a Korean restaurant that is trying to showcase Korean culinary heritage — which we highly respect and enjoy — there was an over reliance of core ingredients mainly from Japan and some from the USA. We would have thought more highly of the restaurant if Korean produce were spotlighted.
Desserts were insubstantial and showcased no particular pastry-chef skill worth 2 Michelin stars. In fact the whole meal was not substantial. Do not come hungry or you will leave hungry. Toward the end of the meal my dining companion was planning how to get a “real meal” in Koreatown.
We were surprised not to be offered a chance to have a digestif after the meal, or even just to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. Instead the bill was foisted on us and every other party when we had not even finished our dessert. So we felt rushed out.
We are not fine dining novices. We have been to Michelin starred (and non-starred) restaurants in NYC, Seoul, and around the world. We are happy to give credit where due. Atomix falls short.
