🤮 1/5 - Terrible food, crazy expensive, bunch of cheap b*******

This place is so bad in so many ways.
The service was friendly enough at first, but then peters off in attention and friendliess. We all ordered the vegetarian burgers. Think compressed sawdust discs, no flavour, the texture of wallpaper paste, served with a tablespoon's worth of wilted coleslaw. These discs were clearly straight from Aligro or some other "Costco for restaurants" kind of business and could not have cost them more than 1 Fr. apiece. Yet they have the gall to charge 29 Fr. for it. Seriously, the worst so-called veggie burger we have ever had. Worse than the terrible veggie burgers marketed by the country's two main grocery store chains (they're terrible, but nowhere close to as bad as August's).
You do get the choice of sides to go with it (fries, spätzli, salad), but that will cost you 7 Fr. extra, and only the salad seemed to be vaguely worth it. The fries were okay, but clearly of frozen origin, and the spätzli was the worst I've ever had. Ever.
Would you like some water? You can never go wrong with tap water, so that's what we ordered. We received a bottle of it (just their own branded bottles, which they fill from the tap as requested.) But lo and behold, what's this on the bill at the end? 6 Francs per bottle! For tap water! We purposely asked for tap water to avoid the silliness of bottled water and to save a few bucks on what was going to be an expensive meal (and we don't believe in bottled water; I mean in this day and age, who is stupid enough to buy that stuff?). When people ask for tap water, it's clear they are trying to save money and the planet, so the waitress COULD have said "That's going to cost you 6 Francs, so you may as well have a beer or soft drink instead." But no, she conveniently omitted that. Maybe it's a Zurich thing.
When I received the bill, I asked her what the mystery "soda ohne" was (I know what it means, soda water without (bubbles)), but I was surprised to see it there. She says that's standard practice in Switzerland and a lot of other countries like France, which was a blatant lie. I promptly pointed out the erroneous nature of her statement: it is rare to be charged for tap water in France, in other Swiss cantons (we've been living here and have toured the country extensively and have never been charged for it), and even in Zurich. Bärengasse, an upscale restaurant in Zurich, is wonderful and is classy enough not to charge for tap water or sneer at you if you prefer it. Yes, most restaurants will charge a crazy amount for bottled water, and yes, many waiters will get annoyed with you if you ask for tap water, but you will get it and you won't be charged for it. So I call bull****.
The fact that this place charges 6 Fr. for tap water can only be a sign of one of two things:
(a) this place is desperately clinging to dear life and has to nickel and dime people to save their skin (seriously, 29 Fr. for a veggie burger from veggie hell should more than cover the cost of filling a bottle), or
(b) the owners are greedy scumbags.
I vote both.
Water is a common courtesy, a friendly gesture that says "welcome", a right. For what it costs them (0.000001 Fr./litre), it's simply vulgar that they would charge for it.
When you eat out in Zurich, it's safe to say that you will often pay a hefty price for a decent meal. But this place charges a hefty price for store-bought slop.
Total cost of this meal for 2 adults, 2 kids, including 4 burgers, 4 sides, 2 bevs (juice and coffee) and the most expensive tap water on earth: CHF 167.50. That's US$183, C$224.41 (Canadian), 240 Australian dollars... You get the picture.
