Good, hearty, casual, contemporary Taiwanese fare
A busy, casual, kinda LA hip-ish, Taiwanese restaurant with a small but very well done menu, including vegetarian /vegan options. Their take on mapo tofu, served with rice, was really good as were the scallion pancakes. They also serve tea, beer, wine and a selection of sake. You order at the counter and take a number to your table. The food is served quite quickly. Portions are good, too. Would definitely return when back in LA.

(*Français*) Nous avons vraiment bien mangé. Le service était rapide et efficace. L'ambiance était étonnamment chill. Les plats étaient délicieux, parfumés, avec une superbe présentation. (*English*) We had a very nice meal. The service was good and we didn't wait a long time. The atmosphere was surprisingly chill. Downtown outpost of popular Taiwanese spot. Came here with a couple other friends on a Saturday night around 7:30pm and there was a short line, but we didn’t have to wait too long. Metered street parking. Indoor and outdoor parking available. Credit cards accepted. They do serve alcohol. It’s good for small groups though they did have an indoor table that fit one larger group. The popcorn chicken was a generous size and was very crispy. I would get that again as well as the Dan Dan noodles. I also did like the beef roll, which came cut into 4 slices. The shrimp wontons came in 5 and were decent. The Taiwanese sausage sticky rice was alright but I wouldn’t get it again, nor would I get the egg and chive pockets. The dessert mochi had both peanut sprinkling as well as black sesame. I think there was too much of the dusting and not enough mochi, but I did enjoy the dessert. The waiters were all really nice.

A tad noisy and you may have to sit outside because it’s so popular. It’s an interesting Taiwanese take on some classic dishes such as Mapo (mau po) Tofu. We had the chicken and Dan Dan noodles as well and they were fantastic, if a little different from what you may expect if you’re used to the usual Cantonese style. The staff were great too, as they missed my beer on the first go and then comped one of the dishes. Tasty.
Be the first to ReplyCasual Taiwanese Restaurant with Tea
I lost my old mom and pop Taiwanese restaurant a few years ago because it wasn't popular and they went out of business and have been looking for traditional Taiwanese beef soup forever. They have a more clean and modern twist on Taiwanese but all of the dishes are there. Well priced, good variety, and cute outdoor seating area during COVID. Highly recommend their boba teas. Boba was fresh and tea was perfect, not too sweet and could taste the tea. Very happy with this find.
Be the first to ReplyEXCELLENCE IN SERVICE AND FOOD!!!
I don't even know where to begin with this establishment. It was all just... SO GOOD!!!! From the initial phone call to inquire about which sake would be best for warming at home, to the ordering process, then to the next call to see if we could push our order time back 15 minutes, to the FOOD which was absolutely delicious, to the call to the manager to ask about something that we mistakenly forgot to order, then to surprise text message I received with a bonus gift card! So this is where I will begin -- My fiance and I were looking for a new restaurant to try for our Engagement Anniversary / Valentine's Day. We stumbled upon Joy and Pine & Crane not knowing initially that they are sister restaurants. Both looked amazing so we thought we'd give one a try. Pine & Crane was the one we chose. While placing the order online, I noticed there wasn't any to go options for hot sake, so I called to inquire. The sweet young woman who answered the phone was incredibly helpful and asked around to her colleagues (during a V-Day rush I might add) to ask which one they thought would be best to take home and warm. They suggested the Panda, and even gave me some instruction how to best warm it for optimal taste. I went on the site to complete the order with the Panda in my cart, or so I thought. More on that later.... After placing the order, I realized with the distance between my home and the restaurant that I likely would not be there in the time I chose on their very simple and easy to use online ordering system, so I called to request a time change. Nina answered and couldn't have been more pleasant and accommodating. She said that in order to change the time, she would have to cancel the order outright and replace it with a different order. Not wanting her to go through the trouble, I just told her to keep the initial time and I would get there as soon as I could. She then kindly offered to continue checking up on my order to make sure nothing was getting cold. I mean, who does that?! Especially when they are super busy filling holiday orders! Such wonderful service. Nina then told me to ask for her when I arrived so she could personally double check the order to make sure all looked good. WOW! Once I arrived to pickup my order, I was extremely impressed with the COVID safe pickup system. The employees are all inside of the restaurant with two fast and efficient pickup windows positioned behind plexiglass. The pickup lines are clearly marked and there are markings on the ground to notate the six foot distance between waiting patrons. When it was my time to pick up the order, I arrived at the window and asked for Nina as instructed. Nina came to the window (masked like all employees) with such a jovial attitude and genuine smile (with her eyes). She remembered who I was and went back to check on my order. When she came back with it, she told me she threw in a few extra side orders of white rice and a "Homemade Dan Kit" in case the Dan Dan Noodles we ordered were cold when I got back home. This was such a wonderful touch! She then told me if there was anything that wasn't to my liking, to please call her back. I mean, can this service get any better? Well, actually yes it can! As most will probably agree, take-out during the pandemic typically does not taste as good as it does when dining at the restaurant. That is probably the case all the time, but I digress. Once I arrived home with our food and we began eating, our mouths and stomachs were not only incredibly satisfied, but also amazingly impressed with how delicious the food actually was, even as take out! The only "issue" was, we didn't get the Panda sake we thought we ordered. So I called Nina... and the excellent service continues... I spoke with Nina AGAIN and informed her that we did not receive the Sake we ordered. She remembered the conversation about me wanting a sake that could be warmed at home, even though she wasn't even the one I was talking to on the phone! So she goes into the system to check our order and lets me know that the sake never made it on the actual order which is why it didn't make it into my bag. I must have forgotten to press "ADD TO CART" and felt really bad for bothering her with my mistake. She then told me not to worry, that next time I came she would treat me to some sake. I thanked her and went back to my satisfied belly full of delicious Taiwanese food. THEN... 30 minutes later, I receive a text message saying Pine & Crane has sent me a gift card in the amount of the sake. Like I said, the service actually got even better! In closing, Nina and the entire staff at Pine & Crane should be awarded for their excellent service and delicious food. I just wish I would have known about this restaurant sooner. Now I know the first place I will go for dinner once the pandemic is over. Thank you Nina and Pine & Crane for making our engagement anniversary extra special. We can't wait to have a glass of sake with you in person.
Be the first to ReplyCasual Taiwanese fusion
Was a bit tricky to find it, and maybe a bit tricky to find parking nearby, but we liked this restaurant a lot to come here twice. I would classify this place as a Taiwanese fusion - the food is fairly Taiwanese, but tailored to include a more general clientele, including non-Taiwanese diners. There is always a line in front, first come, first served. You line up, order your food, get your drinks, and sit on a table where they will bring your food. Our waits were typically 20 minutes before seating. In both our visits, we ordered three small salad dishes (you can chose three of the available dishes), like wood ear, lotus root, and seaweed salad. The three cup chicken was particularly successful with my family. We also had the fried pork buns (this is actually Shanghainese), beef noodle soup, dan dan noodles, and even a rice bowl with minced pork. And several options for Taiwanese milk tea/boba drinks. The place also seems popular with vegetarians, as they offer vegetarian mapo tofu and three cup mushroom, instead of chicken. I am not sure this was the best Chinese/Taiwanese restaurant we've ever been - me, I like things a bit spicier - but it is the one where all members of my family, with different tastes, enjoyed the food enough to crave a second time. Even now, almost a year after our visit, we still remember the place.

The food was great. Our favorite dish was the beef noodle soup. Friendly staff. Due to COVID all seating is outside. Dogs are welcome.

I've truly been striking out in the LA dining scene. My dinner at Pine and Crane was disappointing. Based on the reviews and suggestions from friends I projected that I was in for a dining experience of a lifetime. Unfortunately, Pine and Crane does not live up to the hype. Coming from the New York dining scene, I am used to authentic flavors. All of the food at Pine and Crane was extremely bland. We had to return two dishes because they were tasteless. The food was missing the basil, chili pepper ect. The service also left a lot to be desired. After waiting in line for 20+ minutes, I would expect the waitstaff to be organized. I received the wrong Boba tea twice. I was offered another Boba tea "on the house" to make up for the disappointing food and service, and that Boba tea was also wrong.
