Disappointing
Mediocre. Not a very interesting menu. Felt like an up market chain. Food dull. Very old fashioned โFrenchโ menu. Only chose it because it was near the Almeida theatre and wont be returning This restaurant needs a make over, it would be better as an Ivy franchise as at least that menu is more diverse. DULL DULLL DULLLL
Be the first to ReplyGreat place shame about the wait
I wanted my brother to get the experience as he was taking me out for a birthday lunch. The food was superb and the service when it came top notch. But, they were SERIOUSLY understaffed, just two waiters for the whole restaurant and they were valiantly trying to do their best but everyone was kept waiting and while a lovely ambience we got a bit impatient between courses, staring at empty plates etc. but food delicious and the staff were as nice as pie. And so professional
Be the first to ReplyInconsistent - due to close for refurbishment
Eaten at Bellanger several times and whilst we like the room the food can be inconsistent and pricey for the offer. Our latest lunch pre closure did not deliver anything we can get in Cote for 20% less. As an aside Cote Islington closed and an Italian pizza pasta place has arrived. Now the Wolsey group has been taken over the plan is to close and refurbish the restaurant. In an era when all restaurants are having to increase prices to cover running costs we hope the new offer here and standard of food goes up a notch. At present we find it inconsistent. The damage - no wine lunch - ยฃ34 each.
Be the first to ReplyCooking needs a makeover
Have been going here ever since it opened and was delighted when it reopened after the pandemic - despite announcing previously it was closed for good. Itโs still a great place with good atmosphere and charming staff. But service was erratic tbh and the waits for drinks etc just too long. The main problem is the food. The menu has been shrunk so they should be able to deliver at least the same quality as before. Instead it is very much worse. This is the 2nd time Iโve looked at my plate and thought that looks like something youโd cook at home on a week night - only not as good. Last night I had the mushroom bourguignon. Tired plate of mushrooms and big chunks of hard carrot in practically no sauce and no hint of the burgundy. Last time I had coq au Riesling which used to be served in a charming mini casserole - now just slopped on the plate and with none of the previous rich flavours. The restaurant is having a makeover. I hope itโs a triumph but letโs hope they focus mostly on making over the food.
Be the first to ReplyDine in Paris without the nuisance of the Eurostar!
To get the experience of travelling to Paris and dining out in the 1950s, enjoy this delightful restaurant. Beautiful zinc bar, well stocked with excellent quality wine. Great menu, friendly and efficient service. In all ways, a lovely experience. I highly recommend it.

Be the first to ReplyLovely relaxed Sunday brunch
Met family friends for a relaxed Sunday brunch. Good choice of food both for adults and children; the chocolate crepes were a huge hit. Great service, great food and lovely atmosphere. Really enjoyable experience and we will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyAwful service
Don't waste your time going here! We were given a table fairly promptly, but no menus. Had to prompt staff for some menus. After about 20 minutes no one had come to take our order. We asked a waiter and he dismissively told us to wait a minute. We continued to be ignored and after waiting in total over 30 minutes, we decided to leave the restaurant. The staff didn't even bat an eye lid. They were too busy just standing around talking. Not sure if we were treated this way as we are people of color, but either way it was a very disappointing experience. Would not return; there are plenty of other restaurants in London that appreciate the custom.

Not only waited quite a bit for the food to arrive but the waiter wasn't that bothered whether you got what you ordered. Dishes were served randomly, so everyone around table ended up with someone else's order. You get more competent service at the fast food outlet. Food was quite basic and didn't look anything special. Wouldn't come back and wouldn't recommend it. Definitely you not quality/value for money
Be the first to ReplyYou'd get better service and food in McDonald's
Rude, unprofessional staff who randomly plonk the food in front of you, without checking of that is what you'd ordered. We had to swap around all the plates. The food tasted like microwaved leather smothered in copious amounts of salt and pepper. Not that any of the staff cared that we left most of our food. We wasted ยฃ250. We were entertaining visitors it was embarrassing. If it were down to me, I would have walked out.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful meal
Just returned from another great night eating dinner with friends at Bellangers. It is always a total treat and starts with the warmth of the welcome, wonderful white tablecloths, service and the food. It was a very happy summers evening with colleagues talking about life and enjoying food and wine. What more can we ask for. Thank you to Jo and the team.
Be the first to Reply15% service charge, really?!
Overpriced, as food is just average. 15% service charge?! Come on! (service was far from warranting a ridiculously high service chargeโฆ) Also, big typo on the menu: itโs โplatโ (main dish), not โplรขtโโฆ adding random accents to make a place sound French is always risky!

Wonderful evening at Bellanger and the food was great. A huge thank you to Bear who helped make my birthday dinner extra special xx
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful place turned mediocre
What happened to the excellent food, vegetarian menu, and elegant European waiters? The service has worsened considerably, non of the old-fashioned decorum of before, and the food has gone from delicious to very mediocre. My gem lettuce salad had about two drops of dressing on it and the souffle was tiny and so-so. Nothing felt fresh. Did this place change owner or management? A huge shame, since the atmosphere itself is great and the tables well distanced apart.
Be the first to ReplyPoor service
Busy Sunday but staff too concerned about a couple of private areas rather than serving existing customers. Breakfast of poor quality, burnt, over salty and key components missing from breakfast. No apology or interest in the customer experience. Used to be one of my favourite haunts but sadly not any more.

Always a pleasure to come back to this relaxed haven in the bustle of Islington. Our dogs love it, too (perhaps because of the specially prepared dog that they always get offered). Limited but good menu.. very pleasant service
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Wedding Anniversary Lunch! Along with the dog!
We were there on 26 May at 1pm INO of Bruce. Superb service from start to finish. The dog was fussed over and given water and biscuits. Our meal was excellent and there was no rush to leave. The wine list is good and not over-priced. Will shall return! Many thanks to the staff and chef.
Be the first to ReplyStill excellent but not perfect
For our second time at Bellanger we had another flammenkueche which I recommend (one of the only places in London where you can get one) even though I really regret the fact that they don't offer a "gratinee" version with cheese. This was more of a personal issue though as I am sure their "smart" approach of the dish satisfies London customers. We also had snails which were perfect, and our mains were the Bourguingon (which I think has now gone off the menu) and the Coq au Riesling, the latter was perfectly executed and delicious, but the Bourguignon lacked thickness and flavours in the sauce. Again outstanding service and great environment, but some issues with the dish. I still recommend it!!!
Be the first to ReplyA bit disappointing
We had high hopes visiting this restaurant but left underwhelmed. The service was good but the food was bang average. It wasn't unpleasant just nothing special in the slightest, the bread would have broken teeth it was that hard. Won't be back.
Be the first to ReplyA pleasant place on Islington Green
This is a very traditional braserie serving a French Menu in the heart of Islington. The only drawback here are the number of wailing infants whose parents are apparently oblivious to the fact that their offspring disturb everyone else's peace and quiet.
Be the first to ReplyFabuous! Like being in Paris
We had a fabulous experience at Bellanger on Saturday - family meal for four, all of whom have a real penchant for French cuisine having spent many extended periods living in France. Greeting and service were impeccable and discreet. Nothing was too much trouble, and the food was delightful, although portions were rather large! Atmosphere was buzzing and the surroundings were like being in the heart of an authentic high end Parisian bistro. Loved every minute - our waiter was so attentive and helpful. Cannot wait for our next visit. Thank you Bellanger.
Be the first to ReplyBad experience
Awful experience with the Manager Joanna Cromwell. She talk to customers like a gangster, so rude and very unprofessional person to be working in the hospitality industry where the service is essential. Really bad experience
Be aware that they charge ยฃ2 for tab water (bottle also dirty m) even they said itโs filter water lol (fancy way to justify the charge) General waitress are good, and food is ok.
Joanna AKA gangsta
An excellent dinner experience!
Having looked at a few options for dinner on Upper Street we picked Bellanger and couldn't have been happier with the result.
Admittedly it didn't get off to a good start when we asked for a gluten free menu and were told "almost all the dishes contain gluten". However, when we finally got hold of the duty manager it became clear that almost all the dishes could be adjusted with no trouble! This even led to them providing some cheese on (GF) toast to accompany the soup, instead of the cheese covered baguette normally served.
The soup, smoked salmon (a huge serving) and snail hors d'oevres were excellent. I was a bit disappointed by the schnitzel, but I guess it was as advertised. The serving of skinny fries was a good size however - none of the usual "10 chips maximum" one often gets in such establishments. The sea bass was excellent.
For dessert we had an excellent creme brulee and perfectly acceptable crumble and macaroons (not together).
The price was a little steep, but the service was good throughout and we would happily return here again.
Simple Brasserie fayre in classy surroundings
It disappeared altogether, I think, even before Covid, so itโs impressive that it has emerged from the pandemic stronger than ever. This, I suspect, is because it has a more informal menu evidenced by quite a large proportion of those dining this Saturday lunchtime tucking into brunch-ey favourites such as omelettes aux fines herbes or smoked salmon and frites. In fact my wife sampled smoked salmon herself. My daughter opted for fish goujons, a sort of French version of fish gingers whilst I sampled the signature dish coq au Riesling. I recall a coq au vin here served with vegetables in a large pot. Coq au Riesling comprised two chicken thighs on a plate with a silky mash and a sophisticated sauce with grapes. But I couldnโt help thinking one pays here for the upkeep of these elegant premises with artistic posters on the walls - think an advertisement for a Maurice Esteve exhibition next to one for the French Alps by rail in the 1930s - than the cuisine as many of the ingredients are altogether more prosaic. There is an extensive wine list but beer has to be specifically requested. A pint of fruity meteor went down a treat.
Be the first to ReplyPleasant but Pricey Rive-Gauche bistro in Islington
Pleasant, civilised if inevitably pricey place on Islington Green, good for after-dinner coffee and pud. We enjoyed the Coupe Amandine (ยฃ8.50), together with espresso and a glass of Corbiรจres la Bastide (ยฃ8.75). ยฃ41.69 for three (including 15% service charge).
