Spanish tapas is a challenging cuisine to accomplish
Spanish tapas is a challenging cuisine to accomplish successfully, especially here stateside, but the team at Bellota has managed to succeed on every level from their eclectic menu filled with an abundance of choices to their attentive service to the modernity of their dining room and bar. Located on the ground floor of the historic 888 Brannan building that houses the Gift Center and Jewelry Mart in San Francisco's Showplace Square neighborhood, Bellota comes from The Absinthe Group, which is a variety of San Francisco restaurants owned by Bill Russell-Shapiro and led by Eric Vreede, but the current success of Bellota should be credited to Executive Chef Gonzalo Tecuaque, who is the embodiment of the American dream as he worked his way up from dishwasher to line cook to running a kitchen of his own. At Bellota, Chef Tecuaque brings the flavors of his native Veracruz, Mexico to the kitchen's traditional Spanish cuisine by utilizing California's farm fresh ingredients. What brought me here was the fact that Bellota was participating in San Francisco's Restaurant Week for the Spring of 2024, in which local restaurants participate in a week-long promotion where they give diners the opportunity to order a pre-fix meal sold at an affordable price. This way local restaurateurs get to enjoy a little extra business in what is normally a slower time of year, and locals and out-of-towners alike can enjoy a business without breaking the bank. Usually restaurants that participate in Restaurant Week either select the three courses that you are enjoying at a certain price point, or they let you select from three sections of preselected menu items. Here at Bellota, the latter is the case, but with four people in our party our server let us know that they serve their menu items family style for the entire table to enjoy. So we feasted on three dishes from their Pintxo section of their special menu, four dishes from the Tapas section of their special menu, and servings of their Postres or desserts. To begin our meal, we each enjoyed their Bombas de Arroz which are bomba rice fritters topped with romesco and piquillo peppers. Then we shared two servings each of their Serrano platter, which was sliced jamón serrano served with pan con tomate, and their Queso which was a Spanish version of a cheese plate which was filled with manchego cheese, membrillo which is a sweet paste that pairs well with manchego and torta de aceite, which is a Spanish sweet biscuit. For our entrées, enjoyed their Gambas, which are olive oil poached gulf prawns served in garlic and chili and served with toasted baguettes; their Carrilladas, which were braised pork cheek served on a bed of potato puree, baby carrots and English peas; their Esparragos which are California green asparagus, topped with poached eggs, manchego foam and olive oil migas; and their Bravas which are their crisped-Kennebec potatoes, served on bed of chipotle bravas salsa and topped with smoky aioli. There was so much food to enjoy over these first two courses we could not decide which ones were our favorites, but the highlights for us had to have been their Serrano jamón during our first course, and both the Gambas and Carrilladas during our main course, as all three dishes were composed in such a thoughtful way as every ingredient was used with purpose and therefore every mouthful turned out to be a feast for the senses. The meat was so tender that it melted in your mouth, the shrimp so flavorful and abundant that our party of four could not finish every bite. For our dessert course we enjoyed their Crema Catalana which was their galleta de anise or creme brûlée topped with fresh berries. It was the perfect way to end the perfect meal, and our bill was a little over two hundred dollars, which in this day and age is a real steal considering the cost and the amount of ingredients that went into each dish. When looking at their regular dinner menu, they have a regular tasting menu sold at fifty dollars a diner, when it is not restaurant week, which too seems like a real deal, and their signature paellas averaged only 60 dollars, which is something I would come back for no matter the price. With live music playing in their lively bar, and an open kitchen that abuts their entrance, it's a real show going here on a daily basis, and I would personally raise a glass of Tempranillo wine now that I know what a real gem that Belotta happens to be!

Came here with my friend for SF Restaurant week! For $45/person, we shared: * Their bomb rice fritters: tasty- crispy and has a little of sweetness to them * Serrano ham and their bread with the tomato spread - a classic! * Queso - delicious manchego * Gambas - Juice and well cooked shrimps, great sauce to dip in * Carriladas - the braised pork cheek was tender and it went really well with the potato purée * Crema Cataleña - Great dessert to end our meal! Reminds of a creme brûlée Definitely a great way to try Bellota for a great value! Service was efficient and the decor was really nice inside!

Came for SF restaurant week! Started with house vermut, and it was satisfying. Hint of being back in Spain! Serrano - okay, enjoyed the pan con tomate, wanted more. Manchego- comes with 2 carb types, both tasty! Bombas de arroz - fun fritters! Enjoyed this. Croquettes - small, unexpected sweetness! Gambas - poached prawns in garlic chili and crispy bread! Carrilladas - braised pork cheeks, soft and savory! Over a tasty bed of potatoes, peas, and carrots! Crema catalana- the cream brûlée, doesn't required the spoon to crack the sugar topping.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite tapas spots in the bay.
The squid ink paella is on point especially with that soccarat. The branzino was cooked perfectly. Good selection of iberico jamon but dang those patatas bravas animal style w iberico hit hard.
Be the first to ReplyWent for Dinner Food - 4/5.
Bravas had a good crunch and were seasoned well. I was disappointed that the sauces were quiet standard and the overall dish barely differentiated itself from regular french fries. Tortilla was smooth with bits of soft potato. The crisped Brussels were great at giving it texture and some flavor as well since the tortilla itself was on the bland side. Pulpo was great having a tender bite and avoiding any kind of rubbery mouthfeel. It had good seasoning and the bits of char gave it extra flavor. Pescado had the iconic firm fish texture and the generous amounts of mojo rojo gave it a creamy and smoky flavor. The coco bread was a great accompaniment and the pickled onions acted as a nice palate cleanser. Both paella flavors were excellent with their own distinct taste. Lechon was rich and hearty from the pork and root vegetables. Mariscos was elegant and light from the fresh seafood and peppers. Rice really soaked up the flavors of each and formed a nice crust at the bottom. Service - 4/5. Professional and courteous service befitting a fine dining establishment. Value - 2/5. The price tag really made you ask yourself "it was good, but was it many dollars good?" to which I would say it goes from varies to no. The tapas were the worst offenders as the all vegetable tortilla was a whopping $26; definitely not worth it. Bravas being $18 and being so simplistic also gave me buyer's remorse and for $26, the pulpo was too small. While on the expensive side, the $48 pescado and $68 paella was at least a delicious experience with good portion sizes. I understand that prices reflect the area, but this was too much. A Spanish restaurant located in SoMa, conveniently located near all the bars. It's actually in airbnbs HQ do you get glimpses of their super nice office! Highlights: bravas: these are actually divine definitely the highlight of the entire meal- perfectly crispy and it's dipped in the same sauce as the paella mamacita: it's a tropical cold brew cocktail so you get the sweetness from a marg but then the coffee of an espresso martini yum Our table also got two salads (both I personally can pass on) and the paella (the pork belly one is pretty good kinda like an adobo dish but there wasn't much char from a traditional paella dish that I like) All and all a great place for tapas & girls night- personally would stick to appetizers instead of a big meal
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely delicious and loved attention to detail service.
I'm pretty down to earth but it's nice when there is a difference made and service and quality.

Came here for a corporate team dinner and it was a great experience!! We ended up ordering a huge amount of food and had so many leftovers but the food was great. Would say the paella could have some more flavor especially the seafood one but the other tapas were great :)
Be the first to ReplyCame here for a Valentine's Day dinner and had a great time.
We had a reservation and were seated immediately. The food was not only delicious, but also had amazing presentation. The live music added a nice touch to the overall vibe of the restaurant as well. We ordered the bravas and the lechon and mariscos paella. The potatoes in the bravas dish were delightfully crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and the perfect shared plate to munch on while we were waiting for the paella to come. Both paella dishes were beautiful and tasty; I loved the variety of the seafood on the mariscos and how tender the pork was on the lechon dish. The dinner was a bit on the pricier side, but I'd say it was worth it for a special date night. Overall great meal and great experience!

Discovered an almost $700 charge on my credit card when NEVER there. Awaiting a call from someone from the restaurant to address their corrective action. A police report has been filed. Unbelievably upsetting.
Be the first to ReplyGorgeous interior but imo best bar/lounge in SF.
Sat at bar and caught up w an old friend. Nice buzz on a Wednesday night. 2 burgers couple cocktails each and dessert. Really glad they updated the menu and especially happy they added a delicious signature burger w a blend of Iberico pork and beef. Friendly pro service.

I used to love everything I had from here but the Setas paella was not great. Rice was not throughly cooked, and the radish did not seem to go well with the rest of ingredients.

I'd purchase a gallon of the pomegranate caramel that came with the flan de naranja, and that's about the only memorable thing from this evening. The food at Bellota is not bad by any means, but it certainly doesn't taste like it's from Spain (source: I grew up in Spain). The prices attached to the menu items are also nowhere near those you'd be paying for paella in Spain. I'm definitely feeling underwhelmed with a dinner that consisted of 4 items that I spent $200+ on. We ordered the bravas and coliflor, both of which tasted good but nothing to write home about. The sauce underneath the coliflor tasted very acidic which was unexpected for a creamy sauce. Not my favorite. For our main, we shared the paella de setas which also didn't taste like any vegetarian paella I've ever had and ended up being the priciest item of the evening. Again, it wasn't bad but if I was to come back, I wouldn't reorder it. The best item we had tonight was the flan. I'm normally not a fan of flan because of its jello-like texture, but this was really firm and tasted almost like a cheesecake. Also, as mentioned, the pomegranate caramel was a 10/10. Service was good - not very friendly but not bad at all. Ambiance was stellar; the restaurant is located in a gorgeous and very artsy space and the live music was a nice touch. Don't know if I'll necessarily be back but I'm glad I tried it out!
Be the first to ReplyThis is Bellota which means acorn in Spanish .
The name is derived from the acorn feed they feed the pigs . There were no acorns in the menu. Sorry squirrels . Located near mission bay adjacent to REI, indulge in the flavors of Spain at Bellota. Pair their innovative paella or medium sized tapas with their hand-crafted cocktails . Here are some food we tried : 1 . Croqueta- jamón-&-green garlic croqueta, pickled ramp, green garlic salsa 2 . Pan- toasted, Spanish-style bread, tomate fresco, garlic olive oil 3 . Paella costilla - paella of pimenton-braised short rib, gypsy pepper, cherry tomato, romano bean, torpedo onion https://www.instagram.com/reel/CwCIN6LKHi_/?igsh=ZDE1MWVjZGVmZQ==
Be the first to ReplyI generally only write reviews for places that I enjoy so
I generally only write reviews for places that I enjoy so much that I'm excited to get on here and support them. Sadly, love and enthusiasm for this place is not what's pushing me to write this review tonight. I just could not recommend this place to anyone, for any occasion.Price & value: I'll start here because I think that this place was really very expensive for what it was and did not represent any sort of value for money and I think it's hard to forget how expensive this place was as I think about how off everything was. Honestly, this review might sound harsh but I think that for over $200 out the door for 2 people in this city, you just have to do much, much better. There are so many AMAZING restaurants in this town at every price point and this is just not a good spot for any amount of money. The food was genuinely bad, the space was not comfortable.Space: A very big restaurant that doesn't feel cozy. When we went, there was an extremely loud live band. We weren't alone in feeling like it was too loud as several folks who sat down after us asked to move before ordering. The lights were inexplicably bright in the half of the restaurant we had been seated in while they were much more appropriately dim in the rest of the space (farther from the music).Food: Modern interpretations of classic dishes are always tricky but Bellota certainly did not succeed in their updated interpretations. 1. The Gildas were practically inedible. The olive was stuffed with a tiny bit of fish paste rather than having an actually piece of anchovy on the tooth pick (presumably a cost savings for them). I'm not sure if the olive was also pickled or if the incredible intensity of the pickling on the pepper just gave that impression, the pepper was huge and so intense that to call it an assault on the mouth would not be an overstatement. Perhaps an actual anchovy would have helped cut the acidity? 2. The Patatas Bravas were ok. The cook on the potatoes was fine but not fantastic (really didn't have a super even cook throughout the batch and none of the potato pieces had that super crisp outside + soft inside that you really want). The sauce was not good at all.3. The Paella. So first of all, there are 4 options (I wouldn't call any of them traditional)... the fact that individually they cost 52-62 but if you get a split, no matter which two you get, the price is $68? Frustrating. Perhaps it would all be ok if the paella was delicious, but it was not. We got the two that our waiter told us were the most popular (the mushroom and the squid). I was really excited for the mushroom as I love morels. Sadly, they were just not. The most prominent taste was of wine not yet fully cooked off, the general mushy texture... Not good. The menu says their paella serves 2-4 people. I would say minimum of 4 people if you order anything else and you can't get a smaller size, even though they sold their "split" offering to almost every table we saw (which is two half portions). Most tables around us did not seem to finish their paella. Wine: I'm not an expert in Spanish wines but I do especially love Lopez de Heredia. The offer their wines by the bottle where prices get crazy pretty fast. A $28 bottle of their Vina Cubillo sells there for $70. A $48 bottle of the Vina Tondonia sells there for $150. The fact that the cheapest glass of Rioja on the menu was $19 seemed kind of crazy (it was a drinkable glass but certainly not special). Conclusion: I just would not go back. I honestly left regretting that we had missed an opportunity to eat at another places that would have been more fun, more comfortable, and more delicious.
Be the first to ReplyHonestly was super underwhelmed.
Other than the fact that our hostess who seated us was super friendly and helped us right away, the service was so poor. Got seated and after maybe a few minutes we were ready to other, but it felt as if we were ignored and nobody came to help.We had to wait almost 20 minutes to order, we just got one sangria and a dividida ( half/half paella) in which the server insisted we get an appetizer because the paella could take 40 mins, we didn't want to since the paella said "can feed 2-4 people". Sangria came out quickly, and it wasn't a type of sangria we were used to. We like it more tart and sour, but this sangria was just straight liquor, no real tart fruitiness to it, pretty let down. Paella came out and this, was the blandest paella we had. Trader Joe's frozen paella had more taste than this. There wasn't even salted. Both paella's rice had 0 seasoning on it. The squid ink rice just tasted like plain congee, while the seafood other than the shrimp was tasteless. The shrimp had a decent char smokey flavor to it, but that's about it. The lechon was decent but again, no seasoning. It was just flavored by the pork drippings, but there was no real flavor profile to it. So disappointed, especially since we're dropping $70 for paella in which it barely fed the two of us when it says "feeds 2-4" Really disappointed The ambiance was alright, dim lighting and it made it feel kind of intimate but couldn't really take nice pictures unless adjusted with settings. Overall we won't be coming back here not only because service was so slow, but the paella (what they're supposedly known for?) was completely bland. At least it was edible since we were hungry but we'd rather just go elsewhere.

(4/5) Loved the energy here! From our first steps, we were very warmly welcomed by the hostess and drawn in by the live music, the bustle of the open kitchen, and the laughter of groups having a good time. The right side of the restaurant can be quite loud, but we were luckily seated in a one of the booths tucked away on the left that felt like our own cozy bubble. From a value perspective, a few of these dishes are pretty overpriced and but I think Bellota wins in ambience and consistency - usually there's always a dish or two that misses the mark, but I found the food here to be consistently good or great and not oversalted. Also kudos to the mini table lamp providing lighting for the food pics without being intrusive - my friends were relieved to be off flashlight duty and everything still felt intimate. + carne cruda / beef tartare (3.75/4): Solid, nothing in particular stands out about this iteration of beef tartare but the flavors go together nicely and it's one of the better ones I've had.+ croquetas (4/5): Will declare upfront that it is slightly egregious that each croquette costs $10 (I recently had 4 for $13 elsewhere), BUT this was one of our favorite dishes of the night and there was a generous amount of crab meat. + bravas (3.5/5): I'm just never really blown away by bravas... it always feels like buying a very expensive side of home fries (which in this case were $18... my eyes popped). I feel this way about Bellota's rendition too, but I appreciate that the potatoes weren't oversalted as they often are in Spanish tapas and that they were a well executed balance of crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The aioli was also addicting (wish we kept it for the tortilla). + tortilla (4.25/5): My friends and I were very confused by this dish until we found out that 'tortilla' can also refer to a Spanish omelette, not just the burrito wrap lol... although I couldn't taste the black truffle, this was one of the best omelettes I've ever had. Thoroughly enjoyed the melted cheese, the delicious mushroom mix and aioli, and the light, *just* barely done consistency of the omelette. Great value as well, as this plate was surprisingly massive. Will be dreaming of this at my next brunch.+ dividida paella: arros negre + lechon (4/5): Came here for the dividida!! LOVE that we can sample two paellas at once - usually it's such a massive commitment to pick the one. Both tasted great and somewhat similar due to the saffron mixed into the rice, but I lean towards the Lechon because I really enjoyed the addition of the roasted grapes (never had this in paella before!) and broccolini. Pork belly was very tender and was accompanied by some kind of chopped fruit on top (yum). The arros negre is more of your classic seafood paella combo. + mostachon (2.5/5): The waiter recommended this as the best dessert on the menu (since the baked alaska was sadly sold out for the night), but this had the taste and consistency of a roasted marshmallow that none of us were a fan of.

Dare I say, the best Spanish food in SF. Love the fact that you can order two paellas in one pan...and both of them were great. The potatoes, squid, and all of the desserts were also great. This is just an impressive restaurant operating at the top of their game. Come here for good vibes, good food, and good drinks. But don't forget your wallet... you'll definitely need that :)
Be the first to ReplyNot the best dining experience from the moment we sat down.
The hostesses were honestly very sweet but overall, this restaurant made me feel very unsettled.Sat down at the bar since we were 15 mins early for the reservation and the bartender seemed more interested in seeing our IDs than taking our order when he cut us off while we were ordering drinks. We asked how a specific drink was and the response we got was, "Well, it's rosé...?" The bartender was also seemingly much more attentive to the people right of us at the bar. Please note that the bathroom is not actually inside the restaurant, it's within the general building complex which would have been nice to be told upon sitting down. We were then seated in a pretty brightly lit area and whether it was the initial hostility or the fact that the people to the left and right table could hear one another's conversations, I felt on edge the whole time since my seat was directly across from the bartender. I didn't set any expectations as far as food goes but I will say the beef tartare was delicious. We ordered the seafood paella and the large shrimps cover most of the plate to hide the lack of other seafood within the platter. Would not recommend or come back, I really wish this experience was a lot better considering the t

Had a nice dinner here, service was great and many menu items looked delicious, but what we ordered did not really work well for me. Pulpo - octopus was cooked well, the dish was tasty, but you only get 4 small pieces of octopus, which I expected more for the price. Croquetas - interior was pure goo, so it was difficult to find the crab outside the pinch they add on top. I would have liked a bit for structure/textureSeafood paella - the seafood is all delicious and cooked beautifully. However I felt that the rice itself lacked some flavor. I'm pretty sensitive to salt, but I even found the rice to be under seasoned. Overall, not sure I would return considering what we got for the price, but could be what I ordered.

We came for a research dinner while in SF, and had a reservation for 16! The restaurant was spacious and had a live band playing music, creating a nice fun ambiance. We had a prefix menu that had lots of different options. The tapas were all so delicious. As always, you can't go wrong with bravas and croqueta. Come with sauce that adds lots of flavors. The gambas (shrimp) had a slight kick to it and was served with bread to soak up all the juice! I am not usually a beef person but the chuleton was cooked to perfection and so tender and delicious. This is a must-have! The paellas came in a massive serving size and come with lots of add-ins. Lastly, we had dessert. The churros were so soft and fluffy, very different from most churros I've had - even in Barcelona. Though pricey, if you want a nice night out, this is the place to try!

Let me begin with saying that the service is wonderful and the wait staff is great. I am a huge fan of paella and had it in many places over the years. I love especially seafood paella. We've had Arros Negre here and it was the worst I've ever had. Total waste of shrimp and rice. I absolutely understand what they were going for with the dish, but totally missed the mark. Albondiga was good. I never complain about money spent in good restaurants and on good food, but this was a total waste. Which is a pity because the restaurant is very convenient to where I live and was hoping to go there often.
Be the first to ReplyHorrific place.
Mike, the "wine director" knows as much about wine as an incompetent bimbo stuck changing tires on the freeway. Not only that, his hospitality skills need to go to the toilet area of the restaurant where he will be more useful. Latin waiter, useless. What a joke.
