Bennelong Sydney Reviews
Excellent Venue and Food
Excellent view and excellent food. In fact, it was one of the best restaurants we’d dined in on the trip to Australia. Sommelier was extremely friendly and attentive; can’t say the same about other servers. In fact, we never figured out who was supposed to take care of us. They kept disappearing after having introduced themselves.
Great experience
We enjoyed a spectacular drinks and dessert at Bennelong. It is a treasure. Located beneath the Sydney Opera House with incredible views and amazing service.
Truly an incredible experience.
Great staff, great views, great architecture, and great food! All of the entree's were delicious (my table got one of each). The mains were great- I'm not the largest fan of duck so it was a little chewy for my tastes but I got the fillet and it was scrumptious! The potatoes they were on were a delight as well. The pavlova stole the show for dessert. Wonderful and one of a kind time!
Not what I expected from The Bennelong
We phoned to book a window table the time and day were irrelevant, all we wanted was a window table for our 36th wedding Anniversary and while that preference would be added to our booking, we were told that seating was allocated on the day and there was no guarantee that we would get a window table. Even when we advised that our travel time down to Sydney was 3 hours we were still told seating is arranged on the day at the time of the booking and we had no way of knowing our seating allocation until we arrived. Not what I expect from the Bennelong so now we are not driving 3 hours to pay hundreds of dollars at a table we don't want to be at. Who do we have to know to get a fair shot at a window table? We were flexible, they are not
Worth the visit
This is an great restaurant in an exceptional setting! The menu has a lot to offer and is uniquely presented. I personally enjoyed the mud crab, raviolo, and pavlova (though I believe the menu seasonally changes). The prices are high, but in my opinion, they are worth it for a good meal in a stunning location. They also have a very extensive wine list and attentive service. Overall, a nice evening out!
World Class view, food and service
Went on the 23rd of August. The service from beginning to end was amazing. The staff were genuine, sincere and very friendly. The location and interior of the restaurant was sublime!!!! The food was absolutely delicious. Beautifully set on the plate and unique flavours . There was enough choice for our table with varying ages. We felt comfortable yet were treated with friendly first class service. What an experience we will never forget xxx
Just Beautiful
Popped in the opera house to get out of the rain and wandered into the restaurant. Fine foods at every level. Despite not having a booking we were offered a 5 course tasting menu, a lunch time 2 course menu inc of sparkling wine, a la’carte menu or bar snacks. We opted for the 2 course lunch menu. Food was top quality and absolutely delicious. Service was impeccable. We sat looking out at Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge. A very unexpected and pleasant afternoon.
An absolute highlight of our trip to Sydney - brilliant food, great location, fabulous serviceand friendly staff
Wowser. We really enjoyed our dinner at Bennelong. As locations go, being inside the Sydney Opera House complex with views across the bay to the Sydney Harbour Bridge is probably up there with some of the best in the world. The menu is centred around Australian food and wine, which is in understandable given the quality of ingredients on offer. We went for the three course menu which offered food such as crab, pork belly or beetroot salad to start; cod, duck, vegetable tart or wagyu brisket for main; and pavlova (which has to be seen to be believed!), granita or chocolate velvet for dessert (not exclusive and my descriptions DO NOT do the food justice!) The service was attentive but friendly and relaxed, perfect for teens that don't like too much fuss but do like to be listened to and to be able to ask questions. Chiara was our waiter for the evening - she was great and the boys really appreciated the time she gave them. She was friendly and knowledgeable and always seemed to be there when needed but was never intrusive or too much. Jonathan was our sommelier and produced some exceptionally good Australian wines which paired wonderfully with the food we were eating, despite its variety of ingredients and flavours. The restaurant is located within the Opera House and perfectly suited to pre- or post-show meals. It was a real pleasure to eat there and thanks to all the staff for making us feel so relaxed.
Dinner 3 course menu
What an exquisite experience. Had the Australian Marron to start, followed by the Maremma Duck and the Chocolate Velvet dessert to finish. Everything cooked to perfection. My waiter Maxime was very attentive.
Don't look at the price, and book this restaurant
Don't look at the price, and book this restaurant immediately. The food, the decor, the ambiance, the service, the drinks, literally everything here is tip top of the line. The only downside is you will be walking out of here a lot more poor than when you came in. However, I think it is totally worth it. Especially if you're from the USA like me, how many times are you really going to come back here? The $30.80 espresso martini was perfect. We loved the beet salad, pork, and the fish, and the potatoes. There wasn't a bad item that we ordered here. Most importantly the view and service can't be beat. You also get a free glass of champagne with your lunch. I booked our reservation for noon right when the restaurant opened and our guided tour of the opera house ended. This way we were the first people into the restaurant and got a window seat. I had a great time here and hope to be back.
Don’t miss this one.
We were in Australia for 16 days and this was the best food during the trip. The atmosphere is fabulous with amazing views of the Sydney harbor. The service is excellent and the wait staff is extremely sensitive to timing if you are attending a performance, Everything about your experience is first class from the moment you enter until you leave.
Average
Great location, but average dining experience that is not fine dining. Very underwhelming for what you pay for. Didn't appreciate being charged $13 for water. Wouldn't rush back.
Traveling to Sydney has been a bucket list item for a long
Traveling to Sydney has been a bucket list item for a long time. Advice from friends told us that dinner at Bennelong was a must. And it did not disappoint. We were able to get a reservation prior to seeing the opera that night (Cinderella) and had lovely seats by the window. All three courses were delicious and the wine pairing was perfect. The service by Tibirius (apologies if misspelled) was fantastic and Zahra knocked it out of the park with the wine recommendation. We loved chatting with her throughout our meal--she's a gem. A perfectly timed meal to allow us to make the curtain call. See you next time!
They should change the name from Bennelong to Bennaverylong
They should change the name from Bennelong to Bennaverylong ... time for our damn food. This place is trying to be a fine dining Michelin establishment and the staff just doesn't get it. The chef should realize his dream will never materialize. Just have fun guys, relax and entertain people.
Full disclosure, it is pricey.
But . . . Location + food + service makes it all worth while. This is a great special occasion treat and did not disappoint for our anniversary celebration. Lovely. The sommelier was helpful and gently guided us into some great wine. Next time I am in Sydney, I am going back!!
Wow, Wow, WOW! What a lovely welcome we received when
Wow, Wow, WOW! What a lovely welcome we received when checking in for our reservation! We were a bit early and opted to take time for a beverage in the upper bar. The wait staff was welcoming and very polished. I opted for a Cloud of Passion: a strawberry and coconut infused vodka with passion fruit. The bar is upstairs and gives a Beautiful view of the restaurant below and looks out the harbor. Amazing views! When we were seated at our table for our meal, I was delighted with our window seats looking out over the skyline and harbor. The inside of the restaurant is a stunning display of architectural genius. I dined on yabbies (crawfish to us Americans), kurobuta pork and for dessert enjoyed a delicious crème caramel vs Mille-Feuille. What a sensation for my tastebuds! The sommelier gave us wonderful direction which guided us to a perfect wine paring Reservations are essential.
Wonderful experience
Delicious food we all really enjoyed. Thank you for your service and hospitality! We came back multiple times during our travels after our hotel recommendations
Bennelong, come along ….
Stunning meal in a stunning location particularly because Vivid was on and the city looked fabulous.Emrys our server was outstanding, knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. Deserves a huge commendation. Dishes were a sight to behold and delicious but this is a special occasion restaurant as it’s a tad expensive. We had a great night.
I was not over enthused
I was at the Bennelong last night for dinner. Its been 2 years since I was last there. Honestly, while the experience of seeing the lights from the bridge and harbour was magnificent I was too thrilled about the food at all. The service was great, The sommelier poured and left and for a $550 meal with a beer wine and some soft drink it was not up to parr at all. Not sure what is going on here, maybe it was the meals I chose but my friend thought the same, very very average. I wont be coming back in a hurry but I wont not go either..may just need to do select different meals perhaps
Nothing grand, over the top cost but love our server “worldly Fabio”. He made it up for the mishap booking.
The food was “meh” considering the cost. But our server “Fabio” was amazing, professional and super helpful. Go somewhere for fine dinning.
Aurorae Vivid
My wife , daughter and I took advantage of the Vivid special at Bennelong , Cocktail and snacks. Our welcome was very friendly , engaging and warm.We enjoyed a cocktail and two beautiful snacks. The service was great, so friendly. The views were amazing of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House interior all the while the Vivid light show was taking place outside. We ate out at Quay recently, Mr Gilmore’s other restaurant and enjoyed both experiences.
Nice food, not worth the price and a little pompous
Had the $150 counter 2-course meal. Found the food very good but the staff and the atmosphere a little ‘stuffy’. Not naturally classy, a little forced. Cool venue but the counter doesn’t have much of a view (great for people watching the photos on the steps though LOL)!
Good food + Opera House + views -- what's not to love?
I wanted to take my partner somewhere special for dinner. A special location, special building and a special restaurant noted for good food and service. Bennelong ticked all those boxes on the night we visited. I booked several weeks in advance and on the appointed evening, we enjoyed the walk from the hotel to the Sydney Opera House and into the restaurant. That was really the appetiser for me -- after visiting Sydney many times, I had never gone inside the building. Right away the very energetic, if slightly overworked, maître d' got us settled into our seat near the window with lovely views of Circular Quay and the city. Service was friendly and efficient throughout the sitting and there was no rush to push us out the door once all the food had been served (it was a Tuesday night after all). Food was excellent, nicely presented, if a tiny bit pricey for what you got. But overall, you come to Bennelong as much for the venue as the food. And we really enjoyed the experience. Would I come back? Yes, I think I would.
Very disappointed. Food and service standards have dropped
So very disappointed with our experience. I have eaten here many times and last Friday was a bit of a disaster! Service was not at its usual standards. Food was very bland and did not meet expectation. Mistakes were made through out the night by staff…… became a little comical in the end. For $190 per person, I would like a table cloth too!!!! Won’t be back in a hurry.
Wow wow wow
A group of close friends and I had lunch at Bennelong yesterday and it was truly an amazing experience. We had a newborn with us as well and they made us feel so so welcomed. From as soon as we entered, it was clear the service was what was going to stand out. After not being allowed to dine at an affiliated restaurant due to a no children < 7 yr policy, I am delighted to have been able to dine here. I pretty much doubt the other restaurant would have been better. The food was simply exceptional, as I guess you would except from a 2 hatted restaurant- the scallops, duck and chocolate crackle were stand out dishes. The atmosphere and view are incredible. But what made this an experience that stands out from the rest is the service. I dine out a lot and genuinely don’t think I have had better service than what we had here. From the marvellous welcome from the maître d’, to our personal waiter, to the sommelier, to the staff serving food and to a staff member who, I am unsure what their role was, but kept coming over to check on our newborn, I could not have imagined a better dining experience for our special occasion. Particular shout out to the maître d’- such a huge asset to the restaurant and is one of the reasons we will be back. If you want a truly special experience, book here.
A memorable dining experience
I have been wanting to come in for a long time and managed to walk in yesterday. The experience I had well and truly exceeded my expectations. I opted for the three-course menu because I wanted dessert as well. At $190, given the restaurants reputation and location I thought this was fair. What I didn’t realise was that this also included complimentary bread (and was offered a second serve) and two sides with my main. Very excellent value! Great range in wine pricing as well. I was looked after Ashani who was wonderful and had excellent knowledge of the menu. It was a busy service and was attentive throughout my visit. The level of detail extended to cleaning my table during each visit and the Sommelier would always wipe the bottle so it didn’t drip on the table. Only a few small examples but this is the difference between a regular dining experience and fine dining experience. All staff were friendly and passionate. Each course, was like a beautiful piece of art. This was not playing but culinary excellence. Using high quality produce each dish was delicious and the portion sizes were just right. The sides were a great addition to the meal. My Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir were beautiful and both unique from wines I have had before. While I told myself, this would be a once off occasion before my visit, however after the experience I had yesterday I would love to come back. Highly recommend visiting, even not for an occasion.
This was our best meal by far in Sydney.
We took the pre-fix meal prior to seeing a play at the Opera House. The views are amazing, and a big part of the experience of dining here. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We started with an infused orange vodka drink that was delicious. The crayfish appetizer was small in size but was cooked perfectly and full of flavors. The John Dory was a light white fish that was filling but didn't over power with fish taste. Dessert of chocolate crackle with a cappuccino capped off a perfect dinner. Pricey but worth it for the views, ambience and great food.
Since there are only 5 stars I will give them that.
Had a wonderful Sunday Jazz lunch. Food, atmosphere, service, drinks, music all top notch. To top it off you are in the Sydney Opera House. Best. Experience. Ever.
I believe I may have found my favorite restaurant in Sydney
I believe I may have found my favorite restaurant in Sydney - an immaculate blend of superb service; great flavors; and stunning views. I visited for a solo dinner which did require a phone call ahead of time versus the website. One small issue here - apparently the person taking my reservation didn't denote correctly that I was solo when I arrived. However, the manager, also named John, was able to take care of it quickly and easily. John was absolutely a superstar and was so impressed with how professional he was and personable amidst all the hustle and bustle of the night. I was seated at the bar area at the edge, overlooking a lot of the restaurant and the gorgeous, gorgeous views looking out at the pier. The design of the restaurant is striking and magnificent. It's one of the most memorable restaurants I've been to just from a visual perspective. Here's what I ordered: *Cool, Calm & Collected: A really delicious brandy/rum drink that was a play on bee's knees. Loved the presentation which came with a honeycomb cracker and a wee bit of liquid nitrogen which made the whole cocktail look so neat. Counter Prie Fixe Menu: *Smoked Pig Jowl: Such a gorgeous presentation of noodles. The dish was a nice appetizer and so packed full of flavor. Loved the ivvid notes of black garlic and sesame that weren't overpowering at all. *Maremma pasture raised duck: Also a gorgeous presentation. Loved the duck itself - wonderfully cocked to perfection with a crispy skin. The duck sausage was a bit overpowering in contrast, but I think when all of it is mixed together, it comes together quite well. The entree also came with potatoes and green beans. These were alright. Dessert: *I ended up pushing thru to get the final dessert - the Pavlova. Again, another gorgeously presented dessert that is made to reflect the Sydney Opera House itself. I didn't like the rice crackers as much but the rest of the baked meringue was terrific. I got to the restaurant by using the elevator and looking for signage which were plentiful! Thanks to the server, Valerie, and John for being fantastic. Super, super memorable all the way through and just a terrific way to end the night and cap off the Sydney trip.
Great experience.
Fabulous setting. Superb food and wine. Generally decent service.
