Got a 5pm reso and honestly was great since it wasn't too
Got a 5pm reso and honestly was great since it wasn't too too busy! Inside was so nice, cozy!Egg special appetizer was delish, lots of textures going on with the crispy chicken skin, capers, sauce and boiled egg (also I just love eggs so maybe I'm biased). Beef tartare was a bit salty, not the best I've had but still solid. I don't really know if I loved the toast choice. Really enjoyed the carrots and lentils, super flavourful. Chicken was moist and good, just not mind-blowing. Half and half fries/wedges were a good choice, fries were better tho lol. Ice cream was refreshing, not sure how I feel about the olive oil. Service was amazing throughout and never felt rushed. Overall, apps over the main!
Incredibly overrated spot.
The rotisserie chicken was nearly undercooked and pink in parts with two mini slider buns and one side of French fries. For a family they gave us 2 buns and charged extra for more buns. The service was terrible and it took over an hour to get the whole chicken. We also ordered himachi which was fishy and the broccoli that had slices of cheese on top. Absolutely shocked this place is popular. What an absolute rip off and disappointment.

3.5/5 Food: We ordered the half chicken, which was a bit dry and mid. The sides were great, very flavourful (though the fries could be a bit better, but the aioli made up for it). We also ordered a blue butterfly pea mocktail which I found delicious! The dessert was fantastic, sweet vanilla ice cream mixed with a more tart berry sorbet, the best thing out of the entire meal. Service: Staff were kind and we got a sparkler in our dessert - super cute. Ambiance: Vibes were good - very small space but fun. The tables are veryyy closer together.
Finally came around to booking a reservation for this spot
Finally came around to booking a reservation for this spot as I have been wanting to come here for so long. I have a friend who used to be a chef here, so her constantly posting beautiful food always compelled me to come here, plus ive heard only great things. Coming as a solo diner, the only option for seating was at a the bar - typically but ugh I just want a normal seat at a table sometimes. But i completely understand, especially with how busy they get. I requested that I be sat at the end of the bar because I did NOT want to be in between parties, which they did comply with my request. My only gripe is the constant moving around of the servers is a little distracting, but again I understand the hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant (maybe just don't have that seat as an option?). Anyway, I had studied the menu like a test and I knew what I wanted to order. I started with the Winter Wedge salad which had a blue cheese dressing, crispy onions, and pickled onions. I am scared of blue cheese but it basically tasted like a caesar salad. It was HEAVY on the dressing tho, I think they couldve put maybe half of the amount of dressing. The salad came out IMMEDIATELY after I ordered it, which was fine (but I wanted to eat it with my main meal, which came out about 30 min after the salad). I also ordered a mushroom dish which I probably would not order again, since it was priced at $22 and only took me 6 bites to finish. While im sure the ingredients are high quality and locally sources, I cannot justify the price personally. It was still good though! The main event of the meal was the chicken dinner. They offer a half portion and a full chicken, but my awesome waitress said they can do a quarter chicken dinner which was great since I had ordered other dishes to try. My main meal consisted of a quarter chicken, dark meat, with a small portion of fries, a sesame bun, 2 pickle spears, coleslaw, and a small cup of gravy. This was very comforting and the chicken was beautifully cooked. You can taste the uniqueness in the gravy, and eating it in the bun was a fun idea. The fries are nice and thick cut, perfect with a side of ketchup or dipping in the gravy. Some might say an elevated swiss chalet, which I could agree with but obviously this spot is waaaay better. The finale of the meal, and arguably the best part, was the season soft serve. This time it was a twist of Vanilla soft serve with an apple cinnamon cardamom sorbet and a crumble added on top. it was DIVINE, like eating a spiced apple pie. it was an excellent smooth texture, and again they had a half portion for solo diners like me! Overall, definitely happy with my experience and I learned a few things on what to order. I would love to come back and try some other main dishes they offer and experience that soft serve again!
This is the SPOT! I don't know if there is anything I
This is the SPOT! I don't know if there is anything I could list that would be a percentage of a point deduction at this place. The constantly rotating menu keeps things fresh while holding every new dish to the highest standards. While they have several main stay dishes, I have not been able to convince myself to order anything but the rotisserie chicken as my main. I have not had better chicken. Full stop. That's it. It can be difficult to find a table, so make sure to reserve well in advance, but it's worth the wait. The staff is highly knowledgeable and have always been warm and welcoming. The vibe is cozy and slightly rustic. Just an all around winner.
To start we got the Mushroom toast (5/5 - I love mushrooms)
To start we got the Mushroom toast (5/5 - I love mushrooms) and the leeks (5/5 - leeks in an olive oil and Klamata olive sauce and topped with feta). In my opinion the appetizers stole the show. They were creative, very tasty, and surprisingly filling. We also got a half chicken to share (3.5/5). We got the half fries, half wedges. The carbs were good but dry - they desperately needed some sauce and they did bring out some aioli after we asked. The chicken was good - the gravy was really good, but overall the whole dish felt dry. We finished our meal with the ice cream which was phenomenal (6/5). They rotate the flavour and it's a mix of soft serve and sorbet. It was excellent. The restrooms are a flight of stair down (in case mobility is an issue) and it's a very tight restaurant. I would recommend making reservations as they are always busy.
Taverne Bernhardts located along Dovercourt near Foxley
Taverne Bernhardts located along Dovercourt near Foxley serves up golden rotisserie chicken and seasonal Ontario produce in a relaxed and chill environment. They also have a moderately big wine list and small cocktail list as well where you likely find some pretty unique wines to try. The restaurant is hidden away from the busy Ossington Strip in a quiet residential area where it's sister restaurant, Vilda's, is just across the street. The eatery seats around 30 customers so reservations are recommended (yes...even on a Monday night!). Washrooms are not accessible as you have to navigate a set of stairs where they are found in the basement. We dined at Taverne Bernhards on an early Monday night. I did make reservations ahead of time just in case. As we entered we were promptly greeted and shown to our table. There were already a few parties enjoying their food. Service was friendly and we never felt rushed during our time there. Food wise, we got Bernhardts classics. A small greenie, sunflower, and Hercule de Charleroix salad ($15) and half of the White Rock rotisserie chicken ($39). Chicken comes with a choice of fries or potatoes (we chose fries!), gravy, coleslaw, buns, and pickles. Food came at a reasonable time and everything looked great. The rotisserie chicken was cooked perfectly and the gravy was delicious. The side of fries were a big portion and we couldn't even finish them. The greenie salad was delicious - tart, refreshing, and light, a perfect balance to the chicken and fries we had. For dessert we obviously had to order the coupe glacee which is a soft serve twist that changes from time to time. I've had Vilda's soft serve many many times during the summers so I knew getting the soft serve at Bernhardts was a must. This time, it was a coconut ice cream and citrus sorbet swirl with coconut toasties. What a beautiful combination - even though my partner and I shared the soft serve I secretly could have eaten one serving on my own. Overall, a solid place for rotisserie chicken done well in the city. The salad as well as soft serve is not to be missed as well.
Made a reservation pretty much day of and got seated right
Made a reservation pretty much day of and got seated right away. The staff were friendly and made great suggestions. We got the half chicken (which only comes with one bun), the zucchini, and beets which were an off menu special. The beets were amazing, so flavorful. The zucchini was good but missing something. Still a solid choice. The chicken was a little overcooked but overall, a great meal and just the right portion for 2 adults.

I have parked on this street several times and walked by this place without paying much attention. I knew Bernhardt's is around here somewhere but most of the attention goes the pizza spot nearby which has lines which are now hour+ long from what I heard. Never mind after not being able to make it here on the past two attempts we finally arrived here. While the dinning area in the patio and front seems nice the seating in the back is quite bad IMO. We are talking dark and narrow alleys you have trek to get to a dinning area (lighting level doesn't improve here BTW) and the seating is very uncomfortable if you see with a back to the wall. We are not even talking a straight back here rather one has be slightly hunched over to even sit. I understand its an old house conversion to a restaurant but still not impressed at the rather uncomfortable seating if not up front. We ordered the beet salad with labneh and whole chicken with half and half of fries and potato wedges. The wine list is decent on a cursory look but being on the only person having a drink I found there selection of beers so limiting that stuck to sparkling water. The food here is where they make up for the earlier follies. The salad was good and nice mix of tart and sweet and labneh balancing out the rest. Good start. The bird is not overly large (think smaller than the Costco version : ) Cooked well (read not overcooked) nice crisp on the skin and not salty which is what I have found elsewhere .The sides are all decent. I didn't try the pickle and found the slaw OK. The gravy again isn't salty or overtly rich which is just fine for chicken. I saw some other items that are enticing like the lobster toast. Hanger steak as well could be good. One can combine the two to make a surf & turf. We were full otherwise would have tried the desserts. I will revisit especially if I get seating at front.

I must say this was one of the best dinners I've had in a long time. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was laid back and comfortable. We had the cheddar mixed green salad, the carrots, the cod fritters and the chicken dinner. The only complaint I have was the side portions for the chicken dinner. It should be enough to feed 4 people. The sides of slaw was literally only 2 tiny paper cups that you would use to put ketchup in at a fast food restaurant and the smallest side of fries. For the price of that dinner the sides were to small . Other than that the food tasted excellent . I would def go back. Oh I forgot to mention the best pickles I have ever had

Located off the beaten track in an refurbished home to the services personal and personable. The food is interesting and tasty.
Went for dinner.
The space is a little cramped in the back room but I like the vibes. The house is cozy. The menu is very small but our server was very knowledgeable and walked us through each dish. There were a few featured items but we stuck to the main menu. We shared a full chicken and 3 other dishes. Everything was good. He the portions aren't too big. The Brussels sprouts were great! We ended sharing the 2 desserts. I wasn't a big fan of the chocolate cake but the ice cream was amazing!!! Oh and they don't have straws lol.
Recommended by a friend, we came here for a date night.
We made reservations ahead of time and walked down a quiet residential street to find this restaurant. We had our meal in one of their many eclectically decorated rooms. I would have preferred a bit more lighting in our area as the other two dining areas had more lights and windows but it was definitely an ambiance. We had a freshwater bass crudo as an appetizer and shared half a chicken platter with some seasonal vegetables. The chicken was seasoned well and juicy and it was just a nice hearty meal. We had some cocktails as well which were both well made. The dessert was a cranberry and spiced vanilla soft serve with oatmeal crumble and candied orange peel. Easily the best ice cream I've had in a while. Their service was also very prompt and our waitress was very helpful in helping us decide what to get and made sure our dishes came in the right order.
I'm incredibly disappointed to be giving a 2-star review
I'm incredibly disappointed to be giving a 2-star review because I've only heard great things about Bernhardts. I almost never write reviews but our service was so off-putting that I cannot help but express it. To be fair - the food was delicious and beautiful, the ambiance was cozy and inviting - I thank them for this. It was the unbelievably RUDE service that left a bad taste in our mouths which as a result, turned us off the entire experience. 5 of my girlfriends and I had a late night reservation at 9:30pm on a Saturday night. Immediately, our host was hostile and clearly not happy to see us for some reason. We were on time. She then brought us to our table. She must've accidentally bumped my friend as she was rushingly setting some things down at the table and did NOT even say sorry, just walked away! Then we were greeted by our server. At first, she seemed fine, normal, not really friendly but did offer some great recommendations. Dinner came out in a timely manner and everything was delicious. After dessert, we wanted to end our evening with a round of lemon drop shots. Our server mentioned she'd ask her bartender who may have closed the bar. This was odd because she didn't give us a heads up. She came back and told us that the bartender did close the bar, to which I simply replied, "oh! I didn't realize the bar was closed since we didn't get a last call." My comment, which was absolutely fair, ticked her off. At that point, they didn't allow us to order lemon drop shots but rather could pour us a round of tequila shots, evidently because this requires less prepartion. Our tequila shots didn't come with lemons so we asked for some. Again, she gave us a hard time about it but ultimately brought us lemons. When it came to paying our bills, her demeanor was colder than ever. She finished the last payment, ripped the receipt from the machine and set down the receipt on the table so fast and so aggressively and just walked away - didn't say thank you or goodbye. No one said bye to us as we were leaving. You might be thinking - 6 women, last reso slot, rowdy Saturday night, etc etc. We were punctual and polite guests through and through. We spent money - wine, cocktails, apps, entrees, desserts, etc. We all tipped well, despite the service. We did not camp out, in fact, there were still a number of guests when we left. It's also worth mentioning that the 6 of us have all worked in the industry for over 10 years each, both in service and managerial roles, so we understand and respect the etiquette. What we don't understand is what we did wrong to deserve such a hostile experience. I'm not sure I'll be back.
Delicious roast chicken and sides in a cozy, comfortable
Delicious roast chicken and sides in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Like a very elevated Swiss Chalet, in a good way. The chicken, potatoes, and roasted delicata squash in particular were standouts!
Second time coming with my girlfriends and had another
Second time coming with my girlfriends and had another superb meal. Order the greener salad - always a must! One of the best salads I've eaten dining out. The menu changes seasonally. This time around we had the beans, peppers and burrata and corn to start. For the main we shared the lamb. Couldn't make up our minds for dessert and shared both. Enjoyed a mineral white wine during dinner, but started the evening with a slushy cocktail. Highly recommend - your meal will always be delicious no matter what you end up choosing. However if you're stuck, the staff is super helpful and you can tell they really enjoy the food and drinks Bernhardt offers - they will describe the food in the most delectable way possible, and this is just using words, wait until you taste it. The staff also know when to swiftly come in to top up your glass before you realize your glass was half empty.
Please do not go to this restaurant!! I will explain.
This restaurant absolutely reeks of the most delicious chicken and fries you've ever had. Like a white, windowless van with the promise of puppies, you will be lured into this cozy historic looking house-turned-restaurant on an idyllic Toronto street. The decor oozes comfort and charm, matched only by the personable and genuine staff. Ok I am gatekeeping because it's hard enough to get a reservation here on any given day! Please do visit Bernhardt's, the food is fabulous. It's elevated comfort food that will taste familiar yet new at the same time. The chicken is worth going for alone but the appetizer squash and shishito peppers were just as stunning. Every detail including the sauces and garnishes were thoughtful and balanced. I especially loved the delicata squash dish, absolutely delicious and perfect for the fall weather. Now the chicken is what you come here for, moist, juicy, seasoned well, this is not the Swiss chalet you're used to. Large succulent pieces piled onto a dish with refreshing coleslaw and pickles, perfect for cutting through the richness of the chicken and potatoes and the potatoes themselves are showstoppers. We were given a choice between fries or potatoes and they give you the option to choose both which of course we did. The potatoes come with this incredible aioli as well as verde sauce which i would dip anything in. The fries were piping hot and crispy as can be. Also seasoned beautifully. In addition this meal came with a nice toasty sesame bun and a generous side of gravy, which again, I would drink if socially acceptable. Portions are quite generous. We ordered the half chicken and it was enough for two large eaters if you order an app or two which I recommend. The fries were a huge portions but I do think it might be the same portion if you order the large chicken meal. Everything else seems doubled in the large order. Service, while not very prompt, was genuine and friendly. They were happy to explain items on the menu, a lot of French influence so while this feels like a neighborhood pub, the food is upscale. Again the restaurant ambiance is fabulous, perfect for dates, a family dinner, getting together with friends, any occasion really. It's warm and cozy. The front patio is perfect for people watching and enjoying the weather. I saw they had some heaters going also so it was very comfortable. It's a small fairly intimate place so if you don't like sitting near other people you may have a problem but I didn't mind at all. Can't wait to come back, I'm already craving that chicken again!!
Taverne Bernhardts was the last French bistro we hit during
Taverne Bernhardts was the last French bistro we hit during our trip. It was right up there with the other two we went to. Their signature dish is rotisserie chicken, and it is to die for. In addition to the 1/2 rotisserie chicken, we started with a couple of apps: Eggplant & shrimp. Both apps had unique tastes that wet our tastebuds for the main event. The chicken was sublime. It was moist (even the breast), expertly seasoned, and paired well w/ the half fries/half potatoes and gravy. Even the hamburger style bun & pickle worked with the dish. Regarding the ambiance, its like someone's house w/ a small bar. The seats are tight, but its not too loud. Our dark haired waitress (name wasn't on the receipt), was excellent. She was super nice, very helpful w/ the menu and attentive. Our meal here was in the top 3 during our trip. The chicken lives up to the hype, the service is fantastic, and the ambiance is lively, but homey.
Such a hidden gem.
The first time I saw this place the people sitting at the restaurant called out to me and told me that I have to try it. I am so glad they did. It was so unique, amazing quality and the service was so friendly. It's a shareable place so you get to try everything with your party which I love. It reminded me of the chicken I had in Lisbon. The ingredients are fresh, the patio is so cute and service was so friendly and welcoming. Please go here, you won't regret it.
