Soul(less) Food
Worst food I've had since I moved here. I had pork chop (not chops), rice, and cabbage. The pork chop was fried too hard and lacked seasoning. The rice was bland and the only gravy they had came from the baked chicken which was watery and also lacked seasoning. Finally, the cabbage...it tasted like it was cut up and thrown into water, Aldo lacked seasoning. For this to be labeled a soul food restaurant, they lacked Soul! Best thing about this restaurant is the price.

The best home cooking ever! I love the fried pork chops get them all the time and the red rice with cabbage and cornbread! I could eat there every day!
Be the first to ReplyThis place was awful.
We walked in to no greeting or menus available. On-line it states that there was minimal seating but there was NO seating and the place was dirty. There were industrial fans on a table stacked near the front with a lot of other boxes and stuff. No one said hello or welcome. We were just standing there for 10 minutes while the locals waited on those to-go boxes with lima beans and rice. The chicken was not on display. After never being acknowledged, we just left. Totally bizarre experience. I will never go back. We went to Rodney Scott's BBQ and it was amazing!

Bertha’s was on our “Must Go” Charleston vacation list. I would like to start off by saying, the fried chicken was phenomenal! We also tried a variety of sides. The okra soup (which had a great write-up displayed on the wall) tasted like doctored canned tomato soup, and the macaroni and cheese was dreadful (mushy macaroni with curdled cheese). The red rice was good but the sausage in it was very dry. The corn bread and candied yams were very good. I probably would go back only for the fried chicken, which was one of the best I’ve had. If you eat here, I recommend bringing your own utensils, as plastic (provided) doesn’t cut it.

Well this place has been highly recommended, and has even won a James Beard award so I felt this was a must on my trip to Charleston. The location was very small, with very limited dining space upstairs to eat so most people get their food to go. Regardless the chicken was delicious whether your eating there or taking it with you. The sides were just okay, nothing really impressive, and the same went for the service. Would I recommend it? Well, I probably wouldn’t stop there again personally, but the food isn’t bad at all. I just think it’s one of those places you go to just to say you went there if your from out of town. The locals seem to love it however.

Couldn’t wait to try this place and it was worth the wait. Creamy mac n’ cheese, crispy fried chicken, smothered pork chops and tasty collard greens and string beans are a must. Enjoy the chicken gizzards and necks. The okra stew was fresh but a little too sweet for me. Corn bread adds a nice touch to the meal. Warm and hospitable! A must when visiting Charleston. Very affordable too!

Be the first to ReplyGood basic soul food, good prices, great service
Masks required, they will provide if you don't have one. Good food, menu changes daily. The pork chop sandwich was delish. Expect a line, they stay busy.

We came on a Friday at 3pm and there was a line almost out the door. This place is very popular with the locals and with good reason. The food is amazing and very reasonably priced.
We had the fried chicken and chose some of their most popular sides - their award winning okra soup, lima beans, candied yams and chicken and rice. A piece of cornbread was included in our meal. The food was pre-prepared and displayed at the counter. We couldn't see any menus there, but you just picked what you wanted and they would package it up for you.
The fried chicken looked and tasted amazing. The piece included both the leg and thigh and the breading was very crispy and flavourful. The meat was succulent and juicy and it was cooked perfectly. The candied yams came in a sweet syrup and was tender and delicious. The other side sides were also very nice.
You can eat there in either the upstairs or the outside area or you can take away. There is parking on site and cars were coming and going with happy customers the whole time we were there. You can pay by cash or card and there's no extra charge for paying by card. They have good Covid precautions with masks and hand sanitizer.
This soul food restaurant has been an institution in the area since the 1970s. The original owner Bertha passed on in 2007 but her legacy lives on in this popular restaurant.
Excellent is an understatement!
The price was extremely reasonable and only wish we were locals to know all that Bertha's Kitchen had to serve. We kept seeing the woman with the Blessed shirt go to the back and had something but we did not know what. But what we are sure of is that it was probably very good for eating.

Take a trip out to Bertha's. You will NOT be disappointed! Fried chicken was straight out of the oil and cooked to perfection. Sides were excellent as well. Definitely a must

One of my favorite restaurants in Charleston. Great service and phenomenal food. Everything is absolutely delicious. Authentic soul food and some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. Must try.

This place, OMG!!! Delicious home-cooked soul food that some of us were blessed to have as a kid, made by grandma, mama or big mama! Do not let the area or exterior turn you off, you will not be disappointed. We could immediately smell the food once we stepped out of our car! Everyone was nice, helpful and service was on point. This is a must-have place while in Charleston, family history here as well. Enjoy!

This place is a tiny "hole in the wall" spot that came up in my research before our visit. Well on the very last day of the trip we stopped in before heading home. If we had found this the 1st day, we would have eaten here everyday. The $5 lunch special was really 2 meals worth. That Lima Bean plate was nothing but the truth. The cornbread and tea/lemonade mix....OOOMMMMGGG! This place, yes has a James Beard Award and rightly so. If I ever go back to Charleston, it will surely be on my list of places to eat. Good low country cooking

When you get tired of the East Bay upscale, touristy restaurants, head to Bertha's for real low country cooking --- fried chicken and fish, corn bread, mac & cheese, corn, greens, sweet tea. Bertha's gets one of my few "Excellent" ratings, because they are authentic - nothing fancy, rather "honest" ingredients. The ambience deserves a visit from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
Be the first to ReplyYum!
We ordered the pork chop, fried whiting, yams, Mac and cheese, cornbread, and red rice with sweet tea. EVERYTHING was delicious! The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was very clean. We highly recommend this restaurant! A must if you come to Charleston!
