Mostly Deserving
As a Chinese food aficionado with disposable income, what could be better than a Michelin-rated Shanghainese restaurant? In addition to food quality, Michelin rates restaurants on ambience, service, decor, etc., features often lacking in Chinese restaurants. Indeed Bistro Na fits most Michelin criteria. The decor was understated, but beautiful. Nothing was over the top - 1 star. The waitstaff was friendly and engaging. Only bilingual speakers were permitted to greet guests, although we did encounter staff that spoke only a Chinese dialect. A stack of chairs next to our booth was off putting, but the overall atmosphere was tasteful and enjoyable. The tab was not outrageous. If anything, I was surprised at how reasonable lunch turned out. As for the food, it was good - but not great. We had four for lunch - all of us were born in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. The vegetables were well cooked. They were out of live fish at the time, so our cod was frozen - and the flesh was mealy. (The waiter disclosed that lack of fresh fish when we ordered.) Na's Secret Tofu was a disappointment - too eggy in flavor and texture. Nothing I wrote should be considered off-putting. Some of us are Chinese food fanatics and weigh the overall quality of the cuisine over other qualities. It is a good Chinese restaurant, just not the very best in a part of the world where absolutely incredible Chinese cuisine is available.

Donโt be cheated by the unnoticeable outside look. This restaurant is gorgeous inside. The food is authentic in taste but modern in presentation. Though it is categorized as Beijing cuisine, it is totally different from the home-cooked Beijing food. The cuisine is meant to be the one for loyal families, so it is the best of the best food in ancient China. The experience is more like eating like the king in terms of quality and tastes which are curated from so many Chinese dishes. The ingredients are fresh. We ordered one steamed fish and amazed by the fresh taste of the fish. It is steamed just right, neither rare nor over-cooked, bringing out the beauty of steam technics from the Cantonese cuisine. I love the dessert, which tastes like light yogurt, which feels healthy and satisfying. The tea is also very different from the other from other Chinese restaurants. It has a sweet taste, which might be the eight treasure tea I missed from Beijing. The decoration is tasteful and the waiters/waitresses are knowledgeable about the amazing food. This restaurant is absolutely a great place for a business meal or a family treat.

It is a must to have reservation before going to this restaurant. We called ahead but were told to just go and wait in the restaurant since they were busy during CNY. When we arrived, our party was #47 for dinner on Sat night. After an hour, we were #26, then we gave up. I was too hungry and decided to have something simple instead. XD Last time we went to Bistro Na's, most dishes were YUMMY and very creative. Service was friendly and prompt. I think it deserves Michelin 1 star. We will go back when it's not so busy.
Be the first to ReplyHeavenly Crispy Shrimp ๐ฆ
My go to place for Chinese food in Temple City. The crispy shrimp is savory and crunchy enough to be devoured with its entire shell. The drunken chicken is moist and prepared perfectly with equal balance of wine and seasoning that just melts in your mouth. Never a bad meal at Bistro Na.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome!!!
In a pretty busy mall with limited parking. I was kinda reluctant to be here but omg I would say this was probably the one of best Chinese in town. Everything was sooo good. I didnโt take a pic of all the food served but everything was just awesome!!! I highly recommend this place they can accommodate small group to even larger group we went in there as party of 25.
Be the first to ReplyUpscale but flavor fall short
The restaurant claims that no MSG was added and organic greens are used. I was felling thirsty after the meal even though the dishes are definitely not salty and I was drinking plenty of tea during the meal. I think there may be ready made sauces they use which had MSG in them already. This is the first US branch from a famous Beijing chain. The dishes are nicely executed with traditional and inventive methods, however, some dishes look better than they taste. One of the example is the crispy shrimp, it has sweet and sour sauce and the selling point is that you can even eat the shell. The shell is tasty crispy and the sauce is okay (not enough acidity to balance the sweetness of the sauce), however, the shrimp itself lack the savory umani you get from top quality shrimp. The restaurant boasts the dishes are from the imperial cook book, but the ingredients are not necessarily top notch. We did not order some of the most expensive dishes, which supposedly use top notch ingredients. But I think a great restaurant should be able to deliver great flavor with every dish they list on the menu.

Our wait time was 2 hours which is way too long. However, once we were seated, the food came almost instantly.
I have to be more detailed with this review than with other places because this place does have 1 Michelin star.
The wait time - very long
The food - really really good.
The value - extremely good.
The take home for me from this Michelin star restaurant was that the food was really good, we loved everything, I wasn't crazy about the lamb - definitely had better lamb elsewhere, but all our other dishes (5-6 of them) were really good.
The best part is that you go in, you have a decent amount of food and really good food and you don't get ripped off.
Very affordable.
I am surprised and pleased they didn't jack up the prices.
Can't give the food enough compliments.
The staff could be friendlier but the place is super busy so it's understandable.
The fruit tea is to die for. The emperor's soup is also really really good. You can't go wrong with anything, I feel.
Affordable Michelin Star Restaurant!
Wow! Was this place lively on a Friday afternoon! Luckily, we were smart enough to make a reservation a couple days before on yelp, very convenient and fast, and were seated within five minutes. Every single table was full at 12:30pm but we did notice that the crowd thinned our around 1:15pm so if you don't have a reservation, and don't want to wait, try stopping by then! (I can't say what the weekends are like).
I love the decoration of the place that has a modern twist on a historical design. They also have a long line of private rooms for those who are celebrating something big (or small!) but there is a minimum for the rooms. Do stop and take a look at the lovely Chinese instruments up on the walls as well!
To start, the menus were novels themselves--they have a ton of pages with pictures so you can visualize your food for easy ordering. I really did not have enough fingers to save the pages that had the food I wanted to order but we managed to get it down to a few dishes: emperor's jar, empress's jar, crispy shrimp, chili tofu skin salad, hidden treasure lotus root, pea sprouts with mushroom, chili pork with cauliflower, and na's secret tofu.
Service is incredibly quick! We were served within minutes of putting our order in and the food just kept coming (no awkward sitting around time!)
We started with the tofu salad that was nice and cool and definitely has a numbness spicy taste to it that is quite a kick! I also really enjoyed that lotus root that is stuffed with sticky rice and is a nice sweet break from the savory dishes. Na's secret tofu was also a really special dish with house-made tofu and a nice dipping sauce--firm and flavorful!
Also, don't be that person to skip the skin on the crispy shrimp! Eat the WHOLE dang thing!! It is quite special and definitely flavorful.
We finished with my personal favorites: the milky cheese fish and sweet fried rice cakes! The fish was smooth, refreshing, and wasn't too sweet and the server made the fish do a little jig before he made it swim to our table. The rice cakes were also really special with a tea flavor to it when eaten plain, and then dipped in condensed milk, it became a whole different flavor blast (really delicious and again, not too sweet...I feel like I have used delicious many times in this review).
We also had a pear juice/tea to drink throughout the meal that was nice and warm. It was a great substitute to tea and tasted a little like Chinese snow fungus soup. Would recommend!
Overall, for a Michelin star restaurant, the prices are easy on the wallet! We cleared all of our plates and it was slightly too much for our group of four, but a satisfying meal all the same! Great service and great food! Will definitely be back! DELICIOUS!
Parking: easy garage parking to keep your car in the shade! They also have an outside lot but it can get quite busy so skip the waiting and head straight down!
One Michellin Star Restaurant - Specific Taste Palettes
We ordered 12 different dishes including a soup for seven diners with different flavor profiles. Our intent was to small plate dine each dish. Not one of us loved every single dish but there was such different textures and flavors that the restaurant offered, each one of us found our favorite dishes. The staff (especially June) was incredible in explaining each dish and making accommodating for different plating since our table could only hold 3-4 dishes at any one time. We never sat for very long without another hot dish coming out to fill a finished dish's area. It is truly a dining experience and what better way to try a one star Michellin restaurant than with family and friends.

Upscale dining Beijing Style
When you walk into Bistro Na's, you feel like you just walked into one of Beijing's local neighborhoods and about to eat in an imperial style restaurant. The restaurant is decorated in a classy style like a Beijing restaurant. The menu is expansive and has some interesting classic Chinese dishes (no General Tso's chicken). The atmosphere is relaxed and the service was attentive and fast. The food was very fresh and exquisite. The prime rib is exceptional. Bistro Na's has been having a very good word of mouth in the community and expect that there would be some wait for a table. Reservations are recommended. Expect the prices to be on the premium side.
