Great food, mediocre service
The food was delicious, however I was disappointed at the service. We explicitly booked for 5:45pm, and then arrived only to be questioned and made to feel a bit unwelcome. The service was mediocre for the prices and I felt the waitress was trying to upsell 'did you want this? did you want that?' and then the kicker 'Did you want to leave a tip?!!!!!' ummmm with barely a smile cracked at us all night, definately no! We had an enjoyable time anyway together and we enjoyed the food.

Great place with a fine selection of cuts, sides and a good wine list as well. Generous servings and cooked just how I liked it. All who attended were very happy with their meals. All steaks are served with a classic-style potato with sour cream and chives. Came with a group of 12, split between 2 tables (tables only seat 6).

Food was ok, but they love the salt!!! We asked for a bottle of wine, that was not available...asked for another - that also was not available and the staff blamed someone else for not updating the menu. We went through about 4 options before finding one they actually had. The price of the steak was outlined on the menu - but on ordering we were told it was an extra $15 per 100grms if the steak weighed more. The staff looking after us made us feel like we were an inconvenience and impeding on her time. Food was ok, for the price you can find better.

There’s plenty of great restaurants in Canberra but this isn’t one of them. Surprising that the place is full. It’s overpriced and the type of food served will send you into cardiac arrest. There’s nothing healthy on the menu. Everything was over cooked and over seasoned. The potato was dry and looked like it was reheated. The service was ordinary-—staff don’t engage and show no interest in the customers. The bench was seating uncomfortable. We were unlucky to be seated near the front door on a cold night and the chill was distracting and unbearable. The ambulance was downright creepy. We were disappointed and we won’t be back.

This is what cool looked like in the 1970s. The garlic prawns and steak I had were from another simpler, less pretentious time. The service was excellent.

I planned a birthday dinner at the Charcoal Restaurant and booked one week before. We got there and they didn't have my booking. Bad sign, I should had run away. While it is a bit pricey, I have been there before years ago and the food was amazing. But to my surprise while the menu was the same, the quality of the food was bad. Long waiting, burnt potatoes and burnt steak. We paid for a 500grs that was more like a 300grms. We were looking to have deserts too but we quickly changed our minds. I do not recommended it at all.

I returned to Charcoal for the first time since it changed hands some years ago. I have been going to the Charcoal Grill (as it was called) since 1980. The menu is largely unchanged (which I liked). I ordered tornados béarnaise, medium rare. I received two peaces of scotch (not eye) fillet that were about one centimetre thick, and therefore too thin to be cooked accurately (they were medium). I complained to the manager that I had ordered and was paying for eye fillet, not scotch fillet. She insisted that my meat was eye fillet and refused to allow us to order pudding! A steakhouse, a manger and a chef who do not, apparently, know the difference between scotch and eye fillet or, at $55.00 a serve, do they?

Average meal. Had mixed oysters, basic garlic bread, carpet bag steak, sirloin. Decent but nothing standout considering price.

I wasn’t sure if I should love or hate this place. The whole experience is quaint and kitsch. The service Was uninspired and and and inattentive. The place is clearly institution that hasn’t changed its menu in 30 or 40 years. Carpet bag steak, steak Diane. All favorites for some, I guess, but they’re just so many more interesting and creative ways to serve a beautiful piece of meat. The portion sizes were all too big. The smallest steak advertised by weight was 400 g. I would’ve much preferred 300g options at a lower price. None of the ones by the glass advertised on the menu were actually available. The waitress just brought me whatever Pinot noir they had open, despite me explicitly ordering one off the menu. To the credit when I confronted her about it they didn’t charge me, but it was just another afflection of the poor service. The decor was seriously dated, literally dated with the walls littered With food service industry awards and old empty wine ‘ bottles of note’. I’m not sure why they think we are interested to know that they won best steakhouse in Canberra in 1994? If it had been half the price then I could’ve enjoyed it more, but to pay top dollar for that experience felt like Being taken advantage of. If you want to pay top dollar for a decent steak this might be your place, but I certainly won’t be rushing back.

We art at this establishment and had a wonderful night. The steaks we had were outstanding - cooked to perfection. The accompanying dishes were great. The staff were attentive and friendly. Cant wait to return
