Chez Janou Paris Reviews
Must visit when in Paris !!
The best duck breast and the best chocolate mousse Iโve ever tried ( and Iโve tried many!) We ordered 4 different dishes plus dessert and everything was excellent, service professional. I donโt know why thereโre any bad reviews, we loved our experience there. Do not fall for โtheyโre racist, food taste badโsort of reviews. There was Japanese couple dining next to us , they could barely speak English and couldnโt speak any French, the waters were extremely patient and professional with them. Maybe itโs better to come for lunch, the waiters are less busy then. And honestly , if you do come for dinner, be prepared that you can not be served until 7pm that is totally normal in France. I do think that tourists need to do some homework before coming at the wrong time complaining and ruining the rating for such an excellent place.
Be careful about coming here if you're Asian.
Straight up racists. Treated other families with respect and courtesy but completely ignored mine because we spoke in Mandarin. Googled them And found out other Asian people have had similar issues. Y'all gotta do better.
Don't Fall for the Hype:
My recent visit to Chez Janou in the heart of Paris left a bitter aftertaste โ and it wasn't from the food (which we never actually got to try). While the restaurant boasts a charming atmosphere and a renowned Provenรงal menu, the service left so much to be desired, it overshadowed any potential enjoyment. We arrived with a reservation, eager to experience the famed cuisine. However, upon entering, we were met with a confusing situation. Despite it not being particularly late, we were informed that "no food would be served until 7 pm." This unexpected policy left us with a dilemma: wait or leave? We opted to wait, hoping the delay would be worth it. After a frustrating wait, we finally approached the busy staff to place our order. However, communication seemed to break down. When we attempted to order from the dessert menu, a waitress with a dismissive tone informed us that "desserts are considered food here." This left us feeling unwelcome and unsure of the restaurant's actual policy. Being directed to the bar stools instead of a proper table further emphasized the lack of hospitality. The entire experience felt uninviting and discriminatory, especially for tourists. Parisian charm should extend to service as well as ambiance. We ultimately decided to take our business elsewhere. The prospect of potentially facing further confusion and an unwelcoming environment simply wasn't worth the risk. Chez Janou missed an opportunity to showcase its culinary delights and charm a new customer. If you're looking for a truly delightful dining experience, I suggest exploring the many other phenomenal restaurants Paris has to offer. There's no shortage of delicious food and warm hospitality in the City of Lights. Skip the frustration and find a spot that will treat you with the respect you deserve. After all, a Parisian vacation shouldn't be filled with unnecessary confusion and disappointment.
Worst Experience
I recently visited a highly anticipated dessert spot known for its chocolate mousse. Despite the hype, my experience was disappointing. Upon arrival, we were informed that no food would be served until 7 PM. We decided to stay and wait, ordering drinks and perusing the food menu in the meantime. However, as we began placing our orders, a waitress rudely reminded us that food wasn't available until 7 PM. When we clarified that we only wanted dessert, we were told we couldn't be served and were directed to sit at the bar instead. The staff's treatment was unwelcoming and discriminatory, making us feel extremely uncomfortable. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this place, especially for tourists. The service was poor, and the overall atmosphere was uninviting. Save yourself the trouble and find a more welcoming spot to enjoy your desserts.
Racist restaurant
Racist place. I advice people not to go. Mediocre food. Paris really living to it reputation as not friendly and being racist. I was having such a good time until I visited this place.
Friendly place friendly staff
Food was excellent as well as the service. Staff was friendly and happy to assist with choice of a meal. Had a really nice late dinner :)
Heel erg teleurgesteld
The worst experience that we ever had, they were so racist and unprofessional And they food tasted so bad canโt even explain I would not recommend anyone eat there
Very vey nice
Great local place for a great pastis. Next time we will make reservations and try their food. the atmosphere was very nice
Very French ๐ฅ
We had a lovely meal , was very quaint & had great vibe, highly recommend , staff very helpful. We did make a reservation as they seem to be very busy most nights.

Hotel recommended, and we were not disappointed! Crowded, so be prepared to wait. The hour wait was worth it (went to wine cafe around the corner). I had Entrecรดte Bistrot served with roasted potatoes. My friend had the Risotto. Both were delicious. Great atmosphere and service. True Parisian experience.
Super cute restaurant.
Good food. But get a reservation before showing up!! They can be very rude!!
You came here or not Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.
m. and the person outside told us we would have to wait around 45 minutes for a table but barely were there for like 5 minutes. They were calling names very quickly and someone was not there. Their name was being canceled so we were actually there for only 5 minutes. Definitely glad we waited. Place was completely fact but the food actually came so so quick, we were surprised! Chocolate Mousse - UNBELIEVABLE! Like for real unbelievable! So rich and creamy and smooth, it's hard to stop eating! Best part is it's unlimited so you can have as much as you want! I actually asked for extra bread on the table and had it with the bread - so good! Goat Cheese (chevre) - AMAZING! Definitely the best item we ordered to the table. The Jesus really creamy and soft and went so well with that tomato sauce. Kind of a thing on the side. Perfect with a baguette on the table! Mussels - Not sure what they did here but it was actually really really good! Probably the #2 item of the savory things we ordered. Have to add that lemon juice on top because it changes it and takes it up to a whole other level? Ratatouille - This was cold but somehow it actually worked! Game with some crusty bread on the side but actually went much better with the baguette slices they brought on the table. Also came with some tarpendne, and glad we could try some of that. Ahi Tuna Steak - Really good perfectly with nice charring and perfect flavor. And appreciate the vegetables on the side as well. Duck Breast - Will not recommend. The one item we actually did not like. The meat was too fatty and chewy and we could not eat a piece without leaving that extra chewy ending off on the plate.
This place lived up to the hype.
Called a few weeks ahead and made a reservation. We were seated immediately. Service was excellent. The food was superb. Super busy and patrons were seated close to each other. Filled with tourists and locals. A must when in Paris.

Went here after a long day, we attempted to make a reservation earlier but all was in french. The host was very nice and said he could give us till 8, we took it! nothing spoke to us on the menu, so we decided to just get some desert and a few drinks (3 of us so the bill was going to be high). We waited 10-15 minutes until our server came, he said he was "so ready for his" told him our order and said "if you aren't getting food I can't help you" and walked away. He rudely didn't even give us a chance to even order a starter. We saw this on Tik Tok and heard so much hype and was so excited. This is not worth it. Considering the service and high prices of the dinner options. I get that we are American and visiting but I wouldn't have had a problem if they stated this before we sat or if given a chance. If you have to order something else just tell us without even giving us an option. Highly disappointed.

At first I was happy with the service, the man working the door was able to squeeze us in without a reservation but we were warned that they would need the table within the hour which was fine because we planned on just getting dessert and drinks. When we ordered desert the waiter didn't even let me finish my sentence before cutting me off to tell me that they get "very busy and cannot sell out of the mousse" which is fine but what was displeasing was then he proceeded to once again cut me off to tell me that had the best starters in the city but unless we were buying "he could not help us." Before we could even respond he rushed away. Did not feel welcomed at all if you know people come for the desert maybe just sell a pre fixed menu or let customers know at the door no need to be so rude about it.
Best meal I've had in Paris so far.
The ambiance was great and the food even better, but definitely get a reservation or get there early!

This was the first restaurant I visited in Paris after a 2 hour train trip from London. Even at 10:30pm on a Tuesday night, the place was bustling and people were seated thigh to thigh -- I can't imagine how crowded it would've been on a weekend evening. With that being said - we were seated within 20 minutes as walk-ins with no reservation. The waitress immediately informed us that the kitchen was closing soon as we walked in and helped us order quickly. We started off with some mussels, which was recommended by the waitress -- however, it was just ok. I would recommend skipping it to save room for the dessert (more on that later) or going with a different starter. My friend ordered the escargot tagliatelle, and I ordered the grilled duck breast as our mains. They were both very delicious. As far as the duck breast went -- it was not gamey at all, and could even be mistaken for a more chewy beef steak to the unaware. Now - for the dessert which was the highlight of the night. I HIGHLY recommend getting the chocolate mousse. It was the best chocolate dessert I've had so far. More substantial than a whipped cream or icing, but more delicate than a supple moist chocolate cake. I would come back just for the chocolate mousse.

Another restaurant with a long wait line that somehow resulted in a short cut to excellent food and service for us. We were seated at the counter because we were willing to chat with locals and staff who had a lovely sense of humor and were very hospitable. They made our ratatouille and chocolate mousse dreams come true in the most picturesque spot on a random corner in the 4th.
Lovely spot
Lovely spot. Super friendly staff. Great atmosphere. Food was good, but came cold. Go early/late as it gets packed very quickly.
Chez Janou is where it's at.
Absolutely amazing. The service was extraordinary and the food was excellent. We took recommendations from our server and ordered the mussels (omg delicious - our kids even devoured them), as well as steak and duck dishes. Everything was beyond. The house wine was also a hit. We ended the night with both the mousse and crรจme brรปlรฉe and WOW. I will miss this place when we return to the US.
Gem of a restaurant
Excellent food. We went for lunch on Sunday without a booking but the staff managed to accommodate us with little fuss. Bar staff and front of house were fantastic. So much food and fabulous quality!! Definitely a place to go.

My husband and I had our first dinner in Paris here and everything was great! Yummy, affordable wine, the best scallops and risotto and steak that was cooked just how my husband likes it!
Yummy!
The food was absolutely delicious and the ambiance is great. Be sure to order the chocolate mousse for dessert. The restaurant was very busy when we went, but the staff made their best efforts to get us in and out quickly.
Favourite restaurant in Paris
Chez Janou was by far our favourite place during our Paris trip. | The staff were incredible, knowledgeable about allergens and so helpful. I am celiac and there were a few great options, the famous chocolate mousse being one of them. The restaurant is beautiful and we sat here for a long late lunch with great wine and incredible food! You must book as they were turning people away on the door and were fully booked for every sitting, all weekend. Can't wait to go back.

They weren't exaggerating on social media - this is indeed the best chocolate mousse in Paris! Trust me, you need this in your life. Despite arriving early for our reservation, they accommodated us after a 10-minute wait. We also tried their mushroom risotto, which was delicious. The ambience is lively and fun, making it an overall great experience. You need to make a reservation in advance to get a table here
This place is worth all the hype.
They get really busy and don't take online reservations - we walked in a couple days before to reserve! The food is impeccable (order the ratatouille, magret de canard & chocolate mousse). Wine is reasonably priced and their complementary olives are garlicky and delicious. They also hand out free melon liqueur after your meal - what's not to love! 10/10, I highly recommend.
Mousse au chocolate
A great spot with great chocolate mousse. I was not happy with our server who tried to shame us into a tip but other than that it was great
Incredible.
The ratatouille and mussels to start were perfect. We ended up getting three entrees (steak, duck, and mushroom risotto) because we just couldn't choose only two, and all three were amazing. The steak and duck were both cooked perfectly rare in a way that you rarely see in the US. The risotto had unbelievable flavor and a really great texture. And then of course, we had the chocolate mousse, which was perfection. (Our kids agreed.) We also got the cheese plate for dessert, which was the only thing we weren't crazy about.
The food is great here.
I highly recommend the steak frites and the mousse au chocolat for dessert

tried this place at the recommendation of a friend, an expat who'd been living in the area for a few months. i dined solo so it was fairly easy to be seated at the bar. it's very obviously a spot for locals, the ambiance was very fun and lively and i can see why it was recommended. the reason for a 3/5 was because the mushroom risotto i ordered wasn't really all that appealing. i'm not sure if it's because i'm used to different spices/flavors but it tasted quite bland, and with paired with the texture it became a bit too much. if i had the chance to return and try something else i would, since the menu was in french and i don't speak it i just picked the most identifiable dish which was a mistake on my part.
Closed.
Closed. Closed. this restaurant is closed. Do not know what happened. This restaurant is closed.
I had spent the morning contemplating modern art.
During a two-week stint in Paris, I ended up at the ever fascinating Centre Pompidou, a museum I admire deeply and yet at the same time a museum by which I often find myself feeling incomprehensibly drained. As I descended the building's trademark transparent escalators back down into the bustle of Les Halles, I knew that there was only one thing that could revive me in that moment: an ungodly amount of chocolate mousse. Luckily, I was just a short walk away from the heart of the Marais, where Chez Janou sits poised on a corner beneath a green and white striped awning. The first word that comes to mind upon setting eyes on the place is "darling," although passing through the heavy doors gives way to a whole new landscape of vocabulary -- hip, timeless, quirky, and indisputably cool. (Cool here being pronounced with a French accent, of course.) The walls are tastefully cluttered with colorful remnants of a Parisian past, and exploring them feels almost like going backwards and forwards in time all at once. If there's a way for a restaurant to win my heart from the get-go, it's a solid welcome. Sometimes that comes in the form of a friendly host or a fun ritual about finding your table. Other times -- and oftentimes -- it comes in the form of olives. From cerignola to castelvetrano (a personal favorite), a small bowl of olives feels to me a lot like an olive branch itself -- it is a predictor of peace, an indication of community, and a signal of good things to come. Of course, this little snack to whet my appetite also happened to be a perfectly savory complement to the undeniably sweet dish my dining companion and I had come for: the establishment's famed chocolate mousse. As anyone who has passed through the doors of Chez Janou knows, however, this is no ordinary chocolate mousse. It does not come served in a sweet little ramekin garnished with berries and and shaved chocolate or powdered sugar, most certainly not. Instead, it is brought to the table in a mammoth ceramic dish, having almost the appearance of a teacup on steroids. A massive scoop is then procured from the cavernous vessel and ceremoniously flopped over onto a plate to be shared, savored, and lauded by all. When our server asked if we'd like a second scoop, he quickly added "no waste!" A man after my own heart. (And he was right, of course -- one scoop for the two of us most definitely did the trick.) I was only more smitten when I saw the adorable signature Chez Janou nougat sitting innocently beside my companion's cappuccino, and again when I tucked one of their precious takeaway cards in my wallet. (Another way to win me over -- give me a mini postcard at the end of the meal, and the deal is sealed.) The restaurant was so proud of this special little world it had created, and by association, I had become so too. Chez Janou is a delightful time capsule into the Paris of yesterday, infused with the flavors and the flair of the modern-day city of love. You'll find more than just an impeccable cure to your sweet tooth -- you'll also find kindness, camaraderie, and an infectious lightheartedness that's far more important than anything that could be plated. We visited Paris and tried many restaurants, but Chez Janou
We visited Paris and tried many restaurants, but Chez Janou was by FAR our favorite. We are still talking about it constantly and I hope to be able to come and visit again in the future! Chez Janou feels like a real spot for locals and is so comfortable you want to stay and hang out all night. Their menu is amazing and vegetarian-friendly - it was hard to make a decision! One thing is for sure, you HAVE to order the chocolate mousse for dessert. It is an experience, and is SO GOOD!!! I do recommend making a reservation (seems that you can only do this via phone or in person) if you can, as we waited quite a while to get a table. This being said it was worth every minute of the wait. Please make the stop - you will love it!
Right out of a French post card kind of perfect.
Lively and fun. Place was packed at 10:00 PM but they squeezed us in.Staff and other patrons were friendly. Everyone there to have a good time. Food was good. Enjoyed duck, scallops, mussels and pasta. Of course the chocolate soufflรฉ. And then the shots of chestnut liqueur started flowing. Ended up with a bottle on our table shared with the table next to us. Sat outside in March. Maybe that is why the liqueur appeared? Waiter made our evening very fun. Good value for the experience. Highly recommend.
Favorite restaurant in Paris
I have been here several times for dinner or lunch with friends and family. The atmosphere is lively, and the food fantastic. We have enjoyed superb specials of the day and dishes from the menu - all were tasty, authentic and healthy. Though once the lunch menu was a bit boring with a fish-potato dish. Staff is nice, helpful and really efficient.
One of my favorite restaurants in Paris.
Always crowded so come ready to wait or get a reservation.

Set on a smaller street tucked in the neighborhood, Chez Janou is a classic dinner spot. We didn't have reservations, so there was a 50 minute wait. The risotto shot up to my number 1 Paris dish on our 2019 trip!
Very busy, very good.
Visited for lunch on a Saturday with my daughter. We did not have a reservation and were seated outside under a canopy. We had entrecรดte and bouillabaisse. Bith were very good. Service was fast and friendly despite s fully booked restaurant. The chocolate pudding sessert was very good and extremely fillingโฆ
The very best bistro.

Charming authentic bistro
Had a wonderful lunch. Highlights: butternut squash soup, frog legs, roast duck breast, bouillabaisse. Try the daily specials! Staff were very kind, friendly, and patient with us (we have limited french). This appears to be a local favorite, but they are welcoming to tourists too.
Favorite Restaurant in Le Marais
I cannot recommend this place enough. If it was possible to give it more than 5 stars I would. The food is incredible, the location is prime, and the decor is charming. The first time I went I got the โravioliโ (not American style, very classic French cuisine), the ratatouille, and the seared mushrooms. It was truly all amazing. The bread is fresh, the service is extremely friendly, and the wine was amazing (as expected in France). The second time I went I got the steak as my main and it did not disappoint. For dessert, you have to get their famous chocolate mousse, but we also shared the pear that is covered is chocolate and granola which was incredible. New flavors I was delighted to try. Additionally, if you are looking for somewhere a lot of locals like to venture, this is the place. Although there are a lot of tables inside, the noise levels are manageable. It is in a neighborhood called โLe Maraisโ which is wonderful to walk around and has charming shops of all different kinds to explore. I love Chez Janou!!

I came here on my first trip to Paris and had a magical time. The chocolate mousse was worth a trip back to Paris. We came back with our girls and we're turned away because we only wanted drinks and dessert. The gentleman was incredibly rude. Had he given us an ounce of kindness we would've tried again when they weren't so busy. I realize the place is small but you should never turn people away.

A diamond among gems in Paris! It is true that you can throw a stone and find amazing food in Paris, but this place was truly special. Not only was every dish perfectly prepared, but the staff was outstanding. My friend and I were exhausted and hangry, and willing to wait for a table but asked about the bar as an option. We were seated immediately and got amazing service from Erwhen (sp?), the bartender. He was funny and entertaining as he took care of our food and drink needs. Go visit this place and if you're lucky you'll get a seat at the bar!

Just a couple of blocks north of Place du Vosges, this is my idea of a classic French bistro. The place is sardine-packed full, and the food is straightforward and very good. Our waiter was more than proficient in English, and was genuinely warm, funny and helpful. We commented on the FULL restaurant at 3:00 pm, and he responded, "The food is good and it's cheap." That sums it up. Be prepared to wait for a table, and MOS DEF save room for the gorgeous chocolate mousse.
Very nice local spot.
Good food and service. Prices are fair and a decent local wine list.
