Chubby Fish Allambie Heights Reviews from The Last Year
Literally my favorite restaurant ever!!!! Definitely be
Literally my favorite restaurant ever!!!! Definitely be prepared to wait to get a seat (as space is extremely limited), but it's 100% worth it. The staff is so amazing and the vibe is elevated but still feels so inviting and friendly. We had 7 of us in the group and split everything. From the salad to the lobster roll, we were absolutely savoring every bit! All of the plates were fresh and full of flavor. Will definitely come back!
OVERRATED
The most overhyped restaurant in Charleston, and it's not close. I don't get it. First, no reservations. So you have to grovel by getting there at 4pm just so you can have the pleasure of eating there. And that is exactly their attitude. If you don't mind waiting an hour outside sweating your tail off, good for you. But then the payoff should be great. It is just not. We did get seated right when it opened. But we sat at a two seater facing the wall. Literally. The wall is a foot away. Behind us, there is a small rectangular table for four: for people to stand up when they have dinner. Ridiculous. Behind them is a community table of 10. The whole thing is weird. Then the dinner. We are foodies, and love many Charleston restaurants. The food here is sub par. The oysters on the half shell were terrible, as was the smoky sauce they give you. The stone crabs were fresh but nothing special. The Cauliflower is one of there signature dishes and was good but the lamb and the pasta dishes were simply awful. We finished with the crab rice and it was just ok. Finally, we had to try one of there popular deserts. Some rock hard vanilla ice cream wrapped in stale bread crumbs. Awful. The place also makes you feel you are in a meat market. Dishes flying at you by the minute. Can't relax and enjoy the meal. They also only serve beer and wine. Why? I know we are in the minority but felt strongly enough that this is an overhyped, over rated, and sub par restaurant that you should avoid. There are so many better places, with better vibes, better service, and better food.
It's all about managing expectations .
.left after totally mismanaged and zero accommodating wait time. They clearly don't need your business. Lots of other great options in Charleston. Don't fall into this trap.
This is long overdue, as we visited Chubbyfish on April
This is long overdue, as we visited Chubbyfish on April 23rd, 2024. My husband and I were on an anniversary road trip through the south, we had never been to Charleston before, and we didn't do much research ahead of the trip for food stops (like we normally would have done). We ended up here because we were having a wonderful dinner the night before at another very popular restaurant on the main street. We were chatting with their manager about where locals love and her kitchen staff's favorite. She gave us a short list of favorites, and noted one was a "must do"... Chubbyfish. She went on to inform us of the impending James Beard Award that the chef was up for and told us that if we were going to try it, "now is the time" before it blows up even more. She gave us the recommendation that you need to be standing in line NO LATER than 4:45pm on the day you want to dine (there are no reservations, but there certainly was a line on this random Tuesday afternoon!). We were towards the back of that line, standing on a suburban sidewalk, shaded by neighborhood trees (could be worse). When we got to the front, the first seating of the entire restaurant had been sat (yes, all at once). We put our names down for 6:30pm and went for a walk to kill time. When we came back, the hostess confirmed we were second in line to be sat as tables got up. She also took our (alcoholic) drink orders and we were permitted to drink our Rosé on their sidewalk, which was nicely shaded from the hot sun by the beautiful mature trees. I was starting to get excited. It was just us 2 and we got SUPER LUCKY to be sat at the chef's table (which is the bartop seating at the back of the restaurant, facing the plating area of the kitchen). Having done some reading on the restaurant, the chef, and their mission and history, I instantly recognized Chef when we were sat. We made it known (in a very polite way), that we were going to be consulting with Chef during our experience, so the waiter was mostly left to attend to his other tables and bring us more wine. Of course, all food was excellent; we weren't surprised by that. But, I would say that the Caviar sandwiches were a MUST have and I am not really that into Caviar. Each person should get their own, but you CAN share one between two people if you only want the smallest taste. (Go for one each!) Overall, it was an excellent experience and it was also very exciting to get personal explanations, recommendations, and indepth discussions straight from a newly minted James Beard award nominated Chef. You can get all the same information from other reviews, but let me tell you... if you have the opportunity to sit at the back kitchen hightop... take it! That's my main recommendation.
One of my favorite restaurants in Charleston! The wait in
One of my favorite restaurants in Charleston! The wait in line is well worth it. The grilled oysters are my favorite in town!
An amazing little restaurant in Charleston South Carolina
An amazing little restaurant in Charleston South Carolina with the absolute best food ever!
This place is super cool - they let you drink on the street
This place is super cool - they let you drink on the street when you're waiting for a table!!! The dishes are super creative and just goddamn delicious. When I heard they were nominated for a James beard award, I was positive they'd get it. Sadly they didn't, but I think their food is still top notch. You will not be disappointed
Limited gluten free but delicious.
One person in our group has celiac. The server said a lot of dishes have soy sauce (which has gluten). He named about five dishes that we could have, which was very disappointing. A simple switch to gluten free soy sauce sounds like it would open up a lot of other opportunities and I hope the restaurant will consider that change. Anyway, we ordered four of his recommendations: squash, cauliflower, curried oysters, and snapper. They were all amazing! We will be back and if we have to eat the same four things again, we will still be happy. Best food experience in a long while.
Came here with 3 friends on a Saturday evening.
We got in line at 4:15 and got in for the first seating, but there were still about 40 people ahead of us in line and many more behind us. My personal favorites were the blue crab tagliatelle, which had a lot of crab in it and a lemon flavor, and the red snapper curry. My friends really liked the lionfish tempura as well. All this was enough for the 4 of us to feel satiated, but be aware that the plates are pretty small. Not sure if I'd wait that long again, but if you happen along on a weekday night when they're less busy it's worth a visit.
OMG the food is amazing.
Simply a cut above. Everything we had on the two nights we went - yes we went twice because the food was so outstanding - was simply wonderful. The fish, seafood and oysters were so fresh and were combined with flavors that just made them sing. The black bass tempura with the soy beurre blanc sauce melts in your mouth. My husband loved the raw oysters. The fried oyster roll with dill tartar sauce and freshly made chips is soooo amazingly good. The chili garlic shrimp was such a fantastic combo of flavors and the shrimp were so fresh. The blue crab tagliatelle was a scrumptious pasta dish with leeks, asparagus and trout roe that had a creamy, lemony flavor that was balanced with the salty roe. I'm not generally a fan of roe but it was just what the dish needed. Staff is so friendly and nice. The recognized us the second night and made us feel so welcome. You have to get in line 30 to 45 minutes before they open at 5pm to get a table and on the second night we were prepared to stand in the rain to get in. We have had some great seafood in Charleston but this is by far and away the top of heap.
10 out of 10 dinner! We were able to book the large table
10 out of 10 dinner! We were able to book the large table for a party of ten, committing to a food and beverage minimum. The menu is a surprise although you can request some types of items. The best things were the caviar sandwiches (what??) for being unique, any of the fresh fish and the desert. The desert was an icecream that looked like fried chicken in the most realistic way but tasted like the most amazing crunch coated creamy sweet treat. Try some of the stuff you might not normally- example the celery salad was such a cool dish and the lamb was lovely!
Everything was so good - one of the best meals I've ever
Everything was so good - one of the best meals I've ever had. Caviar sandwiches were delicious. Grilled oysters were the only thing that I wouldn't get again but still good. Fish curry had amazing flavor, but maybe a little heavy on rice compared to other ingredients. Lambs ribs were one of the best things I've ever tasted. Five stars if they took reservations. Almost a three hour wait on a Thursday is stupid. Grow up and take reservations like a real restaurant.
Good food, long wait and noisy
I know this place got a lot of hype but I don't get it. Yes, some of the food is really good, like the Crab Tagliatelle and the oyster rolls are fabulous. The cauliflower is good, but let's face it, it's cauliflower, The bone marrow was definitely not my thing but I know a lot of people like it. You can't order your own dinner so the table gets a bit of everything. It's expensive and so noisy you can't hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation. And don't even mention the ridiculous line to get in! The servers are really exceptional and answer any questions with patience and knowledge. If you don't mind the wait or the noise, go for it.
It feels a bit redundant to write a review on a place that
It feels a bit redundant to write a review on a place that is so obviously a knockout, but if I can offer one piece of advice: trust your server to order for the table. There's usually one "meh" selection on the menu -not here. ALL BANGERS!! The food, the service, the ambience are so so good. No notes. And don't skip dessert!
This place was absolutely fantastic.
The food was beyond fresh cooked right there before you. The ambient is amazing and incredibly cool. This is by far a place you must put on your list when visiting Charleston the freshest fish in Charleston cooked absolutely amazingly, and you will definitely enjoy their drinks.
Great service, great ambiance and spectacular food.
Chubby fish opens at 5PM, however there it typically a line forming around 4:30PM, for good reason. They do not take reservations. My boyfriend and I visited from out of town, and we were anticipating this restaurant and this well surpassed our expectations. Food: they have a variety of oysters you can choose from. The oysters were very fresh but a bit on the saltier side. But still good. Tuna crudo was also good but a bit salty as well. The blue crab pasta and bone marrow were my favorite. Super rich and flavorful. Plates are meant to be shared and the portions are on the smaller side. 10/10 would recommend! Come here if you are visiting Charleston.
The most incredible seafood creations with a changing menu,
The most incredible seafood creations with a changing menu, you'll get to try so many fresh and local foods. We can't recommend enough
If you’re willing to wait, go here for elevated seafood dishes
We happened to drive by a looong line of people waiting on the sidewalk as we were leaving town to have dinner at Nick’s German Kitchen. Wondering what the wait was for, I checked my map program and found the likely source - Chubby Fish. After reading many raving reviews, and craving some seafood anyway, we decided to give this a try. So on a Saturday afternoon, we walked over to the Chubby Fish and were not too surprised that at 4PM on a Saturday we were not the first people in line, waiting for the 5 PM opening. (There were about 5 parties in front of us, so we were definitely positioned pretty well.) We were quite impressed, however, at how long the line would grow to be during the next hour. And how many cars would drive by, windows open, yelling “It’s worth the wait!” At 5 PM the doors promptly opened and two greeters came out to start seating people. We received the requested table by the window for the two of us, and were told to take a picture of the menu hanging above the bar to use for ordering. We decided on two appetizers - the tilefish ceviche and the wagyu beef tartare (my husband’s preferred choice, though I like to remind him he/we may end up with prion disease later on in life … he just comments that at least we’ll forget about it LOL). They came out separately and were both so delicious. Even my picky husband who had previously proclaimed that this restaurant might just be a money making fad aka “goldmine”, admitted that the dishes lived up to his hoped-for expectations. The tartare was served with rice and seaweed wraps, and we were instructed to combine the rice and tartare in the wrap, and eat it together. It was amazing! My husband’s European heritage initially struggled with this combination. But I was able to convince him to try it, and he quickly admitted what an unexpected treat this was! As a main course we had ordered the smoked sheepshead curry and the blue crab tagliatelle. My husband’s dish (tagliatelle) came out first, and he decided to wait for my dish to be served before starting his. Unfortunately by that time, his had cooled off a bit, which he criticized (to me). Later on we saw that the neighboring tables were sharing all main courses amongst one another, which prevented any need to wait for all dishes to be out before starting to eat. Both the curry as well as the tagliatelle were delicious. But we liked the spiciness of my curry dish paired with the roasted nuts so much, that we ordered another one, which we ended up getting boxed and taking home. Overall the food was great, our server was awesome and totally on the spot from the get go. Beer and sodas btw are served by the can, with cartoon character glasses. Prices are on the higher end, but I feel worth it for the excellent dishes. Was it worth getting in line an hour before opening to get a seat? I feel it was. Would I do it again? Yup. I’ll get in line here again. Or better yet come later during the week and hopefully avoid having to wait altogether, the next time I’m in town.
Best food in Charleston.
Seafood is so fresh. James Beard finalist chef. Highly recommend.
Well worth the wait.
Food is absolutely the best in Charleston. The chef, himself, came over and helped me pick entree of choice. Very good service.
Came here on a Thursday evening at 8:30PM, 10min wait place
Came here on a Thursday evening at 8:30PM, 10min wait place was still bustling. Very friendly waitstaff. All of the food was perfectly cooked with some creative offerings. Flounder (3.5/5) - seemed like the most popular dish, fish was cooked perfectly, only 3.5 because of personal taste - didn't enjoy the brown butter sauce Grilled oysters (4/5) - Creative curry based sauce and corn flakes Wahoo ceviche (3/5) - Bottom hard to cut, flavor Thai inspo
This is my all time favorite restaurant in Charleston and I
This is my all time favorite restaurant in Charleston and I will proudly queue 45 minutes in the cold to get a good reservation. This is a pescatarians heaven with so many amazing dishes to pick from. And why pick one? We always order 5-7 small plates and raw dishes to get a sampling and are never disappointed. Service is always great and friendly, with the dining room a little snug, but still comfortable. Chefs table is super fun and they interact with you quite a bit too! Crudo, ceviche, the tempura are the three must have plates. Don't pass up a chance to eat here.
Got in at Chubby Fish
I am always hesitate to shell out five stars but the dish I had was a five star dish. It was wahoo with coconut and Brussels sprouts and it was the best dish I have had in a long time. Amazing! I was not a fan of the community table where my husband and I got the last seats, although the other dinners were delightful. But since we took a chance and were Lucky enough to get in, we made the most of the no reservations situation. Prices continue to go up on restaurant meals and sometimes I am uncomfortable with the amount we are spending. For this reason we may only go back for a really special occasion. The bill for the celery salad, tile fish curry entree (which was spicy and really too hot), wine and two beers for $140 was a lot for a Tuesday night.
Best restaurant I've ever eatin at in my entire life.
I'm 34. Thr food was DIVINE. everything I ate was incredible. I wish I lived above this spot. I will be visiting Charleston JUST to eat here. The caviar, lamb, wagyu, pasta and tuna were all delicious. Thank you ! The service was impeccable.

LOVE this place! 100% locally owned/operated (ie, no restaurant group masquerading as a local spot). The quirky, mismatched plates and glasses, the simple, cool lay out...just fantastic. Staff is cool and loved their product. Make no mistake, the food is the best part. It's terrific! When you want to get off King and get local, go to Chubby Fish but they don't take reservations so get their early and in person to get on the waitlist.
Oops
We didn’t get. No reservations allowed and three hour wait for a table 😕 The maitre d’ recommended a great place around the corner. We told our waitress what happened. She said, “Oh, that’s my favorite restaurant.” Maybe next time.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
