A Must To Dine
While visiting Carmel, we had dinner at this restaurant. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was very good and the portions were generous. But in the middle of dinner, a guitar player with help from the stag on percussion got the entire restaurant up dancing and clapping! We spoke with the owner/manager while we were leaving, complimenting him on our wonderful experience! If in Carmel, don’t miss this restaurant,

My wife and I had Saturday night dinner here to celebrate our anniversary. We had had lunch there three years ago and I was skeptical that it could meet the level of elegance that we wanted for our celebration. As a negative, it is kind of cramped and you have to navigate around tight tables. We shared a grilled veggie salad ($19) with warm vegetables such as eggplant on top. I would love to get the recipe. I had the Greek Moussaka $34) , which surprised me because it had a tomato rather than a pure Bechamel sauce the way I make it. My wife had the Greek Lamb Shank ($34) and really enjoyed it. I did not order wine because nothing on their wines by the glass list (which was thin) looked interesting with Moussaka. Our server was vey upbeat and present, responding to requests immediately. Part of the way through some guys with a guitar and drums did a rousing version of "Bomboleo" by the Gypsy Kings and got a lot of the tables dancing. Unfortunately, then they disappeared except to do a couple "Happy Birthday" for celebrants. We skipped dessert because we were full but after the bill they brought us a smaller sampler of their Baklava--I thought that was very classy and kind. Total bill with tax and 20% tip was $118.

This restaurant gave me one of the best dinning experiences I have had in years! The food was delicious and very generous ( highly recommend the Greek platter and almond halibut) and you can tell the love and quality that was put into it. The staff was super friendly and the live music was an experience like never before!
Be the first to ReplyNot For Everyone, But Great Food and Fun!
This is a very popular place on Ocean Avenue. Good luck without a reservation. It is small and the tables are jammed-in. The noise level is high. That increases significantly when the owner pulls out his amplified oud, someone else picks up a drum, and they launch into a wild, raucous,high-energy, infectious, long middle eastern song. In a flash, people are clapping, folks start dancing, and the staff will pull you out of your chair and encourage you to join in the fun. Joyful and happy music. Is that for everyone? No. But, we loved it. Oh, I forgot to mention the food: if you like middle eastern food, this is the place. Everything is fresh and tasty. We shared the Dametra Royal Combination: dolmas, hummus, Baba Ganouge, spaaikopita, Tzatziki and warm pita bread. That was a mountain of food. The portions of the entrees and the desserts seemed to be large as well. This is a place where the staff and owners know the locals and lovingly greet their guests. My only downside was that our server was largely AWOL. So, if you want a unique and happy dining experience, give this a shot. If you want quiet formality, eat someone else because this place is not for you. Sorry, no photos. Left the phone in the room on the charger. :(
Be the first to Replyexcellent food in a deliberately noisy dining room
Food and service were very good. We had the Dametra Insalate, followed by the Greek Moussaka, baklava, and Turkish coffee. Portions were well judged; ingredients tasted very fresh. (Having said this, I'm used to ground lamb in moussaka, which wasn't used in what we were served; the menu says the dish includes "ground meat," an oddly vague description.) Tables are jammed together in a small, resonant front room. Management deliberately jacks up the noise level with live musicians who use amplification needlessly. Conversation stops of necessity; diners' attention to the clamorous performance is virtually coerced. Despite the unpleasant level of this deliberately generated noise, the excellent food redeems Dametra Cafe. Apparently, take-out can be ordered: thank the goddess you can have the food without the shtick.

We've eaten here a few years back and so we decided to try them again. My wife and I shared the Dametra Royal Combination and she had a salad after. I had the lamb shish kebabs. The lamb was very good but the rice was a bit on the dry and hard side, definitely not like the pilaf style that I was expecting so subtracted one star. Overall, I'd go back but I should have sent back the rice. The service was very good.

Our good dinner experience started when we called about 5 hours prior to our reservation asking if we could come earlier as we had skipped lunch and the manager worked to fit us in. On arrival, they were doing everything they could to make customers happy--changing tables for people, accommodating groups, and so on. Clearly customer focused! Similarly, the table service was friendly, helpful, and efficient (and thankfully we did not get the now ubiquitous "how are those first few bites" which I have come to loathe). Food was excellent. We had the platter of dips with spanakopita and dolmathes which was excellent with the warm pita bread. Moussaka was very good and the salmon with saffron sauce was perfectly cooked. And then there was the atmosphere! When the guitar player started up at around 6:30 the first item was a loud everybody join in Happy Birthday for one of the guests and it just got better and better from there. Next thing we knew, the staff were playing drums to accompany him, lots of couples were dancing in between the tables, and the manager/owner/maitre d' made the dinner for a young family beside us by dancing with their very young daughter and kissing her hand afterwards. We left full of good food and with a warm glow from the wonderful experience.

Outstanding food in a fun atmosphere! The wait staff played music and had everyone dancing. The food was excellent. Love this place!

The calamari appetizer was very good. Light coating and fried just right. The royal combination includes Hummus, Spanakopita, Dolmas, Baba Ghanouge, Tzatziki. It came with toasted pita. Would come back.

It had awesome food and had a band of 3 people. 1 singer/guitarist and 2 drummers. This was the best place in the world!!!!

We stayed the weekend and chose Dametra Cafe for dinner because we wanted to try something different from our norm. We started with a Greek appetizer, Dolmas. My husband had steak and I had a shrimp kabob. The portions were huge! We wanted to try Baklava for dessert but told our waitress that we were just too full for dessert, but she was so sweet and brought us a sample of it for us to enjoy! The waiters played music and sang and we had a lot of fun!
Be the first to ReplyVery enjoyable Innovative twists to Mediterranean standards.
We really enjoyed sitting outside around the corner away from Ocean Ave in the sunshine. The food was very good and generous portions. We loved the very innovative style of the Greek Salad - which was huge. This is not a Greek restaurant but clearly more Mediterranean with a heavy Middle Eastern flair. Service drove us crazy and as this was March at 3 pm - it should have been better. Don’t be in a hurry and plan for at least 2 hours even for a light lunch. Would we return - Definitely if we had an outdoor table and the time.
Be the first to ReplyGreat lamb
Outdoor seating with patio heating right on Ocean Ave by the shops was great. Staff was friendly and live music available. The lamb on the gyro platter was delicious. Kids enjoyed the burger, but lasagna was subpar. Pita was good.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous place, great evening for food and entertainment. A must for the area.
Went on the walk around the town and come across this place. It was sensational. Staff, entertainment, food and even the boss spoke to us. 100% recommend it. Was packed so booking would be advised.

Wow. This place is a must.
We walked by Dametra one evening on our way to another place for dinner. It was lively - everyone up and dancing, dinners and drinks on their tables. So we swung by the next day to make a reservation, and met someone who said they come everytime they visit Carmel. I now know why!
Service, drinks, food - this place has it right! And enough love music to get you in the spirit - and out of your seats dancing!
I had the veggie plate, mainly because I couldn't make up my mind and the dish comes with a bit of everything. It was great! The only critique is that the falafel was a bit dry.
We'll be back!!
Takeout Picnic, Fabulous!
We ordered hummas & pitas, plus a chicken shawarma sandwich. Sandwich was delicious and big enough to split. It came with a nice portion of greek salad, tasty dressing and garlicky sauce. Yum! Tender pitas and creamy hummas. Staff was friendly and helpful, (plus masked up) Food was ready in 10 minutes and nicely packaged for a picnic lunch. Restaurant is charming inside, can't wait for covid to be over so we can dine in.
Be the first to ReplyDined on Christmas Eve
My daughter and I dined here on Christmas Eve when we visited Carmel. The food was great but the fun atmosphere made our evening. They had a Greek band playing Christmas songs that the whole restaurant was singing! We loved this place!!!
