Second visit here, typically a very solid food stall in Swan's market. Historically, one of the best Japanese curry restaurants in the east bay. While the curry was still delicious, prep time was excruciating long (around 20 mins) for my katsu curry plate and I saw only two or three orders ahead of me. Quality of the rice this time was also disappointing. Quite cold/room temp and on the hard/dehydrated side. I have had good experiences here before, will likely give it one more chance in the future.

Mmm that curry is just creamy and sweet enough to pique your palate. But, the best feature is just how rich Dela's mixture is. Katsu was crispy and light, but just not the centerpiece of this dish. Would love to eat more of these guys.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a decent Japanese curry place.
Did takeout recently, and boyfriend and I ordered the tonkatsu curry and omu curry. The curry itself is pretty good, it was definitely tasty and nice on a colder day. We enjoyed it, but were also hoping for a little more kick or something. The whole black beef part of it wasn't really standing out to us, it kinda just tasted like the curries we've had at a couple spots in Japantown. The pork and egg that we had on top our curries were good and cooked well. If we came back we would definitely order those again. Overall it was positive, the only thing that was a little disappointing was that the shredded cabbage that came with each dish did not seem fresh. It was too bad because it would've been a nice touch to offset the saltiness of the curry...but we ended up not eating it. Would suggest as a quick and easy option if you're already in the area.
Be the first to ReplyWe got the katsu curry, veggie curry and fruit sando.
Overall was pretty good. Food came out fast. Curries we're very rich and flavorful. Portions were big. Taking off a star because I wish the pork was more tender and better quality. Enjoyed the fruit sando, the bread was qq - wish they cut off the crust.
Be the first to Replyi friggin love japanese curry.
the black curry at this spot is has a more subtle, deeper umami taste, and it is incredible. i friggin love black curry. i got the omu curry with a side of spicy fried chicken. a side of moist, tender, bubbling hot spicy fried chicken. the side dish almost overshadowed the main attraction. almost.

Not a fan of Japanese curry but my friend convinced me to try this place and I was surprised how good it is . It is located inside Swan's market but it is a little bit hidden because their sign is small . I got the Katsu black curry because it seems like the safest option . It was great . The chicken was tender , the curry was flavorful but not so buttery , which I don't like from other curry shop . The service was quick, you order, take a number then they will bring the food out . Definitely recommend giving this curry shop a try when you are in Old Oakland.
Be the first to ReplyParking can be tough, but it is so worth it.
I'm a fan of the Katsumi curry, but picked up a kara age currry and a e-bikes curry too to bring home for dinner tonight. Going to be really hard not eating the onion rings omw home.

Decided to try this place out since we were intrigued by the black curry! It's in a nice market in downtown Oakland but can be a little hard to spot in it's back room spot. I was happy to find a vegan/vegetarian curry with some lightly fried veggies on top. The mushroom-ey curry was good but a little salty for my taste. When you mix it with the sweeter veggies (like squash) and rice it balances out. Might have been nice to have some tofu or other protein option for vegetarians as well - maybe we'll have to try the omelette next time! My partner liked his chicken katsu but it's not his all time favorite. Great solid option though and will probably give it another try in the future!
Be the first to ReplyNice idea, nice little menu, but could be better executed.
I've been there several times so far. The veggies that came with the veg curry were sopping with oil and were inedible. The veg curry itself was tasty, but a little too sweet/sour for me. I prefer the standard, lighter-in-color, more savory-style Japanese veg curry. The person I was with really liked the tonkatsu curry. I tasted it and the non-veg curry is better than the veg, more savory, and with a richer flavor. The egg salad sando is good, but the 2nd time I had it the entire crust was left on. The first time I had it, the side-crusts were removed, and the back crust was left on, which made for a more authentic Japanese sando experience. The milk bread is slightly rubbery. The egg salad itself is light, creamy, and has a good flavor. The fruit sando is so-so. It's tiny (it's half a sandwich), too much crust is left on, there's a small amount of cream, and barely any fruit. The fruit sando in Japan are way superior. Since the owner is Japanese, I'm surprised that the fruit sando here aren't better and more authentic. I'd skip them next time and stick with egg salad. The 2nd time I had the fruit sando, the bread was chewy and slightly dry on the outside. For these sandwiches to work, the milk bread needs to be light, tender, and super fresh. When done well, a fruit sando can be angelic. When done mediocre, they're not really worth eating. The mochi donuts, when hot and fresh, are fun and tasty and worth trying. The matcha cream is a good and necessary accompaniment.I'd give the veg curry another try, but I was really turned off by the veggies that were saturated with oil. Blech. I tossed them all in the compost bin and they're probably feeding the grapes in Napa right now.
Be the first to ReplyThe owner of the former AS B-Dama space here at Swan's
The owner of the former AS B-Dama space here at Swan's Market has repurposed this stand into a new concept called Delacuro Curry, which not only specializes in black curry dishes but also offers a handful of apps. While it might look sludgey and off-putting to the uninitiated, black curry is actually the result of lots of caramelization and is therefore luxuriously thick, rich, and even sweet. It goes well with anything that Japanese curry usually complements, whether katsu (fried cutlet) dishes or omurice (creamy omelets stuffed with rice). Indeed, I ordered the katsu curry. The katsu (a fried Berkshire pork cutlet) just melted in my mouth, with both the perfectly lightly-crispy coating and tender meat creating a pleasant kaleidoscope of flavors and textures alongside the rich, slightly-sweet black curry sauce. A helping of rice was a great way to soak up all the saucy, yummy excess.Although I enjoyed AS B-Dama immensely and am sad to see it go, I'm delighted that there's still a high-quality Japanese option here at Swan's - one that's authentic as it gets, when compared to my many trips to Japan.

Protip: You can ask them for a sample of the sauce before you order.Curry sauce is a bit on the sweet side, but in general the flavors and quality of food here are good.I wasn't a fan of the fried ebi, i liked the large shrimp, but the hot sauce seemed out of place. Probably would have been better served with curry sauce.I tried a friend's egg salad sammie, and that was really good. I regret not buying one togo for later. The thick asian style butter toast was so soft and pillowy. and the egg salad had just the right amount of cream so it was light and fluffy.I would come back for the egg salad sammie, and maybe skip the curry...
Be the first to ReplyDela Curo Curry specializes in Japanese curry that is good
Dela Curo Curry specializes in Japanese curry that is good but left me wanting more.Located in Swan's Market, Dela Curo Curry is one of many shops in a food hall. However, it recently benefited by getting a mention in the Michelin guide as a restaurant to visit in Oakland! As mentioned earlier, they are known for their Japanese curry which has a black color to it that is a little more thick in texture because of the dark roux-sauce that is used to prepare it. I appreciated that it had a deeper umami flavor. I did have it with the omelete and pork tonkatsu which were both well cooked. However, there was definitely something missing. Perhaps it was a bit more vegetable pieces or dressing on the side salad? I could understand that maybe they didn't want to detract from the flavor of the curry, but something extra in this regard would have been helpful. There was also a lot of mentions for the fruit sando which was basically a cream filled sandwich with fruit. I really enjoyed the cream which was a light fluffy texture that was perfect against the fruit. However, the bread felt a little rubbery to me especially at the end pieces. Therefore, I was overall just okay with it.The service was pretty great. We came by as they were finishing up and so they offered to pack us up a few samples of their egg sando (also pretty good except for the bread). In terms of parking, it can be difficult depending on the time of day. If you are lucky you will find street parking!Overall, while there was a lot to appreciate at Dela Curo Curry, it just misses the mark in terms of being amazing...
Be the first to ReplyThis is real deal Japanese curry.
On my first visit I was picking up curry for a friend and did not get any for myself which was a decision I continue to regret. On my second visit, we came for curry to celebrate said friend's birthday. That's when I discovered just how good this curry is (even though I had already been hearing it for awhile). One bite in, I was a believer.Dela Curo is a simple stand inside of Swan's Market but don't let its humble home dissuade you. If you are a Japanese curry lover, you must come try their uniquely savory black curry.
Be the first to ReplyI was craving Japanese curry and stumbled upon this
I was craving Japanese curry and stumbled upon this restaurant on yelp for a few weeks already and finally gave it a try.I got the Katsu Curry and Mochi Donut. The katsu was extremely moist and fried perfectly. The sauce was definitely different in looks and taste-darker than the usual curries I have tried and a bit on the sweeter side which can get some getting used to.The matcha sauce that came with the mochi donut was not as sweet as I expected which is a plus.Overall, this restaurant is worth a shot to try.
Be the first to ReplyI'd give this more of a 3.
5 stars, this curry spot was recommended by a friend for having an interesting black curry. I ordered the omu curry (lightly scrambled egg) with a side of tonkatsu. The serving size was ok, barely enough for a meal with the a la carte order of tonkatsu in addition. The egg was a really nice consistency however it was a little flavorless though it was nice with the curry. The Tonkatsu was OK, I didn't find it outstanding in any way but it was in no way bad. I'd say this is something I'd try once and would still prefer homemade curry.
Be the first to ReplyA really solid curry spot.
Katsu was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The black curry they're known for is very flavorful. There is a *generous* portion of rice that you probably won't eat all of! I also really liked the pickled plum that came with the dish, added another layer of flavor to the bites.
Be the first to ReplyTheir black curry reminds me more of Korean jajang sauce
Their black curry reminds me more of Korean jajang sauce than Japanese curry, but not complaining as it's very delicious. ย I've had the fried chicken curry, shrimp curry, pork tonkatsu curry and the Chicken katsu sandwich. The curry is very light and mildly sweet. ย I feel like I could eat this many times a week and not get sick of it because of its delicate flavor. ย The fried meats were all tasty, but I've only had takeout here so often its not as crispy compared to eating it there. ย I personally liked the fried shrimp the best. ย The chicken sandwich comes on milk bread which I loved, but I thought overall it was a tad bland. ย I think the slaw could have used a little more seasoning.Definitely recommend checking out the curry if you like mild subtle flavors.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend and I only ordered the mochi donuts so I'm only
My friend and I only ordered the mochi donuts so I'm only basing my review on those however they were definitely the perfect texture for a mochi donut. The donut itself was a bit Bland however the matcha cream that it comes with on the side ties it all together. the cream itself was very light and airy so it didn't feel super sweet at all, but i definitely want to come back to try the sandwiches. overall the donuts where a perfect texture and definitely unique from other mochi donuts I've had.
Be the first to ReplyThe service was really quick.
ย The prices are reasonable. ย The curry sauce was really flavorful. ย The fried veggies were a tad greasy but hey, what does one expect from fried food? ย The outdoor dining was really convenient. ย They bring the dishes to you, and you just return them to the area across from the counter. ย Only minus for Swan's Market is the bathrooms are locked, and the code I was given by the staff didn't work.
Be the first to Replytl;drCurry sauce is unique and very good - worth trying for
tl;drCurry sauce is unique and very good - worth trying for the sauce alone. I can't say you'd be going here for great quality meats, but the curry sauce more than makes up for it!I've gone back twice now, and intend to keeping back!
Be the first to ReplyI honestly found myself craving this week's after I had it
I honestly found myself craving this week's after I had it and I think that's how you know something is good. I got it to go but I think next time I'll try and eat there. These onions rings are amazing they remind me of funyuns but better. They were soggier when I got home but it was still really good. The Katsu curry was so so soooo good. It also comes with a small side of pickled veges. The fruit sando was the best part. The milk bread was nice and thick, the cream and fruit were sweet but not overly sweet. Would return again!!

Delicious! We got only the curry platter, comes with shredded cabbage, rice and the curry. We will return, the taste is definitely addictive!
Be the first to ReplyTonkatsu curry - big fan of the black curry flavor.
Could've used more curry. Tonkatsu was fine, I've had juicier and more seasoned tonkatsu. Loved the pickles.5 stars on flavor, but the amount of curry given, as well as the lukewarm temperature of the curry, drops it down to 4 stars.
