🤮 1/5 - poor service and rather disappointing experience

Booked Engawa for my wife’s birthday dinner. We both really like Omakase and have tried various restaurants in London and also visited Japan for 3 weeks prior to the pandemic so we’ve had some great authentic Omakase experiences in the past. Our favourite Omakase restaurant in London is Kikuchi which we’ve visited plenty of times but unfortunately it was shut at the time for holiday. Read some reviews about Engawa so decided to book it instead. We had a table booked for 7pm and were seated promptly and given menus. We both knew we’d go for the 5 course Omakase with the sake pairing and upon ordering we were asked about allergies. They advised that the dessert contains nuts and when asked if they can swap it for something else or give my wife a nut free dessert that this was not an option, the restaurant only had one dessert on the menu and aren’t able to do anything else. We were disappointed to be told that they couldn’t accommodate a very common allergy so it wasn’t a great start. My wife therefore had to go for the 3 course Omakase menu. The sashimi was great and some of the side dishes were well prepared. However, the rice used for nigiri and the small tomato mozzarella katsu dish was genuinely unpleasant (and that’s a nice way of saying it!). It was extremely mushy, all stuck together and really claggy, it’s the sort of rice you sometimes get from prepared sushi rolls at wasabi or itsu. My wife is Asian and has been eating rice her whole life, I myself eat a lot of sushi and it was genuinely some of the worst rice I’ve had. The squid nigiri was really poorly prepared, it was so tough and rubbery, clearly had not been tenderised and you’d have to spend some time chewing it. We’ve had squid nigiri many times and it’s usually lovely but it was really was not great at Engawa. The sake pairing was however lovely and we enjoyed this very much. When my dessert arrived (which I could have but not my wife due to her allergy) it was a nice touch they added a candle. However as it was her birthday and not mine it was just a bit unfortunate. The waitress said that although my wife can’t eat the dessert, at least she can blow out the candle which seemed like an odd comment to make but I guess she wanted to lighten the mood. When she served it, it was 8:25 and she informed us that she needed the table back in 5 minutes. I was surprised and asked if that meant I had 5 minutes to eat my dessert and then had to leave and her response was yes. Now I understand that there are reservations made, however, surely they could have told us this when we arrived and also planned the food to come out earlier and not serve dessert 5 minutes prior to the next booking? I was appalled by this to be honest, we’ve been at the restaurant for less than 1.5 hours and spent £400 which was frankly a really disappointing and bad dining experience. Service was poor due to the inability to accommodate for a nut allergy which frankly isn’t uncommon and them telling us we had to leave when dessert was served. Also the food certainly did not match the price tag, I am genuinely shocked by how poor the overall experience was and would certainly not go back or recommend it to anyone. If you want a great Omakase experience, you don’t find this at Engawa.
