I had high hopes for celebrating my 75th birthday with my family. But I was very disappointed: Starters = OK. In-between course: wild garlic risotto not creamy enough. Main course: Total disappointment: fish portion extremely small and dry, gnocchi far too hard, not fluffy. Not acceptable for this price! I will not visit your restaurant again or recommend it to anyone, unfortunately.
A real restaurant gem in the middle of Pasing
The evening at Essence was a very special experience. We were in the "normal" restaurant and had a 5-course meal with wine accompaniment. The service was excellent, always present and very friendly, but never intrusive. The selection of dishes (approx. 3 per course) has something for every taste - unfortunately that doesn't make the choice any easier 😉 The components were cleverly combined in each course, presented beautifully and served beautifully, for example by pouring the sauce on at the table. The wine selection was impressive and more than suitable for the dishes, each wine had a very special character and was very multifaceted and exciting even on its own. Our sommelier also explained and presented them well. The wonderful evening was rounded off by the great ambience and the very stylish and harmonious decor. The Essence is a real gem and only a few minutes' walk from Pasing train station. I'm looking forward to my next visit and many thanks to the entire kitchen and service team!
Gourmet lounge at its best
Since Essence in the west of Munich has been one of our favorite restaurants for several years, we were curious to try out the new gourmet lounge. The new concept offers an exclusive gourmet menu of 5 courses or more, created by chef Phillip Schnabel, in a stylish ambience. We started the evening with the arrangement of Alpine caviar, accompanied by the current house aperitif, a Campari yuzu spritz. As always, very harmonious and a good introduction to the menu. The gourmet menu opened with a sensational amuse bouche of poached oyster with a “pearl” of oyster mousse. For me it's one of the tastiest oyster variations I've had the pleasure of enjoying so far. This was followed by Julius Brantner's still warm bread with five different types of butter. The first course was the organic Happy Foie Gras, with pulled Breton crab, blood orange and pistachio. Not only a feast for the eyes, but also extremely delicious. For the second course, Amaebi Dim Sum, we ordered the optional Carabineiro. The dim sum was a real taste explosion and the carabineiro was of top quality that I had previously only known from Sicily. This was followed by the excellent wild-caught turbot from the Vendée and, as the main course, the wonderfully tender 30-day dry-aged beef with fine Barolo jus. The friendly and warm boss, Ms. Roch, treated us to the right wines to match the courses. The finale was a refreshing pre-dessert with donuts and sea buckthorn, the main dessert - an artistic tower of fruity rum pot, dried fruits and smoked ice as well as the fine petit fours. We were completely thrilled and can wholeheartedly recommend the Essence restaurant and the Gourmet Lounge. Many thanks to the service team, the Roch family and the great chef Phillip Schnabel.

Gourmet menu - go and enjoy "Gourmet at its best The new gourmet concept - gourmet lounge with a menu made from high-quality ingredients impresses with top service, kitchen performance and beverage accompaniment. The amuse bouche - a Gillardeau oyster no. 2 in reference quality with a pearl of oyster mousse impressed with its freshness, expressiveness and appearance. Julius Brantner's top-quality bread was accompanied by an excellent selection of butter - normal, smoked, salted, tomato and lovage. The first course was already a highlight - foi gras accompanied by crab, pistachios and 2 sauces, including a lovely fruity, slightly sour blood orange sauce, a visual and taste delight. It continued at this level. Ama Ebi Dimsum was delicious - complemented by an add-on - Carabinero in top form served pure - a delight. The wild-caught turbot impressed with its perfectly developed flavor. and harmonious ingredients including Perigord truffles. The main course, Old Cow - another highlight - offered an amazingly tender, perfectly presented meat and enormous depth thanks to the 2 ideally matched sauces. The cheese plate that was also ordered offered a good cross-section. The pre-dessert - doughnuts and sea buckthorn - had a special acidic kick. The rum pot fruit tower - again top craftsmanship in the smallest of spaces - offered a diverse new taste profile thanks to a tobacco ice cream. The final petit fours included individual menu components and rounded off the successful evening. A big compliment also to the young sommelier Lennart for the expert guidance through the menu and to the hosts Daniela and Daniel Roch and their team and the master chef Philipp Schnabel. One can only hope that many more guests will be able to enjoy this great menu. The kitchen performance does not have to hide behind 2 star restaurants."
Simply always excellent
We have been to Essence many times in the last few years for different occasions (birthdays, our weddings or just because) and we have become loyal fans! Fans of the outstanding cuisine, the pleasant, classy but also casually cool atmosphere and fans of the always very charming and competent service. We just wanted to say thank you and "keep up the good work!" We will definitely be back soon!
Tweezer kitchen with little light and lots of shade
You experience big fluctuations in the quality of service, cuisine and management in Essence, which has now been in existence for 10 years and is located in the middle of a residential area. Interesting: Hardly anyone from Munich or the surrounding areas knows it. We were there for New Year's Eve dinner. In addition to the amuse bouche, there were 2 fish courses, 2 meat courses (one cold and one warm) plus dessert. It is a tweezer cuisine, visually very nicely presented. In our opinion, all courses had good to strong acidic notes but clearly too little depth in the taste (the oomph was missing) and the counterpart to the acidity was not present. The portions are very small, you shouldn't come hungry. The dishes were only lukewarm, but this seems to be becoming more and more 'state of the art' in this segment. A lot of show but little substance on the menu: Avruga caviar is not caviar and is a cheap product, the lobster consisted of chopped meat with different textures and tastes that could not be defined. The truffle for the Iberico was a tasteless black truffle that was not sliced but rather grated. There is a lot of stinginess here! The service at our table in particular can be described as sub-standard for this level. We had a person with gluten intolerance at the table, which the waiter completely ignored twice. Complaints about this are loudly negotiated with discussions at the table. The manager, who noticed this, did not come over to sort it out. She spent half the evening examining the music system, which alternated between music and a staccato knock. At the end of the bill: 198 euros per menu is considerably too expensive! Many things would have to be completely changed. The price of the wine accompaniment also seemed much too high to us. I can say that in Munich there are much better culinary options for this and less money, plus more on the plate and really ambitious service. For this reason - I am ignoring the health consequences of gluten-containing components that were described as gluten-free - we will definitely not go there again.

An excellent evening where everything was perfect. We had requests for changes to the menu, which were dealt with very well. You also have the option of swapping individual courses from the two menus (one of which is vegetarian). The reception was very friendly and the restaurant's interior was very attractive. The individual courses and the additional dishes were beautifully presented and tasted extremely good. The wine list offers a large repertoire from different German and foreign wine regions - there is something for every taste at fair prices.
