😒 3/5 - Flea Street Cafe Review

It was my wife’s birthday and she chose Flea Street Café for celebration.
We will be joined by a daughter. So it is a simple matter to make reservation for three. Not so fast
“That is a Saturday and we are all booked.”
Okay we will do it the day before. What is the corkage, for we like to bring our own wine saved for special occasions?
“It will be $45 per bottle.”
Mmmm. I think we will drink it at home beforehand.
“We require proof of vaccination and a photo ID before we can seat you.”
We are vaccinated and will bring the certificates.
“For reservation we require a deposit of $50 per person.”
That is unusual, but we dutifully paid it.
“To protect our staff, you must bus your own used dishes in the tray provided.”
No problem. We did as told.
“We have a staffing system with no front/back distinction. For that we charge a mandatory 20% minimum service fee.”
OK, whatever is right.
When the check came, we were not credited with the $150 deposit. We had to ask for it and it got changed without explanation or apology. Since the deposit is supposedly mandatory for everyone, it is inconceivable that the cashier simply “forgot” about it just in our case.
With many loyal and faithful customers, Flea Street Café can arguably make up their own house rules without affecting business. What I experienced was mandatory above-average service charge with well below-average (if not illegal) service. I did not enjoy my visit there. There are many fine local restaurants which would welcome my patronage. I will go to those in future and leave Flea Street to its loyal fans.
BTW, the 2014 Ridge Monte Bello we drank at home beforehand was spectacular! It saved the day.
