End of an Era
Forliniโs, one of Manhattanโs last remaining red sauce joints that first opened in 1956, has officially closed, owner Joe Forlini confirmed to Eater in an interview. The building that houses has also been sold. Earlier this week, Forlini told Eater that the restaurant, located at 93 Baxter Street, near Walker Street, may close on April 18 โ or sooner.

We have missed good NY/NJ Italian food and this place fulfilled our every wish. It was our first visit, and Joe and his staff made us feel like the longtime regulars all around us. Everything was perfect: The convivial atmosphere, the food, the cocktails! Don't miss the homemade ravioli or any of the veal dishes: My saltimbocca was delicious, even if one filet was slightly more tender than the other. Oh: Do not skip the homemade cheesecake. If you do, it's your loss! Authentic, old-school Little Italy: Go before this era passes by completely.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but bad experience
While we enjoyed the food itself - we had the chicken parm and stuffed shrimp - the ambiance was lacking as it was brightly lit (like a classroom) and the tables were too close to each other.
However, our main disappointment was that just as our food arrived, a 30-35 person birthday party entered, occupying a singular long a table that traversed the entire back half of the restaurant; this COMPLETELY changed the evening and took away from the experience.
I cannot believe this restaurant 1) allowed a party/table this large without renting out the entire room to them and 2) didnโt notify any other guests about this before this. The room became louder than a concert hall. And the staff was MIA as they catered to people who arrived a 60 We felt bad for all the families eating around us.
Maybe we just had the wrong type of expectations for a Saturday evening. Perfect for NYU college student birthday party but not for a date night. Food was delicious but itโs a shame everything else was below expectations.
Beautiful restaurant but a lack of personality waiter
I only rated this high because of the very pleasant owner and the taste of the food. Otherwise it was one of the worst experiences we had because of the waiter who thinks he was so smartโฆ We have been to NY for so many times and we have never experienced this. The waiter himself was also originally from a diffrent counrty but i think he has some issues with the counrty that we are from. First of all when he came to the table my husband asked for a wine list and he said you will ask for that later let me get what you want to eat. Then when i asked about a vegetable on the menu he gave a smart answer. He said I need to experience different tastes from different cusines and leave just eating my trafitional food aside. I was shocked with his answer but I chose not to be on the same level as he was! Then when my husband asked for the wine list again then he said leave that to me I will bring a glass of wine for you. Then he brought 2 glasses of the house wine which was ok but the attitude was terrible. Then we wanted to have a bottle of wine and again with the same smart mouth attitude he gave us a lecture by saying we should never ask for a house wine if we want a quality wine. First we did not ask for a house wine and secondly we had had house wines that were very delicious before. And at the end of the meal first we didnโt want to have a dessert but then wanted to see the menu. And this time again with his smart mouth attitude he told me those desserts are way different from the desserts that we are used to eat back home. I do not want to either write your name or your nation mr smart mouth waiter but you need to bring yourself together to be a better person! We have been to many countries probably close to your age and have never experienced this type of attitude! I do not want to under score this beautiful restaurant because of his lack of personality! But I hope the people eho visits this restaurant mever have to put up with this man!!!

We love Forlini's!! The staff is very friendly and attentive. We were in NYC for 3 nights and had dinner there twice. We actually had a reservation at another Italian restaurant on the 2nd night and were not happy with the atmosphere. I called Forlini's and explained we had been there the night before and wondered if they could get us in that night..YES, without hesitation. We jumped on the subway and were seated within 30 minutes of the phone call.
Food is excellent! service is amazing, Jack and Walter are both phenomenal servers! The accommodations that they can do for you and the personal service you receive will make you feel like part of their family. Highly recommend the trip to Forlini's; you will not be disappointed
Loved my meal
Stopped in for dinner after reading other travellerโs reviews. Itโs a retro and I imagine it must have been in business for decades and decades. Itโs very cozy. After looking over the menu decided to go with The Gourmet Dinner which includes a sampling of nearly their entire menu - hot antipasto, homemade pasta, entree, dessert and a shot of limoncello. One of my favorite meals during my birthday trip to NYC.

The waiters were so friendly and helpful. They are very patient. We are not from here and they helped us a lot. By far the best meal we have had this trip! The food is so delicious and is true Italian.๐๐
Be the first to ReplyThe reason why Forlini's has been open for so long !
There is a reason why some restaurants have been around for so long, it is because they have great food and service. Me and my wife had late lunch early dinner today for the first time at this longstanding establishment. The food is true authentic Italian,
with good size portions, and the service is like visiting family for Sunday dinner.
Forliniโs is on my list of favorite restaurants in NYC.
Disappointing
Was expecting much more from this restaurant. Came here after the Immersive Van Gogh exhibitor Pier 36. Food was just ok, nothing to write home about. Service was at best moderately attentive. Price was moderate and the manager/owner appeared at the end of the meal to buy the table a free lemoncello. Not enough to make up fore mediocre food and service. Will try another restaurant in Little Italy.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food and great people
When we wandered in we met and shook Joeโs hand. I loved it right from there. We got there early and had the place to ourselves. By the time we left the restaurant was full of (it seemed to us) locals . Joe knows everyone and they get a warm greeting. The atmosphere is exactly what I love. And I havenโt even gotten to the food yet.
My hubby and I shared so we only tried a few things. The burrata with roasted peppers was wonderful. Dinner was Panzerotti Piacentina and finished with a cannoli. The only place we have had better Italian food is in Italy and I am not sure it was better.
We loved everything about this place and canโt wait to come back. See ya next year Joe!
The best authentic Italian Restaurant in NYC!
The best authentic Italian restaurant in NYC! The dishes are delicious, the owners and the staff are always nice and friendly. The whole experience transports you somewhere, to North Italy ๐ฎ๐น.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing traditional Italian cuisine
My wife a I visited on May 2021 and we loved the food, the place and the great attention from the staff.
We highly recommend this restaurant if you like traditional Italian cuisine.
We recommend the lobster special for two and the canoli for desert.
We definitely are going back when we return to NYC.
