Not Rushing Backโฆ.
What to say about France Soir. Iโll start with the good, which is the food. The scallops with saffron sauce was creamy, rich and delicious. The veal chop with wild mushrooms and calvados was cooked to perfection. However there were a lot of things that let the night down. Seating was very cramped. It felt over-booked and over-crowded. Perhaps this explains the service. Side-dishes did not arrive until several of our party had already finished, one of the mains was the wrong order (but was never rectified), and wines were served in the wrong glasses. Some, or all of this, could have been chalked up to an off night but disappointingly, there was no attempt to address any of these things. Overall, the atmosphere is lively and fun and the food is good but one thing Melbourne is not short of, is fabulous places to eat so Iโm not sure that the food on its own is enough to make me return.

Unbelievably noisy and understaffed service. Food was good but it was so hard to get a drink. We asked for the red and it came after two of our party had finished their mains.

Would love to come back here again. Absolutely amazing staff who obviously take pride in taking care of the customers. Beautiful food.
Be the first to ReplyAnother great lunchโฆ
Another excellent lunch at France Soir.A place to see and be seen.First rate food including scallops with a dash of wasabi as starters and pork cutlets for main course.Always listen to the daily specials which has some very original dishes.A big plus that its BYO for lunches on a week day. Finally very attentive service.Regrettably there arenโt more restaurants like this.

France Soir has been skating on its reputation for decades. I dont care about being placed at a table in between the toilet & the door to the kitchen; I can ignore the smug wait staff; I can forgive the ridiculous wine selection; but the food here is simply awful: A Pate en Croute that tasted of feet. A handful of gristle in a watery gruel they tried to pass off as Beef Bouguignon. We will never return. A much better bet is either the wonderful Entrecote in Greville St or L'Hotel Gitan in Commercial St. Both serve consistently excellent French fare - and are a lot friendlier to your wallet.

Food is great but the experience is spoiled by the wait staff, especially if you don't tip. Had the unfortunate experience of the worst of the waiters serving us. No assistance with the food descriptions, no assistance with the wine selection, no topping up of our glasses, nothing other than bringing us what we ordered. Despite this he created a scene when we didn't enter a tip when paying. More embarrassing for him than us as we returned the attitude in spades at which point he stormed off muttering in French. Spoiled what was a good meal and ensured we won't be back, especially with so many other French options in the area.

This is a typical French bistro. Food is good typical French rich sauce heavy in butter and cream. Service is good and has a good atmosphere however seating is very cramped. Found it overpriced for a French bistro meal. To top it off there was an automatic 10 per cent tip if youโre paying by card that is added to the transaction. I found this a little bit scurrilous as I was not given the choice.

Birthday dinner with my partner. Everything was good up until our mains. We arrived at the same time as a party of 4 sitting across from us (they had their entrees and mains and left before us while we were waiting for our mains). We ordered four entrees, two mains, two glasses of wine and a cocktail. We only had three entrees and one main. Our drinks arrived first as usual. The entrees were great, we had the special scallop dish with beurre blanc, oysters and escargot - all delicious. It was about 45 minutes of waiting for our mains before the waiter went to check on the kitchen. We knew it was a busy night and some delays may happen. We were okay with that. We waited another 15 mins to be served one of our mains - entrecote. My partner followed up with our second main and fourth entree. The waiter told us he didn't put through the second main because he thought we didn't want it. He also said our fourth entree is up on the bench waiting and can be served now.... one hour later. At this point we didn't want to wait any more and asked for the bill. As my partner was paying, another waiter came to clear our table. I was still eating. There was wine in my glass. He did not ask us if we were finished. He just came and cleared our table. This is what disappointed me the most. I rang the next day and spoke to a manager, told him what happened. In the conversation, he says "we have a rule if you ask for the bill, we clear the table." Even if that were the case, the waiter did not ask if I had finished my meal. It was just horrendous.

Really enjoyed our very early dinner here. Tucked into window table watching the world go by. Great French standards - steak tartare, steak frites - amazing scallops, loads of bread and butter. Really good service - great value - canโt praise highly enough.

Not a bad place to get a pricey steak and chips with a wine I guess. Or a duck l'orange if you like it Can sit at the bar or at a table Busy restaurant but very good food and wine and cutlery and decor

Recommended for a farewell dinner and was not let down. Absolutely packed to the rafters on a Monday night and the food was good and so was the service, Highly recommended to visit when nearby.

Had the French onion soup and scotch fillet steak which was fair - nothing fantastic ; rather lacking in taste .The waiter that served us, after being very rude, had the audacity ask us for a tip . Will not be returning there .

Truly wonderful traditional French food Terrine to die for Snails,Lambs Brains & Duck ! Followed by a Creme Brulee and washed down with a Cognac Suburb service and all reasonably priced Plus I got to sit under a photo of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood! Thanks for a great night.

Fabulous food. Says it all! On a freezing,y col, wet day, the mushroom soup was truly amazing. The mains were wonderful, the vegetables perfectly cooked. It was lunch time, on a Monday, and the restaurant was fully booked!

My Scotch Fillet was virtually inedible. Every mouthful was gristle and fat. Great waitstaff, delicious oysters but fail to understand the astoundingly poor Scotch Fillet.

All round terrific, great food, great service and a fantastic vibe. We first visited this restaurant in the early 1980โs. Itโs truly amazing and fabulous that it has maintained such a high standard for so long. Congratulations

What a fantastic place for lunch!Superb food and service. We really liked the Spanish Anchovies for starters and the Lamb Cassoulet for mains.Always a vibrant place for lunch.Plus you can BYO wine some days of the week which is a huge plus.

Really disappointed with our first visit to this well established and successful restaurant. The place was packed, there were only two waiters who did a great job but were unable to provide the service they should have due to the number of tables they were serving. The food was OK but not great and parking was a nightmare. One positive was that it was great to hear the waiters talking French to each other which added to the Parisian bistro atmosphere. We felt packed in, struggled to get served and there was nothing about the experience that would make us return.

It has been a long time since we have been to France Soir and we are so glad we returned. Todayโs meal reminded us why this was a favourite restaurant. We did not have a booking, the restaurant was exceedingly busy, people queuing at the door yet they seated us almost immediately and as we watched, we noticed that no one was turned away. The food was exceptional. The service polite and attentive. They were very busy so we waited a while between courses and at the end to pay, but we can forgive that. It is always good to know that here at France Soir, when you order your steak โblueโ, it comes blue. Cooked to perfection. Merci beaucoup! Looking forward to returning very soon.
Be the first to ReplyPoor Service and less than ordinary food
I really wanted to enjoy the experience but I left extremely disappointed. The place was really busy, you are seated on top of each other and therefore uncomfortable and cluttered. The waiters were shouting, not paying attention, throwing menus at us and the service was mediocre at best. No mention of the specials no recommendations and they didn't even bother to answer our questions properly. More importantly our food was ordinary and overpriced. I don't mind paying for quality but what we were served was not quality. I paid $32.5 for one and half langoustines, with an Asian type dressing. The Safran scallops we ordered included a sauce that had no substance or depth of flavor. The tiny scallops floating in the sauce looked like they did not belong there and it seemed like something that the corner fish and chips shop would have rejected. The $32 charcuterie was just cold meats a tiny slice of terrine minus the rillette even though you can clearly see it in the menu photograph. The rabbit we ordered consisted of 3 circular slices of terrine / sausage type meat that we were not really appetizing or tasty. I didn't finish my meal. When I was asked by a waiter as a token gesture if we liked everything I told him I did not like the rabbit and the response was a blank look (I think he was just to busy to care of what I thought). The steaks were OK and the bรฉarnaise was the star. After that experience do you think we ordered desert? - No we got out as quickly as we could and hightailed to MacDonald's for a chocolate Sunday. I can forgive poor service but not poor food. I really don't see the attraction. This was a fine restaurant once upon a time but not more.
