A bit disappointed of our experience last night.
We've been here about 4-5 times and it's been great in the past but this last time was very mediocre. None of the food had a wow factor except the dessert. The wine pairings were not complimentary of the meal choices, very surprised by this. Maybe it was just an off night but we were pretty bummed since we were out celebrating and wanted a special meal, especially for the price. The bread served was cold with rock hard butter which was also interesting. We received the bill and saw a 7% SF mandate which is higher than other restaurants we've been to in SF and upon researching it, it's at each individual restaurants discretion what the % is and not mandated by the city or state rather something business owners need to pay but seems the cost is being sent down to the customers. Giving 3 stars because our server was pretty good and the presentation was beautiful.

Loved every minute! They made us feel very special since it was our anniversary. The food was great and so were the drinks. The entire evening was incredibly enjoyable. I would recommend sitting at the bar if you can. The service there is impeccable.

Excellent service. It was so special for my husband's 55th birthday.

Excellent option for a special occassion night out or if you want to treat yourself to an excellent dinner, ambiance and service whenever you are able to. Excellent quality and great welcoming service from start to finish. Food was delicious; I cannot complain about anything. If you come here you will not be dissapointed; very professional, attenative and excellent establishment. The take home cake they provide as a generous favor was so delicous! so photo. Boris has a great personality and provides great service. Thank you Gary Danko Team!

Worth every penny. We had reservations for a birthday. We arrived a bit early, and sat at the bar to get a drink. We were promptly seated in a corner booth. So kind of the staff to give us such great seats! The sommelier helped us to pick an excellent bottle of wine. We ordered the 4 course tasting menu -- all of which was incredible. I would absolutely return here for another special event.

Last night was a double celebration at a destination restaurant, Gary Danko. The ultra service was one of the best we ever had, starting with the wait captain, serve was Miguel, top service. The food presentation and tastes magnificent. Started with a warm goat vegetable tart. The surprise was my entree, quail, expecting one bird, got two, dessert was warm butter cake. My friend, Lauren dinner was risotto with loster, filet of beef and profiteroles. It was Lauren's birthday, and one hundred days after my kidney transplant. Planning my return trip!

We made a reservation weeks ahead for Galentines day dinner and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was elegant yet inviting. The service was truly exceptional. Unlike some restaurants, they didn't rush us through our meal, allowing us to savor each moment. The staff was attentive and professional, offering assistance and recommendations whenever needed. Now, let's talk about the food! While everything we tasted was delicious, some dishes truly stood out (Branzini, Seared filet of beef, baked chocolate souffle). Appetizer: Lobster risotto (4/5) - It was just a tiny bit salty but other than that it was great! Not to mention the portion of this dish was very generous. Branzini (5/5) - The branzini was cooked to perfection. The crispy skin gave way to a tender, flavorful fish. Seared filet of beef (5/5) - Cooked exactly as requested, the filet was incredibly tender and bursting with juicy flavor. baked chocolate souffle (5/5) - An absolute dream come true! It tastes like chocolate could. Trio Creme Brulee with Assorted Cookies (5/5) - The trio offers 3 distinct flavors (chocolate, original and passionfruit). My personal favorite was the passion fruit, which offered a refreshing and vibrant contrast to the sweetness. Highly recommend! I would definitely go back and explore more of their menu
Be the first to ReplyLet's get right to the point.
This is one of my two favorite restaurants in the entire United States (and I've eaten in fine dining establishments in all 50 states). I'm not even going to attempt to describe the food. Let's just say no matter what you order, it is delicious and prepared perfectly. Their cheese cart, to me, is the best thing on the menu. It is a true cheese cart where the fromagier will describe the 15 or so cheeses in as much detail as you want. If you are having the cheese as one of your courses, you choose four that are served with the appropriate accoutrements. Just fabulous! OK - so you're thinking, "I've eaten at other restaurants that have amazing food. What's so special about this one?" In a word, pampering. Have you ever been pampered? I mean truly pampered. At a restaurant? Well, at Gary Danko they pamper you from the moment you walk in until you leave. And, most importantly, the pampering is not stuffy nor pretentious. You always feel so comfortable here. Service is always spot on. Want 15 minutes with your cocktail before the first course arrives? Say so and it happens. Want more time between courses (or faster service)? Say so and it happens. Yes, I've been here several times before. This is the place I chose for my birthday dinner this year. Absolutely no regrets.

We were here 10 years ago and here we are again to celebrate our Anniversary. This is always a special place for us. We were expecting valet parking but they did away with that for a few years already. So make sure you factor in parking before your reservation as street parking can be difficult and note that metered parking is still enforced even after 6 pm. As we entered, the front staff greeted us with Happy Anniversary which was nice. The ambiance was warm and inviting. A bar is located in the middle, with table seating located on both sides of the restaurant. As we sat, we were served an Amuse-Bouche, literally 'amuse mouth' in French, which is simply a savory appetizer before a meal. We then ordered a four course meal and the great thing is, you are not limited to the order of the courses and can order four mains or any combination of courses from the menu if you so choose. The food is always presented beautifully and the staff are always attentive and courteous. Here are the prices as of 3/18/23 - 3 Courses $122, 4 courses $150 and 5 courses $170. The following were excellent choices - Seared Filet of beef, so tender and melt in your mouth, Duck breast was great and the sides really helped bring out the flavor of the duck, Roast lobster was fresh and delicious with the potato puree, Lobster risotto was so good and the oysters with caviar was excellent but the portion size was small with 3 tiny oysters & caviar. The lamb was served just the way I like it. However, I wish it was served with something sweet such as mint sauce or a fruit compote. For our cheese course, we chose 4 cheeses from the cheese cart. My favorite was the orange Shropshire blue cheese which was soft and delicious with the grapes. At the end of our meal, they served us a plate of petit fours with the words Happy Anniversary on the plate, together with a candle. Perfect for a photo op to mark our Anniversary milestone. Also, every guest gets a beautifully wrapped cake to go. Note - They add a 7% SF Mandate to your bill. Overall, a great fine dining experience to mark a special occasion. Will definitely return to mark our next milestone.
Be the first to ReplyThe service there is amazing.
Everyone was so pleasant and we spoke to Gery at the end of our dinner and we had the best time talking to him. We were the last table at the restaurant and we did not feel rushed or like we were holding anyone up. The food was perfect as always and the timing was great. This was my boyfriends and friends first experience and we will be coming back. Food was perfectly timed and portioned.
Be the first to ReplyI went to Gary Danko with really high expectations, and I
I went to Gary Danko with really high expectations, and I was slightly disappointed. Between 4 of us we ordered 2 three course and 2 four course meals, so there was plenty of variety to try from. In appetizers, my favorite was the lobster risotto, it was creamy with a perfect velvety sauce and soft but slightly al dente. The beef tartare was mediocre and lacking that briny taste. In main course, the roast lobster with potato puree was delicious, and yes, they scoop out the meat from the shell. The seared tuna and herb crusted lamb were good, I liked the lamb more. A big disappointment was the filet of beef. With the reputation of this place, I was expecting a "wow" response after my very first bite. Instead, it was just ok. I've had better beef at less fancy places. The sauce that came with the quail was flavorful, but overall, I did not enjoy the dish as the quail itself was dry. I liked the venison, but again, I have had better. The sides on most of these dishes were good, but that's not what I look forward to at a place like Gary Danko. In desserts, I liked their cheesecake. We also tried the baked alaska and baked chocolate soufflé. We were celebrating my friends birthday, so they served us small assorted desserts, something like petite fours, on the house. The ambiance is very cozy, perfect for date nights, or celebrating special occasions. The plating and service were 10/10. We were greeted very well by both our maitre d and the host. Making reservations over the phone is easy. I definitely recommend making reservations sooner instead of waiting until the last minute. They did not have valet service the day we went. Street parking can be a hit or a miss, but there are some nearby garages if you dont mind a small walk. Overall, we had a good time, though I wish I enjoyed their food as much as I enjoyed the service and experience.
Be the first to ReplyClassic special occasion restaurant.
Their formulae has worked for many years and I'm glad they didn't make post Covid changes

Gary Danko offers fine dining that consistently measures up to expectations. After my third visit here I continue to be left "wowed", full, and happy. This time we asked to dine at the bar and it was so much fun! DeAnna was such a treat as our bartender/server/and she was so fun and lively! I will always recommend this restaurant. Course presentation, price point, atmosphere, and how customizable the menu can be makes this establishment wonderful time and time again!

Came here for a friend's birthday and the service was amazing. We started off with champagne, wine and caviar. I opted for the 5 courses cause I was very hungry but I was soo full at the end and couldn't finish everything so the portions are definitely good here. My friends and I got different things so we can try as much as possible. Some of the standout dishes were risotto, and chocolate souffle.Everything was good, I would come back for special occasions because of the whole dinning experience and amazing service.

I've never had a bad meal or experience here and the service is exceptional, it always puts me in a festive mood no matter the time of year. Making reservations is a breeze on Resy however I do miss the convenience of Valet parking they used to offer, hopefully they bring it back in the future. The Michelin star is well deserved and over due and I appreciate their consistency in service and the quality of food especially when so many other places are cutting corners while still charging Michelin star prices.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
Every time we come in we have the best time! Ambiance is great, and we meet new people at the bar each time too.

Ate at the bar, loved taking with the bartender, who was very knowledgeable about the food and wines. Loved our dinner there. Looking forward to when we can eat there again.
Be the first to ReplyWas our best meal in San Fran.
Not only was the food great but it had the best service I have ever had. Peter was our main server and he was very personable, attentive, and not over bearing. The entire staff was polite, helpful, and made us feel truly special. Would absolutely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyI just find the high reviews for this place confusing.
The service is definitely some of the best, hands down, but the food was uninspired and sometimes downright bland. And it's a very high price tag for bland. The cheese choices are good, some dishes were fine, the same vegetables seemed to be reused in every dish, but nothing blew my mind. Dinner for a moderately sized group with a large variety of dishes, and at no point did anyone exclaim about their food - just a subdued "good" when asked how their meal was. Meanwhile, we had lunch at the Italian homemade the day before for a twentieth of the price, and that place totally beats this one on taste on every level.

Cheers to the guy from Upstate New York on earning a Michelin stars. I'm always so proud to see people from the area of my upbringing go so far. Normally, your goal should be to make reservations here months in advance, but we managed to sneak into the bar on a first-come first-serve basis on a Saturday night around 6:30. We considered ourselves lucky since there are only about 6-8 seats at the bar and whether you order a 3-course, 4-course or 5-course meal, you can expect very little turnover. We opted for four courses each ($145/person). They started us with a generously-portioned amuse bouche of asparagus soup.First portion: - Seafood Bisque with Roasted Butternut Squash, Celery Root, Fennel, and Fines Herbs. - Glazed Pacific Oysters with Osetra Caviar, Leek Fondue, Zucchini Pearls, and Lettuce CreamThe bisque won this category. Simply elegant.Second portion: - Seared Sea Scallops with Parsnip-Pear Puree, Leek-Caramelized Apple Compote, Sage, and Spring Vegetables- Roast Maine Lobster with Potato Purée, Asparagus, Edamame, and TarragonThis one is a tie. Both delicious in their own right.Third course: - Filet of Beef with Soy Mustard Glaze, Eggplant-Shiitake Marmalade, Potato Gratin, Haricot Vert and Pearl Onions- Lemon Pepper Duck Breast, Duck Hash, Celery Root Purée, Bacon Braised Endive, and Rhubarb-Cippolini CompoteBoth the filet and the duck were cooked perfectly. The duck was more on the medium side as opposed to medium-rare, but same great flavor.Fourth course: - Baked Chocolate Soufflé with Two Sauces- Trio of Crème Brûlée with Assorted CookiesI actually loved the assorted cookies more than the crème brûlée itself. Delicious soufflé, one of the hardest desserts to execute. This has to be the best restaurant in San Fran. Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere.

Excellent service made me feel full and content afterwards, unlike my husband can do onto me. anyways, pricey food obviously as you can see the plethora of suggestive looking ahi seared tuna. My husband was drooling all over it, can't help to feel jealous L.O.L. the way he plowed through it like a hungry animal can make anyone a little frisky. too bad they don't have a certificate on their little website haha. Came in hungry left hungry as well, but hey that's the price you pay fine dining foie d'oie éclatant~ Though I would greatly prefer ketchup with my Tuna as a homage for when I was young (that's symbolism for you literature types). anyhow, great stuff.I want to specifically talk about the private dining experience my husband and two other friends of ours had (also a couple). the seating arrangement were beautiful and lush and the lighting had a romantic spin to it, though a little gaudy according to our mutual friend. we had a zesty time getting to know eachother while using the food as a sort of icebreaker. Heck, we even switched "plates!" We had to be real quiet so we won't be *that* annoying guests making a hoot and holler of the place. ;) at the xenith of course being a woman I came out dead last and the full bottle of wine was great. My hubby looked 10 years younger! Bubbling and spicy time with the four of us and the business is top notch. thank you so much I feel so vitalized.

Gary Danko not only consistently delivers fantastic cuisine and an unparalleled experience, but for a high-end establishment - they treat everybody equally. This in itself is very important in today's day and age.Whether it is a special night for you and your loved ones, you're a San Francisco tourist, you're having a business dinner or are you just wanting to treat yourself, they do not disappoint. You will absolutely get what you pay for and everyone will treat you right. My husband and I are San Francisco residents and this is one of our favorite places in the world. So far our favorites are the steak, Lamb, tuna, salmon, and quail dishes. They are also very respectful to dietary restrictions.
