Great pizzas! A bit pricey but good quality crust and good options. There's not a lot of room and we had to sit outside on the street but I'd go back for the pizza

The vibe here has a trendy atmosphere and rustic charm, but the experience doesn't fully live up to the setting. Walking in, the host stand is way too close to the door and you're awkwardly standing outside and having to move out of the way for people going in and out, not to mention how loud this place is. The food is good, but not memorable and lacking a real "wow" factor. Service was passable, though not especially warm or attentive. The biggest miss? Cleanliness. For a place with this level of hype and pricing, the lack of attention to basic upkeep is hard to overlook. Value is likewise uneven: the food isn't bad, and many dishes are well worth trying, but the combination of portion sizes, high pricing, and inconsistent service and cleanliness means that you might come away feeling that "good" is what you paid for, not "great." Overall, it's a spot with potential, but not one I'd rush back to.

We ate at Gjelina yesterday, and while the food and atmosphere were great as always, our server XOCHITL was flat-out TERRIBLE. She acted like she hated being there. Every interaction was cold, forced, and indifferent. At a restaurant of this caliber, that kind of attitude is unacceptable. I understand the 20% mandatory gratuity and great servers deserve it, but service this bad just takes advantage of it. One server like Xochitl can drag down the entire experience at what should be one of LA's best spots.
came here for Sunday brunch, there were three of us.
Our one friend was running late coming in from Orange County. We asked to be seated and said we would order something immediately an appetizer and some cocktails while we waited for a friend and they said absolutely not we had to wait till everyone in the party was there. There were several places to sit at the high top bar and tables in the back, but we have to stand and wait. We asked if we could sit and enjoy a drink while we waited at the hightop bar and they said no we could enjoy a drink and stand against the wall. The food is delicious. I have to give them that. I just think tone and the way you speak to. Someone is really important in customer service.

One of the great restaurants in Venice! Also on my favorite block in the neighborhood where other great retailers and restaurants are. I personally enjoyed the oyster mushrooms and their crudo plates. I am not a big fan of pizza but their pizza really hit the spot!

"Sorry, can't administer the "Heimlich maneuver" because it's not on the menu." Allergies (and preferences) be damned, if you don't want their food as they envisioned its perfection, they won't change it. And for the pleasure of asking, they will condescending state that they simply decline any alterations. But they will patronizingly offer to guide you to something they think you could and should eat. I think the last person who did that for me was my mother when I was in the single-digits-years old. I can't comment on the food. We left. And expecting this review to change their operations would be laughable. I hear they are famous for it. Remember when restaurants used to treat you well because they wanted your patronage? I do. It was the day before I went to Gjelina.
We got seated on the rooftop deck.
The weather was beautiful and vibes were great. We ordered the lamb pizza, mussels and clams and maple bacon. Our server was really helpful and attentive at helping us choose our dishes. We really enjoyed the clams and mussels. Pizza was pretty good too and goes really well dipped in the clam sauce. Bacon was not bad but I think we would like it to be a little bit more crisped but flavor was pretty good. Overall a nice restaurant

Very nice dinner our server Jordan was very tentative and kept service flowing. We ordered several small bites that were coursed out perfectly. I recommend reservations they were able to get us a table after a brief wait atmosphere and food was spot on for a great night with friends!
Damned, it was good.
Wife & I had an amazing brunch. Service was outstanding & the setting in their courtyard patio made the whole meal feel special. The burrata was incredible... especially paired with peaches & balsamic. The ham on it was lovely... the smoked salmon with goat cheese was another standout. The nine-grain pancake surprised us... it worked as a savory element alongside the cheeses, almost like a perfect Bellini-type bite. The bรกnh mรฌ was also very good & balanced. Overall, Gjelina delivers on every level...
Absolutely delicious.
First ate here a month or so back. Have been back since and will go again. I was surprised to see the reviews here. No way this is a 3.5 star spot. Maybe 4.5. We had house cured chorizo pizza, the oxtail pasta and the cacio e pepe. Loved the cacio e pepe, the oxtail was also delicious. Looking fwd to our next visit
Good for pizza and wine on Abbot Kinney
The pizza you can find in LA, so good. Also nice spot, recommend to book in advance as it is busy everyday! I got lucky enough to get a table walking in
Absolutely Disgraceful โ Zero Flexibility, Especially with Kids
We came to Gjelina with high hopes and four hungry kids โ and left completely stunned by the arrogance and inflexibility of the staff. All we asked for was one simple dish: plain pasta for one of our kids. No sauces, no sides, no special ingredients โ just plain pasta. And you would think we asked for something outrageous. The response? A firm no, followed by an attitude that made it crystal clear: this place doesnโt care about accommodating families, let alone children. The staff was rude, dismissive, and completely unwilling to help. No compromise, no basic human decency โ and the manager? Somehow worse than the staff. Condescending, cold, and uninterested in solving anything. We werenโt asking for a five-course meal for picky adults โ we were trying to feed a child. The fact that Gjelina couldnโt (or wouldnโt) make a basic adjustment says everything about their attitude. This restaurant may have hype, but beneath the trendy exterior is a place with zero heart, no hospitality, and a shocking lack of customer service. Avoid if you value kindness, flexibility, or just treating people like humans. Especially if you have kids โ Gjelina clearly doesnโt want you there.

Horrific experience. The staff are part of a scheme with John. He knows the owner and invites people to this restaurant, be super careful.
Fine Dinning in Venice, LA
Excellent choice, very vegetarian friendly, very pricey. Smooth service. Reservations essential. Do not miss the warm pate on baguette.
For a special occasion
I had a very good meal with interesting choices of dishes. The ambiance is quite classy but maintains a young atmosphere. A little bit pricey but the quality of the dishes is superior
Decent bakery
I bought baked goods from the bakery. Did not dine there. Everything I purchased was fresh but I wasnโt bowled over by anything. Food is solid but not spectacular.
Not worth the attitude
Food is generally good, but the attitude of the staff is that you're lucky to eat there, the mandatory 20% tip + asking for more is obnoxious after the attitude you have dealt with, and the ego of the chef to refuse ANY substitutions (seriously, you cant put a sauce on the side) is beyond appalling. It's not worth the attitude.
Expensive food, indifferent service
Was really looking forward to my meal here but to begin they seated us on the terrasse on a cold night which was ridiculous. Secondly, the service was very cold, indifferent . Wine service was nonexistent, which is a shame as they have a nice list. Food was good but seriously overpriced. Big disappointment overall but what really hit me was the compulsory 20% service charge for such lousy service. Considering the price and the result, Iโd say look elsewhere for a satisfying meal. They did NOT live up to the hype.
Delicious small plates
We ate here on a Wednesday night. We had reservations for 9 pm, but we got there early and were seated 50 minutes early! The menu is mainly small plates, which we shared. We had mushroom pizza, lamb sausage pizza, sweet potatoes, passion fruit tart, eggplant, wine. All were delicious. Free parking is available nearby. I recommend and would definitely eat here again.
Came here Sunday lunch.
It was amazing! Started with the oysters (love the fresh shaved horseradish, mignonette, and cocktail sauce) and then moved to the Escarole salad (11/10) followed by the snap peas, steak tartare and finished with the four onion pizza! There wasn't room for dessert! The tartare lacked a little salt but we still enjoyed it. The service was top notch! The bussers were impeccable. And I loved the design inside the restaurant. Both lower level and top level.

Saturday brunch at 11:30 am - blueberry scone, Moroccan baked eggs, red little gem salad , crispy fingering potatoes Service: friendly Ambiance: modern, great vibe Price: ok Food quality: delicious, fresh and fabulous 5-stars straight!!!! Highly recommend
I had a great first experience at Gjelina.
The baklava croissant was amazing, highly recommended Gjelina. The atmosphere and outdoor garden was a great place to sit in the sun.
I went there with a group of people.
Everyone talks about Gjelina, so we decided to give a shot. Really overrated. Food and ambience. And service... there was one person covering a large area, so we had to talk to 3 other people who were trying to figure out where the waitress was... any order would take forever to be taken... really terrible service. They have 20% service included in the price, so my bet is that, nobody would change the bill to become a 15% service (which really needs improvement). So nobody at Gjelina make much of an effort to change the quality of that, knowing that they will already receive 20% for the service, being that good or bad... Do not recommend it.

Sunday brunch here and sadly there was not eggs in the building, but thats not important. We sat outside and it was gorgeous with the trees acting as shade and such rich vegetation all over. The service was spot on as our waiter described every dish in detail and was spot on. However, how was the food? Beef Tartar- very sour and acidic, but balances with the charred sourdough bread Bok Choy- garlic and little spice, probably my second favorite dish Japanese Sweet Potatoes- any vegetable with a yogurt sauce is a hit and this was not different (Favorite) Snap Peas- the mint made the dish, however it seemed lacking in flavor Celery Root- when eaten with every component it was delicious Escarole Salad- acidic and a little spicy and the almonds added a nice crunch Gem Salad- too much dijon for me Chorizo Pizza- quality ingredients, just prefer more crisp toward the middle Steak Bahn Mi- lots of mayo and don't prefer it in a bahn mi Rock Fish Sandwich- bun was heavenly and overall one of the best grilled fish sandwiches I have tried Lemon Shaker Pie- SUPER SOUR, no sweetness at all Overall, nothing blew me away, everything was good, but not great. The atmosphere, service, and quality of ingredients is what makes this a 4 star for me. If you decide to come make sure it is sunny and you sit outside.
Food is good however Gjelina has lost care for patrons.
They have a no modifications policy which I wasn't aware of. It's no where to be found on their website or website menu. Before I could finish asking if they could omit the prosciutto from a salad, the waitress very tersely cut me off "no modifications". It would be good if patrons could finish a sentence first. Omissions also feel different than modifications but it's their policy. Given Gjelina have an automatic 20% gratuity on all bills, it feels like there is no standard for patron care from servers. They don't care how they treat you since the 20% tip is guaranteed. Will skip Gjelina and stop recommending it to others going forward.

A star for that delicious butterscotch pudding, a star for our sweet server and a star for the efficient operations and ambiance, I guess but overall food is meh. Parking Ofcourse is annoying, we ordered a few breakfast appetizers, the cauliflower was the better one and we enjoyed the pizzas, from the dishes if we had to choose. Mimosas were cool, I'll say, but can def do better with food quality and taste of dishes. Happy Easter y'all!
This place is solid.
A must eat location in Venice. I had my birthday there and I was stoked! Definitely check it out, great wine, pizza and desserts.
I think Gjelina makes the best pizzas in LA.
And I should know having lived in New Haven, Connecticut, for four years. If you like our style. The crust is perfect and the toppings as sophisticated as you want or don't. Combine that with a whole bunch of scene-stealing dishes just three of which are as diverse as various fish crudo, Japanese squash, and duck confit. You might wait for your reservation but, once seated, service is always knowledgeable and attentive. I can't go often enough.

Went for brunch on a Saturday after being highly recommended. Looked busier from the outside but it was not really that busy. Had a res so was greeted and seated right away. Hostess was friendly and sat us upstairs inside by the window. Good seat since it was a sunny but cooler day. We ordered coffee and some other stuff. Coffee was warm, maybe a little more than room temperature, so that was a turn off. And when I got a refill, I realized why it was not hot, because the coffee sits in a thermos pitcher. Food was fine, nothing spectacular, but good enough to finish. As for service, let's just say we got served. Very AI impersonal and I guess when the 20% service charge is automatic, they don't have to try. On to the next...

Went for dinner with my son and husband for my husband's birthday. Guess we should have checked reviews first. We dine out a lot and never have experienced such pretentious, rude, poor service especially considering the high prices and mandatory 20% service charge. Our waitress (tall with short dark hair) was cold and rude. First, as stated on the menu - they literally will not change or substitute anything - so if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, forget about any accommodation. For example, there is a vegetable that has a yogurt sauce on top - they could not put it on the side for someone in our party who can't eat dairy. If something is sprinkled with nuts, they can't withhold the nuts or put them on the side. The waitress was unapologetic about this, and made us feel It was inappropriate to ask. My entree was served before any other food came out. After waiting for 10 minutes with no other food coming out we pointed it out to the waitress and she looked at us blankly and sarcastically said something like - "so?" and " Did you think all the food would be brought at the same time?" I said it got cold while I waited for other food to arrive - can they heat it up ? She said, "no". Very blasรฉ and unapologetic. She finally said they could remake it if I wanted - of course making me feel bad about wasting food. But otherwise the dish would have been cold by the time everyone else's food came. Overall a very unfriendly, impersonal vibe. We would never have left a 20% tip (as we regularly do in other establishments) for the awful service we received, but we were left no choice. By the way, even with the mandatory 20% tip added to the check, they still include a tip line. The food was creative, but not outstanding, and definitely does not warrant ever coming here again.
Super trendy spot in a super trendy area.
Still feels somewhat relatable and dressed down. Sat outside and people watched, lovely spot. The pizza was delicious, each bite was complex and different. Each bite was its own experience. The service was very casual but really attentive and responsive. Eat here!
Be advised this restaurant DOES NOT accommodate food
Be advised this restaurant DOES NOT accommodate food allergies or sensitivities. They do not have this listed on their website. I have had the privilege of eating at some of the best restaurants all over the world and have never been refused an accommodation due to a food allergy. The staff was smug and rude. And for this I paid a mandatory 20% tip. There are many fabulous restaurants in LA, unfortunately this is not one of them. Do not waste your time or money here.

The food here was delicious! I loved the agnolotti & the pomodoro + burrata pizza. They didn't have Margherita which is my favorite from the takeout section. My sister loved the beef cheek pasta as well. Only think I didn't love was it was super super loud even though we sat on the outside patio area. I also didn't love the auto 20% service tip... waitress was a little rude, so I didn't love that

I was really looking forward to eating here and sadly it was extremely disappointing. Food and ambiance was great but service was exceptionally terrible. Don't know our waiter's name because he never introduced himself. Given the number of great options nearby, I would not return. Would consider takeaway though.

This was the best Rockfish sandwich I've ever had!! The salad simple and fresh. The salad dressing was delicious. I would recommend this place to everyone visiting the Venice Beach area.

Located on Abbot Kinney, parking around here can be hit or miss. I got lucky and found street parking nearby. Walked in without a dinner reservation and was seated about 15 minutes later. The ambience of this place is really dark, there seemed to be only a few light bulbs overhead for a pretty sizeable restaurant. I literally read my menu by candlelight! lol Aside from the poor lighting, the menu itself was difficult to read because of the small print as they had so many items listed, the offerings are plentiful. The waitstaff was helpful in offering their suggestions. We ordered a few plates to share, the portions were decent, and the food was pretty good. Nothing stood out to be spectacular but overall a good meal with good variety of flavors...escarole salad, chanterelle mushrooms, wood roasted prawns, and the warm date cake for dessert.
THE GOOD: Super cool space with sexy lighting and great
THE GOOD: Super cool space with sexy lighting and great overall vibes. Our pizza was also outstanding. THE BAD: Immediately upon arrival we were "greeted" with cold/rude attitude from the hostess and flatly told to "go stand against the wall"... Next came the table service that was completely rushed and impersonal. No greeting, no small talk, just literally asked "Do you want anything to drink." No "hello", no introduction, no personality. The really frustrating thing is that you are charged a flat 20% service fee, so there is obviously no incentive to provide good service. Other than the pizza, the food was only OK. The roasted brussel sprouts were nearly raw, the pasta was just dried pasta (not house made) and was just OK. For the kinds of prices they charge, I would expect a better food experience. THE BOTTOM LINE: Do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and just order their pizza for takeout.

Ambience ~ Good Service ~ Our server was so kind, answered all our questions, and checked in on us multiple times throughout the dinner. When we ordered, were immediately told the kitchen is behind (our reservation was at 9pm) Food ~ The Food was good, but overall it was overpriced for my book -- it is on Abbot Kinney so you have to expect things to be higher in price. It's great for a 1 and done and move on to another place for better value. We ordered: *4 Onion, Goat Cheese Pizza & the Lamb Sausage Pizza - both awesome, but very greasy and little too much salt for me. *Japanese Sweet Potato - My FAVE! *Orrecheiette - had a good beef flavor, but I felt it had a little too sweet of flavor at the end reminiscent of ketchup...hubby described it as "adult spaghetti o's" in flavor *Selection of Charcuterie - Classic and delicious *Braised Short Rib - fall off the bone, very tender, but the dressed arugula was TOO SALTY *Prawns - good, but nothing that special *Oyster Mushroom - TOO SALTY, nothing special, skip this *Miso Bok Choy - The miso was good on the veggies and I will make this at home for MUCH LESS
Delicious food. Very satisfied.
Delicious food and prompt and pleasant service. We had a mix of veggie appetizers (cauliflower, Japanese sweet potatoes, carrots, mushrooms). Muchsrokms and Japanese sweet potatoes were our favorites. My main dish was heirloom squash dish, which was fantastic. I will happily return. It was very busy at 7:30, but empty at 5:30.
JGELINA Restaurant is a gem
Fantastic vibe and imaginative menu. Vegetarian friendly. Great wine options & delicious food. Chanterelle mushrooms were sublime and the scallops were succulent & memorable. Even though it was raining we ate on the beautiful back patio, protected from rain by umbrella & warmed by fire pit. If you can nab a table, do so. You will be delighted.
Donโt miss this gem
Amazing, unique flavor combinations. Really great service, awesome atmosphere/ambience, and an overall great foodie experience. We had the roasted fennel, agnolotti, pork chop, and escarole salad. All wonderful! But definitely get the warm date cake for dessert.
Poor and very expensive gastronomic experience
We chose this restaurant because it was close to our hotel and because it was recommended to us by good friends that enjoy nice restaurants. The service and ambience are good but for a restaurant classified in the bib gourmand of the Michelin itinerary the food is quite poor. We ordered three dishes to share between the two of us: a steak tartar (classified as a main course) but which comes without any side dish and only on top of toasted bread (โฆ..). The steak was poorly seasoned (it had no flavor) and was missing, for example: egg yolk, mustard and pickles. Mandatory ingredients in a steak tartare. Furthermore, the meat looked like it had been chopped in a machine and was pasty (which is an insult to a tartare steak, tipically chopped by hand). Additionally, we ordered a seasoned bean dish. Although the beans were of good quality, the seasoning was nothing innovative: parsley and onion with olive oil. The dose is tiny. In other words, it was nothing more than a weak adaptation of the typically Mediterranean (namely, Portuguese) black-eyed peas. Finally we ordered a duck confit. This was good and well seasoned. For these three dishes and two beers we paid 140 dollars including a mandatory 20% tip. I repeat, $140 for three dishes, two of which consisted of a small dose of absolutely basic and uninnovative beans and another of poorly seasoned steak tartare with poorly cut meat. This restaurant being part of the bib gourmand is an insult to other cheaper ones with better service and a Michelin star, such as the fantastic State Birds Provisions in San Francisco.
Sad really
I wondered if the compulsory 20% service charge would affect the service. It does. Ordered a tuna salad, inedible as it tasted only of salt. Changed for a tomato salad, asked for no salt. Visible salt when it came. Then (afterwards for clarity) I asked the waiter and then the manager for the salad without salt. Reply: we donโt alter any part of the menu. Left hungry. Not the usual American service which deserves a 20% tip.
A classic
A Venice Beach classic. We start with a spectacular Kampachi and then delight us with the burrata and close with a pizza accompanied by cherry tomatoes. Highly recommended.
A great disappointment.
A great disappointment. We were recommended this restaurant. The waiters were nonchalant and generally grumpy. Ordered tartare which was served on black toasted bread. Smallest possible portion. Got lukewarm water without ice. Got a bill with a default 20% tip. Completely incomprehensible that they got such good reviews - maybe they have reviewed themselves?
Rude Staff
Delicious food but very rude staff. Unhelpful. Abrupt. Feels like they are doing you a favour. Add 20% compulsory gratuity with worst service weโve had in LA.
Good Food Bad Service
I had al albacore salad and meat balls. The food tastes really good. The decor is weared. Alternative . The negative side is the service: waiters are arrogant, feel untitled and treat you like you are nothing. The fact the restaurant automatically adds 20p cent to the bill for service might be one of the reasons of the poor service: should the waiters tips depend on the satisfaction of the customer they would probably behave differentlyโฆ.
Absurd mandatory tip
Avoid exaggerated prices and obligatory tips specified only at the time of the bill. It's not written anywhere and I don't know if it's possible to impose this. Fixed tip of 20%
Went here with a group of friends (7) on a Sunday night.
We were unable to make a reservation online, but you can make a reservation over the phone. I would highly recommend making a reservation as it does get very busy. We were seated on their back, outside patio. It was lightly raining outside, but the had umbrellas covering most of the seating area. It was just a little cold outside. Their patio was very cute and secluded. The food was very good. All of my friends had gotten some sort of pasta, as you cannot get their pasta for takeout, only their pizza. I had the cacio e Pepe and it was very good. A little bit different than a traditional cacio e Pepe dish. My friend had gotten the agnolotti and she thought it was very good. The server did say that it was a smaller portion of pasta, but it was about the same as the other dishes. While she was eating her pasta, she found a stick of thyme in the pasta. It was a decent sized stick and she just wanted to make the kitchen aware of it, as she had almost swallowed it. When the manager came over and assessed the stick, they were a little condescending about it. They were telling us it was just a stick of thyme and it was a part of the dish. When my friend pushed the issue further, they felt the need to explain that thyme was a herb and it was no big deal. How they handled the situation just put a sour taste in my mouth. Overall the food here was very good and I also very much want to try the pizza, as they have many different options that all looked good. It was also be nice to try in better weather to fully enjoy the outdoor patio.
