Great China Berkeley Reviews from The Last Year
Everything about the food and service was amazing!
Everything about the food and service was amazing! Everything was greasy as well. We had the egg flower soup, spring rolls, combination fried rice and almond chicken. Everything was tasty and is one of the top Chinese restaurants in the area.
Pretty good restaurant.
It can be hard to get a table when Berkeley is in session. Go early or late.

I went to Great China for a work lunch and we all got a few appetizers (dumplings + chow mein) and our own lunch specials. I got the Mongolian beef and did not regret it. All were delicious! It was really busy so the service was a bit scattered but overall they were very pleasant and as helpful as could be with such a large crowd.
A HUGE disappointment.
My son graduated from Cal a few years back and we've always had good service and high quality meals at GC when we visited him during college. So when my son got married this weekend at Berkeley we wanted to treat our family members a nice, traditional Chinese dinner the evening before the wedding. We made a reservation for two tables - 12 & 11 ppl respectively and were all looking forward to a special, celebratory meal with PK duck, giant prawns, fish, calamari, and all other types of special dishes. Immediately when we arrived we learned that GC assigned us a table of 13 and a small table fit for 8 ppl (but they forced in 10 chairs) - because they had just seated the only other large table for 12 ppl. This forced us to change our seating assignments and had placed our prepared serving dish sizes into disarray (whether to order 1.5 or 2+ serving sizes for every dish for the table of 13 and 10 ppl). The food then arrived for the 10 ppl table, dish after dish, while the large 13 ppl table (with honored guests, i.e. grand parents, older uncles & aunties, etc.) had just one dish. After 30+ mins when the 10 ppl table was served with 6-7 dishes already while the 13 ppl table still was waiting on its 3rd dish, we had to express our frustration. Then another dish came to the 10 ppl table ... where it was so full that there was no place on the table to place this vegetable dish. I had to tell the servers to serve the vegetable dish for the 13 ppl table instead. Ugh! But when food finally started for the 13ppl table, the dishes were the heavy-carb dishes (noddle and fried rice) - traditionally the last two dishes (before dessert) that is served at a Chinese banquet-styled meal. The other signature dishes (giant prawns, fish, etc) were still missing. When these signature dishes were finally served for the 13 ppl table, we already had the carb-dishes and had to take much of the final dishes in to-go boxes. The food itself was bland and without character ... nothing as we remembered it 4+ years ago. 10 mins after we paid the bill (with the mandatory gratuity) and while we were waiting with grandparents for the cars, the manager stopped me and said they miscalculated the bill and wanted me to pay even more money. That is when I explained to the manager of how disappointed I was with their serve and with the missing quality of the dishes. The manager then shocked me with his response - "If you wanted the dishes for your tables to come out at the same time, next time you should tell the chef!" I could not believe my ears ... A manager after hearing customer complaints puts the blame back on the customer? Is there any one out there who believe that when we book multiple tables, all parties involved expect the same thing - that the dishes be served at or near the time you serve each table? Is this really the customer's fault for not making it clear at the outset that a large party with multiple tables hope to eat the same dishes at/near the same time? Or that when you serve dishes at a Chinese banquet you should expect signature dishes to be served BEFORE the heavy carb- dishes? That's when I got upset and asked to speak to its manager ... The GC rep. disappeared for 10 mins then came back to say that his manager "left" and cannot be reached. When I asked to speak to the manager the 2nd time, the GC rep. disappeared again for 10 mins, then came back to say that the manager said there's nothing they can do. When I asked them to put the manager on the phone, they refused. Frustrated with the whole experience, I did pay the revised, higher tab. This is because I did not want GC to blame the people who were serving our tables for the treatment and experience we had (and deduct their pay). This is a systemic problem ... an issue between operations and the kitchen. This is a managerial problem that the owner(s) of GC should not take lightly and should deal with. Or other long-time customers of GC will simply stop coming back. We do not deserve to be treated this way - and charged an extraordinary sum for it.
Great China offers up high quality traditional Chinese
Great China offers up high quality traditional Chinese dishes with a twist. I especially love that the food isn't greasy, which is what you often find with Chinese food. We ordered the spicy eggplant, potstickers, fried rice, Mongolian beef, honey walnut prawns, salt & pepper calamari, bok choy & shiitake mushrooms, ant climbed the tree, and double skin (not pictured). The ambiance is modern and clean, so you can dress up or down. Service is always so friendly and attentive. The restaurant is located in downtown Berkeley, so parking can be a bit tough, especially on the weekends. Definitely a spot to try!

Every dish was bursting with unique flavorful textures, served within 10 minutes of our selections! in a very welcoming Asian decor atmosphere with attentive black uniformed staff. You really need to order the Mongolian braised lamb, salt and pepper shrimp and black bean fish- soooo delicious! Meals are served in beautiful blue and white china matching the tableware. Full bar and extensive list of oolong to chrysanthemum teas available too! There is a parking lot which is only $2 per hour a few steps across Great Wall.

Passed by Great China and was brought in because of the wonderful smells coming from inside. My group of 4 went around 7, and we waited about 30/40 min to get a seat. The man at the front was very nice and friendly. We decided to get drinks at the bar while we waited. When we were ordering, the waitress with glasses abruptly cut us off, saying "I think that's enough" so we didn't decide to keep ordering more dishes. We're not sure if it's because it was a busy night or she meant to say that dishes were a lot, but it caught by surprise that a worker wouldn't want you to keep ordering. We ordered the walnut prawns (delicious, highly recommend), half duck (sauce was amazing) with buns, bok choy, and twice cooked pork. The pork came with tofu which I normally don't like, but I surprising loved it and the flavors blended well. We ended the night with the green tea ice cream with puffed rice which was very good. The food was definitely worth the wait, and I would return again to try out other dishes from the menu; hopefully the dish I wasn't allowed to try last night haha!

Food was very very good! Especially the duck! Excellent taste and combination! Service was also good! Ambiance was good! It is the restaurant worth 1 hours driving!
Food was interesting and fresh.
Nothing seemed to stand out and wow us. The service was solid, and there were a lot of people earlier than the usual lunch hour.
This place was famous for its Peking duck but I thought it
This place was famous for its Peking duck but I thought it was very dry. There was no a single piece of fat left on the skin. The rest of the food was a combination of cuisines from different regions of china. Even the waiter confessed to me in Chinese their main clientele is westerners. As such, I didn't expect a super high degree of authenticity. The prices are about 50% higher than similar restaurants in Oakland Chinatown or the South Bay. I will not go back unless my western friends clamor for it.
Good, authentic Chinese food
We went as three cousins after not seeing each other for years. The wait was 40 minutes - just enough time for a drink around the corner at the Sea Bar. Once we were in, everything was great. Seafood and pork dumplings had a good chew, great flavor, and a mild dipping sauce. Tea Smoked Duck was wonderful with wheat buns, hoisin sauce and green onions. The sauteed Ong-Choy was tasty and crunchy. The spicy chicken with eggplant was the least distinctive dish, but still good. Overall, the food was strong, service was good, but the room is noisy.
