Honestly I did. And while I do feel that the food at Hachi is definitely worth 3 stars, the entire dining experience, the price, service, the evening was best summed up as "Meh". I asked my date to pick between "Meh/Average/Good" and she too summed it up as Meh.So just to be clear. The food here is THREE STARS. 3*s. The overall experience? Meh (2 stars)I found the setup of the restaurant a little odd, the counter isn't really ideal for people to sit and interact with the chefs, there's a height differential that makes it a bit awkward, and moreover a good part of the counter is used as a clearing station for dirty dishes. Personally I always eye the counter when I expect a Omakase experience, I think I've been conditioned to expect the counter experience to be more personalable. Before we begun, the waitress asked us if we had any dining restrictions... and mentioned oysters. Now I generally really don't like oysters. In all my oyster experiences, I've only not gagged once, so with a bit of apprehension I said I'd have the oyster, raw, just to see how it'd go. My date said that she'd eat anything just "no wasabi".And so we begun. The first course was a delicate green bean... curd/mousse in dashi gel with salmon roe. Salty, a little sweet from the pea, it was interesting and quite tasty. The platter of four starters was decent as well, my date liked it more than I did. We then had a scallop, partially seared, wrapped in bacon, served on sweetcorn. I didn't get this dish at all. The scallops were sweet, fresh, and actually quite delicate. They were quite overwhelmed by the bacon. The sweetcorn? Similar flavour profile to the scallops, and while a nice contrast in texture, seemed an odd addition. The assorted sashimi platter was fresh, there was a good variety with mackeral, sea bream, flounder, and yellowtail... BUT. The wasabi wasn't fresh, and okay, I don't always expect fresh wasabi, I realise it's kind of an indulgence... AND the soy sauce tasted cheap. I can't explain this to you really. I've never, ever noticed soy sauce "not meeting my expectations", but last night, at Hachi, I did. I asked my date if it was only me, and she said it wasn't as fragrant as she expected. Now, $120 isn't a lot of money for a multi-course omakasa, but the little things. The little things need to right for the entire dining experience to be awesome. We then had a bamboo shoot dobin mushi (I LOVE dobin mushi and this one was average), followed by the highlight of the evening, the oyster. It was fresh, sweet, succulent, not at all chewy, and served with spring onions and ponzu sauce. Delicious. The next course was Tempura.... alright. One of the items was a little heavy and a touch oily, but again, not bad, just not amazing. What WAS "bad" was that the wait staff had to ask us (and the table next to us) numerous times "what course" we were at. Like, they were just randomly throwing out dishes and couldn't keep track. I say randomly, because we noticed that the table next to us received courses in a different order... and almost had their oysters forgotten. After that it was sushi. Now remember what my date said about wasabi? You guessed it. Forgotten. They were quick and willing to change it, and apologetic, but I mean. If you're asking about dietary restrictions, TAKE NOTE OF THEM. They also didn't bother to explain what fish was on the sushi, so I can't tell you much about it. The seared Wagyu beef was a little on the cold side, barely room temperature, which was odd because the vegetables it was served with were nice and hot, likely fresh off the teppan. For some reason, though every other table received their miso soup and rice with a side bowl of pickles, we didn't get any pickles (which we love, so it matters ok?). There were also momotaro tomatoes as an earlier course... but I found theirs a little odd tasting. I think they're marinated in something, and I didn't like it much. The miso soup is worth mentioning though. The use of onions gave the soup a more complex flavour, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dessert? Black sesame ice cream that was... too sweet and not really "sesame-y" enough. The sesame flavour was a... lacking, and instead it had more of a creamy sweetness. Not... bad, but I've definitely had much much better black sesame ice cream. And there it all is. Food that was, in parts, brilliant, interesting, or top-notch, while in other parts, mediocre, uninspired, or sloppy. Service, for most of the evening was friendly, earnest, and jovial... but rather inept. They felt scattered and a little directionless, and maybe needed a good floor manager to bring everything together. For the now though, I'm give Hachi 2 stars with a heavy heart. They're obviously trying to bring the omakase experience to a slightly more affordable level... but unless someone else tells me that my experience was unusual and an outlier, I'm unlikely to go back.
