Halls Chophouse Columbia Reviews
Used to be the best now is average
Halls WAS the best restaurant in Columbia, the service is below average the least two times we had dinner. When I have to get up to find a manager to clear the table and get the very very high bill that is unacceptable. I have been to the Columbia location over 30 times and used to have the manager stop by the table and thank us for coming back and asked if we needed anything. The level of service is below a Longhorns. It seems we are inconveniencing the entire Halls team by making a reservation and spending my money. The current management seems to have ZERO interest in customer service, which is what Halls used to have. From our Birthday celebration in July to the visit in September it just seems to be going down hill, fast. What used to be a special evening is now not worth the trouble to drive into Columbia. We have meet the Hall family a few times and they are exceptional young men, but the very high standards that they set into place when this location opened in November of 2018 are long gone.
Lack of protection by complexion by management.
It was my 48th wedding anniversary and I ordered the twin pork chops. The waiting was excessive in time I had to wait for my meal, the seating was right at the door and drafty, I was ravaged had not eaten all day waiting for this experience. When the meal arrived I tried to cut this meat and it was so hard and it took so much strength to cut it each time and when I bit into it was tough , dry, and seasonless didn't eat it all out of hurt and embarrassment. I let the waiter know they apologized offered free dessert which was rich and overly sugary. It will be Cowboys or Brava Zul in the future, Never Halls, my only take away was: I didn't have the protection by my complexion to assist the way I was served or reimbursed.
Absolutely FANTASTIC - both food and service!
The steaks were PERFECT! The selections of wines, scotches, ryes, etc amazing. The bread pudding was to die for. But beyond the perfect food, the SERVICE was FANTASTIC. They are attentive, perfect timing with food delivery - no one sitting there waiting while others eat. And they gave us the gift of champagne for all of us because we were celebrating a family event. I recommend them highly.
Expensive 16 oz Prime Rib just Par
On the weekend of Juneteenth 2025 and my birthday I wanted to celebrate with a Prime Rib. At the entrance desk I asked the staff if Prime Ribs were available and could it be cooked medium rare. She returned, "I have good news, we do and can cook it that way." I sat at the bar and bartender placed my order. Returned to state, "Unfortunately, we do not have it medium rare only medium well done or done." I asked, "how long do the prime ribs are prepared, hours or days?" He returned "our ribs are prepared for over several days and/or 10 to 12 days, very tasteful." I order the Medium Well-Done and it is my opinion, this selection was just average and certain parts of the meat had some flavor. Would I re-order this again; I would not. Overall I was not pleased.
The service was even better than the food!
First Halls visit & it was truly an amazing experience. Sarah was our waitress and she made the experience even better. Very friendly and a true pleasure. Greeted the table with a smile and didn't seem to stop smiling during our entire meal. Not only was our service impeccable, but the food was even better. Definitely an experience I won't forget any time soon, and I am hopeful I can visit again soon.
Aggravating Experience
When I go to a high-end restaurant like Hall’s, I expect to have professional, high-end service for the prices they charge, unfortunately, this was far from the case. We were seated right away, and it was all downhill from there. 25 minutes in, I still didn’t have my glass of wine it took 15 minutes to order. Server was absolutely clueless! My date asked for a recommendation of a wine she described and after he babbled incoherently, my date ordered a Jameson on the rocks instead. Before he left the table, he said he would get the Sommelier, great! 10 minutes later he comes back and says he’s currently unavailable. The Sommelier eventually shows up, gives her a couple of tastings and she orders one of them…in the meantime the drink shows up that the server should have known or asked if she still wanted it after recommending the Sommelier. Clueless! Before all this happened he asked if we wanted to see the meat selection, we declined saying we’d wait for our wine…he brought it anyway. We asked him 3 times about the difference between the NY Strip and the KC Strip, each time he babbled incoherently again, with obviously no clue whatsoever what the difference was. 3 TIMES we asked him! Then he would disappear for 10-15 minutes at a time. 45 minutes in we finally got to put our orders in. She had the filet which she enjoyed, I had the rack of lamb, for which I said that I would go with the Chef’s recommendation for preparation …it was tasteless and mushy, terrible! Oh, I asked for mint jelly when I ordered and only got it when I asked another server for it half way thru my meal. No biggie when taken alone, but just another aggravating factor. Bottom line is that this server(Pax) had no business being a server at Hall’s, certainly not yet, not even close! If you’re not going to train someone properly, don’t put him on the floor when you charge what you do. I have been to Hall’s Charleston any times and it was always top notch food and service, it couldn’t have been more different in Columbia.
a disappointing experience
usually enjoy Halls but this one feel short. Service was very slow and frankly unattentive - after an hour we had to ask twice to see if our meal was ready. The filet was so tough I only could eat 2 bites. We were offered a free desert, which we declined. My wife's shrimp and grits was fine but there was definitely a lackadaisical attitude we had not experienced before. It was 6:30 so they were not terribly busy.
Best dinner ever.
We were in town for my Grandsons graduation from Army Boot Camp at Fort Jackson. Our dinner was AMAZING. Service was top notch. A little pricy, but so worth it.
Houston we have a problem, Dorothy we aren't in Charleston anymore
The wifey and I love a good steak so for our special outing on Christmas Eve we decided to take the picky eater, minus the current squeeze as she was with her parents for the holidays, to Halls Chophouse in Columbia. We enjoy Halls in Charleston and when we moved to Columbia we were elated to have this option at our finger tips. Unfortunately despite a solid steak experience and the near impossibility of getting a reservation, we realized pretty quickly we weren't in Charleston anymore. For us it has always been a service issue but rarely has that been as bad as we experienced on Christmas Eve. For the wifey and I much of our experience comes down to pacing our meal well. Some restaurants do this very well, some struggle. We also don't like to be bothered, but want the wait staff quickly available if we need them. On these fronts the struggle was real this Christmas Eve. We ordered our usual dirty martinis and as the picky eater isn't a dirty aficionado we ordered a bottle of wine to share for our meal. Before the tinis arrived our waitor brought out the bottle, cracked it open and spilled our glasses. I say spilled as the wifey releaved her of her duties as it was a bit messy. While I thought odd she filed our glasses since tini time was no where in sight, I didn't mind letting it breathe. The wifey had to inquire about the status of our cocktails and shortly thereafter one of the managers presented with them. As usual a solid dirty martini....filled to the brim in true Halls style. Perhaps the last time we saw that for the evening. While we enjoyed our martinis we perused the menu though we all knew what we were getting. When our waitor came back to refill the wifey's clearly untouched glass of wine we decided to order our salads. A small wedge for yours truly, a whole ceasar for the picky eater and the wifey loves their Chopped salad, who doesn't. NO feta please, wifey doesn't like feta. Eventually the waiter meandered back when we had polished off our cocktails and we ordered our entrees. As usual the wifey and I split the bone in fillet, creamed spinach with no crumbs on top, baked potato, loaded no cheese, and the obligatory mushrooms and onions. The picky eater got his usual, a slab of filet and mashed potatoes. We sipped our wine, good choice me, and the salads arrived. All seemed right, but Houston.....we have a problem. The wifey had feta on her salad.....hates feta. Problem is, by the time we got the staffs attention, picky offered the wifey some of his Caesar and now the chopped salad was chopped from her experience and she sent it back. My wedge was great, highly recommend. The rest of our meal was pretty much one misstep after another. In true Halls fashion they swarm you with servers once the food is ready. The steaks were cooked perfectly, creamed spinach was solid but the baked potato was so cold not even the butter on top was melting. The wifey asked them to nuke it ...and I think they did but it was still not hot, like yesterdays left overs. The mashed potatoes were hot and drowning in a lake of butter so the picky eater ignored them in favor of his steak which he ate in haste. I tried to entice the wifey with mushrooms and onions for her steak but they too were ice box cold.....sent back. Almost forgot, wifey ordered the side of shrimp and grits, they almost saved the meal...highly recommend . All in all a fair experience for a restaurant we know is more capable. Haven't seen service like we have in Charleston and the food was lacking at best, but the manager did try to rectify what she could. We'll be back because we know it can be better...perhaps when we visit the picky eater in Charleston.
Very poor lunchs
Wine list not reliable as to being available. Food amazingly SLOW in coming to table. And certainly not worth waiting for. Three very bad lunches.
