Hangawi New York Reviews from The Last Year
Solid vegetarian menu.
Very generous portions for a tasting menu. Some things like the lettuce wrap salad with pineapple were fantastic, but others like the fried tofu & sweet potato noodles didn't do it for me. Would go back for the a la carte. Very inventive though, four stars for service, atmosphere, and creativity.

As you sit cross-legged in the warm and inviting space of HanGawi, you will feel as if you're in someone's home, about to enjoy a meal that feels homey and made with care. And that is what you'll get. The kimchi tofu stew here is incredible. The depth of flavor (not too spicy at all), the delightfully chewy rice cakes, and mushrooms fill the bowl with combinations of flavors and textures and nutrients that will make you feel nourished and warm. This is where you'll want to be in a rainy or cold day, or simply when you're feeling like tasting something made with love. Plus, it's extremely friendly towards dietary needs, with plenty of gluten-free and vegan items on the menu. I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the kale pancakes and the bibimbap tasted pretty standard, but the tofu stew is truly a cannot miss.
Great food and service.
Lots of choices and reasonable portions. Have been there many times
Hangawi provided an unforgettable Valentine's Day
Hangawi provided an unforgettable Valentine's Day experience that surpassed all expectations! From the moment my boyfriend and I stepped into this serene oasis, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of tranquility and romance that set the stage for a truly magical evening. The Valentine's Day menu at Hangawi was nothing short of extraordinary. A meticulously crafted several-course meal awaited us, showcasing the finest in Korean vegetarian cuisine. Each dish was a masterpiece, bursting with flavors and textures that delighted our palates and left us craving more. What truly stood out was the impeccable execution of traditional Korean dishes, all expertly prepared with a vegetarian twist. From the savory pancakes to the flavorful tofu dishes and the aromatic rice bowls, every bite was a revelation, showcasing the culinary prowess of the chefs at Hangawi. Moreover, the ambiance at Hangawi was simply enchanting. The traditional Korean decor, serene ambiance, and attentive service created the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening with my beloved. We felt transported to another world, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. In conclusion, Hangawi exceeded our wildest expectations and left an indelible mark on our Valentine's Day celebration. If you're searching for an exquisite dining experience that combines exceptional vegetarian cuisine with unparalleled ambiance, look no further than Hangawi. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
Absolutely one of my favorite vegan restaurants in NYC.
It's such a beautiful space and unique experience. The food is fresh, healthy, and authentic. I recommend getting the skewers, tofu skin dumplings, and more than one dessert! Tip: Be sure to get a reservation at least a few days ahead.
I strongly recommend Hangawi to folks visiting NYC midtown
I strongly recommend Hangawi to folks visiting NYC midtown area, it's a unique place not to miss. They serve vegan Korean food - which is great for a vegetarian like myself. We ordered the pancake platter, the tofu nuggets in black bean sauce and classic stonebowl. The pancake platter was my favorite - each flavor was delicious! The tofu dish was tangy and spicy. The stonebowl dish was the blandest - especially without gochuchang - I would skip this. I loved sitting traditional style with shoes off. Great experience!
Sitting in the Floor in My Socks
My partner and I came for the weekend mini prix fixe lunch, which is a great deal for the amount of courses and food you get! It seemed to be a popular choice with other diners as well. The starter soup was delicious and just light enough to open your appetite, and while the spicy cauliflower bites were delicious they were not spicy at all. The mushroom sizzler literally comes out sizzling but was a bit too similar to our starting soup of the day to be varied enough for me, although it was delicious. I'm not a huge fan of chocolate in general, but the chef makes sure to emphasize the chocolate flavor without it being too sweet. The plum wine, while light and yummy, also unfortunately by its nature tastes like very nice grape medicine. Seating is on an elevated platform, with holes underneath the tables to allocate room for your legs. This serves the function of a chair while also allowing you to sit on the floor. There is a coat check where you need to leave your shoes, so I strongly suggest wearing socks at the entrance. Service is prompt and reliable, and the flavors are mild and savory. Sadly, almost immediately after we left, my partner suffered some severe indigestion. We ate almost the same meal and I had no such problems. Good place for a nicer date.
YUM! I loved my experience dining here, end to end.
As a first timer, I thought the sunken tables were really unique. We didn't have to wait that long for our food to come out. It's hard to pick what I enjoyed the most, but I would say the spicy rice cakes and kimbap are tied for first place. I was a little disappointed with the Korean pancake platter as the portions on that were very small.
Beautiful space and decor, and a great menu.
The problem is all of the dishes were very bland. Dumplings were watery and not at all spicy; fried things simply tasted like tempura, and not a particularly good one. Very little flavor in any of the 3 mains our table ordered. The signature cocktails were also beautiful but thin on flavor. In short, much as I love tj concept, the food just is not enjoyable enough to return.
Upon entering Hangawi, my husband and I were immediately
Upon entering Hangawi, my husband and I were immediately enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The elegant and understated décor set the stage for an unforgettable meal. Allow me to elaborate. Hangawi is unlike any other Korean restaurant found in K-town. It is an establishment that is entirely vegan, featuring a contemporary ambiance that seamlessly blends with touches of Korean culture. This harmonious ambiance significantly enhanced our dining experience. Having made advance reservations via phone, my husband and I were seated at a beautiful table. I must acknowledge that the attention to detail in the presentation of the silverware and table setting contributed to the overall elegance of the experience. Moving on to the culinary aspect, we commenced our meal by ordering two appetizers: beet noodles with buckwheat pancakes and a winter appetizer platter consisting of dumplings and stuffed shiitake mushrooms, among other delectable offerings. I must honestly assert that the standout appetizer was the beet noodles with buckwheat pancakes. For our main entrees, we selected spicy tofu cutlets in chili and soybean sauce for my husband and bibimbap in a stone bowl with crispy lotus for myself. The diverse flavors truly tantalized my taste buds. In my opinion, the stone bowl with crispy lotus stood out as the superior choice between the two. My sole disappointment was the scarcity of the crispy lotus. We concluded our meal with black sesame cake and matcha cheesecake, both of which were accompanied by two distinct types of vegan ice cream. My husband and I collectively favored the matcha cheesecake over the black sesame cake, which we found to be rather dense. It is important to note that Hangawi's menu is seasonal, meaning that the offerings change from month to month. However, they do maintain a selection of signature dishes that remain available throughout the year. Additionally, they often offer specials, such as the upcoming Valentine's Special. I strongly recommend making advance reservations to ensure a delightful and memorable experience with your partner.
Overall, a good experience.
You are expected to remove your shoes upon entering. We kept our coats with us as there was not anywhere designated to place them - I was grateful for this later on as our table was near the door and it was freezing! The food was good but not great and the vermicelli (japchae) portion was not large. We got the dumplings and mushroom stone bowl with black truffle paste as well. There wasn't much truffle flavor in our stone bowl. I'm not vegetarian/vegan but wanted to try this place out as some of my friends love it. I personally wasn't that impressed but it certainly is a decent option for those who are vegetarian.
Wonderful Korean vegan restaurant
…and this from a non vegan. From the friendly staff to the menu with many excellent choices, everything was first class. Upon arriving, you are asked to remove your shoes before you are seated at your table (you sit on cushions with a recessed space for your feet. No need to go over menu as it can be easily found online. Price for 2 was ~ $150 (this included 3 appetizers, 2 main dishes / hot pots, wine sampler and tea. This was our second visit and when it NYC again we will most definitely stop by for another great meal.
Soft atmosphere and deliciously subtle flavors
This serene, sumptuous restaurant is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal. We were greeted by a warm hostess and shown to a cozy table where we sat on comfortable cushions in a soft atmosphere. We shared the vegetable dumplings, black truffle dumplings, mushroom stone bowl rice, and the tofu clay pot, and everything was so outrageously good that we were all melting into happy puddles by the end of it. The flavors are subtle and interact very well together, which provided a stupendous meal. The service is impeccably good; we weren't rushed out after we finished eating, which allowed us to linger and digest our food in peace.
overall great food and excellent service
I was planning a trip to NYC and on tiktok someone mentioned this korean restaurant, which was vegan and/vegetarian so decided to check it out. the ambiance was really nice and the service was good in explaining the dishes. the food was incredible we started with the sushi platter which provided a variety and each had a unique flavor - my friend said it was some of the best sushi they’ve had ever. we then got a salad which was also good and for the mains we got different bibimbap — both of which were plentiful in size and flavor overall great food and excellent service
Wonderful vegetarian food
Very different restaurant. You sit on a sort of bench at floor level, and your feet extend below, underneath the table. Great vegetarian food. Lots of choices. Great service. Is a bit expensive, though.
Excellent Veggie Find in Korean Town
The Big 3s: Ambience: unique, shoeless, rushed, adjacent, cramped, fun, clean, dark, fusion Service: dexterous and deft, attentive, slightly rushed Food: exquisite and we'd return for EVERY SINGLE dish we had, both over and over
