Late lunch on a weekday, we were greeted warmly and taken to a table in a corner section, where all other tables were occupied and clustered close together, even though the restaurant was only around 40% full.
It soon became clear that that was the section for the non-important people, as I saw the maitre’d circle the other tables to chat (who all had plenty of room between them) but he notably avoided our section.
We’d been sat down for about 15 seconds when the first waiter rushed over to take our drinks order. We had barely opened the menu, so I asked him to come back. He did, approximately one minute later, when my dining companion was in the bathroom. Luckily I could order for both of us. My companion had just arrived back and was lowering himself into the chair when another waiter ran over and asked what we wanted to order. Again, we had to ask for more time.
This behaviour by the wait staff continued; they hovered near the table, anxious to snatch up plates and glasses and rush us through the meal as quickly as possible. A waiter would regularly come by and grab our bottled water to top up (already) full glasses and at one point, sloshed water all over the glass and table.
We had intended to order wine but didn’t bother, as it was now obvious we couldn’t enjoy it in peace. I felt tense throughout the meal, aware we were being watched constantly, unsubtly pressured to hurry up and leave.
If only that was the worst of it, but I haven’t even talked about the food yet. Put simply; the food is an abomination.
We started with the burrata and the beef carpaccio. The burrata was cold, solid as a rock and tasted sour. Digging into it, it crumbled into grey-ish lumps, like it was defrosting after several years the freezer.
The carpaccio was thickly sliced, unnaturally bright red and almost welded to the plate.
Both had clearly just been retrieved from a cold fridge, as the plates were cold too. The carpaccio was making me feel ill, so we left most of both. We were not asked at any point how it was, I strongly suspect they know how genuinely disgusting it is.
My main course was better - but you can’t go too far wrong with a plate of ravioli swimming in butter. My companion had the baked eggplant that looked tasty on the outside, but on the inside was slushy, tasteless and radioactively hot - clearly it had been blitzed in the microwave.
We had two bread baskets - the warm, crunchy slices of bread were delicious with the cold butter. Even the breadsticks were enjoyable, although they were visibly reluctant to bring us the second basket and took their time.
We were done and out of there in just under an hour - a huge, massive, expensive disappointment. Given the prices plus tax & service, the final bill wasn’t too far off what you’d pay for a cheap return flight to Rome. So save your money and go find the real deal instead.
