Incredible! Top service, top food and top ambience.
The owner/chef Patty was so gracious and accommodating. I had the vegetarian options which were so satisfying and delicious. My husband tried everything else and was very pleased. The attention to detail is excellent from the beautiful plating to the pretty dishware to the lovely restrooms! A must try for fellow foodies.

Great, excellent food, but poor service. We did the $75 pre fixe menu option. Every single item of food was amazing. Ambiance of the place was small, cozy, warm feel. What wasn't amazing was waiting 30 minutes in between each food item, as well as waiting 1 hour for dessert and another 30 minutes for the bill. Great place to try, but perhaps they were understaffed on the night we went.

Food was wonderful we did their chef special which is $98 per person. We did not end up ordering a drink since there was only one server and they were very busy. The food did come out on the slower end pace wise. They were very busy and it got very loud when there were bigger groups. The servers did their best to manage the large amounts of people with not many servers/staff. I think with what they had they did their best and were sure to let us know that food would come soon or in a few minutes. We really appreciated that they still checked up on us when really busy. I would have liked for them to explain the dishes a bit more. The first dish we got was the betal leaves which they explained and the rest of the dishes were just brought to us. The food overall was a good experience that would be nice to spruce up from the typical dinners. I'm unsure if I would go again personally but it was a good experience. I would recommend the mango sticky rice dessert dish and the chive dumplings which are appetizers.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my absolute favorite restaurants or Thai food.
Small, cozy, very clean , great food. Not traditional family style. This is a step above

The food was good but like many other reviewers, I was not okay with the timing. We ordered a very expensive meal to go for 5 pm online 4 days in advance, arrived at 5:05 and were told it would take "18 minutes," got it it 5:45, then got a call from the owner 5 minutes later saying it was ready. Clearly, they made it once we arrived and jarred their memory. The chef/owner is very nice but after 9 years I would suggest bringing in someone who knows how to operate a restaurant as far as online sales, reservations, and service.

Unique healthy thai food that will make your taste buds sing. Personable service. The chef graciously engaged with guests.

Everything was perfect! I recommend the prawn appetizer and the coconut mushroom soup!

They have just about the sweetest wait staff, friendly and enthusiastic, and just youthfully adorable. The food was all unique and flavorful, and my husband and I enjoyed splitting a 6 course option together. My particular favorite was the betel leaf appetizer.
Be the first to ReplyWent there for our first anniversary.
Nice intimate atmosphere, good service and delicious food. It's BYOB so you will need to bring wine or liquor to enjoy if so desired.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant was pretty disappointing.
We've been looking forward to going for a few months, and we went on a Saturday night to celebrate a friends birthday. We had the 5 course meal, and our meal lasted 3 hours due to the length between courses. The service was slow and inattentive, definitely not worth the service charge they built into our price. At one point, we found a caterpillar on one of the decorative flowers on our plate, but couldn't get the attention of any staff to address the issue. The food itself was delicious, but definitely not worth what we paid. I did leave still a bit hungry as the portions are smaller. They also charge $10 per bottle of wine that you bring (it's BYOB - but they charge you for bringing wine??) and they didn't offer anything to drink other than water. When the bill came, our meals were supposed to be $65/person, as stated on the menu, but was actually $85/person. I believe a service fee is built into the $85 price, but would've appreciated the transparency upfront. TLDR - will not be returning here, definitely feeling like we paid way too much for what we got.

The energy is very calming and relaxing. We did the five course menu. I started with the Betal Leaves and the Chive Dumplings. Both were mouthwatering. The dumplings I could eat like ten of them. They were that good. Then they came out with the Turmeric Trio Mushroom soup. The soup was delicious. After my entree came out. I got the Famous Coconut Curry with Veggies. This had a little spice to it. The rice helped even out the heat. I really enjoyed it.Then they came out with the dessert of Mango Sticky rice. This was also yummy. Would have rated 4+ stars but I took off a star, because they charge you an automatic 30% service charge and the service level was not justified. It also is BYOB and they charge $10 per bottle. The food itself was excellent but adding on an excessive 30% service charge left a bad taste. Keep in mind when dining here.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my fourth time at Herb.
The first three visits were sublime. Excellent. Tonight was the first disappointment, especially since this was where we chose to spend our anniversary dinner. The food was still delicious, but the menu options were severely limited--we got the 5-course, but there was only one non-plant-based entree option. (The other they were out of; and we had an early reservation, the place was not packed.)The first clue that this was an "off-night" was that the paper menus at the table were crumpled and water-stained. Then they brought us our water--2 plastic bottles of Ice Mountain (?!). And the wait staff seemed either very green, but/or definitely...out of it. (Ahem.)Only one dessert "choice"--the standardMango sticky rice. Good, but nowhere near as exciting as what we've had before, and all the menu said was that the dessert was "chef's whim--you'll be surprised." (I sort of was, but not pleasantly so.)Again the food was still beautifully plated and tasted great, but the experience, especially for our anniversary and $180.00 was disappointing. Third time was a charm, but this fourth has me wondering if I'll ever come back. Disappointing. I know places have their off-nights. It just stinks we had to experience one, especially on a special occasion.

One of the best restaurants I've been to in Chicago and at a good value for the volume of food you get. Every bite of every dish was full of intense flavor. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The restaurant was smartly decorated and the perfect ambience for a date.I had the five course menu ordering:Betal LeavesChive DumplingsTurmeric Trio Mushroom SoupCoconut Curry with ChickenMango and Sticky Rice All the dishes were phenomenal. I highly recommend Herb for a good value and truly outstanding food and service.Location is in a safe area with plenty of street parking, public transport, or ride share / taxi are easy to get.

I would go just for that. So Fresh, So Flavorful. A very talented chef. What needs improvement:They need a more experienced server. The restaurant was small, classy and on the quiet side. Our server was so loud you could hear his rehearsed speech to each new group that sat down. He told a lot of people, including us, to run to Jewel to BYOB after already getting seated, settled, and looking at the menu, which was awkward. He seemed really inexperienced and lacked social/professional/spacial awareness in general-- definitely not the right personality for a higher end place. They don't give an itemized receipt, and gratuity is automatically applied for the server, which he wasn't the best, and the couple in front of us actually requested for him to change it. There is a lack of attention to details: paper napkins instead of cloth, single serve plastic water bottles instead of pitchers. They really need a non-alcoholic drink menu instead of telling you what cans they have.We had to figure out the bill the next day. It was $196: $150 in food, $30 forced tip, the rest tax. The food is truly spectacular and with a few changes here, this place will be a gem!

Friends of ours took us here on Friday and apparently, the owner is struggling to find staff. As a result, it was a 3.5 hour meal that is usually 1.5 at most per our friends as they've been there many times. I'm only posting this 3 star for 2 reasons: (1) there was no communication at all; the entire restaurant was delayed and nobody said anything and (2) when it was time for the bill, she skipped through the credit card prompts and we didn't realize until later that she added 20+% but acting like "everything was included" even though the tip wasn't included. I would have probably tipped 20% still, but don't add it unethically and in disguise - especially when it was the slowest service in the history of my 40 years dining out. ps: She gave us a $1 backscracther as a parting gift. Haha. WTH.

Just Wow!My wife and I walked past this place and decided to try it!The owner came out and talked through the menu with us and about our likes and dislikes and was extremely friendly. We opted for the 5 course meal and I have listed the photos below. The flavors are amazing! This is an experience just as much as it is dinning and priced according.I highly recommend trying!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is so special.
Thai food gets type-cast at a certain (not too high) expectation for cost and presentation, but this is definitely fine dining. I mention that as a warning if you're distractedly scrolling in your phone to pick a "Thai place" based on neighborhood in making plans with someone. That's how I discovered Herb, but if my time/money budget had been tighter, it would have been a problem! The food is absolutely gorgeous and delicious. You're not going to taste much better or snap much better on your cell phone camera. What has brought me here twice (despite having discovered this place *after* having moved 1000 mi away from Chicago) is Herb's offering of a full-bore prix fixe plant-based menu in addition to an omnivorous menu. There are not a whole lot of places to really treat a vegetarian or vegan, and this is one of them.Patty, the chef, is adorable, and on slow nights she'll improvise an omakase experience and come out and tell you about the food. She is a lovely, genuine person.Herb is pretty quirky in some ways - BYOB, and they bring you your water in 500 mL plastic bottles from the grocery store. It's also quite affordable among the Michelin-grade eateries. If you're stuffy and trying to impress someone, that might put you off, but I personally don't care much about that kind of thing.Herb is a gift!

My fiancé and I went here to celebrate my new job, and we couldn't have picked a more perfect place! The food was unreal. We both decided this was the best place we've ever eaten!! The flavors were so fresh and everything went together amazingly. The betel leaf was a flavor combination that was unlike anything I've ever tasted. The chef came and spoke to us about the menu which I thought was a great touch. You could tell she was really passionate about cooking and she has an incredible understanding of flavor and texture. She told us that a lot of the ingredients come fresh from her garden, and you can really taste the difference! I would highly recommend. You get a lot of food for the price- we were so stuffed we had to get the mango rice to go!

Too good to be true! I really love their passion and the food. The flavor is so rich in a single dish. Just taste the extraordinary chemistry between herb and thai food!

6 course meal was delicious, but not worth $75. Service was okay but far from great. Some of the items came out in the wrong order. We we're never offered any drink options other than the plastic water bottles on the table. Ambiance and presentation was very average.

Absolutely fantastic experience! I found Herb on a whim as I was looking for a dinner fitting for a graduation party that was near the university. I was so lucky that Chef Patty had room on that day and that we got to celebrate at her restaurant!! From the get-go Chef Patty welcomed my party of nine and made each one of us feel special, valued, and cared for. The food was out of this world with bold flavor and complexity and there were plenty of options for all my dinner guests (vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free!) Chef Patty even brought out a book of quotes from strong, successful women and had all my guests sign it with a personalized note before presenting it to me as a graduation gift with a long-stemmed rose. I never would have seen that coming--so incredibly thoughtful and touching!! We will absolutely be back! All of my out-of-town guests said it was their favorite part of the visit :)Also, the restaurant is BYOB so make sure you come prepared. We brought plenty of champagne. THANK YOU SO MUCH CHEF PATTY!!!! Can't wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyFood and service from the chef herself was excellent.
The place is cozy. It's BYOB and only prix fixe, they don't have an actual menu to choose from but you can tell them your preferences, allergies, etc. We were very happy with the experience.

I love this place! I've been here twice and it is always a wonderful experience. Make reservations in advance.I love the crispy prawn appetizer.I'm also pescatarian so be sure to lead with any dietary restrictions since it's a seasonal prix fixe menu. Also, be sure to say hi to Chef Patty and she will tell you the backstory behind her dishes! HERB does not disappoint!

Herb is an amazing restaurant like no other - delicious, innovative food and a excellent atmosphere. The prix fixe menu is very rich and a tour de force of flavors. The owner, Patty, is extremely nice and often speaks to every table individually to ensure they are having the best experience possible. It's an extra nice touch that makes you feel like you're at home in someone's home kitchen. The restaurant is BYOB so you can bring your favorite drinks with you. To top it all off, Billy is the best server I have ever been lucky enough to have take care of me. He is extremely attentive, funny, knowledgeable, professional and a great conversationalist. It really adds to the experience. Visit herb soon for an unforgettable experience!
