Sublime
Hern is a small intimate restaurant situated in the trendy Leeds Suburb of Chapel Allerton It offers a fixed set menu With a small space such as this and no room for manoeuvre on the menu the cooking and service needs to be absolutely on point…and it is!! An excellent menu with every dish worthy of minute examination, in short great service and sublime food

We had the four course set dinner menu and I had the wine pairing alongside. Each course was lovely, and the food is innovative with fresh seasonal ingredients. The wines are also interesting and something a bit different. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyLittle gem. Incredible food, service and ambience!
Fabulous food, beautiful little restaurant and super cool and friendly team. Myself and my Husband visited this weekend and had the most amazing meal at Hern. We’ve lived in the area for over 9 years and whilst Hern had only been open for the last 4, we have always bypassed booking in - well absolutely more fool us!! This place is incredible! For me, the Venison was probably one of the nicest pieces of meat I’ve ever tasted - absolutely melt in the mouth joy! As a non-drinker, I was most impressed by the AF options available. Some of the best places I’ve eaten have really let themselves down on the choices available but the ‘soft-drinks’ were way more than that - the L’antidote was a treat! Thank you again to the whole team - we will definitely be back. (Only one teeny tiny niggle…. the space was a tad on the cold-side - but I do appreciate this is so hard to manage, especially in Winter!)

Wonderful restaurant with lovely relaxed atmosphere, incredible range of dishes, catered for dairy free with no fuss

Always a really lovely time here. We had the 4 course lunch (counting good bread as one) which for £25 is a bargain. Simple stuff treated with love and turned into something delicious. Great vinho verde and a warm and welcoming server.
Be the first to ReplyUtterly Incredible!
I've walked past Hern so many times in Chapel Allerton and always wanted to visit, but, shamefully was put off by not being able to book online...so now you can, I booked as soon as I could and ventured down the road this evening. I've got nothing but praise for the place, from the calm, attentive service to the amazing wine (order the Cinsault, you won't be disappointed), to the brilliantly cooked food. I'll be back, again, again and again. Cheese course also worthy of a mention! Thank you Hern.

Light and airy restaurant. Great food and wine. Loved the Cod cheeks and smoked eels. We will definitely be back.

Friendly, unpretentious, delicious neighbourhood restaurant. Small but perfectly formed. Look forward to the next visit.
Be the first to ReplyNot quantity but quality
We enjoyed our meal in this quirky and intimate small restaurant . The food was interesting with some unusual combinations of ingredients . The portions were just right for me and I was particularly impressed that they were able to rustle up a vegetarian alternative to the main course at the last minute as the message that I didn't eat meat had somehow got lost on the way . Attentive but not intrusive service . I hope they do well : it's great to be able to have something different and inventive from time to time . Family who are used to southern prices felt the charge for the four courses was very reasonable .
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyed on the whole, a couple of reasons for not giving it 5 stars.
When I booked I had forgot that that my friend was pescatarian. However as there was an optional additional fish course we hoped that this could be substituted for the meat main course. But told that wasn’t possible so she received a rather inadequate none meat course instead. I did let the owner know that we were disappointed by that response and was told that the fish is more expensive than the meat course. The flavours of everything were superb and quite unique.
Be the first to ReplyReally lovely evening
The service was excellent. The setting very basic but pleasant. There is a set menu but I didn’t like one of the courses and was provided with a fantastic alternative. It was no trouble. Had a really lovely wine which was recommended to me. Each course was explained, which we liked. We thought the potion size was perfectly adequate. Personally, I don’t enjoy feeling stuffed at the end of a meal (maybe my age!!). I usually don’t have room for so many courses and I really enjoyed having so many. For those with bigger appetites, there was the option of adding a fish course and a cheese course. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed it and will go back again. We enjoy supporting local independents. Keep up the great work!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but TINY portions
Such a nice little restaurant - love the concept, no food waste. Service and setting both great and wine list is excellent. We’ve been three times now and every time it’s the same issue - ridiculously tiny portions, always leave hungry. Simply not good enough especially as they have increased their prices - which is understandable in the current climate but just dish out reasonable portions! Last time we went all 6 of us had the same complaint. Everything is a 5/5 apart from the portion sizes.

Good food but tiny portions and exorbitant prices. My duck was almost raw and I wanted to send it back but my wife didn’t want to make a fuss on our anniversary. I was still hungry when we left. I won’t be going back.

Be the first to ReplyIntimate venue serving great food.
Managed to get a Saturday night booking. Restaurant is very small but has plenty of atmosphere. Greeted by very enthusiastic waiter. Set Menu with option to add in courses. Stand outs were pearl barley for a starter and Mutton main. Worth a wait for a table. Very good value for the quality.

A fantastic menu for a spring evening
Enthusiastic knowledgeable service from Sean (10/10)
Exceptional food
Excellent ambience
I can’t praise Herb highly enough
Superb cosy restaurant
Our first visit but it will not be our last.
A fixed but imaginative menu of 4 courses for £35 or £45 if the cheese course is included.
A lovely cosy space and it was full with a good atmosphere.
The menu changes regularly and it was an excellent balance of flavours and textures.
The chef came out with some of the courses and it was good to talk to him.
A very enjoyable evening.
Ensure you book a table.
Sensational
Tiny restaurant in the heart of Chapel A. Absolutely delicious set menu which we ate with a very well chosen bottle of red, and fantastic service. Cannot wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyLovely place, lovely people
This place has a heart, a soul and a clever, clever chef/owner. Home-made crisps (!) and cod roe was a snack highlight but it was the economical and first rate cooking of duck and lamb that stole the show. The good wine list was reasonably priced. Waitress was lovely - chatty and happy - but the real tell was that Rab (owner operator) was in the kitchen cooking for us whilst his partner and folks were out front celebrating his daughter's first birthday - they even brought over two pieces of her birthday cake for us. Such a lovely, unpretentious and top rate community restaurant.
I'm sorry we kept you from your gorgeous girl's birthday lunch Rab ... but we had a lovely time and felt like we were lucky to experience, relatively early on your journey, the fruits of the talents of someone who'll really go places. And thanks for the cake!
Fantastic and surprising evening!
Our first time at Hern. Even though we live just around the corner, we haven't been to Hern before - I always felt it looked a bit small and possibly a little Spartan for my liking? However I am delighted to say that we had a superb evening there tonight. The food was delicious - we added a shared grey mullet to our 4 courses and the cheese course - all of it was so tasty and beautifully served. Really knowledgeable and excellent service, comfy and cosy on a very cold night - not spartan but definitely stylish. Really liked not having to choose. All the courses felt just the right size, very seasonal - the mutton rack was excellently accompanied by celeriac. The baked apple in hazelnut cream was luxurious but homely too. It felt like a real treat and I cannot understand why we haven't been before - but will definitely come again and would share with friends too. Really enjoyable wine too and home made cordial. Thanks to all at Hern for making it a great evening for us.

Fabulous restaurant, amazing food, loved the whole experience and the staff were so lovely and informative.
Be the first to ReplyA chef who understands taste and textures - well worth the visit
Hern is small (approx 16 covers) located on a corner- we nearly missed it and the Starbucks opposite had never heard of it!
The welcome was warm and the menu quickly explained. The sourdough bread and accompanying treats made us realise that this chef knew his stuff and we were in for a real treat. We opted for the fish course as a £9 addition to the set menu and were not disappointed. My wife doesn’t eat beef or lamb but this was no problem, the alternative to my lamb was chicken - both were delicious.
The star of the show was the baked apple desert accompanied with a aubergine custard. Absolutely delicious! For the quality of ingredients, standard of cooking and service this restaurant is highly recommended.
Deliciously different.
We hadn’t spoken to anyone who’d tried this Chapel Allerton restaurant before our visit last night but we’d read some reviews, so knew to expect the fixed (ish) menu and great food and wine. We weren’t disappointed in any way. On a busy Saturday evening we felt that we had informal but well informed and friendly personal service with helpful and tantalising descriptions of the wine and food. It was a refreshing change to find a wine list that didn’t trot out the usual suspects and we had an orange wine (sorry, can’t remember the name) which was a delightful surprise and a glass of sparkling pineau with our dessert. Perfect. As for the food, I could list everything we had but would suggest you go along to try it for yourselves. Suffice to say each course, as it arrived, was pronounced to be our favourite. I could eat it all again this evening. Do give this place a try.
