For my aunts birthday, I treated her to an omakase at the first restaurant to offer it in San Diego. The price is $135 per person so it is pricey but you get 18 courses (one piece nigiri each) and it's all by reservation. You could tell it was all couples for special occasions that had the same idea. We all got to sit at the bar and watch as the sushi chefs prepared each bite meticulously and fun to hear what the fish was, where it came from, and any toppings or sauces. I thoroughly enjoyed the initial screening and reaching out to us to ask about dietary restrictions and such. They gladly provided tamari and left off any soy sauce for my aunt who is gluten intolerant. She loved everything she ate which means a lot for someone that orders nigiri every time. My only criticism is our chef wasn't very talkative to us compared to the other chefs with their attendees they were given and there was no birthday special or dessert offered. I would have wished for more interaction, especially since we were there to see how each roll was made or maybe some history about the restaurant. It was all good for sure, but for paying that much I would like more of an experience that I can rave about to my friends and family and treat more of them to not only great fish but great hospitality.

Be prepared to spend $150+pp Very surprising and not apparent on the website.
Be the first to ReplyThis is by far the best omakase I have had.
(Have had Nobu, Soichi, and Ichifuji here in SD) First off, the restaurant is small but you never feel crowded. It is a cute intimate setting. We were lucky enough to have Marcus as our sushi chef. We really enjoyed talking with him as he worked. He is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to sushi and fish! Each piece was prepared perfectly! Presentation and taste were superb. The fish quality was outstanding! We paired the meal with sake and beer which completed the wonderful meal. Although we were not hungry at the end of the meal. We ended up ordering 3 extra pieces just because there was a special we wanted to try (hotate) and we wanted just one more taste of the yellowtail. I will absolutely be going back again. Worth every penny and more. I included some photos but not all.

Some of the most delicious sushi I've ever had. Chef Steven was awesome, it was wonderful to watch him prepare each piece of nigiri for us. With only 14 seats it has a very personal atmosphere. If you love sushi, save up and take your favorite sushi loving friend here as soon as reservations are available.

Best sushi I have ever had including in Seattle, New York, and Japan. Terrific omakase. Fabulous service. Five stars!
Be the first to ReplyHidden fish is a hidden gem in San Diego.
It's ironic that this is one of cheaper omakase. It is 18 courses for only $135. Def a place to go to and the chefs were great. Service was on point especially because each 90 minute session only has 8 seats.

Hidden Fish truly deserves a 5-star rating for an exceptional Omakase experience. From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance was inviting, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining journey. Our dedicated Chef Marcus showcased an impressive depth of knowledge, passionately sharing insights about each meticulously crafted nigiri and the sourced origins of every fish. The 13-piece course over 90 minutes was an absolute delight, with each bite surpassing the last in flavor and presentation. The combination of ingredients was masterfully executed, creating a harmonious symphony of tastes that exceeded all expectations. The value for the experience was undeniable, making Hidden Fish a top choice for future Omakase adventures. I can't recommend this place enough to friends and family, as it truly sets the bar high for exceptional food, service, and ambiance. Pro Tip: Head over to their other restaurant Hitokuchi next door for an izakaya experience.

I feel like omasake is one of those activities that you have to try at least once! I came here with my bestie and we were both very impressed. Everything was really fresh & it was a nice and relaxing experience. We were afraid that it would be a little too shamcy & they would talk to us too much when we wanted to just enjoy the good food & chill LOL. It wasn't that case though, there was a good balance of interaction while also being informative about each piece. Hidden Fish was on the more affordable side compared to other omasake locations. I definitely would recommend!

Simply incredible! We came here for our first omakase experience and were so impressed by the service and quality. They text you several hours before your reservation, give you some etiquette tips, and you can text them your drink order! When we arrived, the hostess checked off our reservation and then quickly got us our drinks while we waited to be sat. The space is cozy and well-lit to highlight the chefs working for you and to display the nigiri. Everything was insanely good but our favorites of the evening were the fluke, sea bream, and salmon. Another highlight for me was our chef noticed that I was left-handed and then oriented all of the pieces so they would be easier for me to grab. Amazing service!!

WOWOWOW!! Wish I could give Hidden Fish more than 5 stars!! This was my second time trying Omakase so I only have one other experience to compare to but my expectations were beyond exceeded. Service: The service here is amazing. Everyone is so kind and what I love about this place is that they really take the time to educate you on the experience. For example, we received a text prior to our reservation with notes/tips on how to dine. The first place I went to for Omakase didn't really provide instructions on how to grab the sushi or eat it etc. (which if you've never tried omakase it can be confusing - like if you should grab the sushi with your hands vs chopsticks). Also you could probably google omakase etiquette before you go but it was nice that they provided all this info beforehand. Food: DELICIOUS!! Literally worth every dollar. The quality of the fish was insane. Our chef told us that they place their orders at 8pm for the fish coming from Japan/Korea and overnight it. Ambiance: it's very small and intimate inside but I prefer that. It creates more of a relaxing experience. Also the place was spotless. Even the bathroom was really clean Overall, this place is PRICEY but definitely worth every penny if you really want to treat yourself. I wish I could go every month! Plus it's by so many dessert spots so you can get a sweet treat after!

Young sushi chefs who've crafted a remarkably unique 18-piece omakase with additional offerings that take sushi to next-level decadence. I mean toro tartar with black truffle, and uni? And caviar!?! It may not make sense to some - but I think the idea from the chefs is, "I can, so why not?" The uni from Spain, the seared cod, the made on-the-spot yellowtail handroll, and the tender scallops were definite standouts.

WOW. Came here with my husband for the 18-course omakase which I had gotten him as a Christmas gift and we both agreed it was probably the best meal we've ever had - we want to come back immediately!Every single dish is artfully crafted and absolutely delicious, the restaurant itself is simply beautiful, and the staff are SO nice. Honestly cannot think of a single thing anyone could ever complain about when dining here. Just perfection. If you aren't convinced, check out my photos!

It's a 90 min omakase for $135 which is pricey for what you get (~$6 piece). The fish piece sizes are ok - neither skimpy nor generous. If you have a good appetite, you will leave hungry (unless you buy more food following the omakase) - I even thought about going to the birria restaurant next door. To save time, the chefs precut the fish slices and stack them like cardboard, which is not what I'd expect for an expensive sushi restaurant, but Henry Ford would be proud.

Been here 3 times with my wife so far and the food and service just keeps getting better and better. First time I went, Chef John served my omakase and the other 2 times were served by different chefs. Regardless of who served me, the food was always fresh and the flavor perfectly balanced. I've had plenty of sushi so far and I love that their omakase taste is flexible when it comes to those who can't stand raw fish or the taste of "fishy" fish. As for the service, attentive staff enough so that you won't have to look for the waiter. I also want to point out that their sake selection goes perfect with each bite! I don't live in SD but Hidden Fish will always be my go-to spot every time I visit. Thanks Chef John and team for giving such a formidable culinary experience every time.
Be the first to Reply18 course omakase dinner.
It was outstanding. There was not one round that disappointed. The sushi chefs were interactive and so friendly! Hidden Fish seats 12 at a time so it's an infinite dining setting and really cool ambience. Can't wait to go back. Make sure to snag a reservation because they are booking out a month or over.
Be the first to ReplyThe intimate atmosphere, attentive servers, and friendly
The intimate atmosphere, attentive servers, and friendly chefs are truly the bright stars here as the quality of fish was not the most exemplary or memorable. Because each course is mostly nigiri, this experience would be best if you are looking for an omakase within a time crunch.
Be the first to ReplyIt was overall a pleasant experience.
This was not our first Omakase and having it in Tokyo, NYC, and Honolulu it doesn't compare but for San Diego, I guess it works. They have dividers between parties so the space is small. Wait staff is basically on top of you. The fish is fresh but cut is small so I wasn't always able to differentiate between some of the fish and the rice is heavily seasoned. Creative with the different flavors. I finished dinner with ok/good not great.

Holy crap, this place is good! I have been wanting to try this place for years, and after last night, I can't believe it took me this long to finally experience such a wonderful place.During our experience, we did the 90 min omakase for $135 each, which consists of 18 rounds of items, ranging from sushi to a mini uni & ikura bowl, to a perfect handroll. We loved all of the items, and as you can see from our menu (that they allow you to write on and take home), our reviews via stars and smiley faces progressively grew after each dish. There are also drink options, such as sake by the bottle and 2 options of beer brand choices (Sapporo on draft & one of their exclusive Japanese craft beer brands that consists of three bottles with different flavor/hop profiles). Honestly, the exclusive beer is a bit on the pricey side per bottle ($21 dollars), BUT I will say that it was definitely delicious, especially the middle tiered yellow bottle, so I highly recommend that one.At the end of the omakase experience, you will have an option to purchase additional items a la carte, which is nice, just in case you are hungry and want the liberty to choose. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience here. It also has a unique and more casual take on the omakase experience, as they highly suggest guests to grab the sushi and to eat it by hand. Lastly, service was wonderful all around as well, and we wanted to give Josh (our host/server), Sam (our chef), and Jenny (the restaurant manager) in really making us feel welcomed and well accommodated :) We also got to check out their new sister restaurant next door, Hitokuchi, which was really cool. Excited to go back there to have a full experience next time!

Had the delight to come here for an Omakase service and wow was I ever impressed, the chefs here are very skilled and it shows. My friend who I went with was allergic to Shrimp and we were happy to find out that night menu did not include shrimp. We had 10 courses and were offered to buy another few. The salmon I had was some of the best I've ever had. Watching the Chefs cut the fish right in front of you is really fun. We also shared a bottle of sake and what I thought was is that is that they don't majorly up charge. It's neat to eat with only 10-20Other people and you get a real romantic experience.
Be the first to ReplyThis is really 4.
5 stars 0.5 for supporting small business. The sushi is great but not like "wow" which is why I am knocking off a star. I think if this is your first omakase you will definitely love it. For regular omakase eaters this might be a bit a let down but don't get me wrong this is still really great sushi. The service was a bit over the top. There were 5 maybe 6 of us that night with 3 servers standing all behind us on stand by...but I guess that's a lot better than no one is attending you so I am being a bit critical here

Visited Hidden Fish last night and it was the finest omakase experience I ever had and it was truly just special. Walking in from the start the servers were very professional and how they were treating the customers with utmost respect was just amazing. They were very eager to help and made sure I had the best experience at Hidden Fish.I was served by Chef Steven and he was really passionate about what he do and how he prepared every single nigri with perfection, I can just tell by how the ingredients were prepared and the taste. I cannot forget about the flavors of Hidden Fish. Every single nigiri was so special and you really had to focus on each chew to really feel the utmost flavor of each nigiri. If you really want to feel what I felt then you have to visit Hidden Fish, and can't wait to visit Sake Lounge once it's ready to be opened. To Hidden Fish Team Thank you!

The owner reached out to me and educated me on the uni selection process. Their uni is grade A, the finest in San Diego. He answered all my questions and I am grateful for his clarification/education.

Wow! Impeccable. If you want attention, to be doted on, to feel like you are appreciated as a customer, and pampered, make your reservation now. The minimalistic decor with this super warm and ingratiating staff was the perfect combination that weirdly matched the food- like toro and uni. The pre-dinner text with drink options- that touch was just so welcoming. The green tea was comforting and the chefs were right there making nigiri til I felt like I was going to pop. Every need accounted for, with constant attentiveness to my comfort and happiness during the 60 minute meal and 30 minutes of a la cart. I left feeling full and happy and with such a warm feeling toward this place- I just cannot wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyThe spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle speaks of a dimension
The spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle speaks of a dimension that transcends words; a space that cannot be described with language, as the act of labeling fails to adequately convey meaning. This resonated with me as I tried to write this review for Hidden Fish. Their sushi provides an out of body experience, unnameable, but repeatable, and of course, enjoyable. As a self proclaimed foodie living in San Diego for 6 years, this remains my favorite restaurant.

Keep going back here for special occasions and am always blown away by the freshness of the fish, the creativity of the specials, and (maybe most importantly) the attentive and lovely staff. With a $135 omakase price tag that is booked night after night, you know the fish is going to be good. But the excellent, interactive, and fun chefs and lovable staff are the intangibles that make this place my favorite when I want to spend a pretty penny on sushi. Highly recommend if you are in SD.
