Genie helped us check in and was INCREDIBLE.
She was so kind and friendly and helped us get situated once we arrived. We were new to the campground and she helped us with how to set up our fire as well. She really made our whole experience 100x better. Thank you Genie!! -J12
Be the first to ReplyAn amazing campsite.
No trees over our campsite, so minimal danger in the case of wind or rain. You can hear the waves from your tent and can take a short walk and see the water for yourself. The cleanest bathroom I've seen at any campsite. Amazing staff too, especially Skylar who was extra helpful when I visited last year. The only downside (though some would consider it an upside) is that the cell reception on site is almost non-existent. If you really need it, taking a short walk from the campsite can help a lot.

Trust me, I checked online, you will not have wifi and not for the "park" to provide but just your regular phone, I got an SOS signal and I have AT&T and a T-Mobile Inseego mifi, nope don't play around. I drove 3 hours hoping to have a nice cool mini break for the week from NYC proper. I had to immediately turn around and head home, the lady who checked me in, said that if I wanted wifi I'd have to head to town, that they are and I quote, "In a dead zone" Never have I ever encountered this and I've been up into Canada and down to the Keys, nooooooo signal? Not the park's fault, but not posting it somewhere so that you can make a choice, rather than lose a week's worth of a reservation that's on them. And I see in other reviews that there are no lights, I don't remember seeing any, so when the sun goes down it's a wrap! Good luck, I normally take pics so I can share and check out the facilities but I didn't have enough time I had to head back to civilization. To be honest, it looks like a barren parking lot, go check another review for amenities and such. All that way, jeeze!

The staff rocks and keeps the place spotless and running smoothly. And so well managed. I hope it stays this good forever.

Labor Day Weekend 2021 - Everything is open! I came on a whim of intuition, with tent in tow, that my 3.5 he drive from the city might, just might result in a walk-up campsite for one or two nights. At first I was turned away because I was too late- all the available sites had been given away before 3pm. However, I stayed curious and asked some extra questions about how the walk-up system worked in the event I would try again the next day. To my luck, the park attendant said to come back in a couple hours because I might get lucky with some later call backs... and 4:30pm lucky I got!!! I did have a backup plan- that I would head to Wildwood on North Fork which had plenty of availability if I couldn't get a spot at Hither Hills. Everything was open- even the kitchen making egg sandwiches and salads in the General Store. Lifeguards on the beach. Beach stand selling alcohol. Showers and restrooms all open, and very clean. I stayed in the A section of the campground, which has the most sand on the lots, and backs up to the dunes, which was exactly what I wanted/needed. The campsites don't have electric, but there is a water spout in the middle of some sections. The bathrooms are never too far and the showers are clean. There are some electrical outlets in the bathroom for things like hair dryer and electric razor, or for me, charging a battery pack while I shower, brush my teeth, and do my hair. The beach on this weekend was pristine and perfect. Despite hurricane Ira moving through only days earlier, after the storm, the beach at Hither Hills had barely any debris or carnage and just smooth waves and perfect weather for a long holiday weekend. I didn't bother bringing a cooler or camp stove because I was just one person and there are plenty of restaurants and bars and cafes around to visit by car during the day- and that's part of the fun for me (and every yelper?!?)- exploring local food options! I also really enjoyed visiting the East Hampton library to pick up some free books, get WiFi connected, and recharge phone battery during the day. You definitely won't find a cheaper stay in the Hamptons or Montauk unless you're invited to someone's beach house!!

Absolutely loved camping here in August and have plans to camp here again before the season ends (in November). Campgrounds are right on the beach with views of planets on clear nights and sounds of the waves crashing as you sleep. At night, if you choose to do so, you can take a nice, private stroll on the pristine beaches. The bathrooms are clean with hot water and although the general store wasn't open, we were able to purchase firewood from the camp office. As other reviewers have mentioned, L.I. is seeing an uptick in ticks (pun-intended) so prepare for that. While we didn't see any on the campgrounds, I found one on my partner while we were hiking on a nearby trail. The little town of Montauk is a 10-15 min drive away and there are a few cute coffee, food, and clothing shops that were still open during COVID. I'm not sure what the town looks like as the weather gets colder, but I will update my review when we visit again during their off-season :)
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful beach spot on the ocean.
We strictly came for beach, not for camping. Bring everything you need, because the general store isn't open and neither is the beach snacks/sundries stand. I'm guessing due to Covid. They have clean bathroom & shower facilities, so if you're driving out East for the day you can clean up before you go somewhere else. Very peaceful, pristine beach. Saw a whale breaching while here. Lived on Long Island my entire life have never seen that before. Had a great day here.

Heed my call when I say prepare for TICKS, read the other reviews to hear how beautiful the park is. Prior to my trip I did see a few reviews from 3-5 years back stating the tick situation but did not pay them much mind. Our site A002 had sandy soil with low grass. Daily we were spotting 5+ ticks on the inside and outside of our tent, on towels that fell on the ground and immediately picked up, even waiting on our metal beach chairs. I would have to visually inspect everything I was going to use that had contact with the ground. A few of us picked ticks off our clothes but luckily none had embedded into skin. We lived in the smell of DEEP WOODS insect repellent at the beach which was slightly ironic. Some quick reading online turned up that ticks are booming on Long Island. I'll have another year to contemplate returning as the site booking window for 2021 was opened and it is completely filled.

... cause too many tents does not mean spread out tents. but spread out tents should not compare to too too many tents because too many tents is too many tents. but why spread tents when the number of tents is below too many tents? These are a few of the many questions i have for scot.
Be the first to ReplyA rip off with rude staff.
They charge $10 to park for the day to use a few picnic tables. Another car was blocking a "no pets" sign as we drove in but the lady taking tickets didn't bother telling us this despite seeing our dog in the backseat. As soon as we parked and stepped out of the car with our dog, she cane walking over screaming at us. We quietly got back in our car and on the way out requested our $10 back. We were told "no refunds." There are plenty of beautiful beaches and campsites in the area, don't waste your $$ and time with this ripoff with rude disrespectful employees.
Be the first to ReplyThis campground is jam-packed in the summer because it is
This campground is jam-packed in the summer because it is the most affordable lodging option on the South Fork for people seeking a beach vacation. Reservations have to be made months in advance for a spot in the high season. Sites are generally clean, the general store is convenient, and the restrooms are for the most part kept in good order. Plus you are only a hundred yards from the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately it does attract some people who are less interested in camping and more interested in partying. Especially beware of camping in the all-tent loop on the eastern side of the park, where the entrance gate is not staffed and where people can sneak in extra campers and cars onto their campsite. On a recent visit one group of "Jersey Shore" cast wannabees lit a sky lantern that sailed into our tent while our daughter was sleeping in it. The tent could have very well gone up in flames; thankfully the tent was only damaged by their carelessness. If you know what you're getting into this is a very good place to camp, but if you seek more quiet lodgings you'd best look elsewhere and stay away from Montauk.
