House of Nanking San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
The beef dishes were delicious, it would melt in your mouth.
The Sesame chicken was very salty, and since we didn't get any white rice it wasn't very palatable. The Mogu Beef was my favorite, it was in a honey-mustardy sauce. We also tried the Honey Beef and Apples to try something new, and it was surprisingly good! The pieces of apples tasted like apple cobbler, and the beef was sweet and salty. The Chow Mein was refreshing and had a gingery flavor to it, with some added texture from the cabbage. The service was fast in terms of bringing out dishes, but we had to ask several times for waters for the whole table. It was very hustle and bustle, and waitresses were yelling back and forth at each other while running around; not something bad, but it's just slightly chaotic. The owner allowed my service dog in without saying anything, which is appreciated as some places still complain. I would make the trip to come again for the Mogu Beef!

I came here on a Friday and didn't have to wait long for a table. The interior was nice and the service was good. The food I thought was very salty, both the noodles and sesame chicken. We didn't get rice, which I think would've helped. I've never had sesame chicken with potatoes before but I enjoyed them. The sauce for the potstickers were also different from what I'm use to. I enjoyed my time there overall.

Not as overpriced as I thought since it's a touristy spot, but experience wasn't as superb as I had hoped. Food was good hut nothing special in my opinion. Got the chow mein and sweet and sour pork. Both were solid but a little too oily for what I was feeling that day. Yummy overall! Seating was quick and ordering + paying was speedy too.

Fish soup whole Sizzling friend rice pork Famous Nanking sesame chicken with sweet potato Beef dish Went here after watching the show hoping to see the stars of the show but didn't. Also notice that they push pretty hard to order their special. It's okay
The line is mostly of non-asian folks.
95% of patrons are white atleast on the weekend we went. Ordered the house noodle with shrimp and tender fish in garlic sauce supposedly either mustard greens but came with spinach. Must be a palette thing but definitely will not recommend for asian folks.
Unfriendly staff
This restaurant was recommended on our San Francisco tour, and the food definitely lived up to the hype. Unfortunately, the service fell short of our expectations. While the food was excellent, we had to request a glass for our drink and experienced some discomfort when our server took our credit card inside to process the payment (I'd had bad experience with such practices elsewhere). We understand tipping is customary, and we did leave one, but the server's comment about the amount left a negative impression.

What the h-well did I just eat? I should have known when the hot and sour soup arrived and it tasted like canned tomatoes, with a tablespoon of sugar with wisps of eggs...to just cancel the rest of the meal and leave. But I didn't. The waiter greets us with a friendly hello and would you like some hot tea? In which we replied, "oh that would be lovely." ( that's 4 teas at $5 each ) I imagined the word bubble over the waiter's head as he does the Kendall Jenner cat walk back in to the restaurant. "SUCKAH" We ordered the: (NOT) happy cucumbers, not fresh and crunchy, but limp, soaking in and overused pickle brine. Famous sesame chicken, maybe at some point in the late 1900's and early 2000's this was THE chicken to be had. Nope, not in 2024, I'll say Panda Express over this plate of fried breading with a morsel of chicken as big as your pinky finger tip. Pass the hot tea. Mogu fish was the only dish that was palatable. Green beans, nothing special, just green beans tossed in oil and maybe some salt and pre processed garlic. There were 4 of us and our bill came to be about $35 per person. When Panda Express makes a better plate for half the price, it really is time for the restaurant to make some ingredient changes,m and come in with some fresh ideas. Maybe the owner can be a secret diner and get a taste of the food. This is supposedly an iconic SF restaurant, sadly it's not representative of the good Chinese food that can be had.

Walked by this place saw lots of people sitting outside so we decided to give it a try. Ordered the owner suggested fish soup and their famous scallion pancakes. Only one word "meh"! Service was fine but the food was not good at all...
Food was good.
I came here as a teenager and it was just as good as I remembered it. The decor was fine, but their large amounts of inventory in the dining space detracts from the nice ambiance. It just feels cluttered. The customer service was lacking, but the food was good and came out quickly. Might come back.
Excellent authentic and unique dishes! Worth the trip.
I asked an employee at the bar next to the City Lights bookstore where he goes for good Chinese food in Chinatown. He answered without hesitation, House of Nanking. It was excellent! It’s a small place, very busy on a Wednesday night, and we sat next to a wall of boxes, but that doesn’t matter. The food was phenomenal. We tried the Pork Potstickers which we loved. It had a delicious peanut sauce. My husband and I split a dish that had crispy beef bites in a mustard type sauce with vegetables. Unique but absolutely delicious. I wish I could remember the name of the dish! This restaurant doesn’t serve the typical Americanized Chinese dishes. My son got refried rice with chicken. They bring out a hot cast iron pan and mix up the rice, egg and chicken at the table. It was tasty! As always with Chinese, the portions were ginormous. I tried to look up the name of our dish but it appears the website hasn’t been updated since the pandemic and they don’t have a current full menu posted. The takeout link doesn’t work. Regardless, the food is worth the trip to House of Nanking!
Exceptional
The best Cantonese food we have tasted, outstanding flavours, excellent service, reasonable price. Can highly recommend 👌
Good food but terribly rushed to the point it was rude!
Waited at 6 pm on a Saturday for around 15 minutes for a table here. The restaurant itself was very busy and the service way too fast within literally two or three minutes of ordering food, our chow mein arrived before the starters. The food then arrived one by one and everything was with us within 10 minutes.. we still had quite an amount of food left on the table to eat when our bill was placed on the table next to us. Whilst the food was really good, the service was very hurried and it felt like we were on a production line and rushed to get out. I would say from the time we sit down to the time we left was no more than around 40 minutes.. for $160 meal, I wouldn’t have expected that kind of service.
Fantastic Chinatown Food
Wow! There's a reason the line for this restaurant was out the door--the food was inventive and just downright amazing. We let the kitchen choose a parade of dishes for our table of five and everything was tasty, even the cauliflower and dumplings with eggplant had me wishing I could eat more. Definitely get there early to avoid the long line!
Chinese New Year 2024
Went with friends, there was a line outside, but it actually did not take long to get seated. Very friendly and observant staff. Ordered sesame chicken, Beef and the winner WON TONG SOUP. This was totally different with crispy ingredients. Everything was delicious, my favorite was the soup, will come back for that for sure.
Trust Me, He Said. Glad we did!
We have to be gluten free and saw that H of N was sensitive to that situation. We got there just as they were opening and chose to site outside. Do no expect ambience. But, as we sat a gentleman came over to us and asked if he could help. We told him about our condition and he said, no problem. Then he said, "I'm the chef, do you trust me." I was game and said sure. He asked if there was anything we didn't particularly like. I said that I was not overly fond of fish but shellfish was fine. We had no idea what was coming and I really can't tell you what is was now other than it was excellent. The soup was some type of slightly, creamy mussel soup with "crackly" rice (my term). Wow. Then came the boy chow and what I think was sesame beef. Again, excellent. Finally, here came shrimp, probably curried, with apples. I would have never put those two together but again, it was excellent. What a great treat and what great food. I heartily recommend to the gluten challenged and the non-challenged alike.
Customer Service and Time Management issues
Family of 4 ordered after a long day of exploring. 2 dishes came out and 40 minutes later we were still waiting for the other 2 dishes. Asked for ticket so we could leave that was also a wait.
Fun & yummy!
If you’re looking for something differently delicious this is the place. Let the owner or waiter surprise you instead of ordering off menu. We enjoyed a variety of tasty items for lunch - and left stuffed! Buns, dumplings, ribs, crispy beef- all very good. Also enjoyed a cup of flower tea! Give it a try!
House of Never Again
This place gets lots of great reviews so I was excited to get some good Chinese food. I was blown away....by how BAD it was! A lot of the dishes coming out of the kitchen looked tasty. But my dish, ordered on the "vegetarian" section, had chunks of meat in it. When I pointed it out to a server she acknowledged it as breaded chicken and then took the plate away. I wasn't offered another, nor was I offered a discount. The sweet and sour soup was very salty. My friend ordered a beef dish and he said it was nothing special. Beware folks, especially vegetarians.
