A unique experience!!!
Even though we had a small mix-up with the reservation, the chef immediately found a solution for us. Very high quality food, excellent service. Dinner with around 8/10 courses, each better and more special than the other. A truly unique and unforgettable experience!!! The cost is worth the experience! Congrat!!!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional Sushi Chef /Experience
This was a trip we’ve been planning back before Covid. Well we finally made it and the experience far exceeded our expectations. The chef is truly a craftsman. His choice of ingredients along with the presentation were flawless. The explanations of each dish along with the saki pairing really elevated the meal. The chef, the apprentice, the other guests, the fish selection all made for a very memorable evening that we are grateful for and will always cherish. I am in complete agreement with my wife who says this was the best sushi she has ever had. We highly recommend Isana Sushi Bar. We will most definitely return the next time we are in Tokyo.

Hands down this was the best sushi experience of my entire life. It was worth every penny. The nigiri and sashimi were painstakingly and precisely prepared in front of us. The fish was so tender it melted right in our mouths. It was absolutely amazing.

Be the first to ReplyAn Artistic Sushi Treat (Artist to Artist)
I am an artist and appreciate other artists that are true to their craft. Chef Onuki is both mesmerizing and strongly proud of his food creations. I was dazzled by his incredible creations before my eyes. Although I ate approximately 80% of the food provided, the other was too unknown, I enjoyed it 100%. Artists are proud people who stand by their creations and this power lives at Isana. I was the only diner for my meal, upon my dinner’s completion, an elegant Japanese lady came in for her solo dinner. She stated to me it was her favorite place, it is time to give Isana 3 Michelin stars. And for those who feel the Chef is too proud, he is simply a true creator. Enjoy the best. ~ Sir. Tank

They have remodeled and did a wonderful job. The sushi bar is big and has a full array of choices. We decided to have a table dinner. The bar is excellent. I had opakapaka fresh catch not overdone. My husband had a ramen bowl with veggie tempura. It's all good. My martini was dry and chilled. Will be back soon.
Be the first to ReplyIntimate and Enjoyable
We visited Isana on a Friday night in January. It was our first trip to Tokyo and desired a traditional sushi experience. Isana was the perfect balance of intimate dinning while enjoying carefully selected and prepared pieces of sushi. The Sushi Master and Isana Owner spoke perfect English and took time to explain each sushi piece and sake pairing. We enjoyed talking to him about his training and he kindly answered questions we had about Japan. We were also pleased that his apprentice is a female as the sushi industry is typically dominated by males. Overall the experience was as delightful as the food and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a traditional sushi restaurant.
We dined from 7 pm to 11 pm and ate omakase style.
Fantastic fresh handmade sushi in a friendly atmosphere
We went to this lovely little sushi bar after looking around for the top Tokyo sushi places in Tokyo and chose it because of its more informal atmosphere created by Chef Junichi's welcoming approach. The food was simply amazing, fresh as can be and beautifully hand crafted in front of our eyes. I had the sake pairing course which was a great addition to the tasting menu on offer. Best sushi we have ever had, hands down!

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed Chef Junichi's attention to detail and wonderful omakase meal. We read about him in Conde Naste and the experience certainly lived up to the hype.
Not only was the meal wonderful, our highlight was being able to chat with Chef given his fluency in English having spent 10 years in London. We stayed almost 3 hours and chatted with him and other guests about his passion and views on food, and his other hobbies music and fishing.
Memorable and best value fine dining experience I've had.
Simply Incredible
My wife and I came here for dinner. We are both big sushi people and I can say this was better than any Michelin Star omakase we have had in Kyoto, New York or London. Such a warm welcoming friendly man whose personality is only surpassed by his skill with his knife. Highly highly recommend and really healthy portions of sashimi and sushi.

It pains me to write this. After reading Conde Nast's review of Isana and other reviews, we were so excited to have an amazing experience.
We arrived for our reservation and the chef asked us for drink orders and if there were any foods we did not eat. I responded that I do not eat octopus (for personal reasons, but didn't mention this part), but everything else was great. His response: "Well, I don't serve California rolls here." I was stunned; my husband and I looked at each other debating if he was testing us to leave. I responded, "Great. That's why we're here. We've read wonderful things".
Aside from telling us what each dish was, he did not speak to us the rest of the night. It was uncomfortable and not the hospitality we had come to love from Japan. I can only think he was having an "off" night (which we're all entitled to!), but he was not at all the kind person others made him out to be. It seems from the reviews that our experience was not standard for this place. I truly hope this is the case. Perhaps the chef didn't mean to be rude or insulting, but it ruined a night for us that we hoped would be a highlight of our trip.
The sushi selection was excellent, which is why I didn't go below 3 stars. . .our favorite dishes included the bonito, perch, and medium fatty tuna.
If you're truly hoping for a warm, authentic experience, I can not recommend Isana.
(Sushi-Kappo Nakaichi in Kyoto was life-changing though - check my reviews!)
Business
Top quality raw material, original taste without sauces or marinating. Clean not very crowded personal care by the chef himself. Stop Japanese hospitality!
Excellent by all means!!
12 out of 5
Easily a top three meal I've had over the last 25 years (which featured no shortage of fine meals).
A nice place ran by an outstanding professional. Tastefully decorated, the food is out of this world, the suggested sakes match perfectly, impeccable service.
Do yourself a favour and make a reservation well in advance. You won't regret it.
If you go
- they are about 8 minutes' walk from the Roppongi metro station. The bar is on a small street about 20 feet from the intersection - relatively easy to miss in the dark
- set menu, the chef explains each piece as he makes it.
- They do take credit cards. I think we spent about $300 for two, and consider it a bargain for what we got.
- making the reservation: if you don't speak Japanese, just tell "English, please" to the person answering the phone. She will transfer you to the chef.
