Rude hostess
Drove there to order food after work to go just to be told by Mary -who was very busy on her phone- that they donโt do take out despite their website clearly having a separate take out menu. โSorry we gotta fix thisโฆโ ๐
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Japanese food
Japanese owners with excellent service and food. Japanese typical environment. Recommend 100%. I had Unagi Donburi and Mochi.
Be the first to ReplyIt was just ... ok
From the minute I sat down I felt like they were trying to hurry us up - hurry to order (and hurry to leave). Service was just average - kept having to wave our arms to get attention. Food was ok - not outstanding by any means. The reviews say "just like Japan". I don't think so. I've been to Japan (more than once) and this is definitely not like Japan.

I really love this place! Came here several times and itโs always packed! They donโt accept reservation but the service is pretty smooth and fast because I never waited more than 20 minutes. Sushi is very good. My fav is Tuna Carpaccio! Real fresh tuna thin slices with oil and garlic. So yummy!!! Gyoza are to die for! Service is very friendly and kind. Honest prices.

The Best way to describe our dining experience at Izakaya Masa is..."Subarashi"...Wonderful"!
Tucked away in a small business strip mall in the Hillcrest area of San Diego you could easily miss it. The best giveaway to the location is all the people standing outside waiting for a table. This is pretty much the case anytime you go there. Worth the wait....Absolutely! It's usually a 20 - 30 minute wait. There's a nice bar diagonally across the street to grab a drink while you wait.
Once you're seated inside Izakaya Masa you could be in Tokyo. The beautiful & friendly Japanese/American waitressed are right there at your table to take your order. There were three of us and we started our meal with a bottle of cold Nigori House Sayuri Sake..the only way to start a Japanese meal. We also ordered an appitiser of steamed Edamame...very addicting!
If you're hungry...you have found the Mecca for fantastic Japanese food. The portions are big, so don't let yourself get caught up in the many choices on the menu. You know what...forget that, just go crazy and try whatever you want! That's what takeaway boxes are for.
If you're not sure of what it is you may want to order just ask the amazing waitresses. They really help to create such a wonderful atmosphere & vibe at this restaurant. This is a great place to be bold and take a leap of faith. For example, you might be squeemish about ordering eel...don't be! Order the Midori Roll. Your leap of faith will be rewarded.
The Special Rolls on the menu are Fantastic & filling. Try the Midori I mention or the Chicken Katsu...what the heck!..order them both. If you like Tempura try the Sweet Potato or Kabocha (Pumpkin) both are sliced very thin and extremely tasty.
As I said at the beginning, "Subarashi...Wonderful" is the Best way to express how I feel after dining here. I will be back again & again until I have tried everything on the menu....what a wonderful journey this will be!
Just like Japan!
We enjoyed this local Japanese eatery with dishes for everyone. We especially liked the soba noodles and gyoza, since we are not sushi fans. Go at 6 or wait in line.
Be the first to ReplyLate Night ('till 1:00 am) Japanese/Asian Dining for 4
Worth the wait, even though you have a reservation (kinda like the soup NAZI). Located in a strip center, hidden inconspicuously in the middle/gound level. if you can, eat at the counter; the visual experience is better. We ate mostly ALL the "Hot Appetizers" on their list (can you believe $3-10 per?!) Then we ordered the Noodle soup (their specialty; at a price that didn;t go over $12!) and draft beer. This at 11;30 pm! I can definitely say, its the BEST late night eats! Highly Recommended!
Be the first to ReplyHidden Gem but nice food nice ambience
This place is really hidden not easy to find. But seems popular with the locals. Had to wait awhile but was worth the wait.
Portion was just right. My friend and I shared the dishes. Food price was reasonable we had 3 bottles of sake (300ml each) so the bill came up to Usd$112.
Recommend to go if you want to have Jap food.
Delightful Japanese restaurant
After a long day at Legoland and drive to San Diego, my husband felt like he wanted some comfort food and after reading yelp and TripAdvisor reviews, we came here around 6:30pm on Saturday. We were not sure if we were at the right place but when you see the people waiting outside the door we would know this it is. We signed in. probably waited 20 minutes and we got in. The decor was spot on and special. I felt like we were in Japan! There are bar seats and tables. My husband and I ordered fried oyster and ramen and our four years old was having udon. I like the broth as it was not too salty. The ramen noodles was very thin which I did not feel like eating ramen. We were so tired and hungry so we ate as fast as we could. The next day when we talked about it we did think it was good ramen tho. Will visit again next time!
