Hands down best sushi I've had in a long time! Thankfully we live right across the street. Will be back lots!

Food was very fresh and delicious, some of the best fish I've had in Chicago! Service was great, our server was very nice and knowledgeable. However taking off one star because for $300 it felt very rushed. They brought out our dessert when we had just gotten the last course and hadn't finished it yet which wasn't great. They do emphasize the table times beforehand so I can't fault them for that but the pacing on the courses could be better and because of that I'm not likely to come back.

The best of the best!!! Every time I go to Kai Zan, the food is incredible, vibes are amazing, and the staff are awesome!!
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed the food here.
Wow it was very fresh and the presentation was beautiful! Service was good but really fast. I understand the table is reserved for 1.5 hours. But boy do they push you out the second it hits 1.5. It felt like we were being rushed. And for $300 bill I feel I should have been able to take my time a little bit more.
Be the first to ReplyWe went here for my son's birthday.
Sat in a private booth perfect for our party of 6. We all ordered the omakase menu. There was a ton of food for $90 and it was all delicious. They time the meal so you are done in 2 hours and then they politely ask you to leave (we were told when we came that we got 2 hours and that is exactly what we got). The evening was memorable and it is quite a deal for the $90 price tag. Loads of fresh fish. One of the courses had 7 pieces of sashimi and several pieces of nigiri. Even the big eaters in our group left satisfied. They also were very accommodating of food allergies.

This was by far some of the best sushi I've ever had! Went for a dual birthday date and got the Omakase. Each dish was exciting and tasty, we were both stuffed by the end. Perfect place for a special date night!

Um...AMAZING. service was impeccable but the food!! Why is this not a Michelin star restaurant??
Be the first to ReplyGreat Japanese in Westtown.
Mushrooms were kind of dry and menu kind of lacking and vegetables but fish is great

We came for the Omakase experience and were not disappointed! Very good value and a cute little location for a date.
Be the first to ReplyDeliciousness in the city.
We experienced the omakase menu and ordered a few rolls on top of that. Sushi was superior quality. Will definitely go back.

The best meal of amazing bites I've had in many years wonderful service, really nice vibe and food that i would go back for. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWe were regulars at Kai Zan prior to Covid.
What was once really good before is now great. The caliber of their food and service has only increased. We went with another couple for the Omakase dinner. The dishes were delectable and very unique. We go to quite a few other Amici restaurants in Chicago and area and this is by far the most reasonably priced and also creative. It's not a matter of them, putting truffle oil on some fish and using a flame on top. These individual dishes were really creative. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing! This is my favorite restaurant hands down.
I love everything there but my favs are both peals, angry crab, orange rush and the spicy shrimp rolls.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food.
Fresh, inventive sushi. Great service. Some of the best sushi you will find in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely abysmal service for a $1,000 dinner.
When paying so much, I do not expect to be rushed out and rudely told they have other reservations while we are still eating. Other restaurants successfully figure out how to manage capacity without aggressively turning tables--not an experience I wish to have again, I will not be coming back. Also, the location is a dump. Sad!
Be the first to ReplyMagnificent.
Masterful. Marvelous. Those are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind when eating at Kai Zan. The craftsmanship is on another level.Kai Zan is a quaint and very small restaurant, with around 5-6 tables and maybe a maximum of 8-10 seats at the bar. Despite its size, the atmosphere is cozy and intimate. You can't tell by the exterior as there's no visible signage, but once inside, you'll be treated to an experience that's truly unforgettable. I highly recommend sitting at the bar, where you can watch all the magic happen as the chefs expertly craft each dish right in front of you. The level of skill and precision that goes into each plate is truly a sight to behold. We didn't opt for the omakase option as there were a couple of pieces that my partner and I were reluctant to try. So we settled for a la carte instead. We kept some of the adventurous aspect and tried the shooters, still. Below is a list of all our entrees and I'll do my best to describe their greatness to do them justice.Special hand roll - This is where their creativity shined. I have never had a hand roll as delicious as this one. It's wrapped in a special fried taro wrapper. That's right, a fried taro wrapper. It was crunchy, yet flaky and complemented all the fish it held on to. There was even a small delicate brussels sprout on top. I can't imagine anything more elegant.Fiesta maki and Sos maki - To be honest, these were really good but because of the other dishes we had, they were not the most memorable for us.Wagyu fried rice - The most expensive dish at our table but also the most delicious. It is accompanied by quail eggs on top. The most amazing experience was watching our chef cook this dish in front of us, and I was mesmerized by the creation process. Every ingredient was there for a reason, and they enhanced the flavor with every bite.Orange rush - Softly seared salmon on the outside hugging a scallop on the inside. It's a beautiful and buttery creation.Scallop and oyster shooter - the adventurous journey that you need to embark on while you're here. I took several gulps of hesitation to mentally prepare myself, only to be dazzled by the most tasty concoction.Dynamite mussels - a different take on your usual dynamite mussels. They created a special mayo and eel sauce to bring out the flavors of the mussels rather than drowning them in spicy mayo.Green monster - a huge surprise of the night! It's wrapped in avocados on the outside! I have never loved the taste or the texture of unagi, but this one transformed my experience. Every bite was bursting with scrumptious buttery avocados, and a hint of unagi.Char siu - The pork was equally on par with the sushi and wagyu fried rice. It's smoky, fatty, and salty, and is covered in a delicious sauce.Kai Zan takes you on a journey that tests your taste buds and brings them to appreciate the different combinations of food around you. I have never felt the love through food as I did here. I tasted the mastery and the dedication that poured into each dish. Every dish challenged me to be open to new ideas, to savor each bite, and to trust in the chef's vision. I'm so happy to have witnessed such moments at Kai Zan, and I hope to be back here once I step foot back to Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and great ambience too.
Every sushi selection was very fresh and having its own unique flavor-fulness. Presentation of the sushi plates were subtle and colorful. Don't forget the ribeye! Amazing too!!Service was impeccable. The server was very friendly and knowledgeable to explain each dish served. Street parking was easy to find on a weekend too.
Be the first to ReplyTrue to its Michellin star rating.
I came in with high expectations and came out completely convinced. I recommend their Omasake menu, a must try. And for its price, IMO, well worth it - unique combinations of flavors throughout the 10 course meal with each one building layers of pleasant surprises. It ended with a pure and simple cleanser, sashimi. If you force me to choose only 1 dish, it's the mind-blowing oyster & scallop shots.
Be the first to ReplyConsistently amazing.
Spanish tuna had us in tears it was that good. Friendly service and great atmosphere makes for a wonderful experience.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the absolute best eating experiences I've ever had!
One of the absolute best eating experiences I've ever had! An affordable Omakase at a beautiful hole in the wall spot that you can show off to friends and family in the area. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable on every dish and gave tasting notes as well as presentation highlights. I could break down every dish of the Omakase, but that would be ruining it for the rest of you, so, below are a few of my favorites, I would like to highlight.Oyster and scallop shooter: 5/5, two delicious shots featuring fresh shellfish, quail egg, Tabasco, and Tobiko. These were an absolute delight. A complex flavor that worked so well together.Orange Rush: 5/5, a lightly seared scallop wrapped in salmon. It was absolutely delicious, and was certainly one of my favorite pieces of the night.Main: 5/5, I won't give away all of the pieces of this dish, but the char Siu pork was the highlight for me. Crispy on the outside and deliciously fatty, I couldn't get enough.Sashimi: 5/5, a delicious collection of the chefs choice of raw fish. Beautifully crafted and perfectly paired with soy and pickled wasabi a perfect end to a perfect night.Overall: 5/5, I think it was pretty obvious. This is one of my favorite meals this year, and I certainly will be back cannot recommend enough
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best sushi restaurant.
Incredibly fresh, inventive flavorful dishes. The Omakase is always a great choice if your hungry and want a great experience. Small amount of seats so def make reservations. You wont regret it.
Be the first to ReplyThe snowy day gave me the chance to get to Kai Zan finally.
The restaurant is small, and the food is really fantastic, which makes reservations hard. I went solo and sat at the sushi bar for the Omakase. The twin chefs (Melvin & Carlo) created unique flavors based in traditional dishes. The cuts of fish were precise, and the fish was super fresh. Every item kept the high standard. My waiter, Allen, was lovely as were all the staff. They were all pleasant and efficient. Bravo! I will be back as often as possible!
