I am a huge connoisseur of Indian food.
This is some of the best I've ever had. When you go you must try the butter chicken, Lobster Masada or the lamb anything.

Great food! A little different from traditional Indian, but very innovative. I've been here twice and although thier food is great, I'd love to see more variety for vegetarians.

The food was good, I loved the goat cheese naan, the cocktails were good. The service was attentive. I wish the food servings were a bit larger for the price point like the lamb chops. The music playlist was confusing, would have loved more intentionality to set the correct atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyWow, I really enjoyed this restaurant.
We went for the set course Valentine's Day dinner, and I was really worried I wouldn't get anything to eat when I saw the menu! However, they brought me a fabulous, all vegan meal, that left me stuffed! I LOVED the Dragons Coast with rum cocktail, along with the grilled veggies and Zucchini Kofta. I didn't enjoy the quinoa patty, as it had little flavor and felt over cooked. Our server was kind, we always had water re-filled, but it did feel like they were maybe overworked, as it took us half our meal to try and get my husband the spicy sauce and salt and pepper he asked for. When he finally got it, the salt was empty, so that hurt his experience a bit, but overall, really enjoyed this dining experience!

Hype.. not up to the mark.. probably simple Indian restaurant food is more tastier...looks like these they emphasize more packaging and presentation than actually tastiness of food

This place was expensive, and hit or miss with some of the dishes we ordered. I went here for lunch with a friend to celebrate her birthday, and ended up spending $60 just on myself without any liquor. We got the prix-fixed menu as it was cheaper than doing the a la carte. This place is definitely bougie Indian, along the lines of Rasika. I ordered the chicken tikka and would not recommend it. It was bland and overcooked. My second course was the palak paneer. It wasn't bad, but the zucchini kofta was definitely much better. You should order that instead. My third course was the coconut medallions. Again, not a great choice. It was a little dry and kind of dense. The rose ice cream was better. The mocktails were good, though a bit pricey, and I also ordered a masala tea which was nice and creamy. The goat cheese naan was also really good.Personally, I wouldn't come back here, but that's because I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, and I'd prefer something a little more casual (and cheaper), like Pappe over on 14th street.

As someone who lives in the neighborhood I was deeply disappointed to learn firsthand today that this establishment discriminates against people with disabilities. Needless to say I will not be back.

We wanted to pick a special restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we're glad to pick Karma Modern Indian restaurant! The restaurant itself was packed on a Friday evening but the ambiance was very cozy and casual. We ordered Chicken Tikka for starters and that was delicious! For mains we Lobster Masala, Lamb Rogan Josh and naans. The Lobster Masala was awesome and probably the best we've tried! The lamb gravy was delicious but the lamb was over cooked. As a big lamb Rogan Josh fan, I was a bit disappointed, and hence the 4-star review. That said, a terrific restaurant!
Be the first to Reply5/5!Absolutely had a great time here at Karma.
Came here for a nice dinner with high expectations based off the reviews I read, and I can say, I left incredibly satisfied. From the food to service, it was all top-notch!The Food: I went with the Chicken Tikka appetizer, Butter Chicken as my entree and a Palak Paneer as a side dish. Naan bread wasn't included in any of the menu items, so I ordered the Wild Mushroom and Truffle Naan bread. To start in order with the Chicken Tikka, it was absolutely delicious. The chicken was incredibly tender and the Tikka flavor was on point. The Butter Chicken was delicious as well, the chicken was tender, and the sauce was creamy and thick. The Palak Paneer was amazing as well, the spices and the pureed spinach was made very well. And to to pair all of this with the wild mushroom and truffle naan just made it even better! The Service: The service was top tier amazing! All of the staff were incredibly friend and attentive. Water refills were constant and there were plenty of check ups on our meals. Staff were very professional. Can't say how much I enjoyed the service here! The Atmosphere: The restaurant was very well decorated. Upon walking in, it was a very modern/fine dining feel. Very clean and plenty of seating. Overall, a 5/5! Food was amazing and the service was amazing. Absolutely enjoyed my dinning experience here. I'll be back for sure.

Be the first to ReplyIncredibly overpriced for the food but really attentive
Incredibly overpriced for the food but really attentive staff. We ordered quite a few of the main dishes, but as others have mentioned, there were hardly any meat included (I saw maybe two shrimps in my dish). Our total was over $100, which really isn't worth the food you get.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible food and service.
The potato tamarind spheres were my favorite along with the scallops. This place is my top favorite!!
Be the first to ReplyI had a truly divine dining experience.
Service was excellent and attentive. I ordered the zucchini kofta and savored every bite. The wait staff suggested a dessert that was incredible. This is Indian food with a twist, and I wished I could have ordered and eaten 4 different things.

Beautiful restaurant with beautifully presented and well-prepared Indian food. We came for our wedding anniversary dinner and it was well worth it. We started with the dragon's coast (with rum) for me and the navigator for him. Lovely drinks to look at and, most importantly, to drink! It's an interesting mix of flavors in their cocktails and we were both surprised by how much we liked it. For an app we got the quinoa tikki and it was the one real disappointment in the whole meal. The tikki itself has no flavor and without the sauce it's totally bland. With the sauce it's just...fine. Nothing special. Will opt for another app in the future. For our mains we got paneer lajawab, garlic naan, and lamb Rogan josh. The naan was hot and fluffy and absolutely divine. The paneer was so beautifully presented but the real joy was the flavors in the sauce and how it was very clear they were using whole or freshly ground spices and quality ingredients all around. Per my husband the rogan josh was equally high quality and he only wished he got more meat in the dish to balance out the amount of sauce. Our server, who was so attentive and stellar throughout, treated us to some rose ice cream which was wonderfully creamy, rose-y, and a perfect end to our meal. Would definitely recommend if you know your way around Indian food, you want Indian food, but also want something "different" or "new".
Be the first to ReplyWent here with a large party to celebrate a graduation.
Enjoyed the quinoa tikki and the paneer pesto appetizer. Had high hopes for the stuffed turnip(a vegetable I enjoy), but it was not good. The Paneer Lajawab was good as was the Zucchini Kofta. Some people in the party really enjoyed the wild mushroom and truffle oil naan. The Dal Makhani was pretty good too. The housemade rose ice cream and pistachio kulfi were tasty. The decor and ambience and hospitality were great!

Awesome ambience and great food! Lot of classic Indian dishes done well, as well as some more less-common takes like lobster. In particular, really enjoyed the paneer lajawab which stood out to me. In comparison, the chicken chettinad and butter chicken were good, but were not any different than what you'd see in other Indian restaurants.Service was also excellent, and the waitress serving our table was very helpful & suggested plenty of dishes that were hits for our medium-sized group.

Came for a birthday dinner with a group of 6 so we got to try a lot!tamarind potato sphere: I liked this for its uniqueness, it's a fresh but small servingpaneer pesto: i LOVED this. the sauce was spicy, the cheese had a nice little char and you got two i'd say large mozerlla size sticks of cheese. I could have eaten a huge plate of thisseekh kebab: also great! a nice again spicy mint sauce on the bottom, a good size serving and bursting with flavorsnapper: meh. It just tasted like fried fish with tartar sauce (which to be fair, is the description)minced chicken naan: surprisingly good. i don't know how you'd use this to scoop up other food, but i enjoyed eating it on its owngarlic naan: a well executed classicwild mushroom and truffle oil naan: surprisingly bland! we weren't sure if the screaming flavor of everything else just maked this one, but it was not as exciting as we imagined.I'll also note their naan is thicker than almost any other place i've beenlamb roganjosh: really good! it's got some heat and the lamb is tenderpalak peneer: STANDOUT. wow was this good - i don't know what kind of magic they put into the sauce but this was the best execution of palak peneer i've personally ever hadlemon rice: meh. it's fine but their normal rice is really good so I don't think this is worth the $9brussel sprouts: these were mushy and bland and just not good. our table of 6 barely touchedcoconut medallions: these were kind of dry and not all that excitingindian style ice cream: excellent! Creamy and very flavorful - unique flavors as wellOur service was a bit lacking - could be understaffed issues. All in all, it was a good meal, I think if we hadn't gone crazy with the sides the price would have been more reasonable.

I visited here with a friend who said this was one of the favorite spots in the area, so we stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday. It was wide open, not many other diners here. I ordered the stuffed paneer dish and, at the suggestion of the server, my friend and I each ordered a truffle mushroom naan. I was torn between the paneer dish and the zucchini/chickpea one, so I asked the server. He said guests tend to prefer the paneer but he likes the zucchini. Because stuffed paneer isn't something I see often, I went with that. It was good but I preferred the tomato gravy (which was phenomenally seasoned) over the paneer. It had a kind of chewy texture that I didn't love. Probably would've enjoyed the alternate better (guess I should listen to the server)! The naan was plenty for two and I wish we'd just split one because we ended up with leftovers that neither of us could take. Id also agree with other comments that the flavor of the mushrooms/truffle is muted and you'd probably be happy with the traditional naan.Overall great food but very expensive... each of us spent $37 for a total of about $78. It's a nice atmosphere and good food but be prepared to pony up!

Pros: great ambience, good drinks, good enough serviceCons: This restaurant didn't live up to the hype. Food is mediocre, and expensive. I was expecting Rasika-like experience since I believe they're in the same league of Indian restaurants; it was bit of a disappointment going in with that expectation. Also, we spent $235 for four people with a drink each.It was an okay experience at Karma however I'll be sticking to Rasika going forward.

Dined at Karma right before a show and came right when they opened at 5p, so got a table with no issues, even with no reservations. The choice of non-alcoholic drinks is limited, but I got the Dragon's Coast drink and it was delicious. Got the Turnip Chicken for dinner as I wanted to try something new other than the usual butter chicken or paneer, but I think I should have stuck to one of those. The dish was very spinach heavy which I did not care for. For dessert, we got the rose ice cream and and warm carrot halwa, both delicious. Also got a round of masala tea, which unfortunately tasted inauthentic and bland. Our waiter was amazing, provided great service all the way through, and answered any questions I had. I would probably dine here again, but maybe order a different dish next time.
Be the first to ReplyHad an amazing engagement dinner at Karma.
We booked a private room since we were a group of 20+ people. Our menu was pre-selected and I really think everything we had was delicious. Some of the best Indian fusion food I've had!For appetizers we got tandoori cauliflower, paneer pesto, lamb kabobs, chicken tikka, and amritsari snappers. All amazing, but the chicken tikka really stood out. For entrees we had the lobster masala, chicken chettinad, lamb rogan Josh, zucchini kofta, and heirloom paneer. Lobster masala was the highlight of my meal. So delicious and flavorful, and the presentation was gorgeous! For sides we got pindi chickpeas, grilled okra, garlic and plain naan, and latcha paratha. For dessert we had pistachio kulfi, coconut medallions, and carrot halwa. Amazing food aside, our service was great and everyone was so helpful. With a large party we had someone attending to us at all times and made sure everything was coming on time. For private events, Karma Modern Indian is a great place to go to, and I will continue to recommend them in the future!

On a recent trip to Washington dined at this elegant contemporary restaurant. The thought and style of the menu had a skillful twist on traditional Indian cuisine. The freshness and respect for the flavors of the herbs and ingredients made each dish unique and exciting. Throughout all our choices we could taste the individually blended spices, fresh ingredients, piquant sauces enjoyed with the outstanding breads. Such clever melding of traditional flavors - nothing was overpowering or heavy. The custom drinks, beer and wine choices were fun and interesting.Servers were enthusiastic and skilled. A great meal - highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWe came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
We were glad that we picked this restaurant to celebrate our special day with our family. The ambiance was very modern. When we checked in, we had to show COVID vaccination to comply with COVID guidance in DC. It was very smooth. There was no issue. As an appetizer TANDOORI CAULIFLOWER: Giant tandoori Cauliflower. I loved the tandoori spice that gave me a kick of hotness. AMRITSARI SNAPPER: Fried Red Snapper: It was nicely fried, meaning it was not too oily. The fish was very meaty. Yummy WILD MUSHROOM & TRUFFLE OIL NAAN: I did not get much truffle oil, but I felt that the bread gave me a luxurious feeling. The size of naan was smaller than other regular Indian restaurants. LOBSTER MASALA: I do not know how they make the curry. It was flavorful. I wish there was more lobster meat. Chief special: venison curry: The curry was nicely made. I could tell that they spent a lot of time to make the curry because the flavor was so dense and tasty. Lastly, Drink: TEMPLE OF SALT 2: I love the drink that has egg white. It was very smooth. WAKE UP CALL: It got a mix of coffee and chocolate. All the dishes that we had except cauliflower were not spicy and has a lot of Indian flavor. All the dishes were not heavy at all. I really enjoyed the food here. I highly recommend this restaurant. I can cook many Indian dishes myself, but I am not re creatable the dishes that they make.
Be the first to ReplyPretty disappointing.
I'm a huge Indian foodie, and though the menu was interesting, our experience was not great. My boyfriend ordered the Chef Special which was supposed to be a " spicy venison. " The plate came out on the bone as what I assumed to be a venison thigh? The waitress couldn't even tell us what part of the deer it was, not to mention the taste was gamey, and it was not at all spicy (and yes, I've had venison many times before). It would've been nice to know the price + that the portion was so small and on the bone... this is not the saucy, Indian mezze style that we were looking for.In addition, the waitress forgot one of our plates despite us being the only table in the entire restaurant. The few positive notes were that my drink (Éléphant Tusk) was fantastic, and my entree (chicken chettinad) was good. Was it worth $45? No.
