Kiraku Berkeley Reviews from The Last Year
FINALLY got the chance to come to Kiraku 2 years after I
FINALLY got the chance to come to Kiraku 2 years after I graduated from Berkeley. I had no idea such an amazing Japanese restaurant was right under my nose without ever having tried it before. For some reason, I was not able to join the Yelp waitlist before getting there, so I waited close to 40 minutes for a table. It was well worth the wait though. The food was absolutely tasty and fresh. The sashimi was really unique and different from the typical salmon, tuna, etc. I am not the biggest tempura fan, but the corn tempura was really good and different!! Out of all the skewers, the pork belly skewer was my favorite; it was the perfect balance between tender and fatty. My only complaint was that the uni carbonara pasta was really small; I was surprised at how small the dish was but nevertheless was still delicious. This place is by no means cheap, but it was definitely worth the money. I would definitely love to come back again as I thought this place was spectacular from the vibes to the food to the service... to everything!!
My friend and I made Yelp reservations, mine at 5:30 pm and
My friend and I made Yelp reservations, mine at 5:30 pm and theirs at 5:33 pm. The estimated wait time was 6:45 pm for them and 7:45 pm for me. I highly recommend making your reservation on time, given the significant hour difference in wait times for only a 3-minute difference in reservation times. Alternatively, arriving at the opening and waiting is also a viable option, as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis (with reservation priority). However, they will allocate open tables to waiting parties if the reserved guests do not check in. You'll need to check in with the host about 10-20 minutes before your estimated reservation time, as notified via text. Parking was relatively easy in Berkeley at night, with street parking available off the main streets of Telegraph. The shop was extremely small and could host a maximum of 20-30 people, so accommodating large parties without a reservation might be challenging. After check-in, we waited about 10 minutes for the next available seats. The service was efficient, with all dishes arriving within 10-20 minutes. 10/10 Corn Tempura - $7: This was the standout dish of our meal. The tempura batter was super crispy and not oily or greasy at all! There were plenty of corn chunks, which were semi-sweet. The green tea salt added a wonderful counter-taste, making it the perfect sweet and salty dish. We should have ordered more! 8/10 Suzuki Carpaccio - $14: The fish was incredibly fresh and of great quality. The slices were very thin, and the sauce leaned towards the vinegary side. Overall, it was a solid choice. 7/10 Yuba Spoons - $18: These were a bit overhyped in my opinion. They featured good-quality ikura (salmon roe) and very little uni (sea urchin) pieces atop creamy tofu skin. The creaminess from the tofu was the best part. It's worth trying once, but I would skip it next time. 8/10 Black Cod Miso - $18: The cod was cooked well, with flaky and tender meat. The miso flavor was moderate and came with ume (plum) slices on the side, which provided a sour contrast to the taste. 7/10 Agedashi Tofu - $9: This dish included 4 pieces of tofu that were medium soft. They didn't break apart when picked up, which was good, and they held their structure with a slight jiggle. They were made well! However, the thickened dashi sauce was light in flavor, so there's room for improvement here, as the tofu itself is plain in taste and only contributes to the texture.

I've been to Kiraku twice since I got back from Japan and the vibes are perfect izakaya like. The food is fabulous, like you would expect in Japan. Order anything black cod. So flippin good! Pig ears were great and interesting Uni was perfect Uni pasta was ok. I don't really understand the allure to uni pasta. I'd rather have them separate to taste my uni. Without alcohol the bill isn't too crazy. Come in happy to know you gotta spend $50, cause it's gonna be worth the money. And you can easily get a bunch of small dishes and one big entree for two or three people and the price will be around $50-75 a person.
Insanely delicious.
True Japanese Izakaya vibes - not stuffy/hoity-toity like the American ones.
Came at 5 before they opened to join the waitlist and
Came at 5 before they opened to join the waitlist and didn't get seated until 7:15 and this place is honestly not worth the wait or the hype. We were told by the host at 5:30 that if the people who made a 6pm reservation didn't show then we would get their table, so we stood outside for an hour in the cold and rain. Not sure why she would say this because not many people wouldn't show up for a reservation without notifying the restaurant. If we knew the wait was going to be 2 hours we would've gone somewhere indoors to kill time. Yuzu salmon crudo tostada - 6.5/10 Grilled squid 6/10 Beef tongue 8/10 Corn fritter 8/10 Okinomiyaki - 7/10 Cod nanban - 6.5/10 Mini chirashi don - 7.5/10 Uni carbonara - 7/10 Dessert - 7/10 I would only come here if I had a reservation and it wasn't on my own dime. Disappointing considering all the hype.

Cozy, intimate restaurant with the best service with a smile in Berkeley. I eat a lot of Japanese food and the freshness of the sashimi was surprising! We unfortunately weren't super hungry due to a late lunch so we enjoyed bites more than "meal" type dishes. What I totally recommend: . Sashimi Sampler, very fresh . Salmon sashimi, creamy . Corn Tempura, familiar yet unique . Agedashi Tofu, generous sauce . Fresh fish tempura - also lovely Would try something else next time: . Nasu Miso, too sweet . Beef intestine skewer, too rich but had a bone marrow feel to it if you like that . Beef tongue, not particularly standout . Yuzu chicken udon, odd essence Tip: Definitely make a reservation.

Thank you to the waitress yesterday Saturday evening that just went above and beyond. She brought out a tray of sake cups so we could choose our own cups (fun!). All our food orders came out perfectly cooked and timely. Our water and table was cleared out quickly. This has been the best experience we had restaurant dining in a while.

This place was amazing, it was completely packed and we still had to wait 30 minutes despite our reservations at 9pm. They have a minimum price per person I believe it was $30 but it showed $50 on Yelp. The place was pricey but it was the perfect Japanese tapas place. Everything was delicious and it tastes authentic and had amazing flavors. I would definitely come here again for a special occasion.
Excellent food, cozy setting and friendly hosts.
We thoroughly enjoyed everything ordered. Very much looking forward to coming again
I would highly recommend getting a reservation for this
I would highly recommend getting a reservation for this place because it is super busy all the time. I've been wanting to eat here so badly and finally I decided to get a reservation for a Friday night. I was in a group of 3 people and we were seated soon after we arrived. The restaurant is a small, cozy place that smells amazing! The menu has a lot of options and it got overwhelming really quickly because everything sounded so good and we wanted to try as many different things as we could. Our server was super friendly and was really helpful in recommending popular dishes. The server also recommended that we order from the specials menu first and then from the regular menu. Although the restaurant was very busy, the service did not suffer and our waters/drinks were refilled promptly. Highlights: beef intestine skewer, jumbo squid, unagi skewer, and corn tempura. All of these were so delicious! The beef intestine is a must try! For dessert my sister and I shared the sweet potato brûlée and it was great! The taste wasn't too sweet and you can also taste the sweet potato. Overall, I would come back to try their new stuff and I think that this place is a great gem in Berkeley.
Wow!
Kiraku presents an unassuming image but offers an authentic experience. Having lived in Japan for three years and now three years back in the USA, Kiraku is the most-like-Japan restaurant we’ve visited outside of Japan. The menu is extensive and not focused so much on sushi and sashimi, though there is enough of that to satisfy. Instead, we tried their anchovy w/ broccoli, red miso with clam soup, yuzu chicken udon, tuna 3-ways, crab nanbanzuke, croquettes and saba, among other items. Everything had a real taste of Japan. Even the dishes and serving ware was just as we experienced in Japan. The sake selection was decent and we tried a local sake to our satisfaction. The only less-than-perfect item was the nigiri hotate which is a tough item to offer in the US. Oh, the servers were quite knowledgeable and everything was delivered as described.
Delicious food, lovely atmosphere, wonderful staff. Will come again!
Such a treat to eat here, I was feeling a little homesick (disclaimer, not from Japan) but taking myself out for dinner here really cheered me up. As the previous reviews seem to state some different information from my experience, I will say there didn't seem to be an extra charge to use my credit card, but there is a minimum order of $20 per person, which becomes $25 for groups of 6 or more. It gets very busy and there will inevitably be a long queue, so make sure you reserve a spot! I ordered a lot for my party of one: the yuzu salmon tostada, fried chicken cartilage, the shrimp tempura with mayo, and the uni carbonara pasta. For an izakaya place I was hoping to sample more of the alcohol on offer, but I could only manage 1 pint of Asahi. The flavours are well balanced, and the batter was the delicate kind of crispy which you'd expect for izakaya snacks. Paired well with the beer too! I had a great time alternating between the fried stuff and taking in the busy atmosphere. It is quite loud so do prepare to order in a loud voice, but ultimately I view it as part and parcel of the vibe. Unfortunately my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I didn't manage to eat the uni carbonara in-house, so I did ask for it to go. The staff were very lovely and accommodating to pack it up for me, and it did come with the welcome warning that the fresh uni would not last for very long. If they're reading this, I'd like them to know that as soon as I got home I mustered up the space to finish the ikura and uni with some of the pasta and it was bloody delicious. Chefs, I'm sorry for the trouble that I caused, but know that your effort and ingredients did not go to waste. I happened to be able to make some room for dessert, so I ordered a matcha Mont Blanc. It had just the right texture and sweetness and wasn't comically huge so it was a great end to the meal. The waitresses seemed amused by my defeat in the face of my rather ambitious order, but the service really made me feel something special. Thanks so much for making my experience awesome!

Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!

Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
