Ever wanted to experience living in a shanty town? Now’s your chance! On the website this place looks quite good, playground facilities, lake, cafe and bar etc. The actual experience was somewhat different. After we paid and checked in we went to the other side of the site to try the water slide at the lake only to discover the lake was closed off with 6ft metal fences due to a “toxic bacterial” problem in the water. To be fair this wasn’t the fault of the site but there was no mention that their main leisure facility was closed at anytime when booking or checking in. The on site restaurant is an 80’s style Chinese restaurant which offers an outside bar in the car park. So you can enjoy a beer whilst feeling the breeze of cars and feral kids rushing by on bikes and pedal cars. You can treat yourself by going back to the camping site bar to experience the welcoming atmosphere of a 70’s motorway services. There you can sit on the sloping concrete patio intoxicated by the mixed smell of strong tobacco and blocked drains. Though you can enjoy the blocked drain smell over much of the site. Once the critical mass of children has been achieved the portable arcade (think fairground trailer) opens about 8pm offering plenty of opportunities to spend 5 euros on the coin pushers or even more on the claw machine to try and win a cuddly toy worth 2 euros. Or even to my surprise (given its kids playing the machines) win a cigarette lighter. Having fleeced their parents of all the coins the kids all head to the filthy playground, to get themselves covered in the fine dusty earth that seems to give them all the authentic Oliver Twist level of grubbiness - don’t worry they’ll all be found later bathing in the shower block sinks. They have to use the sinks as despite the fairly high night camping rate they charge extra for the showers! This is managed by a card system requiring a 25 euros deposit and the shower cost on top. The shower block themselves have 4 showers in the gents (and I assume the same for the ladies) which is woefully too few for the hundreds of people staying on site. So expect to queue. If you need the loo, be sure to avoid the cubicles with the missing or broken seats and even consider taking your own soap as the dispenser will likely be empty. If you have children on your own with you, they can look forward to being cornered and threatened by the marauding gangs of kids who seem to be long term resident on site. My 9 year old was understandably surprised to be surrounded and intimidated by several kids years older than him because he talked to his older sister and they took offence to him speaking to his own family, though this did follow his refusal to handover his football to them to keep. When picking a pitch head for the middle in line with reception. I assumed from the site plan the tree lined edge would be better but this seems to be predominantly ramshackle long term pitches of outdated caravans and sheds, many patched up with tarpaulins for that authentic shanty town look and feel. Next to us what an eyesore of tarps wrapped around a frame akin to a market stall and housing 10 people, clearly living there long term. Ultimately the site has the potential to be nice if they removed some of the long term tenants bringing the place down.
