Excellent
Cuisine with delicious flavors and textures. In addition, well advised by the waiter, we chose to share a main course for 2 (not being big eaters) with tasty accompaniments. We ended up with a very very reasonable bill given the quality of the meal. The service is perfect and if you stay like us at the Vanderlust Hotel you don't even have to leave the hotel to go to the restaurant. The only 2 points to improve would be the somewhat noisy room and the crazy price of wine, which is unfortunately quite common in Singapore. We will definitely return there with pleasure during our next visit to Singapore
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic beautiful food
Brilliant food and very authentic. We had the crab, yes a little expensive. $118 for 700g but beautifully cooked and great curry sauce. The prawns were a highlight too. Will definitely go back
Be the first to Reply"a magical experience once you figure out how to get pass the mystical door"
This spot is a nice spot to get out of the Singporean tropical weather and have a nie little trip down to Sri Lanka. We tried the duck, fish, egg and plan poppers, juke 5 and the annasi punch. 5/5 on the service, 5/5 on the menu. 1/5 on the main door which no one - and I mean no one could open. The owner would do well to replace the door as it is impossible to know that "that is the main door" and it swings inside from the right. Some simple signs would help me write only nice things in this review. Hence I title this "a magical experience once you figure out how to get pass the mystical door"
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Space for Modern Sri Lankan Fine Dining
Kotuwa is a lovely ambience. It is beautiful to look at, with friendly service and the low lighting and hip music that gives a restaurant great buzz. If you want to enjoy a variety of dishes, it is probably best done with friends. You could eat well here as a couple, but Sri Lankan food is made to be shared and Kotuwa works best with several curries and something like their lamb shank or whole fish. The wine list and cocktails are on the pricey side, but the food is not expensive and the menu is a fabulous, modern take on the cuisine. It is not all meat-based and you could eat very well here as a vegetarian. Service staff are great at keeping your water glass filled and appearing at just the moment you want them. Everything about Kotuwa is a class act and you are guaranteed of a great night out here.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Srilankan food, good service
This was our second visit to Kotuwa, this time with friends. The food was fantastic, with each and every dish we had ordered (and we ordered quite a few) being a delight in terms of taste, flavours and presentation. It’s hard to choose a favourite - but if I had to choose would recommend the crab cutlets, the chicken kottu, the lychee pickle and the green mango curry which were outstanding. The beef cheek fry and the prawn devil were both delicious as well. The portion sizes were quite decent for a group of 4. The ambience was great, the energy vibrant and the service was attentive. Definitely coming back again.
Be the first to ReplyGood for Sri Lankan food but really overpriced
I heard so many good things about this place but after visiting twice, unfortunately I feel the hype isn’t justified. The food is pretty good, but it doesn’t feel like they’ve really elevated the classic Sri Lankan dishes or put any sort of novel twist on it, so it feel like you’re being served very overpriced street food. No complaints about the quality, just didn’t think it was worth the hype and the hefty bill.
Be the first to ReplyUtterly Disappointing Dinner
We read so much about Kotuwa and SO look forward to finally get there for a meal. Took the reviewers' advice to "seek help" from waitress on our orders, as it is our first visit to the restaurant. Turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. We ordered crab cutlet, mutton roll and hopper as recommended by so many other diners. Waitress then advised that we order the pork dish and the dallo baduma - which is a squid dish. We ended up with a dinner that is a totally DRY dinner with NO sauce nor any sort of curry/broth to accompany our hopper . Everything was just bland and awfully hard to swallow with no kicks nor highs to our palette. It is a very far cry from any of the Indian dinners that we have always love. I think our sommelier felt sorry for us and knew that our dinner was an absolute disaster - she kindly gave us a free bowl of dahl so that we can have some "sauce" to get on with our meal. The pork was truly awful - it was tough, dry and totally devoid of any taste, the spices did not get into the pork at all. We were told that this dish will be removed from the menu soon - they should!! Chef Rishi should just go try this dish himself and he will understand what we experienced. The squid was fried and again one can barely taste the little bit of spices that was swimming in the oil around the squids. We did not bring wine because corkage is sky high at $70. So we thought that we will just order from the restaurant. After 2 selections - both were not available. We gave up and just got 2 glasses to start with the meal, thinking that we will order more wine as we progress with the meal. But at about $24++ per glass, we had 2 very low quality wines. Nett, we left after 45 minutes, feeling totally let down on a Saturday night...
Be the first to ReplyBest Sri Lankan Food in Singapore
What a find. Location wise it sits in the Little India area as part of a hotel. The atmosphere is chilled and relaxed- and we started with a couple of margaritas to relax. The menu is great and extensive enough not to confuse. Ask for help if advice needed. We had duck rolls to start followed by hoppers, mango curry, beef and fish, along with the daal all of which was fabulous. Cannot recommend highly enough and refreshingly not too pricey for Singapore.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but very unpleasant experience
No question about it: foodwise, the kitchen team delivers what's expected. All dished were tasty, very well presented and served in satisfying portions (The pickled lychees were just exceptionnal!!). What spoiled the evening for us was the behaviour of certain guests who acted as if they were owning the place (speaking loudly, behaving erractically, patroling the dining room..) with no reaction from the restaurant manager at all. Proper management skills would have dictated for the latter to intervene and monitor this confusion. The apologies presented upon our departure and the promise of a discount (yet to appear on the final bill) were "too little, too late."
Be the first to ReplyA great surprise!
Original dining room within the hotel, with a warm traditional style. The staff was very good, friendly and professional; you can feel they are glad and proud to assist and serve you. The crab curry was simply outstanding, finger licking good, and we almost finish it all (the serve is very generous). We also had a couple of sides such as mutton croquettes (very good) and fried calamari (good) and rice. Really a great dinner, not cheap but succulent.
Be the first to ReplyHaute Sri Lankan fare
Kotuwa, Dickson Road: Haute Sri Lankan fare by Rishi tracing his roots. No newcomer to the scene, having wedged successful Cheek Bistro, Cloud and now Fool firmly in his culinary belt, each with a distinct character. Kotuwa has a dash of Tim Burton feel with a wooden horse riding at the entrance. You won’t miss the 2 upcycled metal chandeliers that overlook the room - lending a muscly industrial feel. It’s otherwise an eclectic theme here - flamingo wall paper, wooden tables, baby blue decorative pieces, all cloaked by the dim lights. Food is why you’re here - it’s truly outstanding. We had Malu Baduma - crispy perch masterfully sliced open and served to look like it’s still swimming away from the sizzling wok. The sauce is amazing. Crab croquettes were perfectly moulded and fried. Murunga Kiri Hodi were vegetable stalks (do not ingest all) with soft runny quail eggs. Buffalo Curd Parfait dessert looked like silken tofu but it’s a smooth ice cream sitting corn caramel. I don’t remember our cocktails but the one in the elephant mug is the ladies preferred. The service is fabulous - we enjoyed our conversations and jokes exchanged. It’s quite a standout character from the rest of the restaurants. #eatstylishtravelstylish
Be the first to ReplyNot cheap but really good food and service
I LOVED the food and service at Kotuwa. The meals were brilliant especially the Duck Curry. The service was exceptional. The prices are a bit high especially for the hopper but more than made up in quality of the food and service.
Be the first to ReplyFlavour explosion
Kotuwa is inside a hotel in Little India area. From the very beginning I knew it would be great. We were greeted warmly at the doot and brough inside to a beautifully decorated room, rattan furniture, pattern wall paper, warm lights. The atmosphere is lovely from the get go. Big props for having lots of vegan options although they are not marked as such on the menu so you have to ask to confirm. The banana blossom fritters are delicious and are served with the best spicy ketchup. A perfectly seasoned dal with a real kick, coconut sambol and a crisp hopper are great compliments to the meal. The star for me is the ash plantain curry, meaty plantain cooked in a dry style curry. Definitely don't skip the cocktails, they are as delicious as they are pretty
Be the first to ReplyGo, you will not regret it!
Amazing experience... Cool vibe, superbly nice and attentive service... And mind blowing food - taste explosion :)... Surprising is watalappam tart dessert, definitely a must!
Be the first to ReplyFirst sri lankan restaurant i've been too it won't be the last
Been to lots of "indian" restaurants none of them in India. But this was my first wholly sri lankan experience. I found the taste a little more subtle than indian food I'd had before. We particularly enjoyed the crispy pork belly dish, the hoppers and the kottu. We had a few other dishes for our group of 4. All them were great as was the setting and the beer.
Be the first to ReplyTop Drawer.
Everything about Kotuwa is top drawer, the service, the decor, the music, the drinks, the ambience, even the waiting area before you take your dining seats is great and most importantly the food, it blew me away. Great flavours, generous portion sizes and fairly priced.
What the team has put together here is a brilliant addition to the Singapore F&B scene, a notable mention goes to the Sri Lankan mud crab curry which was delicious - simply gravy all over your face with no shame delicious! Thank you Kotuwa team. :)
Wonderful atmosphere
Love the upbeat and chic atmosphere in this restaurant. The food is very tasty and fairly priced SP you can try multiple dishes.
Paired with nice and beautiful cocktails and great service from the bearded bartender you shouldn't miss out Kotuwa.
Finger licking good
Excellent food, great ambience and good service. The restaurant truly shares the taste of Sri Lanka in their food, The selection is not overwhelming and each dish had its own distinct flavor It was indeed a good place to go with a group of friends.
You need to make a reservation as the place an be busy. Situated i Wanderlust Hotel on the Ground fllor.
Fun Dinner With More Hits Than Misses
Was treated to a lovely birthday dinner here by a couple of close friends and it was an enjoyable experience. Taking over the premises of the former Audace at Wanderlust Hotel, this new eatery serves Sri Lankan food.
We visited the country just before lockdown in 2019 and enjoyed the food, so were looking forward to this dinner. We loved the calamari in sambal sauce which is similar in taste to the Chinese garoupa fried in sambal, and the mutton rolls - which were nicely spiced - as well as the brinjal, which went so well with the yellow rice. The egg and plain hoppers were also made fresh, and were light and airy. The seabass curry was okay, though I found it rather one-dimensional tastewise, mostly of coconut without any spice. The cashews were large and creamy in taste, while I did not really like the spiced lychee starter, but other diners liked it.
Service was quick, efficient and fun, as the wait staff had good banter and jokes with diners.
Kotuwa - when you're not actually allowed to go to Sri Lanka, go here instead
On an extremely regular basis I enjoy researching and discovering restaurants that I want to try next - the food was one of the main deciding factors in moving to Singapore after all. Since the last lockdown, I have made it even more of an obsession and have typed up a list of all the restaurants I have reserved until the end of the year, along with the menu choices I plan on devouring with my husband.
During one of my research moments, I very serendipitously stumbled across which is now one of my favourite restaurants, Kotuwa. I have never actually been to Sri Lanka or tried its delectable food, but it has always been on my bucket list. Just a pity we can't actually travel anywhere right now! However, Kotuwa definitely helped to make me feel like I was on holiday doing what I always love to do - eat the glorious local food.
We started off the evening with the Crab Cutlet and Mutton Rolls. Any time I see the word 'croquette' on a menu I have to have it, so the Sri Lankan style croquette, with spiced crab meat brandade was a definite must. It did not disappoint, as the gloriously fried outer shell gave way to what can only be described as a heavenly mushy centre of tender crab and potato. As for the panko crumbed spice mutton rolls, I would like to have those as a starter to every meal for the rest of my life. They were perfectly fried on the outside, while the mutton on the inside was still beautifully moist and spiced. With the addition of the spicy tamarind dipping sauce, the heat in my mouth was sensational.
Next to arrive was the Chicken Kottu. I have had this before, but did not realise until now that it was a popular Sri Lankan street food dish. This was, without a doubt, the best kottu that I have tried, as it was far less greasy than previous versions that I have experienced. The rotti to chicken ratio was perfect and the gravy was lovely, but I did feel like it could have done with a bit more to really amp up the flavour. However, the Seeni Sambol that we also ordered was a fantastic addition that more than made up for the lack of gravy.
Talking of Seeni Sambol, this unassuming bowl of spiced caramelised onion with tamarind was so delicious with each of our dishes that we ordered another portion to take away with us and added it to every meal that we cooked over the next couple of days.
Now, let's move on to my favourite dish of the night - the Lamb Curry. This boneless lamb shoulder braised in Sri Lankan red curry was an absolute highlight. The meat just fell apart as soon as I picked it up with my fork. On hindsight, I should have used a spoon. I am very used to Thai red curry, but this Sri Lankan version seemed to have some Indian influence to it as well. If you were to ask me what my favourite cuisine was, I would always say Thai and Indian (plus Italian), so this curry was a total wonder to me. I think Sri Lankan may be rising higher in my favourite foods list. What really got me as well was both the plain and egg hoppers that mopped up all of that curry sauce and became a flavour bomb in my mouth.
Last but certainly not least was the Yellow Curry of Sea Bass. This was a crispy fillet of sea bass in a rich coconut gravy. When a menu tells you that something is going to be crispy, then you expect it to be crispy, and this was sea bass was undoubtedly incredibly crispy. It had clearly been cooked outside of the curry sauce because how else could you get that crisp goodness? The yellow curry sauce that it arrived in was, once again, very different from the Thai yellow curry that I am used to, as it had a richer, spicy and smoky taste rather than sweet. I absolutely adored it. The hoppers also were a great addition to help soak up all of that sauce, and next time I'm back I will make sure to profusely thank the waiter that suggested we try the hoppers rather than go for the rice.
Finally, the Lion Stout from Sri Lanka that we drank along with our meal was so silky smooth and light for a stout that I probably could have had several more (see first picture). I enjoyed the food so much here that I have already booked to go again in a month and try more of the options on the menu. I'm thinking the Isso Devil stir fried prawns with ginger, green chilli and tomatoes, plus the Dallo Baduma crispy fried calamari tossed in chilli butter and curry leaves will be my next hit. See you soon, Kotuwa
Spicy experience
Great environment, great staff.
The food was great but too spicy for me. I lost my sense of taste after the first few spoons of sauce.
We tried the local cocktails but were a bit disappointed by the size of the ice block.
Overall a good experience though a bit expensive for the result.
How did this become a Michelin Bib gourmand winner?
Visited Kotuwa as the restaurant was named a Michelin Bib gourmand winner. We've been to several Michelin Bib gourmand winners so we were expecting a good value-for-money dinner experience. We ordered 5 dishes (including a 6 dollar egg hopper and dessert) and a bottle of wine. Total bill in excess of 250 sgd!!!! Surprise!! Wow! Food was ok, the wine was ok priced at 120 bucks or so but 5 dishes (one egg hopper at 6 bucks.., cheek, jackfruit curry, dessert, and chicken kottu in small portions) at about 120 bucks for a Michelin bib gourmand winner? How did that happen? Aren't bib gourmand winners hawker center food price levels way, way, way lower than that??? I don't blame the restaurant. I do wonder about the Michelin system.
Be the first to ReplyExotic and spicy!
Due to the pandemic, we could arrange for delivery.
We ordered a wide range of dishes to try. Some dishes turned out to be super spicy - like the beef Cheek. The Onion Sambal was delicious: well balanced and awesome. We enjoyed the Pork Belly and coconut cabbage dishes. Will skip the beetroot next time. The mutton was good too. Overall the cuisine was not as memorable as we expected it to be.
All round excellent
Food was really good, every dish tasty and well presented, cocktails excellent with good non alcohol cocktails also. Great atmosphere, ambience and very good staff. Highly reccomend.

Fantastic experience, the staff were friendly and passionate about the food & their jobs. The food was first class, it took us right back to Sri Lanka, we had the Lamb, Prawn, Sea Bass & Chicken + sides and it was all outstanding, such delicate flavours, leaving with you with that lovely warming feeling, without your mouth being on fire. High recommend it, it’ll be our new favourite restaurant. Well done guys . 👍👍👍👍
