Half kaiseki half sushi Omakase experience
Service was very good, all the servers that brought out the dishes and sushi described everything that was being served. After you finish with your current course they clear your table expeditiously and serve the next course soon after so youโre not sitting very long without any food. Before our meal the server recommend a few sakes based on your personal flavor preference and let us sample some before we finalized what we wanted to drink for our meal. Atmosphere was your typical high end modern omakase interior that primarily comprises of wood. We were seated at a table and it didnโt feel as intimate as other omakase restaurants where you get to converse with the chef. The server told us that counter seating was booked two months out so plan ahead if thatโs the option you want to go for. Food was good overall, they serve more non-sushi dishes than other omakase restaurants which reminded me of kaiseki style cuisine in Japan where they prepare dishes based on seasonality. The course where they bring you a plate of 9 different sides was plated really well and most of them were good and the ocean trout was my favorite. The zuke chutoro piece that came out first for the sushi portion was my favorite, all the others were good but I had better quality and flavor at other restaurants like Omakase or Hinata. Overall I would give this restaurant a 4.2/5 and I did appreciate that they incorporated more Japanese dishes throughout the course if the meal.
Be the first to ReplyOverrated, condescending, and poor quality.
Overrated. Condescending. Food quality poor. Never again. After my reservation, they sent me a detailed questionnaire on diet and preferences. Yet they ignored everything I wrote, including allergies. Then when serving me mushrooms and gluten (which I can't eat), I politely demured, yet they told me it was a communication issue, and that it was my fault. Go to Ozumo or Pabu, not here. The food is better and the people are kind.
Be the first to ReplyThis is our third visit to this establishment
It is one of our favorite places for omakase. Our first visit was 2016, when they still had a Michelin star, the subsequent visits were after.
They excel in their seafood oriented sushi, sashimi and some seasonal dishes. However they are missing marks on both of the wagyu offerings.
The fried croquet with wagyu beef was really just a ball of potato with wagyu trimmings / flavoring.
Another miss was the snowcrab roll in the Hassun course. The crab itself was already sweet and succulent, but paired with a even sweeter pickles which just overwhelmed your palates.
The main wagyu course, 2 thin slices of steamed wagyu with sprinkles of dried kombu and pink peppercorns. Those were placed on top of a vegetable block made with mizuno, yuba, and cabbage (as soon as the knife cut, it turned into a crumbled glob) then, said block was laying on top of a bed of grated daikon and surrounded by a lobster reduction. The dish was busy, messy and very difficult to make into a bite.
The steamed beef has great flavor but the texture was stringy. It was our least favorite preparation of wagyu in our recent memory.
Another thing I found weird? No tamago offering unless guests pay extra. Also no dessert offering in the kaiseki menu. You have to order separate.
Highlight? Bafun sea urchin from hokkaido, shima aji, the incredibly crunchy- skinned anago, and the chopped tuna handroll towards the end.
Service? Hit or miss. We definitely had better service when we were seated at the sushi bar the first 2 times. They are still warm and welcoming.
The food is coming from another galaxyโฆ
The food is great, the tastes are amazing, the presentation is great.
We took the 11 plates menu (if I recall properly) that had a price of 175$ each (drinks not included).
I attach the pictures so everyone can see, the sushi are extremely good, the fish is at the perfect temperature.
There are some fishes we didn't even know that was so tasty.
> These are all the positive feedback I have about Kusaka.
However and besides the 11 plates, the portions were so small that we weren't fully full.
The service quality is a bit weird: you arrive and you just waitโฆ no one talks to you although the main waitress is there, looking at you. So weird. But that's a detail.
Why my rating isn't Excellent? Because I think it's a bit overpriced, I was excepting more quantity.
We wanted to order some extra nigiri at the end but it was about 12$ / piece.
Good point though, they offer us the cake I ordered for my birthday ;-)
Thank you.
OMG when can we return for more?
We love sushi and all Japanese food, and this was a real treat! The omakase menu was absolutely fabulous. Each delicate dish was a joy to behold and to savor. Be sure to get the uni and the smoky toro. The sake pairing was perfect too. We brought friends and were so pleased to offer this dinner to them. Can't wait too return. Put this on your must-do list for sushi in San Francisco. Wow....
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely worth the money for a wonderful experience.
I decided to go based on reviews, but later found out it is my Japanese friendโs favorite restaurant in the city when he visits from Japan. I can see why. I didnโt count the seats, but I would estimate 20 total and there were, I think, about 6-7 chefs, so each was working with about 3 people. Impressive and friendly and it made you feel special. The drink person was behind us, so we had to get used to someone suddenly talking from behind or appearing with drinks and some dishes. Now about the food. It was very special, delicious, interesting and a bit different than other places I have visit that are similar. They seemed to have a lot of smoked foods, which was interesting even if not my favorite type of food. There were three types of uni, including one reportedly packed on the boat in saltwater and shipped unfrozen to the restaurant. I also had a flat fish flavored with itโs own liver. The sea trout and sake lees soup was another favorite. All elevated out of the broth (fish broth with the sake lees) on a piece of daikon, there were delicious parts of the same fish โ sashimi, smoked eggs and crispy skin. It was a wonderful sensation of tastes and textures. There were many things I wanted to try from the a la carte menu, which is only possible after purchasing the omakase, so I chose the smaller one to allow many additions. That worked best for me. They have a nice list of beverages and some one who is like a sommelier. I cannot wait to return!

We were a party of three and did the sushi with wine pairing option. The food was incredibly fresh and wonderfully presented. Know that there isn't a great deal of ambiance. The restaurant is very tiny with only a handful of tables and a small sushi bar but the food is the star and well worth the price.
Be the first to Reply10 STARS!!! if it could.
Kusakabe was an unforgettable experience! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, if youre a sushi lover.
It is Omakase only! 2 options of omakase and we went chose the 11 course(large) omakase and i also went with the sake sake pairing!
As the server brings out each course, he fully explained what sushi it was. from left to right, what type of fish, how it was prepared and how it is recommended to eat. The sake pairing experience was just as amazing! Each new sake he brought out had its own glass, he was soooo knowledgeable with all the sakes(as well as the sushi) he named each sake, informed me on the ingredients that were used, what it would taste like, before he poured. Super kind, very professional, such excellent service and lets not forget the food! The sushi was seriously flavorful amazing, each very different, with their own sauces and different toppings. Best sushi experience ive had in the mainland ever.
Best Sushi I've Had EVER!
Ok, so I'm not a foodie, especially when it comes to high end meals, but I do love sushi. I came here with my dad and brother to celebrate an event. I recommend sitting up at the sushi bar where you'll have your own personal sushi chef. So instead of describing the amazing fish, I'm just attaching pics of the meal. It was definitely the freshest and amazing blend of flavors I've ever had at a Japanese restaurant.
Only warning I have is of cost. All three of us had the full omakasei along with 2 drinks and a dessert and it was about $700 after tip. Definitely by far the most expensive meal I've ever had!
What an experience!!!
We had a business meal/dinner few days ago, we had the Grand Omakase menu with a tasting selection of Sake...
What an incredible experience, by far the best Japanese/raw fish/sushi/sashimi experience I have ever had.
Basically, the chef serves you multiple small dishes of the venue/chef selection; all watering dishes in the mouth, fresh, very interesting combination and cooked/prepared to the perfection...
The food and experience is great. This is not a cheap restaurant at all, the bill was in the high 3 figures number, but it was worth every hundred we spent... Very very recommended!!! Yummy!!
