I don’t write reviews unless something is really special. This was a return visit for us as we came in 2016, recommended by Rick Steves. The family that owns this restaurant is working alongside their staff and the attention to detail shows. Delicious food, friendly service and a great atmosphere. It doesn’t get any more Italian than this! Be sure and visit the ancient cellar below. Thank you for a perfect evening!
Disappointing experience for us....
If you are looking for a leisurely dinner, this is not the place to go. They are upfront about the "two seatings" rule (7:15 and 8:45) and we knew that was the case. However, they had informed us that they would not seat a group of 8 together but we had forgotten that piece of information. When we saw two tables of four we inquired at the front desk. The hostess quickly took a pretty aggressive stance re-informing us that they did not seat groups of 8 together which set a tense tone for the rest of the 90 minutes we were there. To have someone greeting guests take such a rude and unhelpful stance is not a great idea for a restaurant. Additionally, one of our guest's main course was delivered at least 10 minutes after the rest of the table. It felt rushed and the food was not particularly memorable. Our group is a very easy going, flexible crawd but we were all disappointed in the evening. The experience of leisurely Italian cuisine is not what you will get here.

This is a pretty good *tourist* restaurant.
Interior is cool.... brick ceiling, wine cellar vibe. Decent service. Salad was Amazing... one of the best ever. Osso bucco was weak... very under cooked and tough.

The ambiance is great, cool spot and beautiful interior, but food was ok. The food came out super fast which was my first red flag. Second one was, everyone there were tourists. We ordered slow cooked veal (cannot fully remember the name), but it was tough and was def not "slow cooked"- nothing fell off the bone or connective tissue. The polenta had no flavor as well. Lastly, we ordered the Canelloni- flavor was decent, but pasta overcooked and just no texture. Service was great though. Sorry, for a lower rating, but just felt they could do better based on the ratings.

I just had lunch at the restaurant, the reason for 2 stars is the front reception is an old lady with severely bad attitude, so sad that the way she treats customers so bitterly, when you sit to eat you loose appetite, they should replace her with some kind professional person. Having a restaurant is about fun and excitement not being rude and unprofessional.

Incredible! Walked in unannounced at opening time, 7:00pm, on a Friday night. We got lucky and received a table for the two of us. Obviously, a favorite for the locals! Everything we read about them ahead of time proved to be true or better! Service- incredible. Food- unbelievably delicious!!!! Ambience was ideal for an intimate, first night experience in Sienna! Do not miss this if you are anywhere near Sienna!
I have never been to a Michelin star restaurant before and
I have never been to a Michelin star restaurant before and now i understand why it is such a big deal. The food was at a level beyond what my wife and I are typically used to when we travel. The meat in the bolognese was not like the ground beef we get back home in the US. It was actually minced beef that has a distinct flavor. You can taste the tomatoes in the sauce. The pappardelle was al dente and had an even distribution of the bolognese sauce. Best pasta dish I have ever had. The dessert was the highlight of the meal. It was a gianduia within a shell of dark chocolate. I would have been happy with just the shell but the hazelnut gianduia was a balanced sweet. I am ruined in terms of Italian food back in the US. It was quite literally a life changing experience for me and my wife. The ambience was also unique. We both used the term "grotto" to describe the interior. It was a fantastic way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary.
This restaurant was a beautiful surprise.
We didn't know about it until getting to Siena. While sitting on a bench I read about it in Rick Steve's and my husband also found it on yelp at the same time. We travel and eat out alot and this will be a memorable meal and experience. It is nestled into a cool arched small street corner, and the inside looks like a wine cellar. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff was terrific and very friendly.

Made the reservation a month in advance as this place is popular! Beautiful interior and the food is excellent and reasonably priced for what you get. Got the famous Florentine Steak for two and as advertised it came rare but "no blood" as the waiter explained because it's dry aged. Tender and delicious. The Truffle Pasta came with LOADS of fresh black truffles shaved right at the table. Would have been at least twice the price in the USA. Oh, the Tiramisu was the best we had in all of Italy. Would come back again in a heartbeat.

VERY impressed! There's a good reason why this has been a Michelin star restaurant since the early 2000s! The service and the charismatic waiters charm you into wanting to come again! Francesco was a sweetheart, and walked me through the wine room, and the history of the restaurant. Francesco, Pierpaolo, and Samuel were extremely caring, and he recommended a perfect wine for me based on my own preferences. The owner was extremely sweet and I ended up giving her a couple hugs. And this was only my first visit! I came two days in a row because I love the food that much! It is extremely well priced and the food is off the charts wonderful! I was having a hard time getting a wine tour and the gentleman who worked there wrote down a bunch of different wineries and places I should check out if I can't get a tour. They really genuinely care about their customers. EAT HERE! you cannot come to Siena without dining at this establishment! Lorella has a heart of gold and really cares for her customers! She's such a genuine soul! This review was supposed to be sent in January but I noticed it never fully posted!

Sitting outside, people watching, great bread, classic, perfectly prepared pasta, a bottle of house wine, and all a two minute walk from St. Peter's basilica... what more could you ask for?
The service and the food was amazing.
There aren't too many seafood restaurants in Siena but this specializes in fresh seafood. I really enjoyed it.

This spot is great for lunch, the service was very good as the wine list. We had the carbonara and the pappardelle al ragu and both were delicious. I would definetely really commend and a fair price

The food is amazing and the ambience is something you will never forget! The restaurant is a former dwelling, carved out of a cliff over a thousand years ago. We loved the food and the wine selection is superb. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation here!!!!

Beautiful location with an abundance of character. Read a trip advisor review and it didn’t disappoint. Highly recommend as the food and service were brilliant. We got lucky and turned up without reservation but suggest you book to guarantee a table.
Our best meal in Italy!
Our best meal in Italy! The food, atmosphere, and staff are all 5 out of 5. Our favorite was the truffle Gnocchi and the Pici with wild boar sauce, and don't forget the tiramisu. Amazing Brunello wine....
Best, and I mean BEST, dinner in Siena.
We went to many outstanding restaurants during our tour of Florence and Siena. Make no doubt about it, La Taverna di San Giuseppe's was by far the best experience we had while in Italy. Reservations a must and in advance or you will not be able to get in. Two seatings at 7:00 and 9:00pm. From the minute we walked in, this place let us know we were in a top-class setting. Our dinner was perfect. Pasta was exquisite and Osso buco was even better. Wine selection is out of this world and leave room for dessert. Service was the best I have ever had. This is a must stop in Siena.

Simply amazing! We were delighted to get a table at this restaurant.. it did not disappoint. The foods was sensational- you have to try the truffles! Best gnocchi we have ever had- melted in your mouth. The ambiance was relaxed but with charming ceilings and well dressed waiters. The Fiorentina steak was to die for! Amazing wine selection as well. You have to include this in your next trip to the Tuscany area. You won't be disappointed!
Honestly, I thought this restaurant was soooo overrated.
First, even if you make a reservation, the wait to get in is awkward and confusing. We stood inside the restaurant for five minutes before anyone acknowledged us. We were seated in front of the cellar which was nice, but I'm surprised no one has remarked on the literal black mold growing on the glass in the cellar??I am pretty sure that is not healthy. The food was mixed. Some dishes were good and some were meh. We ordered: - Cheese soufflé (5/5) this was great. - Grilled vegetables (5/5) not sure what seasoning was used but it was deeeelicious. - Carbonara (3/5) this was so filling but not really in a good way. It seemed imbalanced. Perhaps too much egg and too little pasta. - Cannelloni (4/5) the truffle was good but it was so heavy.
What a find on our first day in Tuscany.
We saw the Michelin star signs for decades and couldn't pass it up. We had an appetizer plate with a cheese soufflé, some Type of savory pastry topped with truffles and an eggplant dish. For our entrees we ordered lasagna, gnocchi and beef with a red wine reduction sauce. Amazing on every level!
Great Tuscan Food at great prices
This wonderful restaurant in Siena is a step back in history with incredibly old surroundings and a cellar that dates to BC days. This is one of my favorite lasagnas anywhere. The service is good, the food good and one can get in and out in a hurry to not miss any of the beauty of Siena.

Six years after the last visit, two Canadians had the very good fortune of obtaining a table at this fine restaurant. The food: a sparkling menu, a broad variety of dishes, and each item cooked to perfection. The people: wonderful. Excellent wines and a beautiful setting also. (Reservations definitely recommended.)

A lovely break from touring. The food was fresh and creative and the staff were friendly. I ordered the cheese soufflé which was as light as clouds. Superb. The chicken liver pate was substantial, well seasoned, and more like a mousse. A perfect lunch.

Out of this world lunch and best meal we had in Italy! The service was prompt, attentive and professional. The restaurant itself is charming with 2 wine cellars and the oldest street in Siena, encased but visible through a window inside the restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing. We started with chicken livers braised in Vin Santo. The combination of sweet and savory was delightful. My husband had the wild boar ragu and I had a When Harry Met Sally moment with my ricotta gnocchi with truffles (even fresh truffle grated on top at the table). We are definitely planning to go back next time we are in Italy. Do need reservations but not to be missed!!

One of the best meals we have ever had anywhere. The quail eggs on sausage with truffles were delicious with an outstanding blend of flavors. The pecorino cheese soufflé with pears was unique and wonderful. The risotto, wild boar, and beef stew were also all wonderful. Service (5) -- outstanding in all respects from start to finish. Atmosphere (5) -- unique especially for a Michelin starred restaurant and absolutely wonderful. We had a wonderful meal and experience. This review was from our November 3, 2023 lunch following our guided tour of beautiful Siena. We asked the waitress if she would separate the bill among four couples but she declined our request. Oh well. We started with two appetizers that we shared and they were both quite tasty. The roasted eggplant was hearty with a tomato and Parmesan cheese ensemble. The mixed green salad (insulata) had a wonderful mix of fresh vegetables with a very nice light dressing. My cocoa pasta in a white wild boar ragu was exquisite and unique. My wife enjoyed the cannelloni pasta filled with cheese and white truffle that she enjoyed. The Italian bread was possibly the best that I tasted in Italy. The service was both efficient without being overbearing. Bravo.

This restaurant is the best restaurant we have ever been to and we have been to many restaurants around the United States and Europe. I will start by the service because everyone was very welcoming and Paolo, our waiter, was extremely knowledgeable about the food and the history of the building, and he had the nicest personality. The ambiance was perfect for couples or for groups of friends and family. Everything we ate was the best we've ever eaten: prosciutto, lasagna, filet, tiramisu and pears in wine!

Though the meal had a set and time, there was no feeling of haste to any aspect. The food was phenomenal from the complimentary zuppa to the tiramisu.

Traveling all of Italy and this was the best meal by far! Even if you’re not super hungry be sure to order each course so you can enjoy everything they offer. The service was impeccable! The location is very cool because you can see the old aqueduct/cave. We would eat dinner here every night if we could!
Atmospheric with great pasta and steaks
Wonderful meal with the family. Very popular with Americans and very busy. Lovely atmosphere of ancient brick cellar. Crostone with pear, lardo and Gorgonzola was simply divine. Husband and kids loved the steak. Extensive wine selection from all over Italy, multiple price points. Very good service. Pear poached in wine was a lovely dessert.

Our fantastic receptionist at Hotel Athena was able to secure a table for 3 in short notice for the first service at La Taverna di San Giuseppe. The service was exceptional and welcoming from the start and the food was worthy of their Michelin stars. If you are in Siena and do not eat here, you should be thrown over the wall!
Excellent food and service
We’ve visited this place just after opening for lunch. We’re lucky to get a table without a reservation. We’ve ordered some starters and pasta. Everything was delicious and service was excellent. I would definitely come back.
Excellent bistecca fiorentina, we missed Antinori wines
We were invited by our business partner. Food was very good, especially bistecca fiorentina. Warm and cosy place. Only thing we missed is Antinori wine. I hope they will have it next time, when we come back.
Best Restaurant in our Italy Trip
One of the best meals we had in a 2 1/2 trip through Tuscany and easily the best and warmest service we have received at a restaurant. So many great small touches but one that really stood out was giving us glasses of prosecco while our wine decanted so that we could fully enjoy it. Highly recommend the chocolate pasta with wild boar. The dish really blew our minds and was not all what we were expecting. We loved dinner here so much that we came back for lunch again a day later.
Siena Delight!
We read reviews from websites that said this restaurant was a “can’t miss” in Siena, and reservations were strongly recommended, and only by phone. Due to time difference and my work schedule, I tried to book dinner for 2 by email about a month in advance. Fortunately, Lorella was able to make that booking via email a reality and we were looking forward to the meal ever since. Let’s just say it DID NOT disappoint!! Upon entering the restaurant and giving our name, Lorella greeted us warmly and enthusiastically, knowing exactly who we were due to our emails back and forth. The entire staff were extremely pleasant and friendly, and my lack of Italian was not an issue as our servers spoke English. We were seated in a cozy back corner and quickly provided with complimentary bowls of hot potato soup, the perfect thing to warm us up after the chilly night’s walk from our hotel. We had an eggplant appetizer with ham, cheese, and mushrooms that was absolutely delicious! I’m not a big fan of eggplant, but I would eat this dish anytime. Kudos to my wife for selecting it as our starter. She also selected our next course, lasagna with pork and beef in a béchamel sauce that was the best piece of lasagna I’ve ever had. The pasta was so light and fluffy, it allowed the flavors of the rest of the ingredients to stand out. For our mains, my wife had the grilled chicken and I had the beef filet with mushrooms. Again, two absolute winners on the menu. We each had a glass of wine with our meal, and felt fully satisfied by the end. Then we were offered dessert … Two words. Crème brûlée. Delightfully tasty, we made short work with two spoons to the end of this wonderful meal. We agreed it was the best dinner we’ve had since arriving in Italy 4 days ago, and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the restaurant to anyone traveling to or near Siena.
Magnificent - the building, the staff, and the food.
Even the smell radiating onto the street is exquisite - I loved this place before I walked through the door. The staff know and clearly love what they do, with a passion for food and drink that manages to be both stylish and approachable. The triangoli appetiser and the cannelloni first dish were our high points (the cannelloni is outrageously, almost offensively good), but the service was also immaculate - kind, funny, efficient and interesting in equal parts. Thank you for making my birthday so memorable!

I truly recommend this as a must visit if you are in Siena. Beautiful osteria- traditionally Italian and tuscan food. All freshly prepared and very delicious with wine to match 😋 The staff speak very good English, and respectively attentive. The tiramisu was sensational!
This restaurant was spectacular.
We had pasta and gnocchi to start. Both were served with shaved black truffles. Then my husband had the Osso Bucco which was so tender it just fell away from the bone. I had the wild boar--spectacular!!! I had never had wild boar before and this was a revelation. I recommend it highly; it is cooked for 8 hours, 4 hours in white wine and 4 hours in milk. We had roasted vegetables and spinach to accompany the meal. A dessert sampler to finish. Wines were: Prosecco to accompany the chef's potato soup, then Montepulciano (osso bucco) and Chianti Classico (wild boar) with our main dishes. And two dessert wines to finish. Mine was apricot- y and from a small island of 700 inhabitants located between Italy and Africa. Unfortunately I left my phone in the hotel so have no photos to share. The ambiance, the wait staff, the food.,. Five stars. We feel very lucky. Note: very steep incline to reach restaurant from Campo de Palio. Take a cab if possible. After dinner the walk home was mostly downhill.

Very excited to have stumbled upon another Michelin star restaurant while traveling through Italy. As soon as I saw it, I walked in to get reservations. We were able to secure seats that evening due the first seating. The interior is lovely and they have a vibe and cheese cellar that looks super cool and has that humus, cool and musty smell to it. Primo!! I have to say that I was a bit disappointed overall. The Portions were small. Now, I realize that this is a Michelin star restaurant and don't expect big American portions, however, that being said they were a bit small not being a tasting menu. We asked to split a garden side salad but He gave us the special salad which was the wrong salad and twice the price. The salad contains slides grapes which were different fur a salad but tasted good. The problem was that there were grape seeds all over the salad and in the grapes and ruined each bite.The plating left a lot to be desired. Like they say, you eat with your eyes first. There wasn't much for the eyes to chew on here. Very boring and plain. I expect much more from an award winning restaurant of this caliber and with these prices. Overall, the meal could have been much better in multiple ways. Disappointing to say the least.

* Peter can now talk to EternalAnt36 for any questions Peter may have as EternalAnt36 user fills the bid.
3.) Finding the Reservation
* EternalAnt36 now uses their connections at La Taverna di San Giuseppe Siena to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If EternalAnt36 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.
4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, EternalAnt36 receives the $200 reward which is credited to EternalAnt36's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
