Langbaan Portland Reviews
Beautiful, artful, amazing dishes.
In the TV series quantum Leap, there's a quote that says dining is the only art that uses all five senses. Things are beautiful. The dishes came with stories depending on who served it. I wanted the two add-ons because I liked those foods the best. I'm really annoyed that the two add-ons were the most delicious part of me on the period. I was not impressed with the other dishes, but they were beautiful and overall good. There was one dish on the scallop plate that was so delicious. I wanted to ask them if I could have a second serving. But it's too embarrassing to ask. My husband liked the food more than I did.
Dined here on a recent trip to Portland.
I was particularly interested in it given its 2024 James Beard award for outstanding restaurant. I have to say, it was good - but not outstanding. Sat at the bar on a Saturday night with my wife and the bartenders were our servers. Despite their juggling acts - they were very attentive and friendly. The vibe here is good - it's a relatively small place with an open-kitchen concept. It was nearing 100 degrees outside and we dressed in short sleeves and shorts and felt comfortable. The good of the place besides the service and the vibe was hands-down the flavors. A few of the dishes were punch-in-the-face flavorful! My top pick was the Tom Soap Pub (Dungeness crab) and the Kanom Krok (scallop with coconut cream). I was wary about the Tub On Jim Jaew, having never tried sweetbreads before but honestly, I never would have known I was eating an offal. I don't rate this an outstanding place for three reasons in particular. One, a few of the dishes were way too salty. I'm guessing it was due to fish sauce but for someone like me who is happy to lick a salt block - I thought it was way overdone. Two, many of the courses were served "family style" but friends, when you are paying $135 each, I expect a shared dish to be more than three tiny pieces of squab. If I were a solo diner, would they have only served me 1 1/5 tiny pieces? I don't know how the server kept a straight face and said "family style" with such a chintzy plate. Lastly, the bathroom situation...it's out the door near the kitchen and you walk into a long hallway with no bathroom for the restaurant clearly marked. There are two bathrooms that apparently belong to some other business but not accessible to the restaurant patrons. I had to go back inside and ask and was escorted to an unmarked door that required a code. Inside - dark, bare bones, and nothing that suggested "outstanding." I've seen better bathrooms at 7-11. All in all, I was glad to try Langbaan but it is not on my list of places that I'd make a point to go back to.
Best Thai food outside of Bangkok.
Do not miss if you love food, the best is they have Thai liquor and the pairing is unique and phenomenal
Langbaan describes dining here as an experience & I have to
Langbaan describes dining here as an experience & I have to agree. From the ambience, the service, the menu, & the attention to every little detail over the course of a 2 hour tasting menu experience is the best way to describe having a meal here. I booked a bar spot for an 8:15 seating on a Friday night weeks in advance as a treat yo self gift to myself after climbing Mt Saint Helens & biking a significant portion of the gorge over the previous two days. This was my last meal in Portland & I wanted it to be something special & it was. I arrived about 30 mins early to have a drink at Phuket Cafe & was seated on the outside window bar & told I would be moved inside for my service at Langbaan once the setup for dinner service was completed. I had a Thai tea & watched the staff work like seasoned tacticians to prepare the inside space for the service. I was moved inside & took my seat at the bar & introduced to Molly who was working the bar along with another coworker. She said she would be with those of us at the bar to walk us through the menu throughout the night as we enjoyed ourselves. She was a delight & very attentive the entire service. Obviously the food is the main reason to come here & it didn't disappoint. I opted to include both of the additional courses for the night A Pair of Oysters $8 & a5 wagyu ribeye $45. Having had wagyu in Japan years ago the portion served here for $45 was well worth it if you've never had it. The oysters were exceptional and dressed with Yuzu, thai chili, lime leaf, shallots, sesame. For $8 that's a no brainer. Of the many delectable courses served (there was so much food!) my favorite two were the Hokkaido Scallop & the squab of the two courses included in the main assortment. If I'm including the add ons then it's much harder to rank. I did have one cocktail during the meal, the rocket pop (Irish Whiskey, Coconut Caramel, Peychaud's Cordial, Pineapple, Mint ) It was refreshing & stout. I've been to Thailand but never the Isan region featured in the menu curation. Everything was of the highest quality & beautifully presented. There were items I would never order or even know of served & that's the great thing about an experience like this. You put yourself at the mercy of the creative & passionate hands of the chef & just enjoy. Highly highly recommend!

i liked the scenery, the dim lights, the serves were very kind! the food however was a bit off, i can't understand plating is nice but i just think the food needs a couple tweaks.
Dining at Langbaan is a journey over a destination.
The food experience is truly a ride for the senses that is delivered with careful precision, along with gentle and generous knowledge of course and pairings from an expert wait staff. It feels friendly and inviting and never ever disappoints!
What a wonderful experience.
The tasting menu was well thought out and balanced, full of creativity and flavors. My favorites were the main course: king salmon (gang prer), crawfish relish (taew goong), eggplant (yum makhua phao) with coconut rice (khao mhoa). Also the scallop with cream (kanom krok) and the squab with peaches and dill (lon pla rah nok pi-rab). There are many more ingredients and techniques that go into these dishes than are listed in the menu. Staff were friendly and attentive and then atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. This was a birthday dinner splurge which was a big treat for us. Could not recommend more.

This was a special occasion dinner for us, and for me in particular I am new to tasting menus. Langbaan changes its menu and region of Thailand multiple times a year, totaling at 6 different menus in a year. The atmosphere is intimate, quiet, and beautifully designed. I particularly liked the green lighting for the bar. The staff at Langbaan are incredibly attentive, and knowledgeable about their rotating menus. If they can't answer your question, they will find who in their restaurant can. On this menu, my favorite bites were the scallops in rice cups and the Thai tea dessert. The flavors were bold, and pushed me out of my comfort zone at times which I appreciated. While not every bite was a hit for the table, the overall experience was well-thought out. The attention to detail with the plating and combination of flavors was carefully planned out. They will also accommodate dietary needs here. For alcohol, I got the windfall island which had a nice jasmine flavor. You can also get wine pairings for the menu, with five pours total. Thank you Langbaan for a lovely evening.
This is such a special meal.
The flavors were intense, deep, interesting, and balanced. The presentation of the dishes was whimsical. But what really made this experience unique and something I would definitely do again is the way the staff described each dish, and the truly authentic nature of the recipes and ingredients used. It wasn't about showy ingredients and experimental gastronomy, it was about bringing us into the Issan region and sharing traditional food, and the communal experience that goes along with a shared meal.

It was a bit disappointing that for the amount of money you pay, the space is really tight since it's shared with Phuket Cafe, so it's not exactly a place to have intimate conversations. Ambiance was great but there's just not much elbow room. As for the food, there were 12 dishes, starting with small bites first then growing larger towards the end. Everything was really good and well balanced; acidic, rich, tangy, sweet, savory and herbaceous. You can see the Thai flavors really come out. For the money, I was hoping they'd be more creative with techniques but flavors were the standouts. Service was really good, as expected with the amount you're paying. For $150 per head, it's a bit spendy so save this for a special occasion.
Welp, I was expecting more for "the best restaurant in
Welp, I was expecting more for "the best restaurant in America." LOVED the starters (shrimp, scallop, mussel) Went down hill after that. And the food came out SOOO painfully slowly (45 min between courses). The entree was 2 shrimp and 2 thin, small slices of Thai pork. We ended with a beautiful dessert, but did not feel that meal was worth $125.
An unbelievable experience with superb food and excellent
An unbelievable experience with superb food and excellent service. And... we enjoyed many dishes that celebrated their 10 years as well as their well deserved James Beard award for Best Restaurant of the Year.

Would get a 5 stars but automatically adding 20% gratuity then asking for more says they don't trust the diners. I never add extra money when there is an autograt. Otherwise 30% is my standard... I think autograts are RUDE.
Amazing combination of flavors.
A visual and gastronomic delight. Prix fixe menu of 12 items with multiple appetizers to desserts.

The staff was super friendly and accommodating! They were well versed with painting the story of their menu and wine pairings. The ambiance was dimly lit with a nice intimate feel. The food was absolutely incredible! The amount of flavor put together was simply amazing! We came during their 10 year anniversary and their tasting menu was their greatest hits over that span. Every single dish that came was beautifully presented and the taste to match. I would 1000% come back to this place and couldn't recommend it enough to others!

I went to Phuket Cafe and which is the outside area in front of Langbaan with my teenage daughter on Saturday, April 13 around 6 PM. I know they would be busy but thought we'd try anyway. We saw some open tables outside so I thought we'd go inside to ask if there was any opening. I smiled at the hostess to say hi but before I could even opened my mouth, I am dead serious here, she rolled her eyes at us. I tried to ignore that and politely asked if there happened to be any open table. She said that the first opening would be at 9PM. I just wanted to make sure that she knew I talked about the outside tables for Phuket Cafe, and she lost patience with us even more (she didn't have any to begin with). She was very short with us. We were quite shocked and weren't sure what was going on and decided to leave. The first thing my poor daughter asked me once we stepped outside was, "Mom, why did that lady talk to us like that?" I told her I had no idea. I was polite the whole time. We ended up walking across the street to eat at Pixiu Mala Hongtang. Sure it wasn't as fancy but the food was good and everyone in there was nice to us which saved us from the evening that Langbaan's hostess almost ruined.
Langbaan 3.
5 stars A special tasting menu at select times inside Phucket Cafe. Inspired by Issan Let me start by saying everything on the menu was good but the main dishes didn't really agree with my palate so for the price I'll take Phucket Cafe. The appetizers and desserts I would fight a pack of wild Yorkies for on a daily basis! Service, atmosphere and portions were perfect. Kanom Krock (scallops in lemongrass coconut cream) is something I've never experienced but wish I could every day of my life. Simply amazing Rice Khao Lam (sticky rice pudding with strawberries) was the perfect blend of savory and sweet and added a refreshing end to a perfectly portioned meal. Also they were so accommodating for food allergies (you HAVE to let them know a few days in advance) Overall (and a half) Service Atmosphere @langbaanpdx #travelportland #pdxeater #pdx #portland #restauranteurexplorators #eats #pdxfoodbloggers #portlandoregon
Langban was pretty good and the service was very friendly
Langban was pretty good and the service was very friendly and down to earth. Me and my partner did the tasting menu and I thought that Kanom Krok with the scallops was easily the best dish of the night. It was so flavorful and creamy that I regretted that I finished the bite so fast. I think that the appetizers were the star of the menu and that all the other dishes were quite forgettable. Not bad, but not phenomenal as I didn't really feel that there were any particular stand outs. For the final main dish, there was a curry for "family style" but while it was nicely presented, I just didn't think there was anything special or out of the ordinary for something that commanded the price of a tasting menu. It was also a bit too spicy for my own palette. Regardless, it was a fun experience and might be worth it if you are a fan of Thai food in a slightly elevated context.

Well I've waited a long time to finally eat at Langbaan and it definitely lived up to the hype. The food was fabulous, they change the menu every couple months but you can read about it online at their website. It was too complicated for me to remember the names of what I ate, but each dish was better than the last. First time I've eaten octopus and it was wonderful. There wasn't a single mediocre plate. The servers were also great, took their time to explain every dish fully and they're wine selection for me was great. I'm also very impressed that during our terrible ice storm last week they cooked meals for the homeless rather than throw away the food they couldn't use since no one could get in to eat.
It's no wonder they just got a James Beard nomination.
The space, service, and food were top notch! From the first course to the last, every bite was a party in your mouth. If I had to choose a favorite it would, without question, be the lamb belly curry! O. M. G. Melt in your mouth. They also run two restaurants out of the same space on weekends and they were so on top of everything, you would never know. Cannot wait to visit their sister restaurant Phuket Kitchen.
Langbaan: Blown away by this experience and the omakase,
Langbaan: Blown away by this experience and the omakase, attention and care put together by this team. Entering Langbaan is like journeying to a traditional Thai home. The dimly lit greens and wood beams provide an intimate setting for your meal experience. The staff is attentive and wonderful; they take care to explain the menu and enjoy the experience. Each course is inspired by Thai cuisine and local ingredients. You will have a hard time deciding which standout plate tops them all. Thai food to me is very flavorful: coconut milk, nuts, spices. I particularly enjoyed the "Jook" - an amazing multi-textured, multi-flavored dish using octopus and pomegranate. It was an experience I'd never tasted before. It's not strictly Thai, but honors the innovation and palette of Thai culture. It's a sensory feast. Langbaan is a can't miss, if you're in Portland and want to taste something unique, but familiar- and yet, distinctly Portland. Food: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Experience: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Good for: Fancy dinner. Celebrating. Authenticity: 4/5 Recommends: Giving yourself over to the experience. Notes:
I was not a fan, at all.
I will add the caveat of, when it comes to Thai food, I'm no expert, but my favorite dishes are larb, and pad kee mao. I am really not fond of foods that are both sweet and savory, peanut used in a savory context, sesame, fish sauce, and lemongrass. So, don't let this dissuade you if you like these things. Besides the fact that the menu nearly entirely featured flavor profiles that I dislike, almost everything was super gelatinous and goopy, with no textural variation. The Kanom Krak, which they claimed was a beloved dish amongst their customers, was a mucosal catastrophe. Perhaps I am a philistine for my inability to enjoy homogeneous and slimy foods, but I found myself leaving both nauseous and ravenous. The only thing I actually liked was the yum mama neua yang (the wagyu flank steak salad) One of my dining companions, who enjoys Thai food as a whole, also noted that the textures were too gloopy. The service was weird and kind of punk, for lack of a better term. The better the food is at a restaurant, the less I factor in service. If they are serving me the best food I've ever had in my life, I don't care if they spit on me or kick me or something. But, the less impressive the food is, the more noticeable bad service becomes. And the food was not good enough for the service to be that weird and punk.
Food was more on the spicy side even if they tell you
Food was more on the spicy side even if they tell you upfront it's NOT spicy at all. For the price, I'd rather have some of the appetizers as the main meal rather than the whole 12? Course meal. Halfway thru the meal I stopped eating because it was way too spicy for me. I got so full drinking water. The service was great and quick. The little plates were plenty and they were cleared accordingly. The narrative of each meal was perfect but if it's not going to agree with one's tastebuds then only the ears got satisfied. It was incredibly dark inside too so you could barely appreciate the presentation. Sorry NOT for me.
Very original.
The flavor combinations were outstanding especially with the sole main dinner and sides. I'm taking one star away. I know it's cliche to say fancy restaurants have small portions, but it's really true here. If you have a big appetite, don't expect to leave full. The last two items were a ginger ice cream that was about one tablespoon worth and a coconut flan that was about 1.5"x1.5". Why is dessert a one biter? Give me more. Especially for $125.
Christmas shopping with Katie in PDX for the day.
We have spent time in Thailand, dear reader, so it's fair to say that we know authentic when we taste it. Langbaan promotes, "Thai-style dining experience inspired by century-old traditions." Promotes, okay, but certainly does not deliver. *Reservations are not easy to get, and it's all hype, we assure you *Parking is impossible in this part of DT Portland *Venue looks like a summer camp mess hall *Bathrooms look like a demilitarized zone *Our server didn't have any when we asked for menu suggestions *Our server kept bringing us food that other patrons/tables had ordered *The Miang Soup was served with a human fingernail in it *The Nahm Tok was served on an obviously cracked and broken plate *When we asked for our coats the staff could not find them (WTF?!) *When we left no tip, a manager followed us to our car for a 20% gratuity If you have never been to Thailand please don't use this restaurant as a measuring stick for authentic food. A Thai frozen dinner from 7-11 would top this place any day of the week. Since we didn't eat much, we're stopping off at a local taco truck before heading back to the Cessna. Portland, you're getting worse and worse.
Came here for a special occasion.
It is a fixed menu. And no modifications and 20% gratuity is added. We arrived right at 8:30pm, we got seated right away at the bar. We did have 2 different servers help and they were both great! Very knowledgeable about each item in the menu and the ingredients. The ambiance was very chill and casual. It was a bit dark and really hard to read the menu ingredients (luckily we had a small light at the bar). It wasn't highly decorated but a great mood overall. Food tasted good with a few hits and misses but we tried some things that we never tried before. Definitely come with people who have been to tasting menus before and won't complain about the price!

We went for the pre-fixed 11 small course tasting menu for $125 per person that they do twice nightly. While the food was quite excellent, although highly likely geared towards the non Asian patron, the space is not at all romantic. The three 2-top tables are very close together so that your servers bumm is right against your table when they are serving the table next to you, and all of those tables face the two bars that seat patrons for walk ins for their sister restaurant Phuket Cafe. High foot traffic. We went for a special occasion but received no acknowledgment or any thoughtful seating because of that. It felt rushed (because they were trying to get through 11 courses quickly). And the wine paring price (additional cost) was not disclosed upfront so when the bill came and it was twice the amount of the tasting menu, it was a bit of a shock. There was a added 2 oysters (delicious) for $8 or $10 and an added sliced wagu beef that was a 3 tiny slices (.075 oz) for $40. After $500, I went home still hungry and made myself a 3 egg omelet with a crab cake. I guess I felt like it wasn't worth the price. Tasted great and staff was knowledgable and efficient. But overall, Im not rich and I probably won't go there again unfortunately.
