Finally snagged a lunch reservation here on a Sunday after
Finally snagged a lunch reservation here on a Sunday after trying for so long! We had to wait a bit to get seated while another table is finishing up. I was disappointed to see on the menu that they weren't serving dumplings that day since that was the main reason I wanted to come in. I know they are switching up their service a bit and being dumpling and drinks only in the evening, but didn't think this would mean dumplings would come off the main menu. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and recommended a few of her favorite things. We ordered the beef tartare hand rolls, crab omelette, and potato bread and butter to share. They also brought us some oysters to try (presumably because I was disappointed about the dumplings), but I don't like oysters so I didn't get to try. The hand rolls were my favorite thing we tried! It was surprising filling and very flavorful. The omelette was also incredible and the texture of the egg mixed with the creamy crab was to die for. The bread and butter was also the best i've ever had. We also tried the Irish coffee which had a thick cream with salt on it and was so yummy. All in all the service was great and so was the food, but it was a little pricier than I feel was worth it. I will hopefully be back for the dumplings and drinks in the future!

It's rare when each and every aspect of a meal is 5 star excellent--it's rare but it's true for Locust. This place is truly a gem and we are lucky to be able to experience it in Nashville. Located in 12 south it's a reservations only place for lunch time (dinner is first come first served). From my minute you walk in the staff is attentive, kind and informative. We opted to try the entire menu amongst 4 people with a couple of double orders for some smaller dishes--we left full. Each and every course was wonderful--but if I would've had room for seconds I'd have ordered the beef tartare and the potatoe bread again! Get on it and make reservations as soon as you can!
Be the first to ReplyLocust is also a repeat experience for me.
We snagged a lunch reservation. Make reservations ahead. I trolled the online portal and signed up 2 min after it opened and still didn't get a "lunch" time slot. I thought that was weird but it worked out. The menu was totally different than the time I went and I was sad to see neither dumplings nor Dover sole on it. Happily, the dumplings ended up being on special so we had those at least. The last time I came, our waiter was actually the owner and we didn't know it until we were leaving. Not to say service was poor this time, just not as special. We did wait 15 min before someone came over to take our order. Our waitress suggested we get the toast with scallop butter and that was SO GOOD. Here's a run down of what we ate and my thoughts: Tuna crisp - really fine quality tuna, clearly. My husband loved it. I personally didn't because of the texture of raw fish. So I'm still giving it a 9/10 Beef Tartare - another thing where I had to put the texture aside. The rice with wasabi mayo at the bottom was bomb. Appreciated the nori for contrast. 10/10 Dumplings - yes. Give me all of them. 8/order with 3 sauces. My fav was the chili oil. The wrapper was paper thin and easy to eat. 10/10 Potato Bread with scallop butter - why do we only get one piece of bread? It was so good. Smart that was our last course because it was deliciously fatty and heavy. 10/10 Shave ice: I think the flavors of this change depending on the week. Today it was earl gray with strawberry. Super special because each bite had a surprise. They don't just pile on ice and some syrup. The entire dish is thought through: the experience of eating. I really, really liked that. There was condensed milk at the bottom, ice studded with mochi and dried strawberries, topped with earl gray cream and strawberry powder. Then, once you eat through the top layer, there was a vial of cookie butter to pour over and this hardened on the ice. Like seriously, heaven. I'm writing this and truly sad I don't live in Nashville just to eat this regularly. I appreciated how every item came out right when it was finished: meaning my potato bread was warm and piping hot and the shave ice got its finishing touches seconds before we ate it. A very thoughtful concept and menu.

Food - 9/10 - easily the best and most interesting food I've had in a while, flavors are very balanced and rather delicate, can't good most of the foods on the menu elsewhere. was quite pleased with the value for money as well. Service - 10/10 - highly attentive and more accommodating then you'd expect Ambiance - 10/10 - this is a nice spot to relax, so much so I came back the next day to try out their dinner! Wish this restaurant would move to my city (San Diego). It'd be my favorite place!
Be the first to ReplyI'm so sad that I didn't like this place! We came for lunch
I'm so sad that I didn't like this place! We came for lunch and ordered the tuna and beef tartare roll up to start. They were both too fishy for my liking. Next we got the bread which was good and the fish that was again too fishy. I will say the service was fantastic and the staff there is very engaging. I really wish I liked the food more because I was so excited to come here! I assume the dumplings are amazing but they are only on the later night menu as of now....
Be the first to ReplyThis place absolutely lived up to the hype.
It's sort of a weird experience, with a sort of haphazard service concept, but we didn't want for anything. We started with the tuna crisp, the razor clams, and the beef tartar. All three were delicious, but I could have eaten 5 of that tuna crisp. Next up was the crab omelet, the potato toast, and the hash brown soup. The potato toast had a scallop butter and was good. The hash brown soup was different and fun - a really appealing dish overall. I didn't love the crab omelet, but I was the only one. Everyone else thought it was great. We finished with the shaved ice, which was a mix of flavor and texture that I'll be thinking about for a while. We split a bottle of wine and all thoroughly enjoyed the meal. If you're a picky eater, this isn't going to be for you. But if you like to try new things, you'll find this amazing.

An incredible experience, when you're in the mood for a splurge! I've been to Locust during each of its iterations: pandemic dumplings and shaved ice (takeout only), reservations only dine-in experience, (and I'm excited to come in March when they do evenings dumplings and drinks only.) Each time the food has been unique and incredible, but mostly this is just a very fun food experience for the somewhat adventurous. I like to describe their menu as seafood-forward, Asian-inspired small plates. (I would not recommend this restaurant for vegetarians or vegans, there are very few items you would be able to eat and it's not really a place to ask for substitutions.) Unlike a lot of other small plates/dining restaurants, when I come to Locust I know I'm going to be super full by the end of my meal and I plan to skip breakfast so that I can really enjoy and try everything they have to offer. My friend told me the best advice here is to order, if at all possible, everything, and that advice has not disappointed. Some of my must-order items: razor clams (the sweet Maui onion sauce makes it unreal refreshing), the beef tartare (I've literally had dreams of how perfect the horseradish sauce and custardy-cream at the bottom of the rice container makes this dish!), the potato bread (would get multiple of this if I had room for it), the dumplings, and honestly if they have any dish with crab, it's been divine. The quality of the food is just insane and I've even enjoyed coming and doing this menu just by myself. You cannot leave Locust without getting dessert, as they always have some of the most unreal and one-of-a-kind desserts (the shaved ice is always a favorite, no matter the flavor combination!) Service here has always really blown me away: they are thoughtful and attentive to any details you left in your reservation (dietary restrictions, etc). On a recent visit, they sat me by the chef's prep area and I loved watching them work, just seeing the fun they had putting on this restaurant experience for folks. You can tell these are people who really have a high bar for what they do but also equally want guests to enjoy themselves. I cannot recommend this place enough but also will name that it's pricey and that won't be for everyone (or an all the time experience.) My bill was $250-300 each time I went, which included most, but not all of the menu items and 3 drinks (20% gratuity is included on your check, which I appreciated because I didn't want to math after all that food.) This is a perfect treat-yourself meal and just an overall really special restaurant experience.

This restaurant deserves every bit of hype and every accolade it has received. We got a reservation for 7pm on a Sunday, four people. Street parking around 12 South, you know the deal.We were seated almost immediately. A server came over and walked us through the drink options: a select few classic cocktails with a slightly original take. I had both the Irish and the Spanish gin & tonics. I prefer the Irish one, but they were both significantly more vibrant and delightful than the average gin & tonic.Time for food. Tuna crisp, dynamite. Beef tartare, absolutely delicious. It was fun to get hands-on making the tartare hand roll. Cod (off the menu, fish of the day) was seasoned beautifully, fried nicely & came with a dill mayo. Really neat & tasty. The lamb dumplings had an amazingly deep flavor. Tender, delicious, massively umami. Razor Clams, tender, flavorful, coated my mouth with a very yummy taste.Time for dessert. We got the shaved ice. Passionfruit & honeycomb (the whipped caramel kind, not honeycomb from a beehive). Sweetly cured egg yolk on top. Very delicious, but I'll be honest it was not quite as explosive as their other dishes. An off-the-menu dessert option - Canelรฉ w/ blue cheese & salted honey. This was one of those bites I'll remember forever. Truly phenomenal bit of dessert. Powerful cheese (more salty than funky, but still a bit funky) tamed & sweetened by the honey & custardy pastry. The crunch from the caramelized exterior of the pastry brought the right amount of texture to the bite. This slapped. Big time.Service was awesome. We never had an empty/dirty dish on our table for more than 60 seconds it seemed. We always had water and never felt like we needed to flag anybody down. The environment was relaxed. Quite the range of music in the restaurant, but it was never obnoxious or irritating. The chefs are also the wait staff and they are very laid back & happy to answer any questions. Is it hard to get a reservation here? A little. Is it worth the trouble? Absolutely. Carve out the time, get a res, and commit to eating here. Expect the menu to have changed slightly. Expect to be very, very pleased.
Be the first to ReplyEating at locust is a religious experience.
I've eaten great food all around the world and 2 of my top 5 meals ever have been at Locust. We're blessed to have this in Nashville.
Be the first to ReplyBrace yourself it's gonna be a long review.
This is a very difficult reservation to get now that people worldwide are finding out how good this place is. And for good reason. My strategy in getting a spot here involved sitting at my computer and setting multiple alarms on my phone as to not miss the release of reservations for the following month. May the odds be ever in your favor. Luckily, I was able to score a prime spot on a Sunday at 7 PM. I invited my date to check this place out with me, one to test her and see if she could hang with me (a devout foodie), but also impress her. (Spoiler alert: Success on both I think.) Upon parking, (Linden has a ton of free parking) I walked up to the hostess who was so sweet and got me seated as I waited for the rest of my party to arrive. This place is absolutely gorgeous. The attention to detail in the design, materials used and open concept kitchen make you feel so at ease...and on top of that, as you walk in, everyone in the kitchen will exclaim multiple "Welcome Ins!!" It genuinely makes you feel like you walked into your best friend's house for dinner. Upon seating, there are 3 menus. A small food menu, a crispy boy menu (cocktails) along with some great N/A options, and a large 2 page wine list. It's entirely impressive. I ordered a Greek white wine and loved that they pour you a small taste to make sure you like it before filling your glass. My date had the N/A Riesling and was genuinely concerned that it could have alcohol in it, not because it was bad....but it was incredibly good. Not sweet like most people think Rieslings are. We ordered the clam soldiers, Pacific Gold Oysters, Tuna Crisp, Beef Tartare, ShrimpToast, Citrus Endive Cheese Salad, Lamb Dumplings and Bread Sauce and the Milk and Egg Ice. First, the oysters were plump. They were a lot bigger and deeper than most oysters I'm used to out here. The mignonette was perfectly balanced and tart, and it really brought the brine/sweetness out in the oysters. Then came the tuna crisp. This was like butter. Imagine tuna butter smeared on a crisp cracker, with a delicious (wasabi aioli?) below it. Incredible. Really thin sheets of tuna that completely coat your mouth with a richness akin to eating wagyu. So good. The beef tartare. SWOOOOON. This is served BYO hand roll style. Scoop (perfectly cooked) rice on top of some crisp nori, add a dollop of beef, sprinkle some crispy rice and roll it up and devour. This was incredible. 2nd favorite dish of the night for sure. On to the clam soldiers. These were really good! Slightly smoky, plump clams perched on top of a piece of griddled bread soaked with clarified butter and seared crisp. On top is an aioli/sauce of some sort and then the clams. This tasted like a smoky, chewy piece of really good garlic bread. On to the shrimp toast. This crispy little pocket came out with an orange lemon, a curious crossbreed from California and an orange sauce with chili oil. This was good, but not the star of the show. It was crispy and the shrimp patty inside was good as well. The citrus endive salad came out next with the lamb dumplings which was phenomenal timing. The bitterness of the salad counteracts the RICHNESS of the lamb dumplings. I made so many faces after my first bite of those lamb dumplings y'all. I'm surprised my date didn't run out of there thinking I was possessed. They are definitely in my top 5 dishes I've had in Nashville...hell maybe even the US. GET THESE. The endive salad was citrusy, rich and bitter in all the right places and is a perfect accompaniment to the dumplings. To (almost) end the night, the shaved ice came out with a fat layer of a malty, rich mousse and a golden yellow cured slightly salty egg yolk delicately sitting on it. Inside, tart/sweet passion fruit and honeycomb lay waiting to surprise us. Seriously such a phenomenal dessert. Get this. To end the meal, our server brought us a beautiful canelรฉ cut in half, which was perfectly made...just like everything else in here. To sum things up Locust is sincerely deserving of all of the praise that is being thrown their way. These people genuinely enjoy what they do. You can taste the love and passion in the food, you can see it surrounding you in the decor and architecture and reflected in the faces of everyone eating around you. Plan accordingly, make a reservation and enjoy one of the best damn meals of your life here. 10/10 worth it. And get those lamb dumplings. You'll be transported into another dimension.
Be the first to ReplyMy experience was pretty traumatic and underwhelming dated
My experience was pretty traumatic and underwhelming dated back to Oct 2021. I will keep it short and sweet to not have horrible flashbacks again. As Asian, the staff made you feel like an odd ball sitting and dining at an asian cuisine restaurant by white people. I don't care if the owner got training from Noma in Denmark. Dumplings did not start out as a gourmet, pretentious food. I remember that day was pouring rain and flooding at the time. And I'd rather soak my favorite sneakers and walked out instead of sitting there any second longer to experience the uncomfortable stares. The dumpling wrappers were thin and see-through. Never seen something like that unless you buy corporate frozen dumplings at supermarket. Not worth spending another dime for this pretentious restaurant. I told my peers about my experience and it was eye-opening for them. If you've been to the finer things in life, the dumplings here are laughable. I haven't got a chance to try out Mama Yang and Daughter in Nashville yet but that's one of the options. Or try Din Tai Fung.

Every dish was prepared so beautifully. The steak just melted in your mouth. The care and attention we received by the servers made us feel special. Thank you one the best culinary experience we had!

Wow. What a special experience! Amazing! This restaurant was really an experience. The service was probably one of the best I've ever had- having the chef there to explain the menu was really special. It doesn't look high end on the inside (very simple and basic decor) but it truly felt like a high end experience. I don't even normally like beef tartare and that was my favorite item on the menu! Must try. Honestly everything was very tasty. Of course the price tag is higher but ingredients are high quality and service can't be beat! Would definitely come back. Recommend this spot for any intimate special occasion or nice date.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic service- were greeted when we entered and staff
Fantastic service- were greeted when we entered and staff said a group goodbye when we left. Staff is super attentive (in a good way) and professional. Just watch the workflow magic in the open kitchen... they work hard to ensure an excellent product is produced in a short amount of time. But the food will blow you away. Dishes you MUST get: crispy tuna and the shaved ice dessert. You'll be talking about them for days. Trust me. Other dishes were also good, but those two were the highlights. Expensive but worth it. If I had one negative comment about this place (and this is being picky), I'd say it's really loud in there. It's a small space and it was hard to hear my husband or the waiters speak. Would still go back without questions though.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely worth a try so you can form your own opinion.
Here is my take. A few dishes that really stood out were the beef tartare and the shaved ice dessert. The rice that was served with the beef tartare was unlike anything I have ever had in my life and we ate every bite. The star of the show was definitely the shaved ice dessert. This is a MUST TRY. I was surprised to find that there was a salty aspect to the dessert but it somehow worked. Upon further discovery we realized the yellow ball on top was in fact an egg yolk. Normally I would be like wtf but it totally worked for this dessert. I would come back just to eat that dish again. We were lucky enough to come on a night where they had an aged ribeye and lobster dish and although very expensive it was divine. The steak was cooked perfectly and so tender. If you are able to stay a highly coveted reservation then definitely give this place a try.
Be the first to ReplyA great experience overall.
I would highly recommend the shaved ice dessert, the risotto special with uni and the crispy tuna. Beef tartare and oysters were pretty good too so I'll give those an honorable mention lol.Shrimp cake and dumplings were underwhelming, the sole was good but nowhere near worth $80 in my opinion. I'm glad we tried Locust but it didn't rock my world for the price point so we probably won't be back. The two friends we went with loved everything though and said they will be back so all a matter of opinion
Be the first to ReplyContrary to what some of the lower starred reviews say on
Contrary to what some of the lower starred reviews say on here- our service was excellent. It's not the white glove pretentious service that you'd find at many of the upscale places around town- it's authentic friendly hospitality. And honestly, I prefer it that way. The place is well staffed, they were interactive with us and provided a great breakdown of the food and bev. We're not drinkers so I cannot say much about the alcohol offerings but the food was outstanding. I will be thinking about those lamb dumplings for weeks to come. The textural adventure of the dessert was phenomenal. In addition to the great staff and food, the ambiance is wonderful. They have large windows to let in so much natural light and plants that brighten the space even more. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked and parking was easy to find (which in this neighborhood deserves its own additional star) This was a thoughtful and lovely experience that will bring us back for another date night.
